Media Release For immediate release Bryan Brown to receive Australia’s highest screen accolade Today, the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) announced that one of Australia’s most admired and respected actors, Bryan Brown, will be honoured with the Australian Academy’s most prestigious award – the Longford Lyell Award. The Award will be presented to Bryan at the 2018 AACTA Awards Ceremony presented by Foxtel on Wednesday 5 December at The Star Event Centre in Sydney, telecast at 8:30pm on Channel 7. Tickets are now on sale from www.aacta.org/whats-on. First presented in 1968, the Longford Lyell Award honours Australian film pioneer Raymond Longford and his partner in filmmaking and life, Lottie Lyell. The Award is the highest honour that the Australian Academy can bestow upon an individual and recognises a person who has made a truly outstanding contribution to the enrichment of Australia’s screen environment and culture. “It's an honour - thank you to the Academy,” said Bryan Brown. “I'm an Australian telling Australian stories and I love it.” Brown first debuted on screen in 1975 as a policeman in SCOBIE MALONE, delivering just two lines. He went on to cut his teeth with some of Australia’s leading directors, with supporting roles throughout 1978 in films such as Fred Schepisi’s THE CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH, Bruce Beresford’s MONEY MOVERS and Phillip Noyce’s NEWSFRONT, before taking on leading roles in Donald Crombie’s CATHY’S CHILD (1979) and Albie Thoms’ PALM BEACH (1980). In 1980, Brown received his first AFI Award nominations, becoming the first male actor to be nominated for both Best Lead and Best Supporting Actor in the same year. -

David Gulpilil, AM Born 1953, Gulparil, near Ramingining, Northern Territory. Lives Darwin, N.T. David Gulpilil’s full name is David Gulpilil Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu. Gulpilil is also spelt Gulparil, which is the name of his Country near Ramingining, central Arnhem Land, N.T. When, as a seventeen year-old, David Gulpilil lit up the cinema screen in the film, Walkabout, he did more than play a role. The performance was so strong, so imbued with a new type of graceful naturalism, that it re-defined perceptions of Aboriginality, especially in the field of screen acting. Over the next decade, David became the iconic Aboriginal actor of his generation, paving the way in the resurgence of the Australian film industry for more parts to be written for Aboriginal people, for more Aboriginal stories to be told. His charismatic, engaging and unforgettable performances in films like Storm Boy (1976, dir. Henri Safran), The Last Wave (1977, dir. Peter Weir) and Crocodile Dundee (1986, dir. Peter Faiman) helped bring Aboriginality into the mainstream of the screen arts. In his later work, including Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002, dir. Philip Noyce), The Tracker (2002, dir. Rolf de Heer), Australia (2008, dir. Baz Luhrmann) and the soon to be released Charlie's Country (2013, dir. Rolf de Heer), Gulpilil has brought tremendous dignity to the depiction of what it is to be Aboriginal. Through his art he has brought an incalculable amount of self-esteem to his community. Since the early 1970s, Gulpilil has earned more than 30 film credits, and performed alongside Dennis Hopper, Jack Thompson, Miles Davis, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Kenneth Branagh, William Hurt, Richard Chamberlain, Guy Pearce, Paul Hogan, and Ernie Dingo, under acclaimed directors such as Peter Weir, Baz Lurhman, Philip Noyce, Wim Wenders and Rolf de Heer. -

He managed the transition to ‘glossy’ with flair and panache. As historian of the College and sometime holder of many of its working offices, he also brought a knowledge of its past and an understanding of its mysteries that I am unable to match. -

C'est le dernier plan image pour bien des malfrats et assassins, personnages principaux des films policiers et thrillers : une forme de « happy end » pour la société, puisque justice est faite. A l'issue d'une longue enquête ou d'une traque, l'assassin est enfin trouvé et sanctionné. (Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, Deux hommes dans la ville, Nous sommes tous des assassins) C'est l'intrigue pour un grand nombre de films de suspense, dans laquelle l'enquête est portée par un personnage principal « justicier ». Le plus souvent avocat ou journaliste, il se démène pour rétablir la justice, et en conséquence sauver la vie d'une personne injustement condamnée. (Juste cause, Je veux vivre, l'invraisemblable vérité, Meurtre à Alcatraz, Made in the USA) C'est un trouble que diffusent les films aux ressorts psychologiques complexes, où domine le sentiment d'incompréhension face à des actes qu'aucune logique ne vient expliquer. Des personnages à la frontière de la désociabilisation, de la folie. (The barber l'homme qui n'était pas là, Tu ne tueras point, De sang-froid) Militant de son époque, et surtout aux Etats-unis, le cinéma dénonce la discrimination dans l'énoncé de la justice, qu'elle soit raciale (Un coupable idéal, Amistad) ou sociale (le couloir de la mort, Dancer in the dark), ainsi que les affaires politiques (Sacco & Vanzetti, toute ma vie en prison). Il avertit également les Occidentaux du danger d'être impliqué dans une affaire de drogue (Bangkok aller simple, Force majeure, Trop jeune pour mourir). -

When Aboriginal stockman Sam (Hamilton Morris) kills white station owner Harry March (Ewen Leslie) in self- defence, Sam and his wife Lizzie (Natassia Gorey-Furber) go on the run. They are pursued across the outback, through glorious but harsh desert country. Sergeant Fletcher (Bryan Brown) leads the posse with the help of Aboriginal tracker Archie (Gibson John) and local landowners Fred Smith (Sam Neill) and Mick Kennedy (Thomas M. Wright). Fletcher is desperate to capture Sam and put him on trial for murder – but Sam is an expert bushman and he has little difficulty outlasting them. Eventually, for the health of his pregnant wife, Sam decides to give himself up. -

What brings people to give voice to a story at a particular historical moment? … and as the historical moment shifts, what stories may lose their significance and what stories may gain in tellability? (Plummer 25). The vantage points from which we customarily view the world are, as William James puts it, ‘fringed forever by a more’ that outstrips and outruns them (Jackson 23-24). Poetry from the future interrupts the habitual formation of bodies, and it is an index of a time to come in which what today exists potently—even if not (yet) effectively— but escapes us will find its time. (Keeling, ‘Looking for M—’ 567) 1 The first time I saw Baz Luhrmann’s Australia I laughed till I cried. To be exact, I cried laughing at dinner after watching the film with a group of old friends at an inner suburban cinema in Sydney. During the screening itself I laughed and I cried. As so often in the movies, our laughter was public and my tears were private, left to dry on my face lest the dabbing of a tissue or an audible gulp should give my emotion away. The theatre was packed that night with a raucously critical audience groaning at the dialogue, hooting at moments of high melodrama (especially Jack Thompson’s convulsive death by stampeding cattle) and cracking jokes at travesties of history perceived on screen. -

A former sniper, Travis has seen the very worst of humanity and the only thing that keeps him on track is his code of honour, tested to its limit when a botched police operation results in the massacre of an Indigenous tribe. Travis saves a terrified young boy named Gutjuk from the massacre. He takes him to the safety of a Christian mission but unable to deal with the ensuing cover up, Travis leaves his police outpost and disappears into the bush. Twelve years later, 18-year-old Gutjuk hears news of the ‘wild mob’ – a renegade group of Indigenous warriors causing havoc along the frontier attacking and burning cattle stations, killing settlers. It’s said their leader is Gutjuk’s uncle, Baywara thought to be a survivor of the massacre. -
