Yet there is currently limited research on European women immigrants’ transitions in the United States. This study examines personal and professional trajectories, in the United States, of Eastern European immigrant (EEI) women with prior educational attainment in their country of origin. This study examines the following issues: personal/social learning, developmental and professional experiences prior to and post migration, and social lives after the women’s arrival in the United States. The study discusses the results of in-depth interviews with eight EEI women living in Arizona and California and recounts these women’s life stories, gathered through open-ended questions that focused on areas of their personal and professional lives, such as childhood, marriage, immigration, education, family relations, socio-economic status, employment, child- rearing, and other significant life events. These areas impacted the women’s creation of personal beliefs and their ability to develop new identities in the United States. The study examines EEI women’s identity constructions within their life trajectory narratives. i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I dedicate this dissertation to my daughters, Angelica Josephina Ellis and Natalie Josephina Ellis, who are the lights of my life and my biggest achievements in life. These girls are my inspiration for a successful future. This dissertation is my way to show my daughters that women can have it all: a loving family, beautiful and smart children, and a professional career. These remarkable daughters saw their mommy spending a lot of hours by the computer, always wondering when mommy would have more free time. I know that they did not fully understand what I was doing, but I hope they never forget that I love them and believe in them, always and forever. I also dedicate this writing to my dear husband, Joseph Ellis, in my eyes, one of the greatest individuals. Someone with whom I am lucky to have fallen in love and built a family. He saw me through everyday struggles that at times seemed overwhelming. He gave me strength and encouragement to complete my study. I also dedicate this dissertation to my beautiful and remarkably strong mother, Larisa Nikolaevna Marsala. She was the person who inspired me to always do and be my best. She proved that dreams do come true and that I should follow my dreams. She has always provided me with support, help, and encouragement.     Segmentation vs. consolidation: The example of four Gypsy groups in CIS ELENA MARUSHIAKOVA and VESSELIN POPOV Processes with different directions, velocity and frequency flow constantly among Gypsy groups. These processes can be reduced to two main contradictory and cor- related tendencies: segmentation of the group into separate subgroup divisions, and consolidation of the separate subgroup divisions into one group. In both cases, the newly formed communities gradually accept the dimensions of a new, unique Gyp- sy group. The purpose of this article is to examine the processes of segmentation and consolidation based on the example of four Gypsy groups, Dajfa/Tajfa, Krimur- ja/Kırımitika Roma, Kišinjovcurja/Kišinjovurja, Kitajcurja/Kitajake Rom, based on an evaluation of the history of the groups and their contemporary situation. The material shows the way in which the processes are running under different circum- stances and allows us to arrive at the conclusion that a single universal model and directional development of the Gypsy group does not and cannot exist. Even though it is still quite debatable whether the Gypsies can be regarded as an integral and unit- ed community (Marushiakova and Popov 200b: 35–53), there is no doubt that the Gypsies are a non-homogeneous socio-cultural unit that is hier- archically structured on different taxonomical levels. A main scientific category, which is traditionally used by scholars of Rom- ani studies, is the ‘Gypsy Group’ (the notions tribe, nation or even caste are also used).

When tlie present volume was originally planned it was intended to contain an account of Russian folk- lore in general—of the stories, legends, riddles, pro- verbs, and epic as well as lyric poems, which oral tradition has preserved among the Russian peasantry. But I soon found that the subject was one which, if treated at all in detail, would require more time and space than I had expected. So I thought it best to restrict myself for the present to a part of it only, leaving the rest to be described afterwards. In this first instalment of the work, therefore, I have dealt chiefly, though not exclusively, with the lyric poetry of the peasantry; the next will be mainly devoted to their Popular Tales and their Metrical Romances. In order to render intelligible the songs I have quoted, it has been necessary to give some slight account of the religious ideas attributed to the ancient VI PREFACE. Slavonians and the superstitions current among tlieir descendants, as well as of some of tlie manners and customs of tlie Eussian peasantry, especially with regard to marriages and funerals. But my book can make no pretence to any thing like a satisfactory grappling with the difficult problems—mythological, ethnological, philological, historical—suggested by the study of Slavonic antiquities.
