SUMMARY: The sagittal otolith of 348 species, belonging to 99 families and 22 orders of marine Teleostean fishes from the north and central eastern Atlantic and western Mediterranean were described using morphological and morphometric characters. The morphological descriptions were based on the otolith shape, outline and sulcus acusticus features. The mor- phometric parameters determined were otolith length (OL, mm), height (OH, mm), perimeter (P; mm) and area (A; mm2) and were expressed in terms of shape indices as circularity (P2/A), rectangularity (A/(OL×OH)), aspect ratio (OH/OL; %) and OL/fish size. The present Atlas provides information that complements the characterization of some ichthyologic taxa. In addition, it constitutes an important instrument for species identification using sagittal otoliths collected in fossiliferous layers, in archaeological sites or in feeding remains of bony fish predators. Islas Canarias, Espana. * Corresponding author: Fernando Espino email: [email protected] ABSTRACT A check-list of fishes regularly present in waters of the Gando-Arinaga area, in the East coast of Gran Canaria, is presented herein. This inventory includes 175 species, 22 of which were of chondrichthyans (belonging to 19 genera and 13 families), and 153 were of actinopterygiians (121 genera and 60 families); 77.15% of the species have stable popula- tions in the area and 61.15% have commercial interest. The zoogeographic analysis showed a dominance of the Atlantic-Mediterranean distribution species (26%), followed by the Warm- temperate in the Eastern Atlantic distribution species (16%), while Eastern Central Atlantic Oceanic Islands (9%), Guinean (8%) and Macaronesian (4%) species showed smaller values, but they were representative of the general biogeographic pattern of the canarian ichthyofauna. -

The number of records of non-indigenous fish species found in Turkish marine waters were 101 of which 89 bony, 11 cartilaginous and 1 jawless. In terms of occurrence of non-indigenous fish species in the surrounding Turkish marine waters, the Mediterranean coast has the highest diversity (92 species), followed by the Aegean Sea (50 species), the Marmara Sea (11 species) and the Black Sea (2 species). The Indo-Pacific origin of the non-indigenous fish species is represented with 73 species while the Atlantic origin of the non-indigenous species is represented with 22 species. Only first occurrence of a species in the Mediterranean, Aegean, Marmara and Black Sea Coasts of Turkey is given with its literature in the list. IV. 2007 Annotated checklist of fish and lamprey species (Gnathostomata and Petromyzontomorphi) of Turkey, including a Red List of threatened and declining species RONALD FRICKE, MURAT BILECENOGLU & HASAN MUSA SARI Abstract An annotated checklist of fish and lamprey species of Turkey comprises a total of 694 species in 155 families (including 45 species which are not native). 248 species (plus 13 intro- duced) occur in fresh water; the largest freshwater fish families are the Cyprinidae, Balitori- dae and Cobitidae. 279 species (plus eight introduced) live in transitional waters. In marine habitats, 434 species (plus 46 immigrated or introduced) are found, with the Gobiidae and Sparidae being the largest families. While there is no marine endemic faunal element in Turkey, and only three species endemic to transitional waters, the freshwater fish fauna com- prises a total of 78 endemic species (31.5 % of the total native species). 23 endemic fish species are found in the central lakes (including seven in Beyșehir Gölü, six in Eg˘irdir Gölü), 12 each in Anatolian Aegean Sea watersheds (most in Büyük Menderes River) and in Anatolian Black sea watersheds, 11 in the upper reaches of the Persian/Arabian Gulf watersheds, nine in the Anatolian Mediterranean Sea watersheds, eight in western Anatolian lake watersheds, and seven in the Asi Nehri/Orontes. Apterichtus caecus (Linnaeus, 1758), Chromogobius zebratus (Kolombatovic´, 1891), Gobius fallax Sarato, 1889, Nemacheilus insignis (Heckel, 1843), Opeatogenys gracilis (Canestrini, 1864) and Pomatoschistus quagga (Heckel, 1837) are recorded from Turkish waters for the first time. -
