Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity. -

Spring/early summer is here and the 2016 growing season is well underway. The predictable unpredictability of the weather has brought the typical challenges that we face on an annual basis. Hopefully the majority of you are untouched or unaffected by the quirky weather that has been observed. Hopefully you’ve gotten some of the rain that has fallen across the Prairies. To combat or counteract the unpredictability of the weather, welcome to another ever-so-predictable edition of Hort Snacks. The content isn’t always predictable, but the arrival of it is. In this edition, you’ll notice a theme. And that theme is largely creepy/crawly. The season of insect wildlife is upon us, and to prepare you (and perhaps some of your customers) for identifying and dealing with some of those pests, you’ll find some caterpillar-related resources. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t more things out there, but this is a start. Otherwise, please take a moment to look at the various bits and pieces that might be of interest to you. The paper presents the research on Lepidoptera in Cysterskie Kompozycje Krajobrazowe Rud Wielkich Landscape Park between 1982 and 2019. The material was collected at nine selected sites, mainly in various forest environments. Overall, 1162 species in 66 families were recorded and listed, including 26 species new to the Province of Silesia. WSTĘP Park Krajobrazowy Cysterskie Kompozycje Krajobrazowe Rud Wielkich (PK CKKRW) położony jest w południowo-zachodniej części województwa śląskiego i zajmuje wschodnią część Kotliny Raciborskiej oraz północne fragmenty Płaskowyżu Rybnickiego. Powstał na mocy Rozporządzenia Wojewody Katowickiego Nr 181/93 z dnia 23 listopada 1993 roku. Powierzchnia Parku wynosi 493,87 km², a strefa ochronna to obszar 140,10 km². Dominują tu drzewostany sosnowe, rosnące na siedliskach borowych, wykształconych na glebach bielicowych, a także wprowadzone sztucznie na siedliska żyznych lasów liściastych. Najbogatszym przyrodniczo terenem w obrębie Parku jest kompleks leśno-stawowy Łężczok w okolicach Raciborza, będący jedynym rezerwatem w granicach Parku. Multiple-funnel traps baited with (j)-a-pinene (released at about 2 g/d at 25–28-C) were attractive to the following Cerambycidae: Acanthocinus nodosus, A. obsoletus, Arhopalus rusticus nubilus, Asemum striatum, Monochamus titillator, Prionus pocularis, Xylotrechus integer, and X. sagittatus sagittatus. Buprestis lineata (Buprestidae), Alaus myops (Elateridae), and Hylobius pales and Pachylobius picivorus (Curculionidae) were also attracted to traps baited with (j)-a-pinene. In many locations, ethanol synergized attraction of the cerambycids Acanthocinus nodosus, A. obsoletus, Arhopalus r. nubilus, Monochamus titillator, and Xylotrechus s. sagittatus (but not Asemum striatum, Prionus pocularis,orXylotrechus integer)to traps baited with (j)-a-pinene. Similarly, attraction of Alaus myops, Hylobius pales, and Pachylobius picivorus (but not Buprestis lineata) to traps baited with (j)-a- pinene was synergized by ethanol. These results provide support for the use of traps baited with ethanol and (j)-a-pinene to detect and monitor common large wood- boring beetles from the southeastern region of the USA at ports-of-entry in other countries, as well as forested areas in the USA. Serious or significant pests require strategic-level plans developed at a national level describing the overall aim and high-level objectives to be achieved, and setting out the response strategy for eradicating or containing outbreaks. 2. The UK Plant Health Risk Group (PHRG) has commissioned, following identification by the UK Plant Health Risk Register, pest-specific contingency plans for those pests which pose the greatest risk and require stakeholder consultation. 3. The purpose of these pest-specific contingency plans is to ensure a rapid and effective response to outbreaks of the pests or diseases described. They are designed to help government agencies anticipate, assess, prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from pest and disease outbreaks. 4. Contingency planning starts with the anticipation and assessment of potential threats, includes preparation and response, and finishes with recovery. Anticipate 5. Gathering information and intelligence about the pest, including surveillance and horizon scanning. Assess 6. Identifying concerns and preparing plans. 7. Campylopoda was previously considered to include entities treated at the rank of species: A. abietinum, A. apachecum, A. blumeri, A. californicum, A. campylopodum , A. cyanocarpum, A. laricis, A. littorum, A. microcarpum, A. monticola , A. occidentale , A. siskiyouense , and A. tsugense . Morphology, host associations, levels of sympatry and genetic evidence are reviewed here and, in contrast, it is concluded that these taxa are best viewed as ecotypes of a single variable species. Formal nomenclature treating these taxa at the rank of subspecies is presented, following previous conventions for recognizing infraspecific taxa in dwarf mistletoes. KEY WORDS : Arceuthobium campylopodum , dwarf mistletoe, ecotype, subspecies, Viscaceae Arceuthobium (dwarf mistletoes, Viscaceae) has been of great interest to American plant morphologists, pathologists, and systematists since the late 1800s. This is the only genus in Viscaceae that naturally occurs in both the Old and New World. In contrast to most viscaceous mistletoes such as Viscum and Phoradendron , Arceuthobium is morphologically reduced with scale leaves (squamate habit) and small monochlamydeous flowers whose morphology varies little between species. The explosively dehiscent fruits are unique in the family and allow population expansion without requiring bird vectors. The adult shoots produce only a small amount of carbohydrate through photosynthesis, thus these mistletoes approach the holoparasitic condition (Nickrent & García 2009).
