Morpho- logical observations and phylogenetic analysis of combined LSU and ITS sequences revealed that the new taxon is a member of the genus Translucidithyrium and it is distinct from other species. Therefore, Translucidithyrium chinense sp. nov. is introduced here. The Maximum Clade Credibility (MCC) tree from LSU rDNA of Translucidithyrium and related species indicated the divergence time of existing and new species of Translucidithyrium was crown age at 16 (4–33) Mya. Combining the estimated diver- gence time, paleoecology and plate tectonic movements with the corresponding geological time scale, we proposed a hypothesis that the speciation (estimated divergence time) of T. -

Pfister Danny Haelewaters STUDIES OF THE LABOULBENIOMYCETES: DIVERSITY, EVOLUTION, AND PATTERNS OF SPECIATION ABSTRACT CHAPTER 1: Laboulbeniales is one of the most morphologically and ecologically distinct orders of Ascomycota. These microscopic fungi are characterized by an ectoparasitic lifestyle on arthropods, determinate growth, lack of asexual state, high species richness and intractability to culture. DNA extraction and PCR amplification have proven difficult for multiple reasons. DNA isolation techniques and commercially available kits are tested enabling efficient and rapid genetic analysis of Laboulbeniales fungi. Success rates for the different techniques on different taxa are presented and discussed in the light of difficulties with micromanipulation, preservation techniques and negative results. CHAPTER 2: The class Laboulbeniomycetes comprises biotrophic parasites associated with arthropods and fungi. -

The Phylogeny of Plant and Animal Pathogens in the Ascomycota

BERBEE* Department of Botany, University of British Columbia, 6270 University Blvd, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z4, Canada (Accepted for publication August 2001) What makes a fungus pathogenic? In this review, phylogenetic inference is used to speculate on the evolution of plant and animal pathogens in the fungal Phylum Ascomycota. A phylogeny is presented using 297 18S ribosomal DNA sequences from GenBank and it is shown that most known plant pathogens are concentrated in four classes in the Ascomycota. Animal pathogens are also concentrated, but in two ascomycete classes that contain few, if any, plant pathogens. Rather than appearing as a constant character of a class, the ability to cause disease in plants and animals was gained and lost repeatedly. The genes that code for some traits involved in pathogenicity or virulence have been cloned and characterized, and so the evolutionary relationships of a few of the genes for enzymes and toxins known to play roles in diseases were explored. In general, these genes are too narrowly distributed and too recent in origin to explain the broad patterns of origin of pathogens. Co-evolution could potentially be part of an explanation for phylogenetic patterns of pathogenesis. Robust phylogenies not only of the fungi, but also of host plants and animals are becoming available, allowing for critical analysis of the nature of co-evolutionary warfare. Host animals, particularly human hosts have had little obvious eect on fungal evolution and most cases of fungal disease in humans appear to represent an evolutionary dead end for the fungus. -

Monthly Meeting Program : October I am very pleased to have convinced Ms. Petra Crist to speak at our Meeting. She is a well-known and respected enthusiast within our hobby. Petra is sensitive about her noticeable German accent, and expressed a little concern that our members will have difficulty understanding her. I find it endearing when I have spoken with her. Her presentation subject will be “How to Develop and Build a Nursery”. Petra operates a remarkable one, and her story of how it came to be will be the subject of her presentation. I was a dressage rider and heavily involved in dressage circles in Germany and beyond. That, besides my job as a lab tech in Pathology, kept me quite busy. -

Citations for original descriptions, types, synonyms, teleomorphs (if known), references of important redescriptions in literature, illustrations as well as notes are given. This list contains data of 772 taxa, i.e., valid, invalid and illegitime species, varieties and formae as well as herbarium names. Zusammenfassung: DUGAN , F.M., SCHUBERT , K. & BRAUN ; U. (2004): Checkliste der Cladosporium -Namen. Schlechtendalia 11 : 1–119. Namen von Arten und subspezifischen Taxa der Hyphomycetengattung Cladosporium werden aufgelistet. Introduction: Cladosporium Link (LINK 1816) is one of the largest genera of hyphomycetes, comprising more than 772 names, but also one of the most heterogeneous ones, which is not very surprising since all early circumscriptions and delimitations from similar genera were rather vague and imprecise (FRIES 1832, 1849; SACCARDO 1886; LINDAU 1907, etc.). All kinds of superficially similar cladosporioid fungi, i.e., amero- to phragmosporous dematiaceous hyphomycetes with conidia formed in acropetal chains, were assigned to Cladosporium s. lat., ranging from saprobes to plant pathogens as well as human-pathogenic taxa. DE VRIES (1952) and ELLIS (1971, 1976) maintained broad concepts of Cladosporium . ARX (1983), MORGAN - JONES & JACOBSEN (1988), MCKEMY & MORGAN -JONES (1990), MORGAN -JONES & MCKEMY (1990) and DAVID (1997) discussed the heterogeneity of Cladosporium and contributed towards a more natural circumscription of this genus. -
