EVENING NEWS DIGEST: 10 MARCH 2018 „FULFILLING BAPU‟S DREAMS – PM MODI‟S TRIBUTE TO GANDHIJI‟ RELEASED The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, received the first copy of the book ‘Fulfilling Bapu’s Dreams – Prime Minister Modi‟s Tribute to Gandhiji‟ from Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, who formally released it at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 9 March 2018. The effort to connect the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi with nation-building comes at critical juncture in India‟s development journey. This book is an effort to underline this change. RENOWNED SUFI SINGER PYARELAL WADALI PASSES AWAY The younger of the Wadali Brothers duo, Ustad Pyarelal Wadali, passed away, at the age of 75 years. He died due to heart attack. The singer along with his brother Puranchand Wadali, was known for his famous compositions--including the song Rangrez for Tanu Weds Manu. Wadali Brothers: Hailing from a village in Amritsar district, the Wadali Brothers, the fifth generation of singers and musicians, are known for their humble beginnings and earned national and international recognition over the years. MAURITIUS PRESIDENT AMEENAH GURIB-FAKIM TO RESIGN OVER FINANCIAL SCANDAL CLAIMS In Mauritius, President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim is to resign after becoming embroiled in a financial scandal. Gurib-Fakim, who is the only female head of state in Africa, has been accused of using a bank card provided by an NGO to make personal purchases and will step down after ceremonies to mark the 50th anniversary of independence on March 12. At the age of 58, she took the honorary position of president in 2015 she became the first woman to do so in Mauritian history. RAJASTHAN PASSES BILL FOR DEATH PENALTY FOR RAPE OF GIRLS BELOW 12 Rajasthan Assembly approved a bill providing for death penalty to those convicted of raping girls under 12 years of age. The Criminal Laws (Rajasthan Amendment) Bill, 2018, seeks to add section 376-AA and 376-DD in the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Rajasthan home minister GC Kataria announced that the amendment bill will award life sentence and life imprisonment to child rapists and will ensure that the convict doesn't get out of the jail even after completing 14 years of sentence. FORMER MAHARASHTRA MINISTER PATANGRAO KADAM PASSES AWAY Maharashtra senior Congress leader Patangrao Kadam passed away in Lilavati hospital in Mumbai. He was 73. Patangrao Kadam: Patangrao was an influential and powerful leader in Maharashtra politics and was known as a staunch Congressman. Kadam was known for the quality educational institutes he set up. He set up Bharati deemed University which has campuses across India and even abroad. SAD PASSES RESOLUTION AGAINST JUSTICE RANJIT SINGH COMMISSION The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) passed a resolution, rejecting the Justice Ranjit Singh Inquiry Commission formed by Punjabs Congress government to probe incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and other religious texts. The resolution was passed at a Pol Khol rally organised at Noon Kalan, 20km from Ludhiana, in presence of SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and other senior leaders of the party. The previous SAD-BJP government in Punjab had appointed the Justice Zora Singh Commission to look into the incidents of sacrilege. Its report was dismissed by the Congress government. MUKESH AMBANI RICHEST INDIAN; JEFF BEZOS TOPS GLOBAL RICH LIST The latest reports by Forbes reported that Mukesh Ambani's net worth has soared to $40.1 billion, making him the richest Indian for the 11th year in a row, while Amazon founder Jeff Bezos toppled Bill Gates as the world's wealthiest person. According to Forbes' 2018 'World's Billionaires' list, Ambani was ranked 19th globally, up from 33rd position in 2017. Bezos, referred to as the "Centi-billionaire", topped the list with a net worth of $112 billion, becoming the only person to appear in the Forbes list with a 12-figure fortune. This year's list consists of 2,043 of the richest people in the world. The combined net worth of this elite group is a whopping $9.1 trillion, up 18 percent since last year. Their average net worth is a record $4.1 billion. Azim Premji is the second richest Indian and was ranked 58th on the overall list with a net worth of $18.8 billion, followed by Lakshmi Mittal (62nd position, net worth of $18.5 billion), Shiv Nadar (98th, $14.6 billion) and Dilip Shanghvi (115th, $12.8 billion). Get Ahead Page 2 EVENING NEWS DIGEST: 10 MARCH 2018 RARE SIGNED PHOTO OF MAHATMA GANDHI FETCHES OVER USD 41K AT AUCTION A signed vintage photo of Mahatma Gandhi, walking alongside Madan Mohan Malaviya, was auctioned for USD 41,806 in the United States. Signed in fountain pen, "M K Gandhi," the rare photo was taken after the second session of India's Round Table Conference in London in September 1931. The autographed photo of Gandhi presents him as he is doing his life's work. At the auction, Karl Marx's letter requesting copies of his 'Revelations' from a noted radical editor sold for USD 53,509. The Fine Autographs and Artifacts auction began on February 17 and concluded on March 7. VETERAN ACTOR SHAMMI DIES AT 89 Veteran actor Shammi, who acted in over 200 films and some popular television serials and was known for her impeccable comic timing, died today after a prolonged illness. She was 89. Born as Nargis Rabadi in a Parsi family, Shammi featured in many popular films, including “Ustad Pedro”, “Bhai- Bahen”, “Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi”, “Half Ticket”, “Jab Jab Phool Khile”, “Ittefaq”, “The Burning Train”, “Kudrat”, “Awara Baap”, “Swarg”, “Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi” and others. About Shammi: She acted in quite a few popular TV serials, such as “Dekh Bhai Dekh”, “Zabaan Sambhal Ke”, “Shriman Shrimati”, “Kabhi Yeh Kabhi Woh” and “Filmi Chakkar”. Shammi was married to film producer director Sultan Ahmed for seven years, before they got divorced. INDIA RANKS 52 IN MASTERCARD WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS INDEX India ranked 52 among 57 countries studied for the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs (MIWE). The latest ranking for India remains unchanged from the previous year. The MIWE focusses on female entrepreneurs‟ ability to capitalise on opportunities granted through various supporting conditions within their local environments. India came significantly behind the United States (4) and China (29) in the latest MIWE. The Mastercard report highlighted that the progress of women entrepreneurs was held back by one or more obstacles in nearly all of the 57 economies covered. These obstacles are largely caused by perceptions of gender bias, which contribute to poor social and cultural acceptance, lack of self- belief and access to financial funding or venture capital.
