South Asia is one of the least connected regions. Political and security cruxes have for long impacted on regional cooperation endeavors even as trade, connectivity and travel have become helpless victims in the face of bilateral problems. Despite these hurdles, the civil society of South Asia has continued not only to advocate for peace and amity in the region, but also to recommend measures to strengthen SAARC, taking cue from the success story of ASEAN and the European Union. The South Asian civil society is a robust and enthusiastic group of people from every profession that has time and again demanded that SAARC must become a fl exible alliance that is effective and effi cient. While SAARC is an inter- governmental association, successive Summits have emphasized on the importance of promoting people-to-people contacts at all levels outside the State sector. SHRI HARISH DWIVEDI Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state: (a) the number and names of dams older than ten years across the country, State-wise; (b) whether the Government has conducted any study regarding safety of dams; and (c) if so, the outcome thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR JAL SHAKTI & SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EMPOWERMENT (SHRI RATTAN LAL KATARIA) (a) As per the data related to large dams maintained by Central Water Commission (CWC), there are 4968 large dams in the country which are older than 10 years. The State-wise list of such dams is enclosed as Annexure-I. (b) to (c) Safety of dams rests primarily with dam owners which are generally State Governments, Central and State power generating PSUs, municipalities and private companies etc. In order to supplement the efforts of the State Governments, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR,RD&GR) provides technical and financial assistance through various schemes and programmes such as Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Programme (DRIP). DRIP, a World Bank funded Project was started in April 2012 and is scheduled to be completed in June, 2020. The project has rehabilitation provision for 223 dams located in seven States, namely Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand. The objectives of DRIP are : (i) Rehabilitation and Improvement of dams and associated appurtenances (ii) Dam Safety Institutional Strengthening (iii) Project Management Further, Government of India constituted a National Committee on Dam Safety (NCDS) in 1987 under the chairmanship of Chairman, CWC and representatives from State Governments with the objective to oversee dam safety activities in the country and suggest improvements to bring dam safety practices in line with the latest state-of-art consistent with Indian conditions.

The Indian market when it comes to most industries is highly saturated with several players, both domestic and international, whether it is the FMCG Industry or the Service Industry. But with changing times in the country, a new medium to conduct traditional businesses has shown promise: creation of digital intermediaries in what has been traditional services being conducted for years. This digitisation has the potential of opening up uncontested market space in the form of blue oceans. Whether its Ola Cabs which was founded in the year 2010, or Big Basket founded in 2011 these companies have been able to completely change the Indian market by simply allowing people to access the same services they have always been able to, but through their phones and computers. The area is highly inviting to new entrepreneurs as its as simple as finding an old service and playing the role of facilitating the meeting between demand and supply.

    STATES OF AFFECT: TRAUMA IN PARTITION/POST-PARTITION SOUTH ASIA By Rituparna Mitra A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of English – Doctor of Philosophy 2015 ABSTRACT STATES OF AFFECT: TRAUMA IN PARTITION/POST-PARTITION SOUTH ASIA By Rituparna Mitra The Partition of the Indian subcontinent – into India and Pakistan in 1947 – was one of the crucial moments marking the break between the colonial and postcolonial era. My project is invested in exploring the Partition not merely in terms of the events of August 1947, but as an ongoing process that continues to splinter political, cultural, emotional and sexual life-worlds in South Asia. My dissertation seeks to map analytical pathways to locate the Partition and the attendant formations of minoritization and sectarian violence as continuing, unfolding processes that constitute postcolonial nation-building. It examines the far-reaching presence of these formations in current configurations of politics, culture and subjectivity by mobilizing the interdisciplinary scope of affect-mediated Trauma and Memory Studies and Postcolonial Studies, in conjunction with literary analysis. My project draws on a wide range of cultural artifacts such as poetry, cantillatory performance, mourning rituals, testimonials, archaeological ruins, short stories and novels to develop a heuristic and affective re-organization of post-Partition South Asia. It seeks to illuminate through frameworks of memory, melancholia, trauma, affect and postcoloniality how the ongoing effects of the past shape the present, which in turn, offers us ways to reimagine the future. This dissertation reaches out to recent work developing a vernacular framework to analyze violence, trauma and loss in South Asia.
