  • Maternal Representation in Reality Television: Critiquing New Momism in Tlc’S Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Jon & Kate Plus 8
MATERNAL REPRESENTATION IN REALITY TELEVISION: CRITIQUING NEW MOMISM IN TLC’S HERE COMES HONEY BOO BOO AND JON & KATE PLUS 8 A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English By Isabel Silva, B.A. Washington, DC March 24, 2014 Copyright 2014 by Isabel Silva All Rights Reserved ii MATERNAL REPRESENTATION IN REALITY TELEVISION: CRITIQUING NEW MOMISM IN TLC’S HERE COMES HONEY BOO BOO AND JON & KATE PLUS 8 Isabel Silva, B.A. Thesis Advisor: Pamela A. Fox , Ph.D . ABSTRACT This thesis explores the ways that TLC’s reality programs, specifically Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Jon and Kate Plus Eight, serve as hegemonic systems for the perpetuation of what Susan Douglas and Meredith Michaels call “new momism.” As these authors demonstrate in The Mommy Myth, the media have served as a powerful hegemonic force in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries for the construction of this dominating ideology of proper motherhood which undermines the social victories of feminism. Expanding upon Douglas’ and Michaels’ analysis of national constructions of motherhood, I explore the role of reality television, a relatively new cultural medium, within the historical tradition of hegemonic institutions. My research examines representations of motherhood specifically within reality programs which document a family’s day- to-day life, differing from other types of reality shows because they take place within the private sphere of the home. These programs market performances of motherhood that invite viewers, specifically those who are mothers themselves, to construct their own identities in opposition to “transgressive” mothers and in awe of “ideal” mothers, thereby reaffirming the oppressive and unreasonable expectations of twenty-first century motherhood.

Both texts provide valuable insight into how southern femininity is disciplined and subverted by individual women and the public. Humorous prescriptive literature in the first chapter provides the data necessary to delineate key markers of “ideal” southern femininity and how primarily elite white women perform it. The second chapter focuses on the show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and how June Shannon opened up a liminal space for thinking about alternative southern femininities before ultimately closing it with her scandal in late 2014.

Good Character: Reality Television Production as Dirty Work Abstract Audiences, critics, and academics have raised significant moral concerns about reality television. The genre is commonly criticized for being exploitative, harmful, and fake. By extension, reality TV workers are morally tainted, seen as dirty workers of questionable character. This dissertation describes the sources of moral taint in reality television production and how production workers dispel this taint—making their work acceptable and even glorious to themselves and others—through everyday micro-level interaction. The data for this study comes from approximately 2 years of ethnographic observation at 2 reality TV production companies, attendance at 2 reality TV industry conferences, and interviews with 83 respondents, including reality TV production workers, television network executives, and people who auditioned to be on reality shows. Findings focus on the development process, during which production companies generate ideas for new television shows and pitch those ideas to television networks. First, I describe the development process and three significant moral dilemmas that workers face at this initial stage of production: creating negative representations (e.g.

Scripps School of Journalism and the Scripps College of Communication by Aimee Edmondson Associate Professor of Journalism Scott Titsworth Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii ABSTRACT CAREY, MICHAEL CLAY, Ph.D., August 2014, Mass Communication-Journalism Telling Us What We Already Know: A Case Study Analysis of Poverty Coverage in Rural Appalachian Community News Outlets Director of Dissertation: Aimee Edmondson This dissertation examines the roles local news organizations in three rural Appalachian communities play in the facilitation of discussions about local poverty. The study is grounded in Stuart Hall’s theoretical understanding of the encoding and decoding of media messages (1980), which offers insight on the way social practices influence the production and interpretation of news. Through three separate case studies using qualitative research methods (textual analysis and in-depth interviews), the study describes the dominant media frames local journalists used to describe poverty. Interviews with 11 current and former journalists describe the social and professional habits and philosophies that shape their coverage. Interviews with 40 local residents offer insight into how those messages are interpreted.

My project specifically explores the “intimate” micro-genre, considering the politics of respectability and gendered labor as foundational elements in what is a particularly fertile and volatile site of meaning- making. Grounding my analysis in a comprehensive map of reality programming allows me to explore a pattern of politically rich programs set in the South. Shows such as Duck Dynasty, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, and Real Housewives of Atlanta offer insight into the circulation and currency of race, class, and gender with significant theoretical implications for an economically and politically unstable national moment.
