Dear Participants, in the Frame of the Pan-National Year of Gjergj Dear participants, In the frame of the Pan-National Year of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the 140th anniversary of the Albanian League of Prizren (June 10, 1878) and the 110th anniversary of the Congress of Manastir, the Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo in cooperation with the Bank of Albania organize the exhibition “Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg in Albanian coins and banknotes”. The exhibition is part of the state agenda organized by the Government Commission for the Pan- National Year of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. The cooperation between our two institutions has always been excellent and in order to convey the message of this historic event celebration, this year we decided to join the celebration of the manifestation Pan-National Year of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg that coincides with the 550th anniversary of his death and the 140th anniversary of the Albanian League of Prizren. On this occasion, the Central Bank, in coordination with the Kosovo Museum, the Bank of Albania and the Albanian League of Prizren Museum as host, in this beautiful environment, is opening the exhibition 'Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg', where Albanian coins and banknotes are presented, some of which used in Kosovo during World War II”. The exhibition contains a numismatic treasure from both countries, Kosovo and Albania, mainly coins used in the Albanian territories at different periods, from the 1st century BC to the present days. Exhibited are the coins of the ancient times from the pre-Roman period (V-I BC), the Roman period (I-IV AD) and the medieval period (V-XII). This shows us, that in our lands, since antiquity has been developed a functional financial system, which is evidenced by the coins minted and used during different periods of time in history. In addition to the numismatic treasure, exhibited are various historical texts, historical images and financial education products of both central banks, showing thus a merger of numismatics, history and the education. The exhibition is open from today until the 12 June 2018, so we invite the citizens to visit this excellent exhibition organized for the first time on such important anniversary. .

In the second half of XIX century Albanians began their national revival. The great influence in that process had Frashëri brothers: Abdyl, Naim and Sami. They played a prominent role in Albanian national movement. Their priority was to persuade Ottomans as well as Great Powers that Albanians were a nation, which is why had a right to have an autonomy within Empire. The most important Albanian organization at that time was League of Prizrën – its leaders took part in Congress of Berlin (1878), unfortunately they heard only a lot of objections from European leaders. The culmination of Rilindja was a proclamation of Albania’s independence led by Ismail Qemali in Vlora, on 28 November 1912. IBAC 2012 vol.2 ALBANIAN PERCEPTION OF 1908 REVOLUTION AND ITS EFFECTS ON ALBANIAN NATIONALISM Doç. Dr. Nuray BOZBORA Abstract The Young Turk Revolution of July 1908 marked the return to constitutional government in the Ottoman Empire. The constitutional movement wanted to modernize and democratize the empire with a vision of a democratic multi-national state on the one hand and also to preserve what was left of the Empire on the other. Many diverse groups including some of the different ethnic and religious communities gave their supports to this movement hoping that under a constitutional regime they would gain a grater autonomy /priviliges for their people among whom Albanians were the first group to join the constitutional movement and many of them participated in the Young Turk uprising The Young Turk Revolution in almost all respects failed to fulfill what it promised. The promised democracy and decentralization and also racial-harmony and equality and participation in the state by all ethnic groups were abandoned when Young Turk leaders realized that this compromised security. The authoritarian and centralized nature of the government and its attempt to impose a single identity on everyone led to liberal oppositon of many diverse groups among which the Albanians saw their future as closely linked with a strengthened, more modern Empire . Although very much divided in terms of goals, many intellectual Albanians opposed to the armed struggle that would bring Fearing their end foreign intervention in an era of ethnic Nationalism and irredentist policies of the newly established nation-states in the Balkans. They were involved in an unarmed struggle to achieve cultural autonomy which they perceived as the necessary first step toward the creation of a national sentiment .

  • Greater Albania – the Next Crisis in the Balkans?
School of Social Science Department of Peace and Development Studies Master Thesis Spring 2009 Greater Albania – The Next Crisis in the Balkans? Author: Mimoza Ardolic Tutor: Manuela Knapp ABSTRACT University of Växjö, School of Social Sciences, Department of Peace and Development Studies Master Thesis Title: Greater Albania – The Next Crisis in the Balkans? Author: Mimoza Ardolic Tutor: Manuela Knapp Date: 2009-06-08 The Balkans has suffered from quite a few problems as a result of the countless ambitious endeavors for great states of the ethnic groups residing in the peninsula. The most recent great state idea to have caused troubles in the region is the Serbs’ Great Serbia (i.e. Yugoslvia), which caused a cycle of wars, the latest one being the war in Kosovo in the late 1990s. This thesis attempts to evaluate the rumors of yet another great state in the making – or rather awakening again: the attempt at a Greater Albania, and whether the Albanians in the Balkans are still harboring the idea of any such state. Particular emphasis is placed upon the following questions: Where does the idea of a Greater Albania stem from? Is a Greater Albania today still on the Albanians’ agenda as a real political plan? What speaks for and against a Greater Albania? Is the idea even feasible? The findings indicate that none of the Albanian communities residing in the Balkan region wish for a Greater Albania, nor do their leaders. The Serbs nonetheless maintain that an Albanian threat exists and has done so ever since 1878 when the idea of a Greater Albania first arose.

