Amen Dear Alumni, Parents, Grandparents and Friends, Then rising in a courtyard over earth and memories of gardens, rose the bones, the sinews of this Chapel, careful birth of wood and steel and mortar, wailing tones of hammer, saw and drill. We watched the flesh appear: curved wall, stained glass, bold fresco, stone-Italian artifacts-each forms the mesh of beauty, sacred silence in the drone of life. But then the tower rings its call and holy noise calls forth the campus, town as though in Umbria, where valleys fall in green and gold, like vestments, on the down of springtime soil.     MERTON AND THE TIGER LILY by Chrysogonus Waddell, o. c. s. o. Merton, Merton's biographer Michael Mott, and it would seem, the generality of Merton's readers, are in complete accord. What Are These Wounds?, writes Mott, was certainly "the worst writing Thomas Merton could do."1 Fr. Louis himself, the year before his death, and in terms even more categorical, had already anticipated Mott's censure. On 6 February 1967, he drew up in graph form an evaluation of his books.2 What Are These Wounds? there enjoys a very dubious distinction: it is the only book entered on the very bottom horizontal grid-line. It is not just " Poor;" not even, like Exile Ends in Glory, "Very poor." It is quite simply "Awful." The full title of this awful book, brought out by Bruce Publishing Company in late February of 1950, is What Are These Wounds?: The Life of a Cistercian Mystic, Saint Lutgarde of Aywieres. But this was not the original title. Fr. Louis' preferred title - a title evidently less preferred by the publishers - was The Tiger Li/y; l and it is the image of the tiger lily that figures in the opening paragraph of the preface to the book: 1.
