I • 20 YEAR BOOK AMERICAN CLAN GREGOR SOCIETY

ADDRESS OF T~E CHIEFTAIN Roger Gregory Magruder, M .D.

Members of the American Clan Gregor Society, it is a pleasur e to address you in this historical city of Annapolis. Located here are many colonial landmarks, which stand as reminders of its role in American history ; the renown United States Naval Academy; and a very distinguished college, St. John's. Looking back over many years, it will be noted that quite a few of our kinsmen have had close association with one or more of these. So it would seem appropriate to have a gathering here. The activities of the Society have been progr essing, as witnessed by the reports made and others you witl hear. Agai n in the Spring of this year, at the inspiring ceremony "the kirkin' 0' the tartan", held at the Cathedral church of St. Peter and St, Paul in W ashington, D. C. the MacGregor tartan was presented by Mr . Harry W. Blunt, the Assistant to the Chiefta in. Last winter, in view of a depleted treasury, and with our expenses runn ing ahead of receipts, though regrettable, it was deemed advisable to relinquish the Society headquarters in order to save thi s rent money. Miss H ill kept certain files, etc., she needed in her apartment. The remainder of the Society's belongings were stored in the home of Mr. Harry W. Blunt. At the last gathering. I discussed the fact that our Year Book was deficient in certain respects, and that there was considerable room for improvement, if its standard was to be raised. A start toward this end has been made. Much more can be done. I hope all will work toward this goat. The editori al committee witl have to be strict, and have to expend much work to accomplish this. Any recom mendations or criticisms by this committee regarding articles for publication bear no personal animosity. However, please do not let a strict editorial committee deter anyone from submitting an ar ticle for publication. I am sure there are many with great literary talent. Your Chieft ain attended the annual picnic of the Virginia members of our Society on Ju ne 3, 1961. Thi s was held on the lawn under the towerin g trees of "Ravenwood", the lovely home place of Mr . and Mr s. Henr y M. Taylor, near Richmond, Va .It was a great pleasur e for about 50 members and guests to enjoy the hospitalit y of the Taylors. A sociable time was climaxed by a delicious picnic luncheon. Durin g a trip to Scotland this past summer, your Chieftain and his family had the pleasure of being guests for several days at "Edinchip", the most interesting family home of the Chief of Clan Gregor and Lady MacGregor of MacGregor. T here, we met their fine young sons, Malc olm, about 2~ years old and Ninian, who was born Jun e 30, 1961. Hi ghlights of our visit included : Att endance at the tradi tional and colorful Lochearnhead Highland Games of which the Chief of Clan Grego r was Chieftain; a delightful party at "Edinchip" ; and, entertainment by the Honorable Lady Gylla MacGregor, with an aut o sightseeing trip through part of that magni ficent country of the middle and western highlands. Our picnic lunch was enjoyed on the roadside near the ominous Glencoe with the mist shrouded peak, •

"the Shepherd of Glencoe" standing as a sentinel nearby. A rosewoo d gave l* was presen ted to the P resident of the Clan Gregor Society of Scotland, Commander Fin danus MacG rego r, as a per sonal gift from your present Chieftain. On our way to Edinburgh, by way of Dunkeld, a delicious luncheon was enjoyed in the home of Commande r and Mr s. MacGregor, and we were shown their lovely home "Ca rdney". The American Clan Gregor Society was for a second year one of the sponsors of the Grandfa ther Mountain Hi ghland Games, held annually in Jul y at Lin ville, N. C. Th e special guest thi s year was Kenneth Trist U rquhart of that Ilk, Younger, son of the 25th Chief of Clan Urquhart. It was estimated that about 4000 persons attended the games. Th e third annual Ligonier Hi gh land Games were held at Idlewild Park, Ligonier, Pa., near Pittsbur gh on September 9, 1961. T heir guest of honor was Air Commodore Aeneas Ronald Donald MacDonnell of Glengary, who is Chief of the Glengary branch of Clan Donald. While our Society was not one of the sponsors of their games, your Chieft ain sent a small contribution. Officials of both of these H ighland Games have signified to me their desire to have the Chief of Clan Gregor as guest of honor in the near future. It is my understanding that there ar e five Hi ghland Clans officially rep resented in the United States by their Clan Societies(I ): Clan Grego r, Clan Donald, Clan MacLeod, Clan MacMillan, and Clan McGain. In addition there are many other Scottish societies. These, together with the establishment of the Hi ghland Games held annually in several widely separa ted places in the United States, are ample evidence of the resur gence of the clan system in this country; a system which was destroyed in Scotland as a result of the revolut ion of 1745. This renascence in the United States, though for peaceful purposes, represents a manifestation of those principles of clanship, kinship and pride of ancestry, which those of Scottish descent inherit ed from their forefathers. This Society, which was founded on sentiment, has survived, and carried on because of thi s and because of an associa tion with the Chief's family in Scotland, and because of our projects which have evolved, and been carried th rough over a peri od of years. Th e American Clan Gregor Society has a war m place in its heart for the past, to which all honour is paid, but it also lives for the pre sent and the future. Our aims are not only sentimental, but prac tical and worthwhile. W hile these latter projects are known to most of us, especially the older members, it might be worthwhile to review a number of them in order to better acquaint our more recent members. Our Society maint ains a membership file, where a member and his or her family may be readily identified. A certifi cate of membership is issued, which further enhances the feeling of "belonging to a gro up", and also allows the member to wear the clan cr est with motto. Data concerning its members, honorin g distin guished clan folk, recordin g events of the Society, and tr easures pertaining to the Society are collected and preserved. An annu al ga thering is held. Th e record s of this event, together with genealogical material and other perti nent arti cles relating to the Society and its members are published in a Yea r Book. This is distributed

