ZWEI NACHTRÄGE ZUM MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL: OTIS REDDING / JIMI HENDRIX Claus Tieber Rund 20 Jahre nach MONTEREY POP [1] machten D.A. 167) enthalten (3 DVDs, USA 2002, kein Regional-Code). SHAKE! OTIS AT MONTEREY USA 1989 R: Don A. From Del Ray to Monterey Pop Festival
Office of Historic Alexandria City of Alexandria, Virginia Out of the Attic From Del Ray to Monterey Pop Festival Alexandria Times, February 11, 2016 Image: The Momas and the Popas. Photo, Office of Historic Alexandria. t the center of Alexandria’s connection to rock and folk music fame was John Phillips. Born in South A Carolina, John and his family lived in Del Ray for much of his childhood. He attended George Washington High School, like Cass Elliot and Jim Morrison, graduating in 1953. He met and then married his high school sweetheart, Susie Adams, with whom he had two children, Jeffrey and Mackenzie, who later became famous in her own right. Phillips and Adams lived in the Belle Haven area after high school, but John left his young family at their Fairfax County home to start a folk music group called the Journeymen in New York City. The new group included lifelong friend and collaborator Philip Bondheim, later known as Scott McKenzie, also from Del Ray. The young men had met through their mothers, who were close friends. While in New York, John’s romantic interests turned elsewhere and he told Susie he would not be returning to her. Soon after, he married his second wife, Michelle Gilliam, who was barely out of her teens. They had one daughter, Chynna, who also gained fame as a singer. Gilliam and Phillips joined two former members of a group called the Mugwumps, Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot to form The Mamas and the Papas in 1965. This photo from that time shows Gilliam and Doherty to the left, Phillips and Elliot to the right, and fellow Alexandrian Bondheim at the center. -

Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium
Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Ohio State University Alexandra Mary Jenkins, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Jared Gardner, Advisor Sean O’Sullivan Robyn Warhol Copyright by Alexandra Mary Jenkins 2014 Abstract Feminist activism in the United States and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s harnessed radical social thought and used innovative expressive forms in order to disrupt the “grand perspective” espoused by men in every field (Adorno 206). Feminist student activists often put their own female bodies on display to disrupt the disembodied “objective” thinking that still seemed to dominate the academy. The philosopher Theodor Adorno responded to one such action, the “bared breasts incident,” carried out by his radical students in Germany in 1969, in an essay, “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis.” In that essay, he defends himself against the students’ claim that he proved his lack of relevance to contemporary students when he failed to respond to the spectacle of their liberated bodies. He acknowledged that the protest movements seemed to offer thoughtful people a way “out of their self-isolation,” but ultimately, to replace philosophy with bodily spectacle would mean to miss the “infinitely progressive aspect of the separation of theory and praxis” (259, 266). Lisa Yun Lee argues that this separation continues to animate contemporary feminist debates, and that it is worth returning to Adorno’s reasoning, if we wish to understand women’s particular modes of theoretical ii insight in conversation with “grand perspectives” on cultural theory in the twenty-first century. -

It focuses on the work of Canadian political scientist Thomas Homer-Dixon, whose model of environmental conflict achieved considerable prominence in U.S. foreign policy circles in the 1990s. The thesis argues that this success was due in part to widely shared neo-Malthusian assumptions about the Third World, and to the support of private foundations and policymakers with a strategic interest in promoting these views. It analyzes how population control became an important feature of American foreign policy and environmentalism in the post-World War Two period. It then describes the role of the "degradation narrative" — the belief that population pressures and poverty precipitate environmental degradation, migration, and violent conflict — in the development of the environment and security field. -

Michael Lennon I went to Wharton with Donald Trump. We were both from praetorian families in Queens – his more martial than mine – in the first line of defense on the crabgrass frontier. We went out one night together to a hotel behind Rittenhouse Square. His date was a wised-up girl from Phila- delphia society who dreamed of becoming a stripper; mine was a retreating waitress, with a hyena body that gave off a whiff of the inquisi- tive. After the drinks – Don drank seltzer – we took them to a room we’d booked upstairs. My date gashed my face with her high-heel after I tried to shuffle her into one of the bedrooms. There was panting from Don’s quarters, the sound of a teetering vase, then mechanical chanting, until a final flesh-on-flesh “Whaa- aap!” A volley of sweet-talk followed. “If you want to be a dancer, there’s nobody who’s going New York City, 1968 to stop you, not even your father,” Don whis- pered. “I know some of the best dancers in this in a Trump Air commercial, which left him of Walt Whitman and Leon Trotsky, your the haste to give pleasure. The Rise of Talk Radio and Its Impact on Politics and Public Policy
Mount Rushmore: The Rise of Talk Radio and Its Impact on Politics and Public Policy Brian Asher Rosenwald Wynnewood, PA Master of Arts, University of Virginia, 2009 Bachelor of Arts, University of Pennsylvania, 2006 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Virginia August, 2015 !1 © Copyright 2015 by Brian Asher Rosenwald All Rights Reserved August 2015 !2 Acknowledgements I am deeply indebted to the many people without whom this project would not have been possible. First, a huge thank you to the more than two hundred and twenty five people from the radio and political worlds who graciously took time from their busy schedules to answer my questions. Some of them put up with repeated follow ups and nagging emails as I tried to develop an understanding of the business and its political implications. They allowed me to keep most things on the record, and provided me with an understanding that simply would not have been possible without their participation. When I began this project, I never imagined that I would interview anywhere near this many people, but now, almost five years later, I cannot imagine the project without the information gleaned from these invaluable interviews. I have been fortunate enough to receive fellowships from the Fox Leadership Program at the University of Pennsylvania and the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia, which made it far easier to complete this dissertation. I am grateful to be a part of the Fox family, both because of the great work that the program does, but also because of the terrific people who work at Fox.
