All of them are world- class winemakers from the Maison Louis Jadot portfolio. And therein lies my newest and final outlook on wine: The common thread from all winemakers – and particularly these three – is the passion...(maybe the passion just seems more obvious in French).

That’s a rare and beautiful thing in the wine business. Those are the type of wineries we PALATE want to support. It used to be that whenever we would come across a situation COLOR that couldn’t be explained, we would ask questions. In the wine business, this happens so often that now we just shake Very Dark our heads.

In this case, it’s a company that we have been doing a lot of business with for over a decade. Most of the wines they sourced NOSE for us became selections because they were outstanding Blueberries, Vanilla values. This wine is one of them, so it was a no-brainer to make it a selection.

The shaking of the head part came when we were told that PALATE the founder of the company was no longer there. The guy Cherry, Earth who made it all happen had a disagreement with his board of directors and poof, gone. Oh well, we’ll go on.

This wine is one of those blends that defies reason and yet FINISH tastes great. As if that wasn’t enough, they aged the wine in used bourbon barrels. PAIRING At that point, they could have told us it was made of Martian Red Meat, Game rocks and aged in truck tires! Backhouse comes from our friends at O’Neill Vintners. The COLOR name refers to the shed at the back of the property - called the Medium Gold “Backhouse” - where the workers gathered to swap stories after an exhausting day of picking grapes.

It has endured probably because of the many stories told in NOSE the “Backhouse” and the feeling that the house has stories of its own to tell. Certainly, the wines that are made here are the Spice and Vanilla best story.

O’Neill owns vineyards all over California, yet that doesn’t stop PALATE them from purchasing grapes from other growers that will enhance what they’re making. Here is another gem from our friends at O’Neill Vintners. COLOR This Chardonnay is from one of the premiere vineyards in Limpid Gold California, Arroyo Seco, located in the heart of the Monterey appellation.

Arroyo Seco translates to “dry riverbed,” which is nothing NOSE short of a perfect place to grow grapes. Millions of years ago, this area was under water. As the river receded, it left tons Green Apple of sea matter, shells and the like in its wake. The nutrients in this matter mixed with the rocky subsurface to create the ideal soil to plant vines. Maldonado is one of those feel-good stories you never get COLOR tired of hearing. In 1970 Lupe Maldonado came to the Napa Very Dark Valley from a small farming community in Mexico. He began working at Sterling Vineyards. He was so good at farming that he began to get offers from all over the valley. One was from Peter Newton, when he was forming Newton Winery, and that NOSE offer was too good to pass up. Ripe Berries, Cassis Lupe became the vineyard manager there and continued for 30 years until his son, Hugo, succeeded him. Lupe didn’t stop there. He bought a 10-acre parcel in Napa and did what he PALATE did best: he planted grapes. He established his own farming Lovely Fruit company and, in 2007, broke ground to build their very own and Earth winery. And, they did it almost entirely by themselves.

The winery’s history goes back to the 1950s, when Lewis Gibbs COLOR Carpenter moved his family from Gilroy, where they had tended Pale Straw cattle and orchards, to Saint Helena. Little did they know then what hallowed ground they had just acquired.

It became obvious a few years later that the land was ideal for NOSE the purpose, so they decided to plant grapes. That decision Fresh Herbs turned out to be fortuitous. A short time later, a group of tasters in France picked Napa Valley wines over their own in a blind tasting - and the rest is not only history, but was also a PALATE harbinger of the future. And what a future it’s become! Rich Stone Fruit, The grapes for this amazing selection came from Gibbs’ Centa Lime Vineyard, which was first planted in 1865. It is located along the Silverado Trail. Great wines are sometimes a lot like real estate: it’s all about COLOR location. Our selection is one of those wines. It’s from the Medium Magenta Bordeaux appellation of Graves, which also houses some of the greatest châteaux known.

Graves is so named because of the main component in the soil: NOSE gravel. No other crop could grow here except grapes. There’s Blackberry, just not enough soil for the roots to get a foothold, which is Blueberry exactly what you don’t want the roots of your wine grapes to do.

PALATE The reason for this is that the longer and stronger the root Very Extracted system is, the healthier the vine system is. Healthy vines produce healthier grapes, so everybody is happy. The soil here forces the roots to dig deeper and deeper to find water. In so FINISH doing, they pick up vitamins and minerals, which they send back up to the vines. And that’s what causes healthier, more Cherry, Firm Tannins complex grapes, from which you can make great, complex wines.

PAIRING Château Guillon has rested in this glorious place for over 300 Red Meat years. In that time, it has produced some of the finest wines Graves has to offer and their winemaker, Marc Maintenat, is making sure that it stays that way.

CELLAR This wine is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. That is Now through 2030 pretty much the usual blend here. Merlot in Bordeaux, though, is very different than Merlot in California. Our selection comes to us from Vignobles Gonfrier. Their story COLOR begins in 1962, when Paul Gonfrier moved to Bordeaux from Very Dark Algeria, where he had been a successful vineyard owner. His first purchase in Bordeaux was Château Marsan, a run-down property that needed a lot of attention. NOSE Gonfrier gave it the attention it deserved and, as his three sons arrived on the scene, each brought their own special talent Plum, Smoke, to the château. As a result, it flourished. First, because it was Cherry situated on excellent soil and, second, because of the talent and dedication of the Gonfrier family. PALATE In 1985, the sons were running the show and made a Dense Black Cherry commitment to slowly increase the family’s holdings by planting just five acres per year, securing a future for the next generation. La Nerthe has one of the most fascinating histories in COLOR France. It is located in the famed region of Châteauneuf- Deep Pink du-Pape. La Nerthe, being probably the oldest estate in the region, PAIRING was the first château to be written about for having Seafood, Fowl, exceptional wines.
