The Alien Vascular Flora of Tuscany (Italy)
Quad. Mus. St. Nat. Livorno, 26: 43-78 (2015-2016) 43 The alien vascular fora of Tuscany (Italy): update and analysis VaLerio LaZZeri1 SUMMARY. Here it is provided the updated checklist of the alien vascular fora of Tuscany. Together with those taxa that are considered alien to the Tuscan vascular fora amounting to 510 units, also locally alien taxa and doubtfully aliens are reported in three additional checklists. The analysis of invasiveness shows that 241 taxa are casual, 219 naturalized and 50 invasive. Moreover, 13 taxa are new for the vascular fora of Tuscany, of which one is also new for the Euromediterranean area and two are new for the Mediterranean basin. Keywords: Vascular plants, Xenophytes, New records, Invasive species, Mediterranean. Introduction establishment of long-lasting economic exchan- ges between close or distant countries. As a result The Mediterranean basin is considered as one of this context, non-native plant species have of the world most biodiverse areas, especially become an important component of the various as far as its vascular fora is concerned. -

Duplications and Expression of DIVARICATA-Like Genes in Dipsacales
Duplications and Expression of DIVARICATA-Like Genes in Dipsacales Dianella G. Howarth* and Michael J. Donoghue *Department of Biological Sciences, St. John’s University, Queens, NY; and Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Yale University, New Haven, CT The genetics underlying flower symmetry shifts between radial and bilateral symmetry has been intensively studied in the model Antirrhinum majus. Understanding the conservation or diversification of this genetic pathway in other plants is of special interest in understanding angiosperm evolution and ecology. Evidence from Antirrhinum indicates that TCP and MYB transcription factors, especially CYCLOIDEA (CYC), DICHOTOMA (DICH), DIVARICATA (DIV), and RADIALIS (RAD) play a role in specifying dorsal identity (CYC, DICH, and RAD) and ventral identity (DIV) in the corolla and androecium of monosymmetric (bilateral) flowers. Previous data indicate that the ECE clade of TCP genes (including CYC and DICH) underwent two duplication events around the diversification of the core eudicots. In this study, we examined the duplication events within Dipsacales, which contains both radially and bilaterally symmetrical flowered species. Additionally, we report here the phylogenetic relationships of the DIV-like genes across core eudicots. Like TCP genes, we found three core eudicot clades of DIV-like genes, with duplications occurring around the diversification of the core eudicots, which we name DIV1, DIV2, and DIV3. The Antirrhinum genes, DIVARICATA and its sister DVL1, fall into the DIV1 clade. We also found additional duplications within these clades in Dipsacales. Specifically, the Caprifoliaceae (bilaterally symmetrical clade) duplicated independently in each of the three core eudicot DIV clades. Downloaded from Using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR), we showed that most of these copies are expressed across floral tissues in the Dipsacales species Heptacodium miconioides. -
Environmental Conservation and Protected Areas in Palestine Challenges and Opportunities
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION AND PROTECTED AREAS IN PALESTINE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES Report submitted to The Hanns Seidel Foundation 2 Foreword This publication bases on the report “Environmental conservation and protected areas in Palestine: Challenges and Opportunities” by Dr. Mazin Qumsieh, Betlehem University and Dr. Zuhair Amr, Jordan University of Science and Technology, which have been contracted by Hanns Seidel Foundation for this task. The report has been written in the framework of a project funded by the European Union’s Partnership for Peace initiative. The aim of the report is to portray the current state of nature protection in Palestine, to fathom the potential for improved environmental conservation and nature reserve management, and to suggest priorities for future environmental protection efforts. The current version is the result of an intense review process, which involved Palestinian Experts, the Environment Quality Authority as well as the team of Hanns Seidel Foundation. In addition to that, it has been edited to improve the reading. Hence, the original report written by the contracted authors has been considerably altered and shortened. Such a review always requires compromises between the original text and all the studied opinions. Often, such a compromise will not entirely please neither the authors, nor the reviewers and the contracting party. Nevertheless, we have carried out a lot of effort to harmonize all positions and to include the very many recommendations and comments, while keeping to the original. All mistakes and inaccuracies, naturally, can be entirely attributed to the contracting authority, which is the Hanns Seidel Foundation. Our foundation would like to thank the authors of the report and all other contributors for their insight and effort. -

The Lily Leaf Beetles Lilioceris in Israel (Chrysomelidae)
ISRAEL JOURNAL OF ENTOMOLOGY, Vol. 50 (2), pp. 39–45 (18 August 2020) This contribution is published to honor Prof. Vladimir Chikatunov, a scientist, a colleague and a friend, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Notes on the lily leaf beetles Lilioceris Reitter in Israel (Chrysomelidae: Criocerinae) Atai Yoffe1 & Ariel-Leib-Leonid Friedman2 1Atai’s Garden, Netiv haLamed He, Israel 2The Steinhardt Museum of Natural History, Israel National Center for Biodiversity Studies, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv 69978, Israel. E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Lilioceris faldermanni and L. lillii lillii are recorded from Israel and keyed, their distribution is corrected and summarized. The biology of L. faldermanni on Fritillaria persica and Lilium candidum is described. KEYWORDS: Chrysomelidae, Lilioceris, Liliaceae, biology, leaf beetles, lily beetle, taxonomy, identification key, Palaearctic, zoogeography. INTRODUCTION The genus Lilioceris Reitter, 1913 comprises about 170 extant species in the Pa- laearctic, Oriental, Afrotropical and Australasian regions (Monrós 1960; Bukejs & Schmitt 2016); one species (L. lilii) invaded North America (Brown 1946; Lesage 1983; Ernst 2005). Lilioceris includes 65 extant species throughout the Palaearctic Region, with only seven extant and one fossil species in the West Palaearctic (Europe, West Asia and North Africa) (Bezděk & Schmitt 2017). All species, whose biology is known, are associated with monocots (Asparagaceae, Dioscoreaceae, Liliaceae) (Lesage 1983; Cox 2001; Salisbury 2003; Haye & Kenis 2004; Ernst 2005; Konstantinov et al. 2011; Pankow & Schmitt 2017). In the recent years, additional information has been published on the biology of Lilioceris in the Eastern Mediterranean: Greece (Papadoulis & Tsagkarakis 2012) and Iran (Mojib Hagh Ghadam et al. -