Three trust funds have been instituted, namely, Th e Endowment Fund, Medical Scholarship Fund, and Library Fund. Their purposes are very worthwhile. It is my sincere hope that our members will recognize this more, and make regular contributions, even if only a small amount, to one or more of these. Interest in Scotland is stimulated and the fostering of even more friendly relations with our kinsmen who inhabit the "giant heather clad mountains of the Lion of the North"(2), is sought. By so doing, in a small measure, the bond between our two countries is strengthened. Our Society, by making a small donation of money, along with other similar societies has been a sponsor of one of the annual highland games. These games are not only traditional, but a step forward in the promotion of athletic, musical, and dancing contests for all who enter. All of these projects contribute to the develop ment of an heritage of our Society. As the future unfolds, the opportunity for other worthwhile projects will appear. It is hoped that the American Clan Gregor Society will always be alert to see and gra sp these opportunities as they arise. By doing so, its history will be enriched. REPORT OF THE EDITOR REGINA MAGRUDER HILL Gathering of 1961 Mat erial for the Year Book was collected, typed, and the Minutes of the Gathering sent to the Chieftain for checking, with the other material being sent to Miss Evelina Magruder to be checked for sentence structure and for any errors to be caught and corrected before it was sent to the printer. An estimate on printing the book was secured. The completed material was sent to the printer, Cussons, May and Company, of Richmond, Virginia, on May 25, 1961; on July 3, 1961, the Galley Proof was received and sent to two members of the Editorial Committee, Miss Evelina Magrud er and Mrs. Irwin L. Lurnmis, to be read. and returned to the print er. On August 8, the Page Proof arrived and was checked by the Editor, and the Year Book was completed and mailed out on August 30, 1961. I want to thank Miss Magruder and Mrs. Lummis for their valuable help. Th e Office has worked with Mr. Blunt and Miss Hunter, Treasurer, in checking the membership card s so that metal plates of our mailing list could be prepared for the Addressograph Machine. Mr. Blunt, Miss Hunter and I, each have a set of these cards. It is most important to report any change of addr ess to the Clan Office at 8000 Westover Rd., Bethesda 14, Md. It is the only way that the mailing list can be kept up to date and to avoid unnecessary effort and expense REPORT OF THE HISTORIAN THOMAS GARLAND MAGRUDER, JR. Gathering of 1961 There have been reported to the Historian 8 births and 7 deaths. No marriages were reported this year but certainly there were some. It is extremely important that these record s be sent in and recorded in the Year Books of the Society. BIRTHS Chandler, David Woodward, August 28, 1961, son of Mr. and Mrs. William R. REPORT OF THE MEMORIAL TABLETS ANDMARKERSCOMMITTEE

MRS. J OH N (DOROTH Y) M cDON ALD, Chairman

In February 1961, our Chieftain, Dr. Roger Gregory Magruder, appointed the following to serve on the Memoria l Tabl ets and Markers Committee: Mrs . John G. McDonald, Chairman Miss Regina M. Hill Miss Amy Belle Hunter Dr. Roger Gregory Magruder T he purpose of the Committee for 1961 was to replace the Pine Tree which was dedicated on October 20, 1934, on St. John's College Campus in memory of Judge Daniel Randall Magruder, Court of Appeal s, 1881. The tree was named "The Daniel Rand all Magruder Pine" and the hope was expressed at the dedication that the litt le pine would grow to the size of some of the large and ancient trees now on the campus. Since the little pine tree did not survive as anticipated, the Committee on F ebruar y 12, 1961, asked Mr. Richard D. Weigle, President, St. J ohn's College, for permission for the American Clan Gregor Society to replace the tre e and extended an invitati on to him to accept the tr ee on behalf of the College at the dedication service on October 21, 1961, at 3 :30 P. M. The President graciously replied in the affirmative. Two of the commit tee, Miss H ill and Mr s. McDonald, together with Mrs. William Rand olph Talb ott and Mr s. James Mu rdock, members of the Clan, went to Annapolis on April 6, 1961, to consult with the Business Mana ger of the College as to a suitable location for the tree . After considerable correspondence and arrangement s a 6 foot Scotch pine was ordered to be planted on the campus of St. John's College. The Committee wishes to expre ss their thanks and deep appreciation to Mr . H arry Blunt who so kindly offered to have the bronze plaque made and installed at the foot of the tree. The following notation appea rs on the bronze plaque:

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE FEASIBILITY OF WRITING A SO YEAR HISTORY OF THE MAGRUDER FAMILY

REGINA MAGRUDER HILL, Chairman

The Committee was unanimous in their opinion that such a history should be wr itten, and that it should be based on the Generati on Charts alr eady worked out, and the historical mat erial on hand in the Clan Record s. There was a general discussion and the decision was that this project should be given furth er study. The Chairman asked that the Committee be enlarged for this purpose, and this was accomplished. A further report will be given at the next Annual Gathering.

A TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF

SUSIE MAY GEDDES VAN DEN BERG

We pause in our deliberati ons to honor the memory of one who was for mor e than forty years a loyal member of this Society. and for thirty-two years an almost indispensable leader. From the hand of gentle. warmhearted Mar y Th erese Hill , her aunt, she received the torch inspired by loyalty, and the challenge to carry on undimmed that bright guiding flame of pride in ancestry and tradition, that all held so dear. Through these thirty-two years of unselfish service, draining her slight physique. but sustained by her unquenchable spirit, she led the way. There were days of dire economic disaster and searing national conflict; but through all the banner she bore was not lowered. Now, she had laid down honors she cherished and labors she so unselfishly performed. To mark the breadth and the depth of our feeling of sadness in th e loss of one so dear, the following Resolutions are offered : RESOLVED that members of American Clan Grego r Society. in Annual Gathering in the city of Annapolis, Maryland, on thi s 21st day of October, 1961, record with deepest sorrow their sense of loss in the death of their beloved member and inspired leader

