Location Malvern House is situated on the edge of Potten End; a Green Belt area designated as being an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Views stretch out across the Chiltern Hills and yet the small town of Berkhamsted lies only two miles to the south. Other local towns in the area include Tring and Harpenden. Communication links are excellent in the area with the A41 Bypass M connecting with the M25 (Junction 20) about 15 minutes away. There are a number of rail links available including Berkhamsted and Tring to London Euston (approximately 30 minutes) and the Metropolitan Line Underground service is available from both Chesham and Amersham (London Marylebone and Baker Street approximately 40 minutes). Sporting and recreational facilities in the area include golf at G Berkhamsted, Ashridge, Aldbury and Mentmore. There are leisure centres at Berkhamsted and Tring, plus Champneys Health Club in Wigginton. The National Trust owned Ashridge Estate provides access to thousands of acres of stunning open and wooded countryside via hundreds of footpaths and bridle paths. There is a wide choice of schooling for children of all ages E including Berkhamsted School, Potten End Church of England Primary School, Beechwood Preparatory School, Lockers Park Preparatory School in Hemel Hempstead, Chesham Preparatory School and Tring Park School for the Performing Arts. Property Malvern House is an impressive family house presented in immaculate condition on the outskirts of the desirable village of Potten End. The house is beautifully set within its own grounds and is approached by a gravelled driveway with room to park several cars. As part of the new planning system known as the Local Development Framework, information on urban wildlife is fundamental given the pressure on land resources in and around our towns. The aims of the study are: ‘To provide a well reasoned and coherent strategy for the protection and enhancement of key wildlife areas and network of spaces / natural corridors within the towns and large villages of Dacorum’. The Dacorum Urban Nature Conservation Study considers the wildlife resources within the six major settlements in Dacorum, namely Berkhamsted, Bovingdon, Hemel Hempstead, Kings Langley, Markyate and Tring. They were mapped using existing habitat information, additional sites identified from aerial photo interpretation and local knowledge. The areas adjacent to each settlement – up to a distance of 1km – were also mapped in a similar fashion to place the urban areas within the context of their surrounding environments. This process identified the most important sites already known such as Sites of Special Scientific Interest, local sites meeting minimum standards known as ‘Wildlife Sites’, and other sites or features of more local significance within the urban areas known collectively as ‘Wildspace’. These incorporated Hertfordshire Biological Record Centre’s ‘Ecology Sites’ where appropriate, old boundary features such as hedgerows and tree lines, as well as significant garden areas or open spaces which may survive.
