2 bottle case GASCONY & ST. MONT

Producteurs de Plaimont

Producteurs Plaimont are located at Saint-Mont, in the Gers, in Gascony. Arrufiac, This is a co-operative operating to some of the highest standards of any such enterprise in France. The grapes are Petit Courbu, Petit and Gros Manseng, , Ugni-Blanc and Listan.

The Saint-Mont began in the fourth century BC, when plants were imported by the Greeks. It is thus one of the oldest vineyards in France. In 1050 the Abbey of Saint-Mont was founded by Benedictine monks. The monks, as always, were particularly interested in the area as it had already been colonised by the vine. They developed the vineyards further to the point that Gascony wines were actually exported to the as early as the XIVth century.

The five wines we have listed below all are very good examples of the region, but we particularly like the Vignes Retrouvees as this wine has been aged on its lees in order to give more structure to the wine.

Domaine du Tariquet

Domaine du Tariquet is owned and managed by Yves Grassa. The estate was originally used for the production of fine Armagnacs, a selection of which we list towards the end of this Wine List. In the late 1980s, Yves decided to move into the production of unfortified wine. He invested hugely in what are still considered to be "state of the art" facilities. Many of his contempories thought him to be completely crazy but his vision proved timely, as it coincided with a major increase in the price of which at the time was one of the best selling inexpensive wines in the UK. Yves' Cotes de Gascogne wines managed to fill the gap left by Muscadet, and as the wines were not nearly as dry they also were able to compete against the invaders from the New World. He now produces an impressive range of still wines of which we list a small selection.

Chateau Kirwan takes its name from the Irishman, Mark Kirwan, who owned the estate in the mid 18th. century. It is located on the plateau of Cantenac with some of the finest gravelly soil in all of the Medoc. The wines are elegant, well structured and typical of the finest in the Margaux appellation. The vines are thinned out in order to encourage maximum concentration and ripeness in the grapes. These are then hand picked and sorted before being crushed. After fermentation the wines are aged in oak barrels (35% of which are renewed each year) for 18 months. The finest wine is sold under the Chateau Kirwan label. The rest, largely made from younger vines is used for the second wine "Charmes de Kirwan".

Chateau Lynch Bages overlooks the Gironde estuary at the entrane to Pauillac. The estate once belonged to the famous Lynch family, of Irish origin, and was acquired by Jean-Charles Cazes in 1934. In the 1970's his grandson Jean-Michel Cazes invested hugely in the estate particularly in a magnificent facility. However, he kept the old wooden vats as a reminder of wine making in the 19th century. Over the last twenty years the estate has confirmed its reputation of producing wine of a consistently high quality and as a result the wines have proved to be not only a huge pleasure to drink but also a good investment.

7 SAINT JULIEN bottle case

Chateaux Langoa and Leoville Barton have belonged to the same family for six generations. Hugh Barton, already a merchant, was forced to leave France at the time of the French Revolution in 1793. He returned to Ireland, his native country, but remained in touch with his French associates. In 1821 he bought Chateau Langoa Barton and in 1826 he purchased part of the huge Leoville estate and created Chateau Leoville Barton. Four generations later Ronald Barton inherited the two estates. However in 1940 during the German occupation a Barton was once again forced to leave France. He returned to the vineyards in 1945 and ran the estates until 1983 when he handed them on to his nephew, the present owner, Anthony Barton. Along with his daughter Lilian, they continue to run the two estates. The wines are some of the finest to be found in this appellation and they always seem to be amongst the most reasonably priced wines of their class within Bordeaux.

Château de Tracy. Comte Henry d’ASSAY and his sisters, owners of the domaine of Château de Tracy, are the descendants of a Scottish family. The first members of the Scottish noble Stutt family were members of a large army that came from Scotland in the 15th century to help the future king Charles VII of France during the Hundred Years War. After naturalisation, their name was gallicised to become d'Estutt or Destutt. In 1586 François Stutt, married the Lady of Tracy.

The Château de Tracy still belongs to the family and is run by Juliette d'Assay, the youngest daughter of the Count and Countess Alain d'Estutt d'Assay.

Château de Tracy is situated to the north of the Pouilly-Fumé area, on hillsides which overlook the Loire. The vineyard is south-west facing, on flint and kimmeridgian soils and extends from "Tracy hill" to the "Champs de Cris" plateau. 32 hectares are in production.

