LEVEY INTRODUCTION The family Buprestidae is a large one, containing over 15,000 described species. It is best represented in tropical and subtropical areas, both in numbers of species and individuals, but is almost world-wide in distribution and a few species are found north of the Arctic Circle. In Britain there are only 12 indigenous species, none of which is reliably recorded from Ireland.

PREFACE In attempting to teach courses dealing with various phases of entomology over a period of 30 years, there has been an increasing tendency to separate course work into more and more restricted fields. Much of the material presented herewith is given by various instructors in connection with courses in historical entomology, taxonomy, etc., and, in such courses, it is usually treate d only briefly and in an incidental manner. Nomenclature is of sufficient importance that it should be treated directly and with con s iderable emphasis. Its importance, development and historical background should be understood by every student in entomology. Literature is, of course, the basis from which all present-day workers get their inspira tion, and the literature in the field of entomology is so extensive that one must handle it in a systematic manner. It has been the hope of the writer that, by pointing out those works where bibliographies are obtainable, the task of obtaining information on any given phase of entomology would be made an easier one. When late works are available which contain extensive bibliographies, such as Wiggles worth, Principles of Insect Physiology, or Snodgrass, Principles of Insect Morphology, the student is referred to those works, and from the bibliographies he will be able to select those applicable to the problem at hand.

Abstract Species richness (SR) is a tool that managers can use to include diversity in planning and decision-making and is a convenient and useful way to characterize the first level of biological diversity. A richness list derived from existing inventories enhances a manager’s understanding of the complexity of the plant and animal communities they manage. Without a list of species, resource management decisions may have negative or unknown effects on all species occupying a forest type. Without abundance data, a common quantitative index for species diversity cannot be determined. However, SR data can include life his- tory information from published literature to enhance the SR value. This report provides an example of how inventory information can characterize the complexity of biological diversity in the ponderosa pine forest type in Arizona. The SR process broadly categorizes the number of plant and animal life forms to arrive at a composite species richness value. Common sense dictates that plants and animals exist in a biotic community because that community has sufficient resources to sustain life.

												  Download Alien Species in NorwayAlien species in Norway – with the Norwegian Black List 2012 Alien species in Norway – with the Norwegian Black List 2012 presents an overview of ecological impact assessments of alien species which reproduce in Norwegian territories. The assessments are based upon a new and semi- quantitative set of criteria, where the species’ invasion potential and ecological effect are considered. The work has been carried out by 11 groups of experts who have treated ca. 2500 species. Impact assessments have been made for 1180 alien species which reproduce in Norwegian territories and for 134 species which might arrive in Norway with the aid of humans in the future – so called ‘door knockers’. A total of 106 species are categorised as having a severe impact, 111 species as having a high impact, 198 species as having a potentially high impact, 399 species as having a low impact, and 366 species as having no known impact in Norwegian nature. In addition, species inform- ation has been gathered for 1071 alien species which do not reproduce on the Norwegian mainland and territorial waters, and 69 non-reproducing alien species observed in Svalbard.
