The Atlantic Albums Collection fasst einige der wichtigsten und unglaublichsten Alben der Sängerin in einer wunderbar ausgestatteten Box zusammen, darunter legendäre Alben wie I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You (1967), Lady Soul (1968), Young, Gifted and Black (1972) sowie die Deluxe-Version von Live At The Filmore West (2CD, 1971) und die Raritäten-Sammlung Rare & Unreleased Recordings from the Golden Reign of the Queen Of Soul, die 2007 zum ersten Mal veröffentlicht wurde. • Biu Withers by Rob Bowman He Was the Leading Figure in the Nascent Black Singer-Songwriter Movement of the Early 1970S
PERFORMERS BiU Withers By Rob Bowman He was the leading figure in the nascent black singer-songwriter movement of the early 1970s. BILL WITHERS WAS SIMPLY NOT BORN TO PLAY THE record industry game. His oft-repeated descriptor for A&R men is “antagonistic and redundant.” Not surprisingly, most A&R men at Columbia Records, the label he recorded for beginning in 1975, considered him “difficult.” Yet when given the freedom to follow his muse, Withers wrote, sang, and in many cases produced some of our most enduring classics, including “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean on Me,” “Use Me,” “Lovely Day,” “Grandma’s Hands,” and “Who Is He (and What Is He to You).” ^ “Not a lot of people got me,” Withers recently mused. “Here I was, this black guy playing an acoustic guitar, and I wasn’t playing the gut-bucket blues. People had a certain slot that they expected you to fit in to.” ^ Withers’ story is about as improb able as it could get. His first hit, “Ain’t No Sunshine,” recorded in 1971 when he was 33, broke nearly every pop music rule. Instead of writing words for a bridge, Withers audaciously repeated “I know” twenty-six times in a row. Moreover, the two-minute song had no introduction and was released as a throwaway B-side. Produced by Stax alumni Booker T. Jones for Sussex Records, the single’s struc ture, sound, and sentiment were completely unprecedented and pos sessed a melody and lyric that tapped into the Zeitgeist of the era. Like much of Withers’ work, it would ultimately prove to be timeless.

Social Movement Leaders 1. Orienting Questions: • What social processes are involved in the emergence of leaders in social movements? • What social factors– all apart from personality and leadership style – affect the likelihood that one or another person is elevated to that position? • How do leaders gain legitimate authority in social movements once they attain that position? • Is leadership democratic, autocratic, charismatic? • What are the different types of functional roles that leaders fill? • Are their different levels of leadership, each with specific goals and spheres of influence? • How are differences in opinion over goals, tactics, and overall strategy – which invariably occur – managed? K. Social Movement Leaders 2. a. Leaders are critical to social movements, because they: • inspire commitment, • mobilize resources, • create and recognize opportunities, • devise strategies frame demands, and • influence outcomes. Any approach to leadership in social movements must examine the actions of leaders within structural contexts that both limit and facilitate opportunities, recognize the different levels of leadership, and understand the various functional roles filled by different types of movement leaders at different stages in movement development.

  • FRED NEIL LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
FRED NEIL LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. Fred Neil (16 th March 1936 –7th July 2001) was one of the most compelling folk singer-songwriters in the 1960s and early 1970s. His marvellously deep, rich and impossibly low baritone enchanted everyone who has ever heard a Fred Neil song - and continues to do so. Surely one of the most beautiful voices in music. Bob Dylan said, “Fred had a strong, powerful voice, almost a bass voice, and a powerful sense of rhythm. He used to play mostly the type of songs that Josh White might sing. I used to sing and play harmonica for him, and then once in a while get to sing a song.” Yet as performer success eluded Fred, mainly because it was the last thing he pursued. A reluctance to tour didn’t help much either (a trait he shared with Bobby Charles and Harry Nilsson). According to his producer, Nik Venet, Fred was “probably the most famous and financially successful ‘cult artist’ in the history of the world...and could have been even bigger if he’d wanted to be....but he just didn’t!” Fred Neil showed up unexpectedly and was gone before you knew it. A loner and somewhat of a recluse, he was exceedingly hard to get to know and thus remained an enigma to most. John Sebastian, who played on his two Elektra albums, describes his background as “sketchy”. He is best known to the world through other people’s recordings of his material, such as ‘Everybody’s Talkin’’, made famous by Harry Nilsson as the theme to the movie Midnight Cowboy (and earned a Grammy) and ‘Other Side of This Life’, recorded by several but most notably by Jefferson Airplane.

  • Michael Downs Trying to Find My Li'l All 'N All (Sitting on Top of the World)
Michael Downs Trying to Find My Li’l All ’n All (Sitting on Top of the World) campground in Mississippi, a cold December dawn: I climbed from a A sleeping bag, befuddled by the clarity of morning. Blinking into sun-glare off the steady surfaces of ponds. Stumbling across frozen, heaved ground that had been mud the night before. Coffee could have helped, but I didn’t have any. My old dog nosed through dry leaves for the best place to piss. For two weeks she and I had traveled, a road-trip start to my fiftieth year. I’ d envisioned back roads from Baltimore to Austin, campgrounds and books, barbecue, reunion with loved ones—my parents, especially, given Mom’s flagging health and chronic pain. Kaimin would gain canine prestige by marking territory at the Clinton Library in Little Rock and Faulkner’s Rowan Oak in Oxford. That had been the plan, and much of it had come to pass. But this day involved a different agenda. Today I’ d see a man about a song—and not just any song, but one that for more than two decades had held me with an inex- plicable grip. On its face, “Sitting on Top of the World” is just an old blues tune, first recorded in 1930 by the Mississippi Sheiks. But it’s a shapeshifter, too, having been performed or recorded hundreds of times in everything from jazz to bluegrass to Texas swing, folk, and rock. Ray Charles, Jack White, the Carter Family, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Bill Frisell, The Grateful Dead—even the “Bye, bye, Miss American Pie” guy: they’ve all done it.