Château de Tracy intervenes as little as possible during vinification to preserve the intrinsic character of the wine. Each vineyard parcel is vinified separately and treatments are kept to a minimum. This is helped by a long ageing period in bulk (8 months) with the occasional bâtonnage (lees-stirring). The wine is then lightly fined and filtered. Only the best cuvées are selected for the Château de Tracy wines.

The reputation of the Geoffray family who are the proprietors of Chateau Thivin far exceeds the size of the property, which is modest in the extreme. The history of the Chateau can be traced back to the 12th. Century when it was owned by Hubert 111, Lord of Beaujeau. By the 17th. Century it was owned by the Marquis de Vielry and was known as the Clos de Brouilly. Much of the present reputation of the Chateau was established by Claude Geoffray before the 2nd world war. It is now carried on by his grand nephew Claude who is the present proprietor and a skilled and experienced wine maker. He is also one of 50 growers in the region who is certified to label his wine “Terra ” which is a system of working with the vines and the natural environment to reduce the quantity of chemicals used.

Domaine Gonon

Jean Francoise Gonon inherited this Domaine from his father ten years ago. At that time, his father – who’d always wanted to be in the gendarmerie rather than a vigneron – sold all their grapes to negociants. Since taking over the wine making, Jean Francoise has greatly reduced the amount of wine he sells in bulk and is now concentrating on establishing an international reputation for his wine and his Domaine.

We have now been importing from Jean Francois for 12 years and his wines have deservedly become firm favourites with many of our clients.

Domaine Bachey-Legros

In 1992 Christiane Bachey Legros took over the running of the family vineyard, which dates from the beginning of the 19th century. She had worked as a psychologist and was convinced by her son's Lenaic & Sam to take over the property, which was at the time rented out.

Since then they have worked the 12 hectare estate, divided between parcels in Maranges and in Chassagne Montrachet. Judging by the quality of the wines they seem to have successfully carried off this formidable challenge. The wines are for the most part derived from old vines and reveal lovely concentration and complexity, underpinned by fine balance, finesse and elegance.

CHABLIS

Domaine des Malandes

Richard and Amandine of Domaine des Malandes. In 1949, our grandparents, André and Gabrielle Tremblay, harvested their first grapes in their Fourchaume vineyard. At the time, the freeze and lack of mechanization made the work of the vineyard particularly difficult and unprofitable. Despite these difficulties, our grandparents developed their estate, and passed on to their daughter, Lyne Marchive, 7Ha of vine. Lyne created her own estate in Chablis in 1973.

For 40 years, she extended the farming area, expanded the cellar and modernized the equipments. She has traveled the world selling her Chablis at the best restaurants in Asia, Europe and the Americas. In 2018, she decides to bequeath the estate to her children, Richard and Amandine. Her eldest daughter, Marion, herself in the world of wine in California, is associated in the Domaine des Malandes. Richard also created his own in Moulin à Vent called Domaine Richard Rottiers. Wineservice is also delighted to carry this wine.

The first records of a Parent in wine making appear in the local parish records of 1650 and refer to "Claude Parent a wine grower". In 1787, Etienne Parent established a profesionnal and personnal relationship with Thomas Jefferson who was later to become the President of the United States. Etienne was also one of the first Burgundian wine merchants to export his wines across the Atlantic Ocean. Early in the 19th century Claude-Jacques Parent founded the Parent Domaine which has remained fully intact since then. Today the estate is run by the formidable, yet charming, Anne Parent who continues to make fine, elegant, harmonius and yet powerful wines which are sold throughout the world.

Domaine Rossignol-Trapet (organic)

In 1990, Jacques Rossignol and his two sons Nicolas and David decided to take back their family vines from Domaine Trapet and set up Domaine Rossignol-Trapet. Winemaking in the family dates back as far as the 16th century when the family was based in Volnay. High density planting, green harvesting, low yields and strict selection are the order of the day in the vineyards. In the cellar the wines are made classically, making for a house style which is rich and silky and balanced to age over the medium term.

Domaine Rossignol-Trapet now operates exclusively organic and biodynamic and this is fundamental to the whole Domaine. Their initial motivation was environmental and on observing the greater purity and concentration in their wines, allied to healthier and stronger vines they now feel more than justified in that decision. The wines are an absolute delight!

