Sometimes you wait for a bus for ages, and then three come along at once! After all the excitement of Easter it appears that May is just like that, for unusually we have three major events to celebrate within the church all neatly contained within the month, and each one has something important to say to us as the Christian community.

The first is Ascension Day (14th May) and because it falls on a Thursday it often gets overlooked. This is the day we recall the Ascension of Christ, our Risen lord, back into heaven. Sometimes we forget that this is where he came from, that God “took our flesh” and lived among us. Yet once his mission of salvation is complete (Good Friday and Easter Day), he returns to his Father to reclaim his Lordship over all things. Someone has said that Jesus is either Lord of All or No Lord at All. Ascension reminds us that he is Lord of Lords and King of Kings. He is over everything, and that is why we are called to worship him. To celebrate we climb the tower at St Andrew’s Chew Magna at 7.30am to greet our risen and ascended Lord, and to pray together. Come along, get the best view in the valley before breakfast, and get your day off to a good start!

The second is the feast of Pentecost (24th May). This is very much the birthday of the Church when God sent his Spirit on the disciples, turning them from a group of frightened individuals into a fearless community ready and able to preach the gospel and continue the mission of Jesus. It is a big day for all the churches, so come and celebrate this birthday at one of our services. Pray too that the Spirit may work among us as we continue that work of sharing God’s love in our world.

And the third is just a week later (31st May) when we celebrate Trinity Sunday. We do this at Holy Trinity Church together at 10.30am as one of our Patronal Service celebrations, and we are reminded that we meet the God we worship in three distinctive ways. First as a loving Father who created us and our world for good; second in his Son Jesus who comes among us, gives his life for us, and reveals to us new life as our Risen Lord; and third as his Spirit, the same Spirit that came at Pentecost and stays with us and among us today, guiding and enlivening the Church community. So you will see that May is quite a month – do come and join in!

Yours in Christ; Charles Roberts Listed Places of Worship - Roof Repair Fund

St Michael the Archangel, Dundry has successfully secured a grant of £99,900 from the Government’s Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund to address urgent roof repairs that will ensure it is weathertight, safe and open for use. It is one of 502 grants from a total funding package of £30 million that have been announced for urgent roof repairs for places of worship across the UK by the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The Fund is administered by the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) on behalf of the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS). More details are available at www.lpowroof.org.uk.

The PCC at St Michael’s Church Dundry want to thank the other churches in the Lakeside Group for their kind hospitality and generosity as they respond to the Roof Appeal and the temporary Church closure. It is a difficult and worrying time, but the signs of real hope are already there and we believe God is at work.

Mike Rowland gave us a really amusing and interesting talk on ‘Statues and Monuments of ’. A speaker to be strongly recommended to other groups and organisations.

May 20th is a speaker free meeting as we debate this year’s resolution on the need for health care and personal care to be assessed as one, for those requiring it, and not as separate issues. This will be followed by probably a quiz, badge making and a look at members baby photos (of themselves).

So ladies, find that snapshot of yourself looking cute and bring it along.

The schedules for the Produce Show 2015 will soon be circulating, available from June Ball (0117 964 1119) and some in the Village Hall. On the theme of photos, the subjects for the show are The Weather, A Day Out and Animals at Play and My Favourite Photo (for children only). Time to think about taking, growing and making those masterpieces for the ‘Big Event’!

Diary/Dateline Wednesday, 20th May. Monthly WI meeting at 7.30pm in Dundry Village Hall. Resolutions discussion followed by quiz.

A big ‘thank you’ to all who supported the Comedy Magic Show last month at Parish Hall. The performance by Oz Moses was excellent, his mix of humour whilst introducing some quite amazing magic routines was well received by an appreciative audience. Supper of shepherds pie was provided by the Unusual Meat Pie & Pork Pie Company of Shepton Mallet & once again Butcombe Brewery were fantastic with their support, other local business’ helping us with Raffle prizes. Funds raised were just over £900 – excellent.

Our next event is a repeat of last year’s successful Sea Shanties evening with the Barnacle Buoys once more entertaining us on the shores of on Friday 26 June (by kind permission of Chew Valley Sailing Club). Tickets will be available by end April, priced at £12 and £6 for those aged 6-14 years (children under 6 free) to include supper of pates & cheese as well as delicious puddings, with a cash bar. Why not come along and enjoy the wonderful views in a relaxing evening with friends at this fantastic amenity on our doorstep.

June will also see the annual House to House collection throughout the extended Chew Valley, our biggest single fund raising effort which last year saw an excellent £3500 passed on to the Charity. We remain hugely grateful to our many collectors but several villages are barely covered, so we would be delighted to hear from anyone who thinks they could give us a few hours of their time to help.

The ever popular Curry Lunch is planned for Friday 6 November at Ubley Parish Hall. This is now always oversubscribed, so apply early when tickets go on sale towards the end of September.

Meeting of Dundry Parish Council held on Monday, 13th April 2015

Public Forum - Nick Wilton introduced himself as Conservative candidate for election as District Councillor to the Winford Ward. He said he was aware of the ‘purdah’ rules about endorsing candidates for particular parties but would like advice on how best to introduce himself to the electorate in Dundry. Councillors said that there was no reason why Mr Wilton should not hold a meeting at his own expense in Dundry but that for fairness, and in order for the event to be advertised on parish noticeboards and the website, the only other candidate, Hugh Gregor, should be invited to participate.

