FEBRUARY 2019 THE TASTING ROOM WINES EVALUATED LAST MONTH: 345 • REJECTED: 289 • APPROVED: 51 I Don’t Think It Should Be Simple I have completely changed my mind. I am sorry. And I hope you understand. The idea! I am not sure how many interviews I have from winemakers all over the world, representing a wide range of regional diversi- ty. Yesterday I had the great privilege to interview one of the finest winemakers of Burgundy, France, if not the world. His name is Frédéric Bernier and he heads up the winemaking efforts (actually from farm to bottle) at Maison Louis Jadot. He also has the distinction of following the great Jacques Lardière Each attendee received a tasting log with every wine identified by region and sub-appellation. in this effort and has carved his own name in the halls of Bur- gundian winemaking. For me, I have now shared the stage with Jacques Lardière, Frédéric Bernier and, from the Beaujolais house owned by Maison Louis Jadot, M. Cyril Chirouze. All of them are world- class winemakers from the Maison Louis Jadot portfolio. And therein lies my newest and final outlook on wine: The common thread from all winemakers – and particularly these three – is the passion...(maybe the passion just seems more obvious in French). The red Burgundies were amazing. The 2017 vintage proved Here is my new outlook based on witnessing the passion of a challenging but rewarding. true winemaker: There is no such thing as making wine simple. Meaning, I hear many in the industry say they want to take the intimi- dation factor away from wine, they want to make it easier for people to understand… No, you I started the interview with Frédéric Bernier with a can’t. Why? Because selfie - see it on our YouTube channel. We tasted the Louis Jadot Chablis and the Ferret Santenay. it is by definition an continued on next page >> Paul Kalemkiarian, Owner/Cellarmaster Membership in the Wine of the Month Club is open to anyone with an @WineoftheMonthClub @WineoftheMonth interest in and appreciation for superb wines... and excellent wine values. It requires study to be knowledgeable; it requires courage to learn; it requires focus when learning, and much more. And when you are able to put in this kind of effort, you will reap the benefits of the knowledge because…now you know. It is not to impress your friends, family or associates…it is for you. I set out four years ago to learn French…for nothing more than to keep my brain active… And the by-product has been a level of confidence in myself that I experience each and every time I sit in front of Skype and speak to my teachers…or to M. Berni- er, for that matter. Wine is a study and a rewarding one at that. Last week, I had Emmanuel Kemiji in the office. He is a Master Sommelier and the first MS to own a winery and make wine. We agreed on this fact: Wine is a neverending study that continues to fascinate. His comment during our interview was: “Now I get to learn about Armenian wines. I tasted some last week and they were great!”…a Master Sommelier admitting there is more to learn. Don’t be afraid, and don’t give up. It is worth each and every sip you take to continue to learn the intricacies of wine… Watching my winemaker videos is a great place to start. Flashback A look back at some stellar selections with Ed Masciana June 1975 Selection of California Wine Cabernet Sauvignon, 1972. Clos du Val - $5.97/fifth (757 ml) Bernard Portet came to Napa from Bordeaux in the ‘60s. His father was the cellarmaster at the famous Château Latour. This was his first vintage and Clos du Val went on to become one of the premier wineries in California. April 1976 Selection of California Wine Merlot, 1971. Louis M. Martini $3.50/fifth (757 ml) Way before the now-famous guys were making California Merlot, there was Louis M. Martini. This was one of the first, if not the first, Merlot to be bottled in California. We knew what Merlot was and how important it was in Bordeaux, but we had never tasted one from California before. www.wineofthemonthclub.com • 1.800.949.9463 TWISTED PASO 2015 CABERNET SAUVIGNON 96 points Paso Robles, California 14.3 % Alcohol by Volume “ CAB • burr • NAY SAW • veen • YON ” Lloyd Messer and his daughter, Dana Brown, made it to the COLOR peak of their dreams when they established Calcareous Bright Crimson Vineyards in 2000. That peak was further enhanced by the fact that their vineyards are at the highest point in Paso Robles - over 1,800 feet above sea level. NOSE The same winemaking team that makes Calcareous label wines Bright Red Fruits also makes Twisted Paso. This is to assure that everything they put their name on is worthy of it. That’s a rare and beautiful thing in the wine business. Those are the type of wineries we PALATE want to support. Black Cherry, Plum The grapes for their Twisted Paso label come from two highly respected vineyards in Paso Robles, Javadi and Seashell. Most of the grapes from these two vineyards grace bottles of $40 to FINISH $60 wines. But this father and daughter team have elected to make their great wines more affordable. And we’re glad they Extracted Fruit, did. Soft Tannins Our selection tastes like what it’s supposed to - a great PAIRING expression of Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon and an Red Meat expensive one. The winery is owned by the Caleb family, who Pale Gold purchased it in 2008. The history of the town goes back over 150 years. That was way before Marlborough became known as a New Zealand wine haven. NOSE The terrain of Marlborough is very similar throughout the Flowers and Nectarine region - except for Hillersden. In the wine business, this happens so often that now we just shake Very Dark our heads. In this case, it’s a company that we have been doing a lot of business with for over a decade. Most of the wines they sourced NOSE for us became selections because they were outstanding Blueberries, Vanilla values. This wine is one of them, so it was a no-brainer to make it a selection.