Domaine de la Vougeraie

This is the Boisset family domaine and consists of parcels of vines acquired over a period of more than thirty years. These Estates now encompass some of the finest vineyards in the Cote de Beaune and Cote de Nuits, but its heart is in Vougeot where they own the renowned monopole – Clos Blanc de Vougeot. The wine maker, Pascal Marchand is the man responsible for creating the reputation of this estate and we are very confident that these wines will feature on the finest wine lists around the world in the near future.

The first vintage under the Domaine de la Vougeraie name was in 1999, and we were delighted to be amongst very few UK merchants to be offered some of these fabulous wines. We have subsequently visited the winery every year and been given the opportunity to select our favourite wines which are now listed below. This is very much a Domaine to watch for the future and I would highly recommend their addition to every cellar.

RHONE

The Côtes du Rhône is home to some of the most dependable wines at prices that are equally appealing. The reason for the affordability is a combination of the abundance of wine produced and the concentration on making fine wines rather than marketing them. Of the twenty three grape varieties grown in the Cotes du Rhone, Syrah and Grenache are the most commonly used for reds with Mourvedre, Cinsault or Carignan added. The whites are produced from , , , , Clairet and Bourboulenc grapes. The herbs that grow abundantly in the area give the wines hints of lavender, juniper, bay laurel, fennel, rosemary, sage and thyme.

We have listed below and on the next page some excellent examples of the wide range of wines grown throughout the valley, from the Syrah (Shiraz) dominated vineyards in the north to the soft and silky Grenache and Mourvedre wines of the south. Although the selection is relatively small we are very confident that this region that has a wine to suit any palate and we hope you will find a wine you enjoy from our range.

Chateau de Beaucastel and other wines from the Perrin Family

At Chateau de Beaucastel all thirteen of Chateauneuf du Papes permitted grape varieties are planted. The average age of the vines are fifty years. Mourvedre sets the style as the dominant in the blend, making Beaucastel unique among its neighbours. Aromas of leather, tobacco and red soft berried fruits combine with a powerful structure to make a wine that will improve with age.

Coudoulet de Beaucastel is the second wine of the Chateau. Also organically grown and vinified in the same manner as Beaucastel, it represents exceptional value. All these wines are made by the Perrin family who have owned the Estate for a period in excess of ninety years. It is now considered to be the premier estate in Chateauneuf du Pape.

Nyetimber is made from one hundred percent estate-grown grapes and is regarded as England’s finest . Owner and Chief Executive Eric Heerema and winemaker Cherie Spriggs are committed to producing wines of exceptional quality. Nyetimber uses only its own grapes from its own vineyards, each of which was deliberately selected to be south-facing with either sandy or chalk soils. All Nyetimber vineyards are located in the lee of the South Downs which affords them shelter from the coastal winds. Prior to , the grapes are tasted to ensure the best flavour development before picking. Every single grape is picked by hand at the optimal time, a decision that is made on a parcel by parcel basis.

Joseph Perrier established this Champagne House in 1825 at Châlon-sur-Marne, where Perrier’s father, François- Alexandre, had helped his father-in-law in a small wine business. Châlon-sur-Marne, is now off the beaten track in terms of the Champagne trade, but in the 19th century it occupied a more central position. More firms had premises in the town then and just ten years before Joseph Perrier set up business, Napoleon had visited Châlon-sur-Marne to see for himself the famous cellars of the town

On his death in 1870, Joseph Perrier left a successful business to his grandson Gabriel Perrier, who had little inclination to run a Champagne house and eventually sold the firm to Paul Pithois in 1888. Pithois continued to develop the House and undertook research on wine fermentation with Louis Pasteur. Today, under the leadership of Jean-Claude Fourmon (a descendant of Paul Pithois), it owns 20 hectares of vineyards in Cumieres, Hautvillers and Damery. They produce around 60,000 cases and the U.K. has become the company's most important market.

Champagne Louis Roederer is one of the largest remaining, independent and privately owned, Champagne Houses. It was founded in 1776 and within 100 years it had gained an international reputation for Champagne of the highest quality. In 1876 the Tsar Alexander 11 a Champagne connoisseur demanded that Champagne served at his table be noticeably different from that available elsewhere in his court. Informed of this, Louis Roederer instructed a Flemish glassmaker to design a bottle specifically for the Tsar. Hence the creation of Roederer and the unique flat-bottomed bottle.