SUSIE MAY GEDDES VAN DEN BERG whose service through many years has been so valuable in so many fields of endeavor ; and through whose leadership and conscientious performance of duty, this Society has endured and prospered; AN DBE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that these Resolu tions be spread upon the Minutes of the Society ; and that a suitably inscribed copy be sent to the family of our member and friend, whom we miss keenly and will long remember. 32 YEAR BOOK AMERICAN CLAN GREGOR SOCIETY

RECOGNITION OF CARTER BOWIE MAGRUDER

Carter Bowie Magruder has rendered outstanding services to his country and the free world, and this has brought grea t honor to this Society, of which he has been an interested member. He has recently retired from the Army, after more than forty years of devoted and effective service, durin g which he has held all ranks from Cadet to four star General. For two years ending on Ju ne 30, 1961, he was Commander-in-Chief, United Nations Command ; Commander, United States Forces, Korea ; and Commanding General, Eighth . Hi s militar y career began in 1918, by enrollment in the Platt sburg Training Camp, from which he was commissioned a . Th e next year he was appointed to the Un ited States Military Academy at West Point. Fou r years later, he again was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artill ery. During the period between the World Wars, he had the usual assignments for a young officer; but he received more details to schools than most, because his ability was early recognized by his superiors. Before World War II he was called to Washington, where he played a maj or role in planning and implementing the important logistical support for all overseas theatr es. For his contri butions, he was award ed the Distinguished Service Medal. Lat er, while serving as Assistant Chief of Staff of Allied Forces, he developed th e support plans for the successful invasion of Southern France and Northern It aly; and for this service he was award ed the Oak Leaf Cluster to the Distinguished Service Medal. A second Oak Leaf Cluster to the Distinguished Ser vice Medal was award ed for his services in Korea from June 1959 to Jun e 1961. Prior to his command in Korea, General Magruder was Chief of Logistics, Departm ent of the Army, from 1955-1959. During the summer of 1961, the University of Maryland Far East Division conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Militar y Science upon General Magruder. T he following quotation is tak en from the citation made at th e presentation ceremony: "Because this American Officer has pursued the high call ing of service to his country, his country's allies, and now the United Nations organization, to which it has sworn allegiance ; because he has reached th e zenith within the officer ranks with four star statu s ; because he has been cited and decorated by a score of nations ; and because he has so far advanced the status of the professional war rior through education, we feel this man deserves the attention and acclaim of this university." The Honorary Degr ee of Doctor of Laws from Seoul National University was also awarded him. Other decorations awarded General Magruder include Ord er of the Crown (Italy); Legion d'Honneur (France); Croix de Guerre with Palm (France) ; Ord er of the Crown (Belgium); Order of the Coeur du Chene (Luxembourg) ; Ord er of Military Merit (Brazil); Medalha de Guerra (Brazil) ; Order of th e British E mpire; Ord er of the White Elephant (Thailand) ; Taeguk Distinguished Service Medal (ROK). The American Clan Gregor Society, at its Fifty-Second Annual Gathering, therefore recognizes and records briefly the long, efficient, and devoted service of its member, a distinguished Son of the Commonwealth of Vir ginia, General Carter Bowie Magrud er, United States Army. MEMORIAL SERVICE October 21, 1961

On account of inclement weather, this service was held in th e Colonial Room of the Carvel Ha ll Hotel, instead of St. Anne's Episcopal Church, where it had been previously scheduled. It began at 3 :45 P.M. Miss Regina M. Hill and Mr. Edward Gregor entere d bringing a lar ge gree n wrea th, which was placed on the plat form at the end of the room. As Miss Hill read the name and death date of each departed member, Mr. Gregor placed a white carnat ion on the wreath. When the last name was called-there were seven in all-and the final carnation tucked into the wreath, our Chaplain, Rev. Daniel Randa ll Mag ruder, led us in a short service from the Prayer Book. As the service was being concluded, the bagpipes were played very sof tly in the background. Memori al articles appear elsewhere in this book.

DEDICATION OF THE PI NE TREE

at ST. JOH N'S COLLEGE October 21, 1961

Thi s service was also held in the Colonial Room of the Carvel Hall Hotel as the rainy weather prevented our makin g the journey to the Campus of the College. It was called to order by our Chieftain, Dr. Roger Gregor y Magruder, at 4 :45 P .M. He introduced Mr . Richard D. W eigle, P resident of St. John's College. Our Chaplain, Rev.Daniel Randall Magruder, made the presentation of the tree in honor of his fath er, Jud ge Daniel Rand all Magrud er. President W eigle accepted the tr ee on behalf of the College. Miss Regina M. Hill read a poem, "The Pine Tree," which was composed by Mr. Caleb Clarke Magruder, a distinguished member of our Society, who is now deceased. In conclusion, our Chieftain told us about a tulip poplar tree on St. John's Campus that is over 400 years old. It has stood the ravages of many a storm: even "H urricane Hazel" that took away a number of its branches in the year 1954. He hoped that this pine tr ee plant ed to honor Judge Ma grud er would grow to be as hard y as the "tulip poplar" and live to be as old.

