Established in 1910, the University is known best for the strength of its educational program and the standing of its faculty. The University is com- posed of three undergraduate colleges—College of Liberal Arts, College of Education and College of Business Administration— and a Graduate School which offers curricula leading to the mas- ter's degree in seven fields. All colleges have the highest level of accreditation. The University is fully accredited, with a faculty of 288 mem- bers, with more than 60% of the full time members possessing their doctorate degrees. Total enrollment last September (1961) was 7,659, which included 6,833 on campus and 826 in branches and extension classes in northwest Ohio. This year's estimated enrollment should approximate 7,200 on campus and 8,000 over-all. The University lies at the northeast edge of Bowling Green, a city of nearly 14,000 people in the heart of a region of rich agri- cultural lands, extensive industry and varied business enterprises. Located 23 miles south of Toledo, the University has a beautiful 800-acre campus, more than 60 permanent buildings, with more under construction, and modern equipment and facilities neces- sary for carrying on a broad, well-rounded program of university education in the highest American tradition. Included on campus are a 12,000-seat stadium, a 5,700-seat gymnasium, golf course, natatorium, tennis courts and other play- ing fields; CAA-approved airport with surfaced runways; speech and hearing clinic; reading center; library with more than 340,000 volumes; a beautiful chapel; and other educational facilities. Both Army and Air Force have ROTC units on campus.

1962 SPRING GAME An underdog Brown team, composed of the second team and other top reserves, spotted the first-string Whites an opening quarter touchdown before coming back with two of its own in taking a 14-6 victory in the annual spring intrasquad game May 10. Assistant coaches Bob Dudley and Jim Ruehl coached the winners, whose passing attack helped spell the difference over the team directed by Bob Gibson and Bill Mallory, the other two as- sistants. The Browns hit on seven of 12 passes for 108 yards, com- pared with just four of 12 and 43 yards for the Whites. The rush- ing statistics were practically even, with 201 yards for the losers to 196 for the Browns. Inability to sustain any long drives and work the ball well when near the goal line affected both teams. The Whites scored on a 10-yard pass from Bob Fearnside to Don Lisbon on their first series of downs, but an injury to Lisbon on the play took some of the offensive punch from the Whites the rest of the game. Sophomore Tom Reicosky set up the Browns' first TD with a dazzling 57-yard scamper in the second period. Sophomore full- back Guy McCombs then plunged for the final two yards to tie the score. Asa Elsea kicked the eventual winning point. McCombs also scored the final tally in the fourth period on a 1-yard run, Elsea again converting.

Mid-American Conference champions in two of the past three years and runner-up the other season, Bowling Green's foot- ball fortunes now rest upon the shoulders of practically an all- senior starting lineup backed up by many inexperienced reserves and sophomores.

Sixteen lettermen who contributed so much to the 25-3 rec- ord run up by the Falcons during those three years have departed. Seven of that group were starters. The 22 lettermen returning vary widely in experience, making about half of them almost as un- known in quality as some of the sophomores.

Coach Doyt Perry appraises his team as even lighter than last year's, but feels that the over-all team speed is better. Always a great running team, the Falcons also should "throw and catch" better, according to Perry. And the kicking game, when needed, should be the most improved part of BG's game. Freshman end Norm Limpert has the potential to punt with the nation's best and third-year placekicker Asa Elsea will be extending his own BG records every time he boots an extra point.

While Perry feels his offense should continue to move along at its 340 yards per game (seven-year average), he's quite con- cerned about the defense which was third among major colleges against scoring, fourth in total defense and seventh in rushing defense last year.

Finding the replacements for defensive stalwarts like Dick Newsome and Al Studer is a problem not easily solved, making the defensive end and linebacker situations possible trouble spots.

The line promises to be strong as any in the MAC through the first unit, with depth a problem at tackle and center. All-MAC selections Gary Sherman at guard and Bob Reynolds at tackle are the only returning starter in the line, although 14 letter winners return.

