Its full and favoring vapors extended a hundred leagues; 山遠在空翠 4 At last as the sun went in, my journey brought me there. At the valley’s mouth I heard the voice of a bell;2 氛氳亘百里 On the verge of a grove, sensed fumes of incense. 4 日入行始至 Wielding a horse’s reins, I came to find an old friend3 – 8 Now loosing the saddle, I stop awhile from riding. 谷口聞鐘聲 A stone gate stands sheer in the steepness of the gorge; 林端識香氣 A footpath by a bamboo-brake turns in the forest’s depths. The dharma companion takes delight in our meeting; 杖策尋故人 12 His rarefied talk holds me sleepless till next daybreak. All life long I have admired true reclusion, 8 解鞍暫停騎 Through the hoard of days searched for holy wonders. 石門殊壑險 Here an old man of the moors goes into the fields at morning, 16 And a mountainside monk comes home at evening to his temple. 篁徑轉森邃 A spring near pine-trees multiplies echoes of purity, 法侶欣相逢 12 清談曉不寐 平生慕真隱 累日探靈異 野老朝入田 1 “His (or Your) Eminence” is an honorific for a Buddhist monk. Zhan (or perhaps Zhanran湛然) is his religious name, meaning“profound clarity.” Monk Zhan is 16 山僧暮歸寺 also addressed elsewhere (see 1.15). There were at least five“Incense Mountains” in areas that Meng Haoran may have visited in his lifetime; this seems to be the 松泉多清響 one in Jingshan district, a day’s ride southeast of Xiangyang, where we know there was a monk Zhanran in residence in the early 720s. The name is taken from the Buddhist Mount Gandhamādana, legendarily near sacred Mount Sumeru, and home of the gandharvas, deities of fragrance and music. 2 The bell is that of the monastery where monk Zhan resides. 3 Literally he has in hand a riding-crop. Having come to rest at this mountain gateway, 依止此山門 Who then could follow old Qiu’s example?1 誰能效丘也 1.3 1.3 宿天台桐柏觀 Passing the Night at Tongbo Abbey on Tiantai2 Journeying on the water I trusted my sail to the wind, 海行信風帆 To spend this night loitering on an island in the clouds. Following an urge for the Watchet Isles faraway, 夕宿逗雲島 4 I was enthralled by the beauty of Red Wall nearby.3 緬尋滄洲趣 Brushing past the bindweed, treading also on moss, The oars now set in check, I indulged in probing quest. 4 近愛赤城好 Finally resting in shade, I relaxed at Tongbo, 捫蘿亦踐苔 8 Plucking florets, searching for the magic herb.4 When a crane cries out, pure dew descends; 輟棹恣探討 When a cockerel crows, the appointed tide will run early. Would I might loosen capstrings and seal-cords, 息陰憩桐柏 12 From this time on discard all frets and vexations.

Where is he?” “I AM Xu Chu!” the man behind Cao Cao shouted. Supernatural light seemed to shoot from his eyes, and his air was so imposing that Ma Chao dared not make a move against Cao Cao. Translation helps disseminate foreign literature in the target system. An evident example is Ezra Pound’s translation based on the 8th-century Chinese poet Li Bo’s “The River-Merchant’s Wife,” which has been anthologised in Anglophone literature. Through a diachronic survey of the translation of classical Chinese poetry in English, the current paper places emphasis on the interaction between the translation and the target socio-cultural context. It attempts to stress that translation occurs in a context—a translated work is not autonomous and isolated from the literary, cultural, social, and political activities of the receiving end. Patterson This dissertation explores highly influential constructions of the past at a key turning point in Chinese history by mapping out what I term a poetics of memory in the more than four hundred poems written by Du Fu !" (712-770) during his two-year stay in the remote town of Kuizhou (modern Fengjie County #$%). A survivor of the catastrophic An Lushan rebellion (756-763), which transformed Tang Dynasty (618-906) politics and culture, Du Fu was among the first to write in the twilight of the Chinese medieval period. His most prescient anticipation of mid-Tang concerns was his restless preoccupation with memory and its mediations, which drove his prolific output in Kuizhou. For Du Fu, memory held the promise of salvaging and creatively reimagining personal, social, and cultural identities under conditions of displacement and sweeping social change. The poetics of his late work is characterized by an acute attentiveness to the material supports—monuments, rituals, images, and texts—that enabled and structured connections to the past. The organization of the study attempts to capture the range of Du Fu’s engagement with memory’s frameworks and media. It begins by examining commemorative poems that read Kuizhou’s historical memory in local landmarks, decoding and rhetorically emulating great deeds of classical exemplars.

