Weldon Church Renovation I have written two times about church renovation in past bulletins. Today, I want to share a few more words. A church building must pray well. Churches are not ancient monuments but living buildings where we feel at home: we find God and we meet others. If faith is alive, Christian culture does not become ‘past’ but remains living and present. And if faith is alive, today we can answe r the enduring and constant voice of Beauty that Holy Mother Church gives to the world in her art. Here at Sacred Heart the two spires, pitched roof, high ceiling and high altars in the sanctuary all manifest the transcendent beauty, which means they point to heaven. Beauty conveys truth and the truth is the incarnation. We need the beauty of Christian art to celebrate the blessedness of the Catholic Faith. I inherited the ideas for this project from the previous pastor. I have spoken to him as well as various parishioners, the parish and finance councils, and the reconstructed beautification committee, which has some members from the past building committee. So, I will identify what needs to be done. We will have new pews; flooring in nave and sanctuary. We will build new sanctuary pulpit and chairs. Painting: We will have completely new paint on the walls and ceiling to open up and brighten the space. Painting will include 6 saints in the medallions in the upper walls (Saints will be those associated with the Sacred Heart). There will be two murals of biblical scenes to the right and left of the high altar. We will have two paintings on the back wall, one of St. Boniface and one of St. Peter Canisius. They are the 1st and 2nd apostles to the Germans. The estimate of the cost for the project is $1,100,000. we are working with an architectural arts company as well as local talent. If you have any questions, you may speak to me or members of the beautification committee which are listed below as well as online. The project will begin on August 5th, 2019 and we hope to complete by early December 2019. Simply put, we can do better than this to celebrate sacred tradition. Beautification Committee Members: Sarah Brenner, Jane Brand, Dave Konda, Jenny Peloquin, Bill Quaney, Dan Seiler, Fred Spexarth, Danielle Stephen, Bill Wapelhorst Our Lady of Guadalupe In 1520 Hernán Cortez conquered México. The conquistadors mistreated the native peoples terribly and made few converts to the Christian faith. In December 1531, St. Juan Diego received words and a mission from a beautiful woman who identified herself as the perfect and perpetual Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus. Our Lady of Guadalupe gave Juan “spiritual guidance about a love that can be trusted, a love that gives dignity, and a love that is personal.” His tilma holds an image of a woman that was made by the hand of God, and it has survived to this day in the basilica in Mexico City on the hill of Tepeyac. It was once proclaimed, that God has not done this for any other nation —non facit taliter omni nationem . She is the tool for evangelization and of enculturation as her mestiza image is a mix of European and native Mexican blood. “In America, the mestiza face of the Virgin of Guadalupe was from the start a symbol of the enculturation of the Gospel, of which she has been the lodestar and the guide. Through her powerful intercession, the Gospel will penetrate the hearts of the men and women of America and permeate their cultures, transforming them from within.” (St John Paul II Ecclesia in America 70.) In our diocese, and all of the Americas throughout the western hemisphere, she is the bridge between cultures and St. John Paul II elevated her day, Dec 12, to a Feast. She evangelizes in her very presence as a beautiful and living symbol through her pregnancy with our savior. December 9 is the Memorial of St. Juan Diego. - Fr. Weldon House of Jesus, of whose fullness we have all received, have mercy on us. St. Veronica Giuliani, pray for us. St. Lutgardis of Aywieres, pray for us. • Our Lady Angels
CHAPEL OF Our Lady of the Angels Loving God, at this time in the life of our extraordinary school, we turn to you with grateful hearts for all that we have accomplished, and with great anticipation for what is yet to be. Bless us with a sense of unity, a spirit of cooperation, and a generous heart as we face the responsibilities and challenges of “completing the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels.” Please guide us, strengthen us, and bless us with Your Presence, now and throughout this special effort. Amen Dear Alumni, Parents, Grandparents and Friends, Then rising in a courtyard over earth and memories of gardens, rose the bones, the sinews of this Chapel, careful birth of wood and steel and mortar, wailing tones of hammer, saw and drill. We watched the flesh appear: curved wall, stained glass, bold fresco, stone-Italian artifacts-each forms the mesh of beauty, sacred silence in the drone of life. But then the tower rings its call and holy noise calls forth the campus, town as though in Umbria, where valleys fall in green and gold, like vestments, on the down of springtime soil. Chapel, longed-for place, dear body of Christ’s children, grant us grace. —Annabelle Mosley ’97 I invite you to share in the experience of this view-book and hope that you will consider helping us complete the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels, the centerpiece of Saint Anthony’s High School. Sapientia Aedificavit Sibi Domum “Wisdom has built herself a home” Proverbs 9 May God Bless You and Your Family, Brother Gary Cregan, O.S.F.

  • Merton and the Tiger Lily
MERTON AND THE TIGER LILY by Chrysogonus Waddell, o. c. s. o. Merton, Merton's biographer Michael Mott, and it would seem, the generality of Merton's readers, are in complete accord. What Are These Wounds?, writes Mott, was certainly "the worst writing Thomas Merton could do."1 Fr. Louis himself, the year before his death, and in terms even more categorical, had already anticipated Mott's censure. On 6 February 1967, he drew up in graph form an evaluation of his books.2 What Are These Wounds? there enjoys a very dubious distinction: it is the only book entered on the very bottom horizontal grid-line. It is not just " Poor;" not even, like Exile Ends in Glory, "Very poor." It is quite simply "Awful." The full title of this awful book, brought out by Bruce Publishing Company in late February of 1950, is What Are These Wounds?: The Life of a Cistercian Mystic, Saint Lutgarde of Aywieres. But this was not the original title. Fr. Louis' preferred title - a title evidently less preferred by the publishers - was The Tiger Li/y; l and it is the image of the tiger lily that figures in the opening paragraph of the preface to the book: 1. Michael Mou, The Seven Mountains of Thomas Merton (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1964), p. 257. Hereafter referred to in the text as M ott. 2. Reproduced in Ja mes forest, Thomas Merton: A Pictorial Biography (New Yo rk : Paulist Press, 1980), p. 65 and in Introductions East and West : The Foreign Prefaces of Thomas Merton; edited by Robert E.
