1 THE UNIVERSITY

Bowling Green State University is a state-supported, co- educational institution located in northwestern Ohio, 23 miles south of Toledo. It has a campus of more than 800 acres with 60 permanent buildings that provide the latest in modern higher educational facilities.

The enrollment at the beginning of the 1963-1964 academic year was 9,185 with students from 81 Ohio counties, 43 states and the District of Columbia plus 22 foreign countries.

Included on the campus are a 14,000-seat football stadium, a 5,700-seat basketball area, golf practice area, natatorium, 19 tennis courts, CAA-approved airport with surfaced runways, speech and hearing clinic, reading center, a library with volumes in excess of 340,000, a memorial chapel and other educational facilities.

Seventeen fraternities and 12 sororities are located on campus along with eight residence centers that accommodate most of the university's students.

Bowling Green is expanding its plant to provide the best possible environment for university life and to meet the needs of an in- creasing enrollment. Since 1955, 16 buildings, Rogers Quadrangle, Alice Prout Residence Hall, Hall of Music, Founders Quadrangle, University Union, Home Economics Building, South Hall, Over- man Hall, Fine Arts Building, Memorial Hall, Conklin Quadrangle, Women's Residence Center, Administration Building, Dining Center, a new residence center and the Kohl Hall addition, have been completed.

In the near future, construction will start on a new library, science complex, health center, additional dormitories and football stadium.

The first classes started at Bowling Green in 1914 with a faculty of 21 and an enrollment of 304. No significant expansion came until 1929 when Ohio's General Assembly renamed the school Bowling Green State College and provided funds for the develop- ment of a liberal arts college offering professional and pre- professional training. The school was renamed Bowling Green State University in 1935 as other undergraduate schools and the graduate school were added.

Today, the university is composed of three undergraduate colleges, College of Liberal Arts, College of Education and College of Business Administration, along with the Graduate School that offers master's degrees in seven fields plus a Doctor of Philosophy degree.

The four-year undergraduate programs lead to Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Education and Bachelor of Science in Journalism degrees. 1964 SCHEDULE