    Revised and Replied for Resources Policy (SSCI) Total-Factor Water Efficiency of Regions in China Jin-Li Hu,* Shih-Chuan Wang, and Fang-Yu Yeh Institute of Business and Management, National Chiao Tung University Abstract. Water is a limited and unbalanced distributed resource in China, with the per capita amount of water resource there is only about one-fourth of the world's average. However, water is an essential resource for people’s lives and economic development. Over the past two decades China has seen the fruit of its rapid economic growth, nevertheless, a severe water shortage is behind this prosperous scenario and is becoming worse. Efficient water supply is certainly essential for the sustainable development of human beings. This paper analyzes water efficiency by incorporating water as an input as well as using conventional inputs such as labor employment and capital stock. An index of a water adjustment target ratio (WATR) is established from the production frontier constructed by data envelopment analysis (DEA) including water as an input. The water efficiency of regions is obtained from a total-factor framework with both residential and productive water use. A U-shape relation is discovered between the total-factor water efficiency and per capita real income among areas in China. The central area has the worst water efficiency ranking and the total adjustment amount of water use there is around three-fourth of China’s total. More efficient production processes and advanced technologies need to be adopted in the central area in order to improve its water efficiency, especially for its productive use of water.

Ideophones are defined as a set of words that are phonologically and morphologically marked and depict some form of sensory image (Dingemanse 2011b). Middle Chinese has a large body of ideophones, whose domains range from the depiction of sound, movement, visual and other external senses to the depiction of internal senses (cf. Dingemanse 2012a). There is some work on modern variants of Sinitic languages (cf. Mok 2001; Bodomo 2006; de Sousa 2008; de Sousa 2011; Meng 2012; Wu 2014), but so far, there is no encompassing study of ideophones of a stage in the historical development of Sinitic languages. The purpose of this study is to develop a descriptive model for ideophones in Middle Chinese, which is compatible with what we know about them cross-linguistically. The main research question of this study is “what are the phonological, morphological, semantic and syntactic features of ideophones in Middle Chinese?” This question is studied in terms of three parameters, viz. the parameters of form, of meaning and of use.

Vol. 32.2: 113-151 thomas j. mazanec How Poetry Became Meditation in Late-Ninth-Century China abstract: In late-ninth-century China, poetry and meditation became equated — not just meta- phorically, but as two equally valid means of achieving stillness and insight. This article discusses how several strands in literary and Buddhist discourses fed into an assertion about such a unity by the poet-monk Qiji 齊己 (864–937?). One strand was the aesthetic of kuyin 苦吟 (“bitter intoning”), which involved intense devotion to poetry to the point of suffering. At stake too was the poet as “fashioner” — one who helps make and shape a microcosm that mirrors the impersonal natural forces of the macrocosm. Jia Dao 賈島 (779–843) was crucial in popularizing this sense of kuyin. Concurrently, an older layer of the literary-theoretical tradition, which saw the poet’s spirit as roaming the cosmos, was also given new life in late Tang and mixed with kuyin and Buddhist meditation. Dazzling and rich in meaning, it is also difficult and obscure because of its pervasive allusiveness. Chapter I reviews critical opinion of Li's use of allusion. Many traditional critics see allusion as an ornamental rhetorical device and consider Li's profuse allusiveness an idiosyncrasy to be tolerated in an esteemed poet. Chapter II studies allusion broadly and precisely as a literary concept: generally, allusion is a "connector" of texts, a link between a poet's work and his literary heritage; specifi• cally, it is a linguistic device serving metaphorical functions.
