Building Bridges and Promoting People to People Interaction in South Asia EDITORS Nishchal N. Pandey Kumar Shrestha 2012 I Published by Centre for South Asian Studies, Kathmandu www.csas.org.np ©Publisher Year of Publication 2012 ISBN 978-9973-2-5165-6 Printed at Jagadamba Press Hattiban Lalitpur, 5250017-19 Email: [email protected] II PREFACE This publication is an outcome of a regional conference on “Building Bridges and Promoting People to People Interaction in South Asia” jointly organized in Kathmandu by the Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS), the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Confl ict (GPPAC) and the Regional Centre for Strategic Studies (RCSS) in October 2011. South Asia is one of the least connected regions. Political and security cruxes have for long impacted on regional cooperation endeavors even as trade, connectivity and travel have become helpless victims in the face of bilateral problems. Despite these hurdles, the civil society of South Asia has continued not only to advocate for peace and amity in the region, but also to recommend measures to strengthen SAARC, taking cue from the success story of ASEAN and the European Union. The South Asian civil society is a robust and enthusiastic group of people from every profession that has time and again demanded that SAARC must become a fl exible alliance that is effective and effi cient. While SAARC is an inter- governmental association, successive Summits have emphasized on the importance of promoting people-to-people contacts at all levels outside the State sector. The community of academics, CSOs, women leaders, NGO representatives and media persons that participated in this roundtable turned out to be an illustrious community with shared values championing peace, freedom and greater economic integration.

  • States of Affect: Trauma in Partition/Post-Partition South Asia
STATES OF AFFECT: TRAUMA IN PARTITION/POST-PARTITION SOUTH ASIA By Rituparna Mitra A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of English – Doctor of Philosophy 2015 ABSTRACT STATES OF AFFECT: TRAUMA IN PARTITION/POST-PARTITION SOUTH ASIA By Rituparna Mitra The Partition of the Indian subcontinent – into India and Pakistan in 1947 – was one of the crucial moments marking the break between the colonial and postcolonial era. My project is invested in exploring the Partition not merely in terms of the events of August 1947, but as an ongoing process that continues to splinter political, cultural, emotional and sexual life-worlds in South Asia. My dissertation seeks to map analytical pathways to locate the Partition and the attendant formations of minoritization and sectarian violence as continuing, unfolding processes that constitute postcolonial nation-building. It examines the far-reaching presence of these formations in current configurations of politics, culture and subjectivity by mobilizing the interdisciplinary scope of affect-mediated Trauma and Memory Studies and Postcolonial Studies, in conjunction with literary analysis. My project draws on a wide range of cultural artifacts such as poetry, cantillatory performance, mourning rituals, testimonials, archaeological ruins, short stories and novels to develop a heuristic and affective re-organization of post-Partition South Asia. It seeks to illuminate through frameworks of memory, melancholia, trauma, affect and postcoloniality how the ongoing effects of the past shape the present, which in turn, offers us ways to reimagine the future. This dissertation reaches out to recent work developing a vernacular framework to analyze violence, trauma and loss in South Asia.

Political activist, actor, playwright and poet, Safdar had been deeply committed, like so many young men and women of his generation, to the anti-imperialist, secular and egalitarian values that were woven into the rich fabric of the nation’s liberation struggle. Safdar moved closer to the Left, eventually joining the CPI(M), to pursue his goal of being part of a social order worthy of a free people. Tragically, it would be of the manner of his death at the hands of a politically patronised mafia that would single him out. The spontaneous, nationwide wave of revulsion, grief and resistance aroused by his brutal murder transformed him into a powerful symbol of the very values that had been sought to be crushed by his death. Such a death belongs to the revolutionary martyr. 6 PUBLICATIONS Safdar was thirty-four years old when he died.

  • Influence of Arabian Music on Indian Musical Composition
Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology Issn No : 1006-7930 Influence of Arabian Music on Indian Musical composition: Dr. Azizul Hoque, Asstt. Prof. in Arabic Rupahi College Nagaon, Assam, India Mail ID- [email protected] Abstract Arabic language has an extraordinary musical rhythm and lyrical spirit. Arabian people were rich in music from Pre-Islamic period. During Islamic period the tradition of music and romance were stopped due to Islamic ideology overpowered the peninsula. During the Umayyad period, the pagan spirit has itself asserted again in the holy cities of Hijaj. The Umayyad rulers were patron of music and dance. They imported dancing girls from Europe. The cities of Hijaj and Najd became the centre of love, romance and music. The musician Zyrab has received monthly stipend from the Caliph. The tradition of musical composition and romance were continued to the later periods also. During the Abbasid period, Arabic Sufi poetry received a huge impetus due to its lyrical spirit and Divine emotions. The mystery behind the popularity of Arabic music is that the phonetics of the language itself provides musical sound, rhythmic, awe-inspiring, and resonance to listening. The continuous victory of the Arabian rulers and expansion of its territory to the Non-Arabian countries has witnessed the influence of music and romance there. Muslim rulers came in India in 7th century and it continued till the defeat of the last king of Mughal and the arrival of East India Company. During this period many Sufi saints came in India to preach the Religion of Islam. Their heart melting Sufi song and musical ornamentation have influenced over the musical system in India.