ST, JOHN'S COLLEGE Annapolis, Maryland October 23, 1961 My dear Dr. Magruder : Ma y I confirm what I said in my brief remarks at Carvel H all on Saturday. St. John's College is proud to accept the pine tree from the American Clan Gregor Society, presented in honor of Judge Daniel Randall Magruder of the St. John's Class of 1853. We are proud to claim Judge Magruder as one of our most distinguished alumni. It was a particular pleasure to have the presentation made by the Chaplain of the Society, Judge Magruder's son, the Reverend Daniel Randall Magruder. He and his two brothers are also alumni of St. John's. We believe that the location of the tr ee near the entrance to the Key Memorial is an excellent one. We trust that the tree wi1l thri ve there and that it will become a permanent living memorial to Judge Magruder. With high regard, Most sincerely, RICHARD D. EVENTS HELD AT THE GATHERING October 21, 1961

Th e Gathering of the Clan in Annapolis was a most delight ful affair. Carvel Hall was the headquarters hotel. The front port ion of Carvel H all, "Paca House" was built in 1763 by William Paca, one of the four signers of the Declaration of Independence from Annapolis. "Paca Hous e" has been preser ved in its original Georgian elegance. Th e impressive new porti on at the back faces the Naval Academy. Clansmen began to gather on Thursday evening to be on hand for the meeting of the Council early Friday morning. Fourteen states were represented and the Registration Desk was a very busy place. Mr s. Edith Blunt was there with material on the Clan trip to England and Scotland, and Angus "the Pig" who was fed loose change and bills three times a day. $75 was contributed in this way. During the Council meeting others present went on a guided walking tour of historic interest in Annapolis. After which a delicious luncheon was served in the Officers Club at the Naval Academy. Following luncheon ther e was a short tour of the Naval Academy grounds and buildings guided by Lieutenant De Vito, after which we were put aboard two Navy Y.P. Boats for a trip down the Severn River to the Chesapeake Bay. W e were allowed to roam over th e boats and were shown the engine room, the chart room, and the plotting courses. Th e most interesting to most of us was the electrica l equipment and Radar. Friday evening everyone went to dinner on their own and found a number of good seafood places. At eight-thirty all met at the Hotel and were "piped-in" to an assembly room by our young member Ed ward Gregor. Int eresting pictur es of Scotland were shown. Edward played his pipes on several other occasions. Th e Clan is glad to welcome this young member among its pipers. Wh en we awakened on Saturday morning it was raining hard and the wind blowing a gale. It poured all day and was still raining some at Banquet time. But this did not keep the McGregors and their guests away, and some even braved the elements and went sightseeing. Because of the rain a change had to be made in two scheduled events. The dedication of a Scotch Pin e tree in honor of Judge Daniel Randall Magruder, which had been planted on the St. John's College Campus in fr ont of the Francis Scott Key building ; and the Memorial Service to our honored dead, scheduled at St. Anne's Episcopal Church; had to be moved to the hotel dining room. A pine branch was used as a symbol of the tree and the services as planned were conducted with great success. Th e "Clan Reception" was held in the west end of the Colonial Room of Carvel Hall Hotel from 6 :15 to 7 :30 P.M. Members of the "Clan," friend s and guests remained in the main lobby, awaiting the arrival of the Hon, J . Millard Taw es, Governor of Maryland, and Mrs. Tawes, who were met at the front door by our Chieftain and Officers. Aft er they were escorted into the lobby, the receiving line formed and we had the pleasure of meeting all of our distinguished guests as we passed through. The Mackensie-Scott Pipe Band of Baltimore played bagpipe music as we assembled in the reception room. Our Chieftain, Dr. Roger G. Magruder, and a number of the guests and members were attired in their kilt s, and made most impressive figures as they moved about the room greeting each 36 YEAR BOOK AMERICAN CLAN GREGOR SOCIETY other. Many were in evening dress with some wearing tartan sashes and crests. It was a lovely and colorful reception, with an attendance that perhaps excelled all • previous ones. When the curtain partitioning the west end of the Colonial Room was raised, it was the signal that the reception was over and the Banquet beginning. Wh ile the members and guests were locating their tables and places, the Mac kensie-Scott Pip e Band of Baltimor e was marching around the Colonial Room and busily "piping-in" the Clan. Following this was the "piping-in" of the Chieftain and the Honored Guests, followed by the singing of the "Star Spangled Banner" by the Assemblage. Our Chaplain offered the Blessing. Nex t on the progr am came the "piping-in" of that ancient, Scottish dish, the Haggis. Af ter being placed on a table in the center of the room, facing the Chieftain and Honored Guests; the Rev. Daniel Randall Magrud er brandished vigorou sly a large knife over it while reciting most effectively Robert Burns' "Ode To The H aggis," after which it was served to each table. It was most interesting to observe the reactions and listen to the remarks of tho se who had never partaken of this food. In his remark s the Chieftain introduced the Honored Guests, Pa st Chieftains and others at the head table; welcomed all present and read a telegram from the Chief of "The Clan Gregor Society", Maj or Sir Gregor MacGr egor of MacGregor, Baronet, Lochearnh ead, Scotland. .. The Honorable J . Millard Tawes, Governor of Maryland, brought us greetings. The Address of the evening, "Wo rthy Scots In American History," was delivered by Mr. James W. Muir, President of the St. Andrew's Society of Was hington, D. C. It was a most interesting and humorou s one and will appear in full in the Year Book. It was truly a rare treat when Mr. Edwin Kindred, accompanied by Mr. David Parker at the piano, sang "MacGregors Gathering" and other Scott ish Songs. We were also delightfully entertained by the singing of Mrs. Chisholm Beach, with Mr. Beach accompaining at the piano and joining in the singing. One of the most beautiful songs that they sang was "Beloved" composed by Mr. Beach. It was a great pleasure to have with us again the gifted dancer, Miss Kittie Blanche. She was accompanied on the Bagpipes by our Clansman, Dr. W illiam C. Stokoe while she performed expertly and beautifully the following dances: "The Highland Flin g," "The Sword Dance," and "The Seann Triubhas" (Old Trousers). T his is at least the fourth time that Kittie has perf ormed for us at our Gatherings, and gets better every year. As usual, we were most pleased to have the entertainment rendered by "The Mackensie-Scott Pipe Band." They played a number of familiar melodies, each of which received a loud applause from the Assemblage. They made a most colorful appearance as well as giving an expert and enjoyable performance. Our clansman, Dr. William Clarence Stokoe rendered several delightful selections on his bagpipes. At the close, all persons present joined hands, formed a large circle around the dining room, and sang and old favorite, "Auld Lang Syne." • Th is was a particularl y delightful Gathering. All were together at one hotel for several days which gave more opportunity to get together to renew friendships and make new ones. Even the rain helped in this. The new members and those Y EAR BOOK AMERICAN CLA N GR EGOR S OCIETY 37 atten ding for the first time enjoyed becoming acquainted with the member s of long standing. Nex t year in Richmond we will have this same chance for togetherness in the Jeffcrson H otel. As good-byes were being said everyone added "See you in Richmond". "A ngus" will also be on hand. T hose present extend their personal thanks to Mr. Ha rry Woodward Blunt, Chairman of the Committ ee to Arrange for the 1961 Gat hering, and to all members of this Committee who worked so hard and faithfully to make this Gath erin g a success and to Mrs. Philip Ho well Lightfoot for the enjoyable musical enter tain ment which she arranged.