May Platoon Ends

Perry hints at platooning the ends to strengthen that spot defensively. Senior veteran Tom Hogrefe is the key man there since he can hold his own both ways. He sat out spring ball to rest a shoulder ailment, which could make him a doubtful per- former if it reoccurs. Letterman Gary Whitaker also will have to avoid the injury jinx that has plagued him to be of substantial value. Offensively, sophomores Tom Sims and Limpert look like two possible standouts, with Sims already listed as the top left end. Depth will come from John Doyle, switched from tackle to help defensively; Fred Phillis, an all-around wingman; letterman Bert Kennedy and Wayne Smith.

Tackle Depth A Question

In starting tackles Reynolds and Willis Jones, BG has two of the league's best, but depth behind them is a question. Reynolds is definite all-league and possible all-America material and Jones, voted the most improved player in spring practice, has come into his own after switching positions twice. Behind them are letter- man Bob Crofcheck, juniors Ken Burke and Larry Cook and soph- omore Jerry Craft, who missed valuable spring ball due to in- jury. A pair of eligible transfers, Steve Huzicko and Tony Lawrence, also will be given a good shot at reserve posts. At 6.5, 295 pounds, Lawrence (son of former Cincinnati Red Brooks Lawrence) reportedly has good moves for a big man. Guards Are "Good" Perry has four good MAC guards in Sherman and lettermen Joe Grant, Jim Wasserman and Bill Violet. They average 200 pounds and have excellent movement. The guards also will han- dle the linebacking duties on defense. Letterman Bob Blue adds depth, along with sophomores Mel Foels and Dick Acierto, both injured during the spring. Reserve Jay Dorsey and Jerry Harris, an outstanding frosh tackle last year, also have the ability to push for the top substitute roles.

Center A Toss-Up The battle for No. 1 offensive center may be a toss-up among seven candidates, though letterman Ed Bettridge has the defensive job all to himself. Elsea's two letters have been earned by his kick- ing, but he may see a lot of offensive action if reserves Ron Eaton, Bill Ruiter, Fred Koester and Frank Hedges, along with sopho- more Phil Baldwin, prove not quite ready for regular action.

Four Fight For QB Slot Two-year all-MAC Jim Potts has departed, leaving four applicants fighting for his position. If Perry could combine their talents, he'd have no worries. Co-captain Bob Fearnside is adequate offensively, outstanding defensively and one of the school's best athletes. Tony Ruggiero is another fine athlete who runs well with the ball. Jerry Ward, who directed the under- dogs to victory in the spring game, is the best passer. Moe Ankney has good poise running the team, but may be too small. Although Perry feels the passing game may be better, he realizes the present signal-callers definitely are lacking in game competition since Potts handled most of the passing for two years.

Halfbacks Are Strong Once again the Falcons are strong at halfback, though this depth will be needed if injuries mount up as they have the past two years. Four good ones are seniors Roger Reynolds and Don Lisbon, junior Barry Weaver and sophomore Jay Cunningham. Reynolds, last year's surprise, is dependable in all categories. Lisbon is the best blocker and a great runner, but has been injury- prone. Weaver has shown good defensive ability and he can run well. Perry describes Cunningham as one of the best sophomore backs he's coached. Letterman Earl Whiteside can fill in capably, but behind him are three sophomores who need experience. Tony Trent, John Moyer and Tom Reicosky were great frosh runners who will have to prove themselves.

Fullbacks Untested Ray Bell handles the offensive fullbacking well, and letter- man Mike Witte will specialize in defense, but after them the full- backs are untested. Jim Wisser, a converted guard; Lynn Robinson, the frosh team's leading scorer; Guy McCombs, a spring game standout; John Haschak, a converted halfback; and Bill Regnier, a defensive specialist, will be in the running for top reserve positions.

