WESTERN EXPLORER 14 Days including free city walking tour Flights from Uliastai to UB (Day 14) limited to Tuesday and Friday departures ‘Local touch, dependability, professionalism and attention to detail. There was a real difference between the experiences of other tourists that we encountered and ours. Every point of comparison was a big plus for EL. The way the tour was structured, the vehicle, the EL team, the places, the families, the limited number of driving hours, the camping spots, the feeling of remoteness of the lakes depression … the list goes on. Many times we said to each other how glad we were to have chosen the right company. ‘ Teo Marinska, Western Explorer, 2017 This is a customisable trip. It is adaptable, giving you the freedom to build a unique and personal trip for your chosen date. Upgrade your accommodation for all - or just part - of your trip, slow down the pace with few extra nights here and there or add a few more active adventures along the way. Written by Jess! - Eternal Landscapes 2018 Page !1 Our Western Explorer In Brief Mongolia’s landscapes are powerful and immense and nowhere in Mongolia do the landscapes get more powerful than in the western provinces of Bayan Ölgii, Uvs, and Zavkhan. What also makes this region so unique is that it is rare to find such a variety of biological diversity (ecosystems include semi-desert, interconnected shallow lakes, dunes, steppe grasslands, forests and mountains) in such proximity. This closeness of diversity is matched by few other places in the world. This region makes the ultimate road trip - travelling and camping through the vast weathered landscapes – made up of sunlight and shadow, rock, scrub, streams and fast flowing rivers. It is time spent exploring and ‘just being’ in the landscapes which can be such an uplifting and enlightening part of a Mongolian experience and this is an essential element of this trip. It’s a chance to remove your watch, take a break from the modern world and let each day and each journey unfold. Come with us on this exciting and original road trip and gain a fresh perspective. All images used throughout this document were taken either by EL guests or members of the EL team. This is the Mongolia that you will also experience. For those already in the city, allow us to show you a more local side to this vibrant frontier style with a strong Mongolian identity of its own. You’ll spend the day with one of my female trip assistants. This day is not about museums or shopping – it’s about having experiences that showcase the diversity of this great city and give you a contrasting insight into a way of life, compared to that of the rural population. The day will include Nogoon Nuur (Green Lake) • Accommodation: Of your own choice community project - a community space created Meals: Local lunch and welcome drink • for the local population of the nearby Bayangol ger • Travel: Free transfer districts by Ulzii - a Mongolian philanthropist. Written by Jess! - Eternal Landscapes 2018 Page !5 Day 2 - 4 Tsengel Khairkhan Fly to Ulgii - the provincial capital of Bayan Ulgii Aimag where you will meet your EL team. Together you will then transfer out to Sagsai - a district of the province where you will spend the evening with the Basahakhan family at their summer pasture. All are Kazakh families and the head of each household is an eagle hunter - although the eagles naturally moult from March/April through to September and during this time the eagles are ‘rested’ - with no training or hunting taking place. The landscapes of Tsengel Khairhan form the backdrop to your free day. This mountain has an elevation of 3,943m and is one of highest glacier mountains in the Mongol-Altai mountain range. We leave the other two days flexible. You could take a horse trek. Alternatively, spend the day relaxing enjoying the rural way of life of Baskakhan and his family. This is the incredible welcome table that typically awaits us at the home of the Kazakh families we stay with - as Kazakh culture dictates, they are warm and generous hosts. At some point during your time in Bayan Ulgii, we hope you will get to try 'Besbarmak', a dish consisting of boiled horse or mutton. This is is one of the most popular Kazakh dishes and is also called 'five fingers' because of the way it is eaten - using your hands. Written by Jess! - Eternal Landscapes 2018 Page !8 Day 7 Ulgii Travel back to Ulgii where you will be hosted by Jako and her family - including an informal evening meal. As well as spending time at the family home, do as the locals do and visit the market where you can purchase some locally made wool and embroidery crafts and take in the view from Ulgii’s ‘Zaisan’ - always popular with local families.