REMARKS OF THE CHIEFTAIN AT THE BANQUET

DR. R OGER GRE GORY M AGRUDER

Govern or and Mr s. Tawes, other distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen of the American Clan Gregor Society : Thi s, our fifty-second annual Gath ering is the first this Society has had in the great state of Maryland. When one considers that so many of our members have been natives of Maryland, or ar e descendents of Mar ylanders, it is natural that a gathering should be held in this picturesque capitol of "T he Old Line State". However, a gathering of this sort is nothing new for Ann apolis, for in the Maryland Gazette on December 3, 1728, there appeared the following news item : "Annapolis: Saturday 30 last month, St. Andrew's Day observed here by gentlemen of the Scots Society as usual. Reverend Mr . Adams of Somerset preached sermon suitable to occasion after which gentlemen of that Society, accompanied by Hi s Exce llency, the Governor Charles Calvert, Esq., and most gentlemen of the town proceeded to house of Mr . George Neilsen, where handsome entertainment was provided at the expense of the Society." Over two hundred and thirty years later Annapolis continues to provide "handsome entertainment" to the Scots, as I am sure all of you witl agree. Now, I hope you will enjoy the evening and to all I extend cordial greetings. Th ere are distinguished persons at the head table, whom we ar e very pleased to have with us and I should like to present them at thi s time. First and foremost we ar e greatl y honored and happy to have with us Hi s Excellency, the Honorabl e J . Millard Tawes, Governo r of Mar yland and Mrs. Tawes. Mr s. R. Gregory Magruder, my wife. MR. JAMES W. MUIR. President

ST. A NDREW'S S OCIETY OF WASHINGTON. D. C. October 21. 1961

ANNAPOLI S. MARYLAND

Chieftain Magruder. honored guests, members and friends of American Clan Gregor Society. I ean't begin to tell you how happy I am to be here tonight. As I stood in the receiving line and shook hands with Mrs . Macflregor, Mr. Magrud er. Miss Macfiregor, Macgrud er, et cetera. I couldn't help but think what a close-knit. what an exclusive gro up this is. How a Muir got in. I do not know but I am proud to have been included. In fact. I feel so much more fortunate than a friend of mine who wanted so badly to join a very exclusive club in Pittsburgh. H is name was San Lefkowitz. H e went to his friend Jake. who was a charter member. and he said : YEAR B OOK AMERICAN CLAN GR EGOR S OCIETY 39

"Jake, I'm wanting to become a member of your club." Jake, of cour se, told him they were very. very par ticular and it was possible someone might object. "So Vat ? Put in the application". The application was put in thr ee times, and he was blackballed th ree times. So, I am happy I was not blackballed here tonight . Wh en your chieftain asked me to speak to you tonight, he gave me no time limit nor any parti cular subject. H owever, being a Scot I promi se to be frugal with my time and yours. I know you have all heard so many stories of Scottish frugality-but I can't resist telling you my favorite : "M argar et, the wife of a Scot, was very ill and had suddenly taken a turn for the worse. Th e doctor had been called and had given a new prescription. It was necessar y that the husband go to the apothecary to get it filled. The husband was very uneasy about Margaret. He kissed her good-bye two or three times and as he was going out the door he turn ed back and said, "Margaret, if you feel that you are not going to last until I return, will you please blow out the candle?" As to the subject-I am trul y not qualified to tell of the magnificent history of the Clan Gregor. King William IV once received a deputation with these words: "If my love for you equalled my ignorance of everything concerning you, it would be unbounded" . I am afraid, however, your reputation is so great that I am not able to make the same claim, for who has not heard of the MacGregor s? Not only in Scotti sh history, but in American history as well. Remembering that a fierce pride and a fierce belief in human freedom has distinguished, not only MacGregors, but also all the Lowland and Highland Scots and the Ulster Scots, you will not be surprised at these names of Scots in American frontier history. Davy Crockett, Dave Bowie, Kit Carson and Sam Houston. Nor should you be surprised that the Little Log Cabin School established in Buck County, Pennsyl vania, in 1718, and which grew to be Pin ceton U niversity, was founded by a Scot by the name of Reverend William Tenn et. And such educational institutions as Kno x College, Illinois; McAlli ster, Minnesota ; W estminster, Missouri ; Carnegie Tech of Pittsburgh, were all founded by Scots. As a matt er of fact, the first En glish school grammer in the United States was the work of Lindley Murray, and the greatest school reader ever published was written by McGuffey. But the Scots were not only fr ontiersmen and educators, they were statesmen as well. We number nine of the signers of our Declaration of Independence and, incidentally, I suggest you read The Scottish Declaration of Independence. You will be amazed and pleased at the similarity of wording. T welve more Scots had a hand in writing our Constitution. Those immortal words "Give me liberty or give me death" were utt ered by a Scot-Patrick Henry, while another Scot, John Paul Jon es, made his fame on the high seas. And of course there were Presidents Monroe , Grant, Wilson, Jackson, Polk, Buchanan (who, incidentally, was a member of my own St. Andrews Society in Washington). Also John son, Arthur and McKinley. And there were soldiers- U. S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Jeb Stuart, Winfield Scott, Andrew Jackson, Zacher y Taylor, to name a few, as well as a very famous name in recent history-Dougla s MacArthur. And as for the arts, we claim such names as Gilbert Stuart, George Innes, 40 YEAR BOO KA MERICAN C LAN GREGOR S OCIETY