Despite a certain amount of inexperience, the 1962 Falcons should expect a year comparable to each of those turned in by Perry's outfits in his seven years as head coach. The enthusiasm and desire shown in spring practice was at an all-time high. This same spirit continued in the fall could help overcome any minor deficiencies and keep Coach Perry atop the heap as one of the na- tion's most successful grid mentors. PLAYER NOTES

13 MEET THE COACH

Doyt Perry can rightfully be proclaimed as the man who put Bowling Green State University on the football map, and in doing so helped both the Falcons and the rest of the Mid-American Conference attain the ranks of the "major" colleges. None of the other major col- lege head coaches can equal his 53-7-4 lifetime record, which averages out to a phenomenal Doyt Perry .859 percentage. Along with this fabulous record have come various honors ind distinctions. Perry twice was selected Ohio Coach-of-the-Year (1956 and 1959), UPI Coach-of-the-Week, was recipient of the Washington Touchdown Award as coach of the national college division champions in 1959 (BG was runner-up in 1960), has developed 20 all-Ohio and all-Mid-American Conference selec- tions and two Little all-Americans (Bob Zimpfer and Bernie Casey), and is one of the nation's outstanding clinic speakers. In addition, Perry's teams from 1958 through I960 ran up a BG record of 18 straight victories before a last quarter touchdown by Ohio University ended the string in I960. Against non-confer- ence foes, Perry's record is equally amazing. BG won 21 straight games against such teams as Wichita, Dayton, Xavier, Drake, Delaware, West Texas and Southern Illinois before dropping the Mercy Bowl tilt to Fresno State last year. The Falcons boast three MAC titles in his seven years, and they've never placed lower than third in the league. In 1956, BG took the league crown on a 7-7 tie with Miami, as the Redskins played one less game. In 1959, BG swept to its second MAC crown and the national title with a 9-0-0 mark, its first undefeated, untied season in 41 years of football. Last year the Falcons became the first team since Cincinnati in 1947 to absorb a defeat and still claim the title, winning their crucial finale by a 7-6 score over Ohio University. Along with a winning record at BG, Perry has brought an outstanding staff of young coaches and educators, a fine group of men who excel in the classroom as well as on the field, and a win- ning spirit among the students, faculty and staff, alumni and other BG sport followers that is second to none in the Midwest. Perry is a strong advocate of "sound" football, and his teams have proven to be all-around units which have been spectacular offensively and defensively. The Falcons have averaged nearly 28 points and 344 total yards per game, while limiting opponents to eight points and 204 total yards. In 1961, BG was third among major schools in defense against scoring, fourth in total defense and seventh in rushing defense. The Falcons also were ninth in rushing yardage. Being a successful coach is nothing new to Perry. Since he received his degree from BG in 1932, the diminutive Falcon 3- sport star has turned out winning teams. After four years of successful basketball and track coaching at Lorain Clearview, Perry instituted football there in 1937 and in six years had a 32-9-4 record, including four league champion- 14 ships. His basketball and track records at Clearview were even better than his football mark. In 1943 Perry moved to Upper Arlington as head football and basketball coach. His first football team at the Columbus suburb had a 7-2 season and the basketball team was undefeated until the semi-finals of the district tournament. After a 3-year U.S. Navy hitch, Perry returned to Upper Arlington in 1946 but limited his coaching duties to football. In the next five years, Perry had two undefeated teams and won or shared the Central Buckeye title four times. In 1951 selected Perry to join him in his in- itial year at Ohio State. Perry served four years as backfield coach and was considered by Hayes as his offensive statistical brain of the 1954 Rose Bowl and Western Conference champion Buckeye squad. During his undergraduate days at Bowling Green, Perry was an outstanding athlete. He quarterbacked the 1929-30-31 teams that went 18 games without a loss. He won all-NWOC honors for two seasons and all-Ohio mention as a senior. He was a regular forward for three seasons in basketball and finished his 9-letter career with three awards at shortstop. He received his secondary education at Hartford High in Croton (Licking County), Ohio where he was a 3-sport participant. Mrs. Perry is the former Loretta Zeroll of Elyria. They have three children—Judy, a 1962 BGSU graduate; David, 15; and D.L., 11.