Perry has a right to be optimistic with seven veterans, including all-Mid-American Conference halfback Jay Cunningham, battling for the opening backfield positions with eight letter winners set to go on the line. The interior line, from guard to guard, figures to be the only weak link with guard Mel Foels being the lone veteran at the three posts. The three positions show a definite shortage of ex- perienced players. However, Jim Violet, voted the most improved player in the annual spring game, could well hold down right guard with sophomore Joe Siesel and Heath Wingate, both 220- pounders, battling for the center position. On the plus side of the ledger for the Falcons this season will be the added experience acquired by the reserves during the 1963 year plus the added depth in the backfield and at tackle. The problems seem to fall in the areas of the young and inex- perienced guards and centers and in the tough schedule against improved opponents. The starting line (according to the tentative depth chart) weighs in at an average of 220 pounds from end to end with the potential starting backfield of Cunningham, Jerry Ward, Steward Williams and Tom Reicosky tipping the scales at a 195 average. In 1963, the Falcons equalled their lowest finish in the Mid- American under Perry as they ended up third behind Ohio and Miami. In nine seasons, Perry has compiled an overall record of 68-9-5. This year's return of 15 key lettermen has left him with high hopes of adding to the plus side of this mark. The 1964 squad breakdown is: 15 seniors, 17 juniors and 27 sophomores from last year's undefeated freshmen squad. THE ENDS (3 Lettermen—4 seniors, 2 juniors, 6 sophomores) The problems should be of only a minor nature at this position with three lettermen along with nine 1963 reserves and sophomores listed on the roster. Veterans Tom Sims (200) and John Jennings (215) have the inside track for the starting posts. Sims, a second string All-Conference selection, led the team in pass receiving with 12 receptions for 177 yards in 1963. Highly regarded sopho- more Jamie Rivers (210), from Youngstown South, Norm Limpert (190), the nation's sixth leading punter last year with a 41.3 average and '63 reserve Paul Rolf (195) supply the needed depth. THE TACKLES (4 Lettermen—1 senior, 4 juniors, 4 sophomores) Plenty of talent for the next two seasons could well describe the tackle posts with four veterans set for 1964. Lettermen Jerry Jones (260), Tony Fire (235), Bill Earhart (225) and Tony Lawrence (295) keep this position's problems at a minimum. Jones came on fast last year for honorable mention all-Conference rating. Lawrence, already drafted by both the Boston Patriots and the St. Louis Cardinals, was the heaviest player in the nation last year as he scaled over 330 pounds. For added depth, frosh letter winners Bruce Burdick (225) and Henry Orr (215) will be available. THE GUARDS (1 Letterman—2 seniors, 3 juniors, 4 sophomores) At least one guard slot appears filled with Mel Foels (215) back seeking his second letter. At the other slot, spring surprise Jim Violet (205) has the inside track over '63 varsity reserve Jerry Harris (215) and sophomore Jim Porowski (215). Violet is the brother of last year's all-Conference choice Bill Violet. Bill Toth (220) a 63 reserve, and sophomore Jack Sohn (210) are ranked behind Foels. Some untested players need to come through to back up the front line efforts of Foels and Violet. THE CENTERS (0 Lettermen— 1 senior, 1 junior, 3 sophomores) This is the only position on the team without at least one letter- man available for duty. An outstanding sophomore Joe Siesel (220) from Bellevue and converted end Heath Wingate (220) are ranked as the likeliest contenders to take over the position held by Ed Bettridge for the past two years. This position is probably Perry's biggest worry with two other lettermen Ron Eaton and Bill Ruiter also gone. Ken Hockman (200) and Ed Helmlinger (215), a pair of '63 reserves, are standing in behind Siesel and Wingate. THE (1 Letterman—1 senior, 2 juniors, 3 sophomores) Tri-captain Jerry Ward (185), an honorable mention all Mid- American Conference choice in 1963, is the answer at this post. Ward has picked up two letters. He stepped right into the first string slot after being a third stringer as a sophomore. He com- pleted 59 of 127 passes in 1963 for 858 yards and four touchdowns. This experience puts him ahead of '63 reserve Dwight Wallace (170) plus sophomores Russ Jacques (170) and Ray Fielitz (195). THE HALFBACKS (5 Lettermen—4 seniors, 3 juniors, 5 sophomores) The adjectives fast, powerful and experienced might well des- cribe the fleet of halfbacks. This position presents no problems for the Falcon coaching staff except for perhaps picking the right man to fill the right position at the right time. Aside from all-Conference Jay Cunningham (175), the vets are Jim Goings (170), who runs the 100 in 9.7, tri-captain Tom Reicosky (190), Tony Trent (170), who has already claimed two letters and Bob Pratt (190), the leading rusher in the spring game. For added depth, sophomores Dick Wagoner (190) and Mike Weger (190) are ready to go. The Falcons' halfback talent is probably the strongest in the school's history. THE FULLBACKS (1 Letterman—2 seniors, 2 juniors, 2 sophomores) Although there is only one letterman, tri-captain Jim Wisser (195), at this position, it can be quickly labeled as having few or no problems as sophomore Steward Williams (230) returns to the team. Williams missed spring drills due to a needed calcium deposit operation. He is being counted on to carry much of the offensive load but Wisser certainly can't be overlooked. He was voted as the team's most valuable player in 1963 as he finished second to Cunningham in the rushing department with 537 yards. Lynn Robinson (205) will provide more than adequate reserve strength for the fullback slot.

