Ephesians 5:15–21
CORNERSTONE BIBLE CHURCH June 17, 2012 DON’T WASTE YOUR SUMMER Ephesians 5:15–21 Introduction: Jonathan Edwards’ 70 Resolutions • It was the summer of 1722 and a young 18-year-old by the name of John was in a major transition of his life. Two years before he had graduated first in his class at Yale University; now he was about to finish his master’s degree from that same institution. All he had left to do was to complete his master’s thesis, but he decided to take about 10 months to go to NYC to pastor a small struggling church. It was the perfect oasis for him to think about his life. • It was during that summer that this young man began to write out 70 little statements that he would use to govern his life. These were his commitments to bring his life under the total submission to the Lordship of Christ. These 70 resolutions, as they have come to be known, from an 18-year-old stand as a witness of someone who wanted Christ to be his life. • This man, who is better known as Jonathan Edwards, will become one of the greatest pastors or theologians that our country has ever known. But also, make no mistake about this: that while he was a very gifted individual, these resolutions shaped him. He worked hard to get the most out of who he was in Christ. And as he stood looking at the rest of his life, he simply wanted to give it all to Christ. -

MIAMI UNIVERSITY — THE GRADUATE SCHOOL CERTIFICATE FOR APPROVING THE DISSERTATION We hereby approve the Dissertation of Andrew M. Dudas Candidate for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Dr. Philip A. Russo, Jr., Director Dr. Ryan J. Barilleaux, Reader Dr. Enamul H. Choudhury, Reader Dr. John H. Benamati, Graduate School Representative ABSTRACT THE USE OF COMMUNITY OPINION SURVEYS IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT STRATEGIC DECISION MAKING by Andrew M. Dudas Local government officials often times fulfill a dual role in policy making. This dual role amounts to officials being both a policy analyst and a policy-maker. Much of the policy-making done by local government officials is strategic in nature – planning for the future growth, development, and needs of the citizenry. In order to strategically plan for the future and make decisions within this framework, local government officials must have data at their disposal to help inform their decision making. In essence, local government officials then must also act as policy analysts – collecting data, analyzing it, and finally translating that data into meaningful policy decisions. This research examines one means of providing local government officials with data to help inform their decision-making – citizen surveys. Local governments often conduct surveys to collect information on a host of issues confronting their community. This research focuses on broad-based community surveys, the data that is collected, and the translation of that data into policy outcomes. Through the presentation of case illustrations, a survey typology is presented that can be used to classify individual surveys as being either informational, strategic, decisionistic, or symbolic based on identifiable factors in each survey and how the results were ultimately utilized by the local government. -
The Problem of Female Antagonisms in Blaxploitation Cinema Melissa
1 Who’s Got the “Reel” Power? The Problem of Female Antagonisms in Blaxploitation Cinema Melissa DeAnn Seifert, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Abstract: Between 1973 and 1975, films starring Pam Grier and Tamara Dobson such as Cleopatra Jones (Jack Starrett, 1973), Coffy (Jack Hill, 1973) and Foxy Brown (Hill, 1974) introduced leading black women into the predominantly male blaxploitation scene as aggressive action heroines. Within the cinematic spaces of blaxploitation films which featured women as active agents, a racial and sexual divide exists. These films positioned women either inside or outside of gender tolerability by utilising binary constructions of identity based on race, sex and elementary constructions of good and evil, black and white, straight and gay, and feminine and butch. Popular representations of lesbianism and sisterhood within blaxploitation cinema reflect a dominant social view of American lesbianism as white while straight women are consistently represented as black. However, these spaces also constricted black and white female identities by limiting sexuality and morality to racial boundaries. This article seeks to question the unique solitude of these female heroines and interrogate a patriarchal cinematic world where sisterhood is often prohibited and lesbianism demonised. I don’t believe in [women’s lib] for black people … we’re trying to free our black men … I like being a woman. I have been discriminated against, but not because I’m a woman. It’s because I am black … before [people] see me as being female, they see me as being black. The stigma that’s been placed on you because you’re black gives you enough kill to get you through the woman thing … it’s much tougher being black than being a woman. -

ABSTRACT In my project, I analyze the star text of María Félix (1914-2002). In spite of her prolific film career of 47 films and her memorable image in the media, the scholarly treatment of her films and larger star text has been limited. As vintage film magazines and Mexican melodramatic comics attest, Félix was very visible and her personal life was scrutinized as her “real-life” self played out characteristics from her mala mujer film persona—her multiple husbands and lovers, her relationship with her son, and even her wardrobe choices. I analyze many of her films and her image in other forms of media such as fotonovelas, trade magazines, and her biographical sources in the following chapters. Her star image is powerful and far-reaching and presents an alternative model of Mexican womanhood from the beginning of her film career in the 1940s through (and even beyond) her last film in 1970. The star text of María Félix is a site that registered tensions between modernity and the traditional at a particular moment in Mexican history. The Mexican Revolution of 1910 brought many changes to society as warfare destabilized the family and disrupted the region. After the war, the Revolution became institutionalized as the government attempted to put into practice the goals of the Revolution. From the 1940s and throughout 1950s and 1960s it was a time of increased ii industrialization and urbanization as people migrated to the cities to find employment, as it became increasingly difficult to support a family through farming. These social tensions registered in her films and star text are in relation to women’s changing roles as Mexican women gained more political freedoms, including national suffrage in 1953, and began working outside the home as the nation became more industrialized and urbanized throughout the 1940s and subsequent decades. -