Brut Premier is the incarnation of the Roederer style and combines the fruitiness and freshness of youth with the vinosity of fully mature wine. It is a blend of 56% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay and 10% . 10% of reserve wines are used in the final blend and these have been aged in oak barrels for between 2 and 6 years. Brut Premier is an excellent aperitif Champagne and it can also accompany light fish dishes.

Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée N.V. embodies the House style. Deliciously fresh and easy to drink, the blend is composed of over 100 different Crus (with an average 94% rating). After being aged for over four years, liqueur d'expédition is added and the champagne is matured for a further six months. the result is a delicate yet complex nose, with hints of citrus fruit, and wild flowers (honeysuckle). Perfect as an apéritif, it also goes very well with food. Cépages: Chardonnay 55%, Pinot Noir 35%, Pinot Meunier 10%

The renowned Rose is produced from 100% Pinot Noir grapes from a total of ten 100% rated Grands Crus villages. This champagne gets its glorious pink colour and rounded red fruit flavours from a process know as 'saigneé' in which the skins of the grapes are left in contact with the juice for three days. This Champagne makes a delicious apéritif, but is also a good match for a variety of different dishes, particularly puddings. Cépage: Pinot Noir 100%

To complete the range there is the unique "Ultra Brut" and the Grand Siecle. The Ultra Brut is a blend which combines a small majority of chardonnay with pinot noir and is made exclusively with grapes from very ripe harvests. Bunch selection is rigorous, to ensure that only the grapes with high sugar levels and low acidity are retained. These conditions are necessary to create a finished champagne that has the required balance without any dosage. The ageing is long, lasting for at least four years. This champagne pairs well with caviar or foie gras, seafood or oysters - and even accompanying a cigar at the end of a meal, were that still allowed!

The Grand Siecle grapes are supplied by twelve of the most prestigious crus or villages, all of them Grands Crus classified at 100%, such as Ambonnay, Verzenay, Mailly, Avize, Cramant, Chouilly and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Within the vineyards of these crus, only the very best plots are selected, as are the finest musts from the pressings. The blended wine is then aged for about 5 years.

Champagne Bollinger was established in 1829 by Jacques Bollinger and Paul Renaudin. Over the years the vineyard holdings have been steadily increased with the largest expansion taking place under the stewardship of the legendary Mme Lilly Bollinger. She ran the company between 1941 and 1977 and today it is managed by her great-nephew, Ghislain de Montgolfier.

Bollinger has a reputation for producing muscular wines with body, depth and power, and is today considered one of the "Great" Champagne houses. 70% of the grapes come from the firm's own vineyards. 80% of the harvest is barrel- fermented with the wines being kept on their yeast lees for an extended period of time. The results are classic, complex, Pinot-dominated with the ability to age gracefully for many years.

Billecart Salmon is one of the few remaining Champagne houses to be owned by the original family and was established in 1818 by Nicolas-François Billecart. Most of Billecart-Salmon's fruit comes from a small vineyard holding, though this is supplemented with grapes bought in from the Marne Valley and the . Meticulous production techniques, from the use of their own cultured yeast to its long, slow, cool fermentation, ensure that the family has 100% control of production.

Billecart-Salmon is renowned for the quality of its delicate rosé, while the Brut Réserve (a blend of three vintages) is a beautifully harmonious and balanced wine. All have the ability to age very well.

Chateau Musar

Chateau Musar was established in 1930 by Gaston Hochar in an 18th century Castle whose cellars now provide storage for over a million bottles of maturing wine produced from vineyards in the Bekaa Valley.

Musar Jeune is a new wine to the British market. The wine can be described as a "mini-Musar" as it shows very similar characteristics to the Chateau Musar but at a much younger stage of development and at a more affordable price.

1045 Musar Jeune White 2017 (Viognier, , Chardonnay) 9.82 117.84 1046 Musar Jeune Rosé 2015/16 9.82 117.84 1047 Musar Jeune Red 2014/16 (Syrah, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon) 9.82 117.84

Hochar Red is a blend of Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and a touch of Grenache. The grapes selected for this wine come from very old vines with a yield of around 15 hectolitres per hectare. The wine spends nine months in French oak and as with all the "Chateau" wines, it is not fined or filtered resulting in a rich and complex wine. It is dark red "bloody" colour with a nose of woody smokiness, burnt cherry, caralmised oranges, leather and warm stewed fruits. The finish is smooth, warm and mellow.