James McNeil Whistler, and so on and on and on. In pioneerin g, education, sta tes menship, religi on, indus tr y, and the Ar ts. • We glory in these names, do we not ?Then should we not pause for a moment of sober reflection to consider our job in thi s world of today ? We have the freedom for which they fought and died. \Ve have the education, the industry. Should we not have the courage to ask ourselves whether those whom we elevate to highest places are reflecting our wishes? Must we always be looking for a way out of the cold war-a compromise here, a compromise there, or should we not wage the cold war? Remember, Muni ch led to W orld War II, when a thoughtl ess worl d refused to pay attention to a blue print for world conquest "Mein Kampf" by Adolph Hitler. We are now faced with threa ts and subjected to insult s from another brute N ikita Krushchev who has outlined in no uncertain term s his plan for world domination. Shall we let thi s warn ing go unheeded ? Stand fast. Stand fa st to your Scotti sh inherit ance, for those are the thi ngs of which great and good Americans are made. And now- "W hether your name's McGregor, Magruder or MacK ay, MacAdoo or MacInross, MacFrugal or MacNie, MacNcil, MacLeod or Auchingloss, Mac Squashie or Mac l.ean, W ell, that' s just fine 'cause that's a sign the re's Scot blood in your veins.

JULIA MAY CHEWNING MAGRUDER ("'Aunt Julia") All A ngel of this So ciety

By EVELINA MAGRUDER

"J u", as she was affectionately called by the husband of her second marriage, whom she fondly called "Baby" in spite of the fact that he was six feet or more in stature, defied any display of formality. It seems fitting then that a sketch of her should likewise be informally treated. "Aunt Julia" as in later years she was known to us, her nieces and nephews, grew in fr eedom and happiness in her "I sland Home" near Milton, Albemarle County, Virginia. where she was born on October 16, 1854. H er father and mother, John W. Chewning and Mary Eli zabeth Strange Chewning. created an atmosphere of love and fri endliness for their thirteen children. Julia May Chewning, the subject of this sketch, was surrounded with happiness in place of worldly wealth; affection, kindness and hospitality in place of coldness and critici sm, and a natural gaiety which permeat ed the family life. In a home alread y overflowing ther e was always room for one more, and visitors were drawn to abide there where the atmosphere was so winning. Aunt Julia romped and played with her five sisters and six brother s, one having died in infancy. Her sweetness and vivacity were unquenchable and she was always equal to any challenge in sport smanship. Th e following episode in her youth, which has been handed down, will exemplify her dauntl ess spirit. Wh en she was visiting "Glenrnore", of which she later became the mistress, then the home of her great-uncle, and between which place and her own home there was a constant interchange of hospitality, she was being chased by her young cousins. In her eagerness to outstrip them, she tore upstairs not realizing the limitations of an upper floor. F inally she found her self trapped on the upper porch, with no means of escape except through the one door through which her pur suers were closing in upon her. Gleefully they bore down upon her, but Aunt Julia had no idea of being captured so easily. To the amazement and concern of the boys, she kicked off her slippers, embraced one of the columns of the porch, about two feet square, and skinned down its side to safety, some fifteen feet below. She thus outwitted the gasping boys, for I believe there is no record of any of them following her by that method. Th ereby she must have won their admiration and comrad eship for all time. Although in later years she was exposed to the comforts and opportunities of wealth, she never lost her capacity to enjoy the simplest pleasures and to adjust her self to the most trying circumstances, always with graciousness. So many families of that day employed tutors or governesses who lived in the home, but there was no mention of such in "Island Home" as the Keswick neighbor hood was particularly fortunate in the opportunities afforded by private schools. Aunt Juli a obtained her education from such sources, chief among which was "Edgehill", at Shadwell , just up the road a short piece from her home. As a day pupil she attended this school for girls which was conducted by the Misses Sarah and Caroline Randolph, descendents of Thom as Jefferson, and which for many years was one of the famous private schools for girls in the South. -

