Drive-In Monterey Pop Press Release July 10

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 10, 2020 TACAW and Crown Mountain Park present Monterey Pop at The Drive-In! [ BASALT, Colorado — July 10, 2020 ] TACAW (The Arts Campus at Willits) and Crown Mountain Park are, once again, partnering to present a drive-in movie event. The two groups will build on the success of last month's drive-in with a screening of the concert film Monterey Pop. At the beginning of the 1967 Summer of Love, the Monterey International Pop Festival captured the decade’s spirit and ushered in a new era of rock and roll. Monterey Pop chronicles the extraordinary event and features career-making performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, the Who, Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas, the Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, and the mind-blowing Ravi Shankar. TACAW and Crown Mountain park invite the community to come together for another safe and socially-distant drive-in. This event is made possible with support from The City of Aspen and the Wheeler Opera House. Monterey Pop at the Drive-In will take place on July 24 in Crown Mountain Park. Doors open at 7:45, and the film will begin at 8:45. The running time of Monterey Pop is 79 minutes. Tickets cost $19 per car and include a bag of kettle corn from Aspen Kettle Corn. They go on sale Monday, July 13, at TACAW.org. The event is expected to sell out quickly. “TACAW is excited to work with Crown Mountain Park to bring our community back together for another shared and safe cultural experience. Our first drive-in sold out in an hour, so adding additional dates wasn’t a difficult decision. Between these drive-in events and the Wednesday Night Live busker series, TACAW and our partners continue to deliver arts and culture during these strange times. Er findet sich nun auch im „Archiv der Rockumentaries“ der Zeitschrift Rock and Pop in the Movies: Ein Journal zur Analyse von Rock- und Popmusikfilmen. ZWEI NACHTRÄGE ZUM MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL: OTIS REDDING / JIMI HENDRIX Claus Tieber Rund 20 Jahre nach MONTEREY POP [1] machten D.A. Pennebaker und Chris Hegedus aus dem 1968 gedrehten Material zwei weitere Filme, in deren Mittelpunkt die Auftritte von Otis Redding und Jimi Hendrix stehen. Beide Shows sind vollständig dokumentiert, die Filme dauern 19 (Redding) bzw. 49 Minuten (Hendrix) und werden sowohl aus inhaltlichen wie aus pragmatischen Gründen zumeist gemeinsam gezeigt. Photo, Office of Historic Alexandria. t the center of Alexandria’s connection to rock and folk music fame was John Phillips. Born in South A Carolina, John and his family lived in Del Ray for much of his childhood. He attended George Washington High School, like Cass Elliot and Jim Morrison, graduating in 1953. He met and then married his high school sweetheart, Susie Adams, with whom he had two children, Jeffrey and Mackenzie, who later became famous in her own right. Phillips and Adams lived in the Belle Haven area after high school, but John left his young family at their Fairfax County home to start a folk music group called the Journeymen in New York City. The new group included lifelong friend and collaborator Philip Bondheim, later known as Scott McKenzie, also from Del Ray. The young men had met through their mothers, who were close friends. While in New York, John’s romantic interests turned elsewhere and he told Susie he would not be returning to her. Soon after, he married his second wife, Michelle Gilliam, who was barely out of her teens. They had one daughter, Chynna, who also gained fame as a singer. Gilliam and Phillips joined two former members of a group called the Mugwumps, Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot to form The Mamas and the Papas in 1965. This photo from that time shows Gilliam and Doherty to the left, Phillips and Elliot to the right, and fellow Alexandrian Bondheim at the center.

“It’s Hip to Unzip”: Open Land Communes and Their Neighbours in Northern California, 1966-1979 by John Stuart Miller B.A., The University of British Columbia, 2013 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) December 2016 © John Stuart Miller, 2016 Abstract This essay considers the histories of two countercultural, back-to-the-land communes located in northern California: Siskiyou County’s Black Bear Ranch and Sonoma County’s Morning Star Ranch. Both of these communes were highly influenced by the concept of Open Land, according to which anyone may freely live in a given space, particularly those individuals rejected or alienated by urban modernity. I examine the ways in which these communes related to and were shaped by their rural neighbours, as well as the local state, asserting the importance of the surrounding community in effecting events at each commune. I argue that positive relations with neighbours determined the continued viability of these communes, and that these positive relations in turn required a compromise of original founding principles including Open Land. As such it doesn’t have the same structure as a “normal” film reference book. Our aim is to promote the free exchange of ideas among fellow professionals, the cinematographer, their camera crew, manufacturer's, rental houses and related businesses. Pachuau 1 The use of music and song as a medium of human expression has been prevalent throughout history. Music has been used to explore and to give vent to a whole range of emotions, feelings and concerns- from the joyful to the disheartening. Music is therefore, a revelatory medium of not just an individual concern, but that of society as well. Protest music, whether through lyrics, performance or context, gives us an insight into discontent, both personal and societal. Basically, a protest song is a song which is associated with a movement for social change. According to Elizabeth J.Kizer, ―to protest is to verbalize a dissatisfaction with the status quo‖, and as such, a protest song verbalizes discontent, either overtly or covertly and calls for a change or rectification. The song of dissent… may appear to represent the feelings of a sole lyricist, but if the discontent is widely felt, then the protest becomes a voice for and about many people. In some instances, the identity of the composer becomes of secondary importance, and the song is a collective cry for change. The originator, or message source, tends to be forgotten, to some extent, as the protest song evolves as a cultural message. No longer is the protest viewed as an individual message but as part of a larger, cultural or social one. (Kizer, np) As an expression of cultural and political resistance, protest music has been prevalent as far back as the Peasant‘s Revolt of 1381 in England, wherein there was a movement for the reform of feudalism and the oppression of the working classes.