  • Roots of the Insurgency in Kosovo
No.82 June 1999 Roots of the Insurgency in Kosovo Introduction For Serbians and Albanians alike, Kosovo has deep historical significance. For the Serbs, Kosovo holds the most important treasures of Serbia's medieval religious and political heritage. The defeat of the Serbians by the Ottomans at the Battle ofKosovo Polje in 1389 marked the end of an independent Serbian kingdom and the beginning of four centuries of Ottoman rule, with subsequent privation of Serbians under Islamic rule and the exodus of Serbians fromKosovo. All of these events, within the overarching clash between Christianity and Islam, became powerful themes in Serbian history and sustained a potent ideology to justify Serbian control over Kosovo as a central aspect of Serbian national identity. As Serbs were displaced under Ottoman rule, Kosovo's population became predominantly Albanian. Fighting against foreign intrusion in Albanian life, the Albanians ofKosovo sought to preserve their traditional clan and family organizations and customs. Since the late 19111 century, Albanians inKosovo have sought self-administration, full autonomy and independence, first from Ottoman rule and later from resurgent Serbian dominance. Many of the salient political and military events related to Albania's struggle for national independence occurred inKosovo, whose history therefore has a particular importance for all Albanians. Kosovo's military-politico history and its most recent crisis underscore the tenacious hold of the past on Serbia and Kosovo's Albanians. This brief history ofKosovo highlights recurring themes in the conflict between Serbs and Albanians since the nineteenth century that contribute to the dynamics of the present insurgency in Kosovo.

  • Albania's Course Toward Statehood
ALBANIA’S COURSE TOWARD STATEHOOD A CASE OF INTERACTION BETWEEN GREAT POWER’ POLICIES, THE OTTOMAN AND BALKAN POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT AND ALBANIAN CULTURAL AND BIOLOGICAL NATIONALISM A REVIEW ARTICLE The Albanian National Awakening 1878-1912, by Stavro Skendi, Princeton N. J., Princeton University Press, 1967, 498 pp. This book deals essentially with the emergence of the Albanians’ aware ness of their ethnic character in the multinational Ottoman empire during the thirty-four years that preceded the establishment of Albania as an indepen dent and sovereign nation-state in 1912. Thus, within the broader historical context, this bulky and laborious volume constitutes a small though far from uninteresting chapter in the long story of the gradual disintegration of the Ottoman empire and, more specificallY of the breakup of its European terri tories into several nation-states, with Albania being the last to achieve that status, in the face of increasinglY strenuous Ottoman efforts since the nine teenth century to fight the centrifugal tendencies becoming manifest in its territories elsewhere too, in Egypt, for example. Although lacking in many respects in internal continuity, in spite of its broad chronological outline, partly perhaps because some of its chapters are based on separate articles Mr. Skendi published between 1953 and 1960; re vealing, too, a certain weakness in organization because of the seeming absence of any unifying esthetic form or of an underlying conceptual framework; although lacking a map that would show the territorial extent of the Albanians’ habitat and of their territorial aspirations as compared to the territorial extent of Albania as an independent state; and, finally, suffering from rather poor editing, several typographical errors, and imperfect indexing, ultimate respon sibility for which lies mainlY with the publishers, this study, nevertheless, is an important contribution to Balkan history, making use of unpublished documents from Austrian, French, British, and Italian state archives, though 30 Stephen G.

It brings out clearly the clash between the diabolical plans, attempts, manoeuvres and concrete activities of Anglo-American imperialism to put Albania under its sway, on the one hand, and the vigilance, the blow for blow struggle of the Communist Party of Albania and its General Secretary, the leader of the Army and the National Liberation Front and the whole patriotic Alba• nian people, Comrade Enver Hoxha, on the other hand, to discover, unmask, defeat and destroy the imperialist strategy and tactics in regard to Albania. It pursues three major objectives. Firstly, it argues that during the period under discussion (1876-1914) Britain had only a limited involvement in the Albanian Question because of a lack of any major interest in Albania.
