David Gulpilil, AM Born 1953, Gulparil, near Ramingining, Northern Territory. Lives Darwin, N.T. David Gulpilil’s full name is David Gulpilil Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu. Gulpilil is also spelt Gulparil, which is the name of his Country near Ramingining, central Arnhem Land, N.T. When, as a seventeen year-old, David Gulpilil lit up the cinema screen in the film, Walkabout, he did more than play a role. The performance was so strong, so imbued with a new type of graceful naturalism, that it re-defined perceptions of Aboriginality, especially in the field of screen acting. Over the next decade, David became the iconic Aboriginal actor of his generation, paving the way in the resurgence of the Australian film industry for more parts to be written for Aboriginal people, for more Aboriginal stories to be told. His charismatic, engaging and unforgettable performances in films like Storm Boy (1976, dir. Henri Safran), The Last Wave (1977, dir. Peter Weir) and Crocodile Dundee (1986, dir. Peter Faiman) helped bring Aboriginality into the mainstream of the screen arts. In his later work, including Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002, dir. Philip Noyce), The Tracker (2002, dir. Rolf de Heer), Australia (2008, dir. Baz Luhrmann) and the soon to be released Charlie's Country (2013, dir. Rolf de Heer), Gulpilil has brought tremendous dignity to the depiction of what it is to be Aboriginal. Through his art he has brought an incalculable amount of self-esteem to his community. Since the early 1970s, Gulpilil has earned more than 30 film credits, and performed alongside Dennis Hopper, Jack Thompson, Miles Davis, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Kenneth Branagh, William Hurt, Richard Chamberlain, Guy Pearce, Paul Hogan, and Ernie Dingo, under acclaimed directors such as Peter Weir, Baz Lurhman, Philip Noyce, Wim Wenders and Rolf de Heer.

SYNOPSIS Northern Territory, Australia 1919. The Great War is over, the men have returned home. Many return to their normal lives in the cities in the south, others are drawn to the vast open spaces of the North. A sparsely populated wild frontier. They hunt buffalo, they hunt crocodile, and those that can join the overstretched Police service. Travis and Ambrose are two such men. A former sniper, Travis has seen the very worst of humanity and the only thing that keeps him on track is his code of honour, tested to its limit when a botched police operation results in the massacre of an Indigenous tribe. Travis saves a terrified young boy named Gutjuk from the massacre. He takes him to the safety of a Christian mission but unable to deal with the ensuing cover up, Travis leaves his police outpost and disappears into the bush. Twelve years later, 18-year-old Gutjuk hears news of the ‘wild mob’ – a renegade group of Indigenous warriors causing havoc along the frontier attacking and burning cattle stations, killing settlers. It’s said their leader is Gutjuk’s uncle, Baywara thought to be a survivor of the massacre.

The worst scandals on the British side concerned colonial irregulars - Australians, Canadians and South Africans - whose official contingents, onicallyir , had won a reputation for gallantry in so many set-piece battles. The most notorious case involved a special anti-commando unit, raised by Australians to fight in the wild northern Transvaal, and called the Bush Veldt Carbineers. Six of its officers (five Australians, one Englishman) were court-martialled for multiple murder. The facts were admitted: in August 1901, 12 Boers, earlier taken prisoner, had been shot by the Carbineers on the orders of their officers. Theustr A alians' defence: as a reprisal, shooting prisoners was now accepted practice. Two of the Australian officers, Lieutenants 'Breaker' Morant and Handcock, were executed in February 1902, on the orders of Kitchener. The affair caused an outcry in Australia. There arose a misconception (still current) that foreign political pressures had induced Kitchener to make scapegoats of Morant and Handcock.

David Stratton’s STORIES OF AUSTRALIAN CINEMA **David Stratton: A Cinematic Life (a feature version of this series) has been selected to screen at the 70th Cannes Film Festival which opens May 17. “When I started championing Australian cinema at the Sydney Film Festival I couldn’t have imagined the richness of movies that would follow,” says David. “These are the stories of the films that changed the way the world saw us and how we saw ourselves … a story of how the films and those who made them broke through the status quo.” Revered critic David Stratton tells the glorious story of Australian cinema, focusing in on the films that capture the nation’s true nature with candour, emotion and humour. David is superbly qualified for this task. While he adapted to a new country and turned his passion for cinema into a profession as a film festival director and film critic, a growing band of courageous Australians turned their enthusiasm for storytelling into an extraordinary body of work. “A nation found its identity through cinema and so did I; this is my journey through the movies that made our nation,” he says. Those movies are wildly diverse but strong themes echo throughout the body of work. Screen Australia, The Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Screen NSW in association with the Adelaide Film Festival present A Stranger Than Fiction Production Episode one: Game Changers (June 6) Filmmakers gained confidence with: the boldness of Picnic at Hanging Rock and Mad Max; the global success of Crocodile Dundee and Shine; the flamboyance of Strictly Ballroom; the substance and style of Samson & Delilah.