654 Hochar Pere et Fils 2013/14 Red 14.60 175.20

Chateau Musar is made from a variety of grapes including Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged for up to twenty four months in oak casks before being bottled, and then only released for sale after another five years of cellarage. Please note that we have many older vintages available on request.

"Musar Whites", says Serge Hochar "are my first reds: they are best served at room temperature, they will go with more foods, they are more serious and their dimensions are bigger than any of my reds, but they are much more difficult". The wine is a blend of the indigenous grape varieties Obaideh and Merwah which are sourced from vineyards at a cool elevation on the slopes of Mount Lebanon. Both grape varieties are barrel fermented in French oak and only 2500 cases were produced.

Giuseppe Lonardi

Giuseppe Lonardi divides his time between his winery and the trattoria he runs with his family. Encouraged by the results his wines are achieving both locally and internationally, he devotes the majority of his time to making his wines. The cellars were built in the mid eighties beneath his house, and although small they are very well equipped and meticulously kept. The wines are warm, attractively deep and very long.

If you like Amarone but baulk at the price, then try Valpolicella "Ripasso", a similar style at around half the price.

Pio Cesare

Pio Cesare is an historic family-owned estate is named after its founder Cesare Pio, who established the business in 1881. It is based in Alba in the heart of the Piemont region, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. The surrounding hills provide ideal exposures for grape growing with unique micro-climates. The confluence of cold Alpine air with warm maritime moisture regularly creates a misty glow, or ‘nebbia’, over these foothills, hence , the great red variety of the region.

In the 1950s, Pio Cesare was one of the first producers to export quality Barolo to the UK market and thus develop the wine’s reputation. Today, the founder’s great grandson Pio Boffa continues the family tradition producing wines in a style that manages to balance the best of the old with the best of the new.

It is an undeniable fact that great wine producers are those with great vineyards. Pio Cesare own 52 hectares amongst the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco. The various vineyards produce grapes of differing character with which the tradition of a blended Barolo creates a harmonious wine. Individual sites include 16 hectares of the noted ‘Ornato’ vineyard in Barolo and 18 hectares of ‘Il Bricco’ in Barbaresco.

Bodegas Berceo was founded in 1801. It is the oldest winery of the city of Haro, the heart of appellation. The name of the winery is related to the history and the culture of Spain. It was named after Gonzalo de Berceo, a monk and poet of the XIII century who lived in Suso Monastery (La Rioja). Almansa

Bodegas Piqueras is in the DOC of Almansa which lies about 100kms inland from Valencia and Alicante and it has an extreme continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. The area is ideal for the cultivation of Tempranillo (known locally as Cencibel), Monastrell, Syrah and Garnacha grapes. The average rainfall is very low, resulting in low yields of high quality grapes.

Bodega Piqueras was founded in 1915 by Mario Bonete and the family began to bottle their own wine in 1961. Marius Reserva is produced from each of 30% Tempranillo, Monastrell and Garnacha with Syrah making up the balance of the blend. The wine is matured in American oak for 12 months and 10 months in bottle before release.

Pask Winery, Hawkes Bay

The Pask Winery was founded by Chris Pask in 1985. The production has increased steadily over the last 33 years to around 50,000 cases, based largely on Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon which they believe are the best varieties for their estate in Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay. Chris Pask pioneered grape plantings in the Gimblet Gravels and the winery now owns and manages over 100 hectares of vineyard in what has arguably become the leading viticultural site in New Zealand.

Although New Zealand is rightly recognised for its fine Sauvignons and Chardonnays, we would urge you to try the Pask red wines as we feel they probably reflect the true strength of the Gimblett region.

Alan McCorkindale Winery, , North Canterbury

Alan McCorkindale used to be the chief winemaker for the Winery in Marlborough in the 1990's. During his time there he blitzed the Air New Zealand Wine Awards with his . He won the Riesling trophy for four out of his five years with Corbans. He later decided to create his own winery in Waipara where the honours have continued to accrue.

The Waipara area is Limestone-based soil and Alan believes that the mineral character of limestone imparts extra character to the wines. He describes his wines as classic rather than commercial and as a result they are equally delightful on their own or with food.