FALCON FORMATIONS Offense—Bowling Green is a balanced-line team, running several variations off of the straight-T formation. Wing- backs, slotbacks, some double wingback and an occasional split end as well as the regular T will all be part of the Fal- con attack in 1964. Defense—Always a successful defensive team, the 1964 Bowling Green unit will again operate out of the basic 5-4-2 Oklahoma formation. Depending on the situation, the Falcons sometimes shift into a four or a six-man line or a 6-2-2-1 setup. FINGERTIP FACTS ON THE FALCONS

COACH DOYT PERRY An average of only one defeat a season—this is the tremendous record established by Bowling Green State University's head coach Doyt Perry as he moves into his 10th season as director of BGSU football fortunes. In nine seasons at Bowling Green, Perry has run up a record of 68 wins, nine losses and five ties which leaves him as the winningest coach in the nation with a percentage of .860. This mark puts him ahead of such coaches as Oklahoma's Bud Wilkinson, Ohio State's Woody Hayes and Paul Dietzel from Army. While Perry has established himself among the nation's coaches, he has also made a name for himself on BG's campus as well as in the Mid-American Conference. Among the nine coaches who have handled the Bowling Green reigns since football started here in 1919, Perry has by far the top record. He has won more games than any other coach in the history of the sport at BG. In the league, Perry's teams have been somewhat similar to the Yankees as they have walked off with four championships and finished as runnerup three times. Last year tied a low water mark for a Perry-coached squad in the Mid-American as the Falcons "slipped" to third place with a 4-2 record. Even at this, the Falcons could have won the conference title if they had defeated traditional rival Ohio University. In 1963, the Falcons were turned back by the Bobcats and second place finisher Miami University. Perry's teams annexed the league titles in 1956-59-61-62. In 1956, the Falcons claimed the title by tieing Miami 7-7 when the Redskins participated in one less game. BG swept through the 1959 campaign with a 9-0 mark then moved to a 5-1 slate in 1961 before taking the title in 1962 with a 5-0-1 record, a 24-24 tie with Miami marring an otherwise perfect mark. In 1961, The BeeGees became the first team since Cincinnati turned the trick in 1947 to lose a game and still win the MAC crown. Perry's teams rang up 18 straight victories from the 1958 season until a final period touchdown by Ohio University ended the string in I960. Outside of the league, Perry's record borders on phenomenal with a mark of 27 wins in 28 starts. A 23-7 defeat to West Texas in 1962 is the only blot on the slate. In the 1961 post-season Mercy

26 Bowl, Fresno State took the measure of the Falcons by a 36-6 count. Along with the record, Perry coached Bowling Green's 1959 team to the Washington Touchdown Club award as the national college division champion and then finished second in the same competition in I960. Perry has also been selected as the Ohio Coach-of-the-Year in 1956 and 1959 and took UPI's Coach-of-the- Week honor once. In addition, he has coached 28 all-Ohio and all-Mid-American Conference players while two of his players, Bob Zimpfer and Bernie Casey, were Little All-America selections. Perry came to Bowling Green in 1955 after serving four years under Hayes at as head backfield coach. A strong advocate of "sound football," Perry is well known for his ability to mold his teams into versatile offensive and defensive units. Under Perry, the Falcons have averaged just over 27 points per game while holding the opposition to just over eight points per game. Being a successful coach is nothing new for Perry. Since he received his degree from Bowling Green in 1932, the former Falcon three-sport star has turned out nothing but winners. After four years of winning basketball and track coaching at Lorain Clearview, Perry instituted football there in 1937 and in the next six years guided his teams to a 32-9-4 record and four league championships. In 1943, he joined the staff of Upper Arlington High School as head football and basketball coach. His first squad at the Columbus suburb school posted a 7-2 record and his basketball team went undefeated until the distict tournament semi-finals. After a three-year Navy hitch, Perry was back at Upper Arling- ton where he narrowed his coaching duties to only football. In the next five years, Perry's teams either won or shared the Central Buckeye title four times and went through two undefeated years. During his undergraduate days at Bowling Green, Perry was an outstanding athlete. He quarterbacked the 1929-30-31 teams that won 18 games without a loss. He was named to the all- NWOC all-star team for two seasons and won all-Ohio mention as a senior. He also rang up three letters apiece in basketball and baseball. He received his secondary education at Hartford High in Cro- ton, Ohio, where he also starred in three sports. Mrs. Perry is the former Loretta Zeroll of Elyria. The couple has three children—Mrs. David McClain (Judy), a 1962 BGSU graduate; David, 17 and D.L., 13.