However, with her sparkling beauty and charm, fate did not allow Aunt Julia overtime with her books. George Wa lker Wa llace, of "Wa llaceton", Deep Creek, Norfolk Count, Vi rginia, many years her senior, at first glance recognized her charms and capabilities when she was visiting one of her elder married sisters near his home. It was her eighteenth birthday when she became his bride. T hose who could give information of this period of Aunt Julia's life have passed on, but we can readily surmise that she was a dutiful and though tful wife for the eighteen or so years of her marriage. After Mr . Wa llace's passing, with no children to be a solace to her, Aunt Ju lia was a widow only a few years when H oratio Erskine Mag ruder, of "Glenmore", her childhood playground, sought her and she became his wife on December 12, 1894. It was some ten years later when I was old enough to become aware of the sympathy, intere st and generosity she always directed towards us, the younge r generation. As the years wore on, my appreciation of her increased as I realized her modesty and utt er selflessness in the dedication of her life to the happiness of her husband. Th is husband was not one for the hospitalit y to which she had been accustomed, so her habits were cheerfully attuned to a more sequestered home life. Her horsemanship was of the best and she was a frequent companion of Uncle Rashe as he made his daily rounds of the far m on horseback. T hey were charter members of the Keswick Hunt Club, of which Unc le Ras he was one of the founder s. Consequently they were constant followers of the hounds and present at the hunt breakfa sts. They also enjoyed the social festivities of the neighbor hood and were always popular guests. W hen the automobile came in, however, Uncle Ras he resumed his habit of roaming, which had caused his younger brothers to nickname him "Rover", and took to the road once more. There was scarcely a byroad in Albemarle County, the adjoining counties, or even those farther afield that this couple did not explore. In tha t era the roads were beds of red mud and mir e when they were wet, or else a thick dust screen following any passing over them in dry weathe r, and at all times they were full of holes and ruts. Sometimes these two would disapear for days, to reappear and tell of their interesting explorations, the difficulties they had encountered, and the delays that had detaine d them on some unheard of back road. Aunt Julia entere d into these pilgrimage s with a spirit equal to the occasion. H er zest and interest were unlimited as she sat beside "Baby" in their model TFord and pierced the ruts and thickets of the back country. On one occasion when they met with a slight encounter with another car, their car was rendered incapable of locomotion, and they suffered slight inj urie s. Some kindly frie nd picked them up in a horsedra wn buggy, and brought them to the hospital in Char lottesville for attention. As Uncle Rashe was a large man, he of necessity sat on the seat with the dri ver, while Aunt Julia, who was then in her sixties, was stuffed into the section behind the seat used for storage, her feet dangling over the edge of the buggy. Wh en the equipage reached the hospital the sta ff rushed to assis t the elderly lady from the rear, but she stro ngly objected saying, "0 I get Baby, help Baby." The bewildered group looked high and low for a helpless baby in arms and when they realized the baby was Mr. Horatio Erskine Magruder, sitting lustily on the fr ont seat, weighing nigh unto three hundred pounds, they were reduced to laughter, in spite of the seriousness of the situation. Always without thought of self she subjected herself to inconvenience that others might have the advantages of the situation. 44 YEAR B OOK A M ERICAN CLAN GREGOR SOCIETY

During her life at "Glenmore" she enriched the place with the beauty of planting, and her perennial love of flowers rendered it charming with the beauty of blossom from early spring to late autumn. She enjoyed nothing more than to indulge her generous spirit by bringing a bouquet of flowers to relatives or friends , often accompanied by choice delicacies from her vegetable garden, or fruits from her orchards. H er generosity extended to her church in large measur e. The county parish of Grace Church, near Cismont, Virginia, of which she was a devoted member, relied on her constant support and deep interest. A retired minister of this pari sh always speaks of her with the greatest affection and admiration, and feels th at she, in large part, sustained the church with her active services and generous gifts. Aunt Julia was never severed from the close family life of her childhood. Every summer as long as they were able, she and her five sisters met for a reunion at one of the Springs or some other restful resort in Virginia. As the next generation came into being, they were included in these gatherings, and the teasing, bantering, and good fun that took place were truly refreshing, as well as a typical and gratifying reflection of her early family life. The American Clan Gregor Society meant a great deal to both U ncle Rashe and Aunt Juli a. As charter members they rarely missed a Gathering while Uncle Rashe was living. Aunt Juli a was interested in all the Clan activities, and she won the hearts of the members with her graciousness and charm. In 1937 when this Society made a pilgrimage to Charlottesville to the grave of Dr.Edward May Magrud er, one of the founders and its first Chieftain, and also the brother -in-law of Aunt Juli a, she entertained the members at a luncheon at "Glenmore", the boy hood home of Dr. Edward May Magruder. She was also an interested member of the Daughters of the America n Revolu tion and the Colonial Dames. After the death of her husband on the 19th of January, 1924, being childless, she continued to live at "Glenmore" with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Sally Wa tson Magruder Stewart. F requently other members of her or her husband' s family spent long periods of time with these two active and spirited elderly ladies. It was during this period of her life that, on several occasions, she accompanied her brother-in-law and sister, Major and Mrs. Edward Magruder Tutwiler, to foreign countries. On one of these trips they visited Major Tutwiler' s son, Temple, who lived in India. Whil e there they enjoyed the luxuries of a household keyed to the life of a maharajah. Another time during a trip around the world with th is same couple, Maj or Tutwiler' s health did not survive and he died while crossing the Pacific Ocean. Aunt Juli a was a source of strength and comfort to her sister on the last lap of their sad return. Regar dless of the heights and depths of her experiences, she always return ed to "Glenmore" the same sweet, unspoiled "Aunt Julia." Whil e in her eighties, with a figure as slim as a girl's, and her face expressing her beauty and rare character, Aunt Julia, as mistr ess of "Glenrnore", welcomed with the warmth and affection that had always attended her family relationships, the yearly gatherings of the descendents of her deceased husband's father, and her own great-uncle, Benjamin H enry Magruder. Not until her declining health forbade their continuance did these gatherings cease. As her strength gradually left her, all the sweetness of her lif e seemed to take over her entire being and reflect a serene radiance. Eve n the nurses, who YEAR BOOK AMERICAN CLAN GREGOR SOCIETY 45 cared for her, fell under this charm and tended her as a beloved relativ e. She passed away on November 29, 1950, at the age of 96, and her life is best summed up in the words of one of her devoted neices, Mar y Addi son Tutwiler : "T hrough loyalty to high ideals, faithfulness to her family and friends, and devotion to the Master' s cause, Aunt Juli a exemplified the charac teris tics of a trul y fine woman. Her life was beautif ul in its simplicity and gentle bearing, its broad sympathies and generosity. In her death, 'Glenmore' , the ancestrial home of the Magruder family, lost a homemaker of rare charm." In closing, from the Year Book of this Society recording the Council Meeting in Was hingto n, D. C, in 1944, on page 52, a quotati on from Mr. John Munca ster's article entitled, "ADay With Our First Chieftain", aptly proves her devotion to the American Clan Gregor Society:- " 'Aunt Jul ia' (Mrs. Horatio Magr uder ) as you all know, spent a good many years on this earth after her husband passed away, and she was most interested in the American Clan Gr egor Society. Several times when our finances got so low that bills were unpaid and receipts would never cover them she came along with a check that would just about cover the deficit. 'John Munca ster' she said 'use this to pay what we owe, but if you tell where you got it I do not know what I will do to you'. I always said an Angel met me and the officers let it go at that. At this date I am not afraid to let it out."