Sauvignon. A delightful textbook fragrance of fresh currant leaf, gooseberry and a hint of tropical fruit. A classic, vibrant and pure example, with the added benefit of being more understated than some other Marlborough Sauvignons.

Pinot Noir. A perfume of spiced black and red fruits with a broad and delightfully layered "summer-fruit" palate. Elegant and refined.

Domain Road, Central

Graeme and Gillian Crosby had had successful careers in Real Estate when they discovered a perfect plot of land in the centre of the historic gold-mining region of Bannockburn. On a single estate block of 6.5 hectares that was originally an apricot orchard, their main focus is Pinot Noir with Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. The first Pinot vines were planted in 2002 and are now really beginning to show their true character and potential.

Sauvignon Blanc - Don’t expect Marlborough-style passion fruits here, this is Central Otago with its own unique expression of Sauvignon. Herbaceous yes, with a fuller rounded palate but without the canned-pea fatness associated with regions further north. Fresh citrus acidity and good mouthfeel.

Pinot Noir - Gold at the IWC, Gold at the Royal New Zealand Easter Show Wine Awards and a fabulous review in New Zealand’s top food and wine magazine...don’t take their word for it, try it yourself. Pure, dense, Pinot fruitiness, bursting with strawberry jam flavours and light silky tannins.

All of the wines are made from moderate or low yields and undergo intensive management and hand-harvesting. Eveline Fraser is the highligh-talented winemaker whose previous career saw her as the senior winemaker at Cloudy Bay.

Since the winery's UK launch in 2009, they have received significant acclaim at the World Wine Awards in 2013 and have been multiple medal winners over the last five years.

Mitchell Winery, Clare Valley, South Australia

Jane and Andrew Mitchell established the Mitchell Winery in 1975 on their family property in the western hills of the Clare Valley. Andrew is one of the most intuitive wine makers in Australia. Their winery is an old slate built apple shed with the white wines being made in stainless steel to maximise freshness whilst the reds are fermented in slate baths and basket pressed to obtain perfect extraction. The Mitchell's aim is to make wines with “concentration and depth of flavour, but also with finesse”.

The grapes for Mitchell wines come from their own vineyards. The Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the Sevenhill vineyards and Riesling and 50 year old Grenache vines are sourced from their Watervale vineyard. The wines consistently receive acclaim, not only in Australia but throughout the world, for their intense varietal fruit character and well defined finish.

Wakefield, Clare Valley, South Australia

Situated in the heart of South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, Wakefield has become one of Australia’s best loved and most trusted . The tale of Wakefield's wine-making goes back a few years – three generations in fact, and all began with Bill Taylor Senior, and his love of a certain Bordeaux wine.

Originally wine merchants in Sydney, a passion for wine was all part of being a Taylor, and in particular, for the famous French Clarets such as Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux’s Medoc region. It was this long held fascination for these wines which inspired the family’s foray into winemaking, and provides the inspiration and winemaking philosophy behind all Wakefield's winemaking today – to produce premium wines of exceptional and comparable quality in Australia.

Franschhoek Cellars, Western Cape

The town of Franschhoek derives its name from the French Huguenot families who were allocated farms in the Oliphantshoek (Elephants Corner) valley in about 1690. Some of these Huguenots were experienced viticulturists and established the tradition of wine making in the valley.

Franschhoek Vineyards was founded in 1945 by a group of local grape farmers to vinify their grapes on a co-operative basis. Today the cellar has around 82 independent producers and shareholders. The wines offer excellent value for money and the winery produces wines of a consistently high standard year in and year out.

Robertson Winery, Robertson Valley, Western Cape

Robertson Winery had its humble beginnings in a charming missionary church on the outskirts of Robertson, and it’s history is closely linked to that of the town. The prosperous town of Robertson was named after Dr William Robertson, a Scottish minister who arrived in South Africa in 1822. Amongst his many congregations in this vast country was an area known as “Over Het Roode Zand”. When in 1852 the community established a town, they named it Robertson in recognition and appreciation of his many services.

During the late 19th century a worker community occupied the land where the Robertson Winery now stands. They built a stone church and their congregation was serviced by missionaries. When Robertson Winery was established in 1941, the small church was no longer in use and the winery acquired the building for its winemaking and cellaring operations. Today, the historic church still plays an important part in the maturation of the wines and it has regained its rightful place at the heart of this progressive winery.

