A series of wickedly devastating brushfires have encircled the City of Angels, turning the surrounding hills into a raging inferno. But Dave Navarro looks implacably cool as he pilots his black Harley down Ventura Boulevard. The guitarist's newly sprouted goatee gives him a conquistador's air of stony self-possession as he glides along the wide thoroughfare. A bandanna and shades protect his hair and eyes from the pall of smoke and cinders that have made the city's air seem like the mouth of a badly vented fireplace. Angelenos have learned not to let castastrophe interrupt their daily lives, and Navarro is no exception. His bike safely stashed in a "Loading Only" zone, the guitarist enters a trendy coffeehouse--one of those self-consciously bohemian places that could only exist in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley. Settling onto a worn antique sofa, he orders a cup of black decaf and a bowl of cereal moistened with fruit juice. "I don't eat dairy," he explains. "No caffeine either. Right now, this is my only vice..." He smiles as he lights the first of many cigarettes. Studying the self-confident, purposeful guy seated at my side, I can't help but contrast him with the Dave Navarro I interviewed two years ago [GW, September '91]. Red Hot Chili Peppers Group 3 Kaitlin Gaedtke Lauren Lalumiere Maisey Pierce Why the Red Hot Chili Peppers? The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an innovative rock group formed in the early 80s. They have seemingly always been hugely influential in the style of rock and alternative rock. Still successful in creating music and performing today. Group Biography RHCP were formed from a California high school friendship and a mutual appreciation for punk rock and funk. Started out as “Tony Flow & the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem,” this is also where their performing nude “trademark” started They began a recording contract with EMI and gained popularity when their videos were featured on MTV Group Biography (Cont.) Several members fought drug addiction along the way; one (Slovak) even died from a heroin overdose. They’ve had many different members but current members Kiedis and Flea are founders Flea (left in both pictures) and Kiedis (right in both pictures) have been friends since they went to highschool together! Current Members Anthony Kiedis: lead vocals (1983-present) Flea: bass, trumpet, piano, backing vocals (1983-present) Chad Smith: drums, percussion (1988-present) Josh Klinghoffer: guitar, keyboards, backing vocals (2009-present) Anthony Kiedis: went to highschool with Flea in California, where they acknowledged their mutual admiration of punk rock and funk groups by forming a band together. talent for poetry and was convinced by Flea and Slovak to write music. FUGAZi "First Demo" dischord rEcords DIS181 DIS181CD 11-song CD DIS181V 11-song LP+MP3 Release Date: November 18, 2014 Ian MacKaye - vocals, guitar Guy Picciotto - vocals Joe Lally - bass Brendan Canty - drums In early January 1988 and after only ten shows, Fugazi decided to go into Inner Ear Studio to see what their music sounded like on tape. Despite the fact that Ian, Joe, and Brendan had been playing together for nearly a year, it was still early days for the band. Guy had only been a full member of Fugazi for a few months and only sang lead on one song ("Break In"). It would be nearly another year before he would start playing guitar with the band. At that time, the studio was still located in the basement of engineer Don Zientara's family house. It was a familiar space as almost all of the members of Fugazi had recorded there with their previous bands (Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Deadline, Insurrection, Rites of Spring, Skewbald, Embrace, and One Last Wish). Joey Picuri (aka Joey P), who would later become one of Fugazi's longtime sound engineers, joined the band for the initial tracking. The sessions only lasted a couple of days, but tour dates and indecision about the tape would delay the final mix for another two months. Though the band was at first pleased with the results, it soon became clear that this tape would remain a demo as new songs were being written and the older songs were evolving and changing shape while the band was out on tour. -