Dogs - A parishioner had asked whether another ‘No dogs’ sign could be installed on the playing field. Cllr Laux said that he had one available and would try to find a conspicuous place to fix it. There was general discussion about dog fouling in the village particularly on the grass outside Beechcroft.

Complaint from parishioner - A parishioner had written to complain that she was not receiving sufficient support from the Parish Council in her attempts to make improvements in the village. Her email and councillors’ responses are summarised as follows: • Request to the bus company to re-route the 672 bus round Crabtree Lane so that parishioners did not have to walk along Downs Road to get to the bus. – Councillors thought that the bus company would not consider a request from just one user and suggested that a petition from several users might be more effective. However, it was thought that there might be a problem with the bus having to reverse with passengers on board if it met another vehicle in the narrow part of Crabtree Lane. • Parking on pavements and in the turning circle in Crabtree Close – The Clerk was asked to take this up with the PCSO. However, it was pointed out that some of the properties in Crabtree Close have no off-road parking at all. • Problems with litter – If an area was particularly affected by litter it should be reported to Councillor Jennings who would instruct the village orderly. • Problems of hedges overgrowing the pavement – in the first instance the parish council could approach the landowner. If this didn’t work NSC could be asked to intervene.

Broadoak Hill - A letter had been sent to Councillor Nigel Ashton about the lack of progress on Broadoak Hill. The Clerk said she had not yet received a direct response from Councillor Ashton (but was not necessarily expecting one as the DPC letter had asked for a response by 20th April) but had seen copies of responses from various officers to various recipients which gave no dates for commencement or completion of repair works. However, she thought that the traffic lights were working better now that they were on a timer.

Speed limit A38 – In response to DPC’s request for the 40mph speed limit on the A38 to be extended at least as far as Dundry Lane NSC now proposed reducing the limit to 50 mph from the junction with the South Bristol Link to Dundry Lane. Councillors were pleased that a reduction in speed limits was being considered but were of the opinion that, apart from still being too high, the mixture of limits from the outskirts of Bristol to the Airport would be confusing for drivers and difficult to police.

Adopt a kiosk – The Clerk had asked BT whether it was possible for the Parish to ‘adopt’ the phone kiosk outside the Dundry Inn since it was on land belonging to the pub. BT had replied that permission would be needed from the landowner. There was some discussion of the desirability of adopting this kiosk since this would involve ongoing maintenance costs. However, there were some parishioners who were keen to take it over so the Clerk was asked to find out whether the landowner would be in agreement.

High Speed Broadband update - Cllr Laux reported that a working group had formed to investigate the options for high speed broadband in the parish. A meeting had been held with BT Openreach where it had become apparent that although upgrading of Cabinet 48 on Broadoak Hill was still on BT’s list it was not at all imminent. To upgrade it sooner BT would ask for a contribution of £38,000. However, until BT formally said that they did not intend to upgrade the cabinet no funding would be available from Connecting Devon and Somerset. An online survey in the parish had so far attracted 69 replies. Cllr Laux summarised the findings. It had been apparent that broadband speeds were generally very slow. While some parishioners did not wish to pay very much towards improving broadband in the parish others were prepared to contribute significant sums. The working group had been looking at alternative options and would present their findings at the APM.

Sports and Social Club - Request to consider having permanent dugouts - The Sports and Social Club had asked for permission to erect permanent dugouts by the pitch as they were having trouble with the movable dugouts being blown over by the wind. Councillors were unanimously against this. They asked the Clerk to respond to the Sports and Social Club and to ask them to remove the removable rails over the summer.

Frack Free Chew Valley - Information originating from Frack Free Chew Valley had been received about possible exploration for coal bed methane in the Chew Valley and the surrounding areas, including Dundry. It was decided that further investigation was required into this before possibly inviting Frack Free Chew Valley to a meeting.

‘Dundry View’ Neighbourhood Arts Project - An email had been received from an artist proposing an art installation on Dundry Hill as part of the Bristol Green Capital celebrations. The aim of the project was to make Bristol more aware of Dundry Hill and the beautiful views available from the slopes and at the same time raise and address environmental issues affecting the area such as fly tipping and litter. It was agreed to invite this artist to the APM.

Planning Applications Received – 15/P/0515/CUPA Dutch Barn at Watercress Farm, Upton Lane, Dundry, BS41 8NS Prior approval for change of use from agricultural building and land to a single dwelling within use class C3 plus associated operational development comprising of works to convert dutch barn into a dwelling with corrugated cladding, doors and windows and replace corrugated roofing sheets - noted 15/P/0603/O 15 Crabtree Close, Dundry, BS41 8LW - Outline application for the erection of detached dwelling following demolition of annexe and detached garage with details of access and layout to be decided and all other details reserved for subsequent approval – Dundry Parish Council objects to this proposal which does not follow the general building line and, despite parking spaces being included on the plan, may well exacerbate an already existing parking problem in Crabtree Close. Applications Approved by NSC – none Applications Refused by NSC – none

Vehicle Activated Sign - The Clerk said that the vehicle activated sign had now been moved from Wells Road to Dundry Lane. It was still being triggered in this location by vehicles exceeding the 40mph speed limit although not at the rate it had been on Wells Road.

The next meeting of Dundry Parish Council will be held on Monday 18th May (note change of date)

If parishioners would like something to be included on the agenda please notify a councillor or the Clerk by Monday 11th May. You can also raise matters in the Public Forum but, depending on what they are, full discussion may have to be left to the following meeting.