Viljoensdrift, Breede River, Robertson Valley, Western Cape

Viljoensdrift is nestled south of the Elandsberg Mountains, on the banks the Breede River, 90 minutes from Cape Town. It is home to the Viljoen family whose heritage of winemaking dates back to 1818 when their French Huguenot forefathers first planted vines. Today, brothers Fred and Manie Viljoen continue this proud tradition, producing award-winning wines with global appeal.

Viljoensdrift’s success can be attributed to their pioneering spirit, the quality of teamwork from vineyard to cellar and their deep-rooted commitment to working in harmony with nature. The rich, fertile soils fed by the Breede River create the perfect for growing the noble varietals Shiraz, Pinotage and Chardonnay.

Stellar Winery, Western Cape

This was South Africa's first Fairtrade & Organic winery and was established in 2002 by the Rossouw brothers and awarded its Fairtrade status in 2004 with the workers now owning 26% of the shares. The Stellar Fairtrade Workers Trust grew from a working committee set up after the Kranskop bridge disaster, a truck accident that killed 53 people in 1987. The trust serves as a forum for workers to identify their needs and manages the income derived from Fairtrade sales. To date, Fairtrade has paid for fencing for workers housing, free housing and electricity and water for permanent farm workers. All schooling and child-care facities are also subsidised.

Although Fairtrade is an honourable and vital organisation, we would still only list the wines if we felt that they stood up in quality and value against "traditionally" produced wines. We are delighted by the response we have already had to the Stellar range and feel very confident in the continued success of this enterprise.

Rust en Vrede was established in 1694 and was bought by the Engelbrecht family in 1977. Renovation and developments in the cellar and vineyards have put this estate among the most prestigious in South Africa. The wines are generally considered more "classic" than New World in style. They only produce red wines with the hallmarks of complexity and balance.

The estate is now run by Jean Engelbrecht and the winemaker is Coenie Snyman. Rust en Vrede was selected by Nelson Mandela to be served at the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize dinner in Oslo.

Meerlust Estate, Stellenbosch

The Meerlust Estate has been part of the Myburgh family for eight generations, dating back to 1756. Long recognised for producing world-class wines, the Meerlust Estate is rich in charm and history. Today the estate is lead by Hannes Myburgh who studied winemaking at Geisenheim in Germany and Chateau Lafite in France. Meerlust is situated 15 kilometres south of Stellenbosch. In the summertime, ocean breezes and evening mists roll in from the coasts to cool the vineyards. The grapes ripen slowly, thus achieving full and concentrated varietal flavours. The 110 hectares are planted mainly with red varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir.

Now celebrating its quarter century, Rubicon was the first Bordeaux blend produced in South Africa and has rightly maintained its iconic status since then. Predominately Cabernet Sauvignon with 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, each variety is fermented separately. After blending, the wine is matured in Nevers oak barriques for 2 years and a further 2 years in bottle before being released on to the market. It will age for between 15 and 25 years.

Bodega Zuccardi is one of Argentina’s oldest, family-owned wineries, in business since Jose’s father, Don Alberto Zuccardi, a civil engineer by trade, planted vines in 1963 and pioneered an irrigation system dedicated to vineyards. Their vineyards are in the dry Mendoza region, an area which receives less than ten inches of rain annually. In his book “Wine Report 2004” by writer Tom Stevenson and a team of regional wine specialists, South American wine expert Michael Fielden ranked Familia Zuccardi in his Top Ten list of Greatest Wine Producers in Chile and Argentina.

Lapostolle

Lapostolle was started in 1994 when Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle discovered the beautiful Apalta vineyards and decided to make the region her home. Alexandre is a member of the Marnier-Lapostolle family who also created the world- renowned liqueur, Grand Marnier.

Her objective is simple yet ambitious; to create a world-class range of wines using French expertise and the superb terroir of Chile. This aim was helped by the discovery after she had purchased her first vineyards of a large number of very old pre-phylloxera vines which had been brought over from France in the 19th century. As a result, these old vines are healthy, ungrafted and of excellent French lineage. A huge investment has also been made in a brand new, temperature- controlled winery.

There are 310 hectares in total and, unusually for Chile, the vines are densely planted, which forces the roots deep and leads to higher quality grapes. Pruning is severe in order to strictly control yields and harvesting is done by hand. From 2009 this estate was certified as being fully organic & biodynamic.
