ADDENDUM TO THE RECOMMENDATIONS

INTRODUCTION

M/s. Spreads Foundation, G-171, Nr. Shopping Complex, Panampilly Nagar, Cochin- 36 had conducted the site investigation for the proposed apartment building (G+3) at Kalathipady, Kottayam for M/s Life Mission, Kerala. Five boreholes were taken up to a maximum depth of 5.4 m using rotary drilling. Standard Penetration Tests were conducted at regular vertical intervals and the samples, taken during the investigation were tested in the laboratory and report dated 26/01/2019 was submitted. These recommendations are given against the request to consider the possibility of providing same SBC & depth of foundation.

DATA AND DISCUSSIONS

The column loads of the proposed structure is varying from 30 tonnes to 75 tonnes.

Soil profiles in the boreholes show variations. Top laterite layer has good shear strength in BH-1 to BH-4 locations. In BH-5 location, top lateritic sand layer has reasonable shear strength up to 1.6 m depth. In BH-3 and BH-4 locations, lateritic soils show lesser shear strength around 3.0 m depth and 2.0 m depth, respectively. So shallow foundation can be provided. Since the foundation is to be rested on same depth, the worst soil condition is considered for the recommendation.

RECOMMENDATIONS

i) It is recommended to provide isolated column footing resting at a depth of around 1.5 m on laterite layer to support vertical column loads. A safe bearing capacity of 160 kN/m2 can be assumed for a foundation size of 2.0 m x 2.0 m.

ii) Factor of safety of 2.5 bearing is taken for the design.

iii) The sub structure should be constructed as per latest IS code and it should be certified by a qualified engineer.

iv) These recommendations are based on five borehole data obtained. If any variation in the soil profile is observed during the construction, it should be referred to a Geotechnical Engineer.

BEARING CAPACITY CALCULATION

Isolated column footing resting on soft rocklayer

Depth = 2.0 m, 3.0 m, 5.4 m, 5.3 m and 1.6 m in BH-1, BH-2, BH-3, BH-4 and BH-5 locations,respectively. In BH-3 & BH-4 layer SPT rebounded. Other locations, soft rock observed.

As per IS.12070 table 2, the following SBC value can be assumed as 1000 kN/m2. Based on table considering settlement, SBC can be taken as 500 kN/m2

Calculations are as per IS.6403 and from the interpretations of the test results. Details attached below. A factor of safety of 2.5 is taken for arriving SBC. The following equations were used for calculation of SBC.

Worst condition is at BH-IV location. In BH-IV location, N values are 10 and 13 at 2.0 m depth and 3.0 m depth respectively. SBC at 2.0 m depth can be taken as 120 kPa. So pressure transmitted at 2.0 m depth should be restricted below 120 kPa. Based on that the SBC value is restricted as 160 kN/m2.

Based on Settlement