ROB ROY'S GREAT SWORD

The Brooklyn Eagle publishes the following statement in regard to "Rob Roy's Great Sword : "The halls of the Long Island Hi storical Society contain in their archives many a rare and curious relic of days that are long passed-mementoes of peoples and races that are known today but by the strangling pages of history and the implements of war and peace, which time has spared. On one of the desks in the librar y hall, surrounded by the quiet of the silent volumes on the shelves, rests the sword which long ago was wielded by the might y arm of the Hi ghland Chief Rob Roy, o'er many a bloody field of Scotland's heather, made famous by the pen of Scott. The uses and ravages of time have played sad havoc with the tr appings which once adorned it, but the blade and hilt are still as sharp and strong as when first buckled to the belt of the fath er of the famous chief himself . The claymore is some five feet in length, with a broad two-edged blade of the finest tempered steel, and weighs some 14, or 15 pounds. The handl e, protected by a basket helt of strongly-wrought brass, is adapted to the use of one or two hands. Along the blade are many nicks and seams, mute evidence of the war and strife through which it has passed. The sheath of leather has long ago succumbed to time, and now is torn and bro ken in many places, being held together by the brass bands alone, which form the tips and ring stay for hanging. T ied to the handle is a worn piece of leath er, upon the torn surface of which can still be plainly seen the name of its old master, Rob Roy, written with a 46 YEA R BOOK AMERICAN CLAN GREGOR SOCIETY

thick substance similar to paint or white lead. The first letter of the name has been torn away, but the remaining ones ar e plain and distinctly written in a bold, round hand. The weapon was worn and used by Rob Roy MacGregor, and has been preserved in the family of MacGregor until the present time. It was on exhibition at the Centennial in in 1876, and is now exhibited at the Long Island Society through the courtesy of Mr. J ohn Mac Gregor of this city. The claymore was also used in the war s of the Covenanters and Cavaliers by Donald MacGregor of Glengyle, father of Rob Roy". The above is copied from a clipping sent to me by Mr . John MacGregor of Edinburgh, Scotland, Honorable Secretary of "The Clan Gregor Society". It appeared in the Brooklyn Eagle of sometime in the last century-after the Phil a delphia Centennial of 1876. He wrote me as follows : "I found it among the papers I inherited when I took over the Secretaryship." A NNA L OUISE REY NOLD S, Sc ribe, A.e.G .S.

HOMES OF YESTERYEAR *"MORVEN" A BIRCKHEAD HOME

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA.

Prepared by KENDALL PALMER BIRCKHEAD

Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Birckhead, my father and mother, were among the first members of the American Clan Gregor Society. Our family were close friends of Dr. Edward M. Magruder and Dr. Jesse Ewell. The Birckheads came to this country with Lord Baltimore. My branch of the family moved to Albemarle County, Virginia, from Maryland, in the 18th Century. So far as I know we have always spelled our name BIRCKHEAD. Mrs. Yarrington is my first cousin. Dr. and Mrs. E. F. Birckhead are our grandparents. My great grandmother, Dr. Birckhead's mother, built "Morven" in the 1820's. It was sold to Mr. Matto five or six years ago. I have no picture of the house. It is in a very run down condition now. I can remember the time when the house and grounds were lovely. As you state in your letter, my grandmother Birckhead was born at "Solitude" in Madison Co., Va., in 1826. This was the home of the Graves family. I have portraits in my home of great-grandmother Graves, and her son Thomas. The Graves are related to the Thrifts. My parents, my brother, and my aunts and uncles, all at some time attended the yearly meetings of the Clan. "Texans bearing some of Scotland's proudest names rallied to their tartans here Sunday at the first statewide gathering of the clans. Four hundred ninety-three men, women and bairn s were registered and several hundred more stood in the stre et outside the Central Texas Ar ea Museum to enjoy the spectacle. Six bagpipes alarm ed the countryside with the strains of "Scotland the Brave". A line of junior high school girl s from Temple did the Highland Fling. Kilt ed representati ves of once warring clans marched amicably down the road and planted their tartans in a gaudy rank for the wind to unfurl. "Thirty-six clans, including Macfiregor, met to review the ancient traditions of Scotland in one of T exas' historic towns. Rob Roy MacGregor was on hand in his capacity of bagpiper and was dressed in tribal splendor ; also on hand was Robert Bruce, the 13 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bruce of Austin. "The meeting was originally planned as just a companionable get-together of Central Texas of Scottish ancestry, who might enjoy swapping a few tales about their Highland forebears and hearing some sentimental tunes on the pipes. But Mrs. Sterling C. Robertson, the secretary of the museum, soon began to get stacks of letters-of-intent saying they were corning. And they came." Mr s. Stephens sent several pictur es showing Rob Roy MacGregor. He is a fine looking man. Th e entire article and the pictures will be put in the Clan Scrap Book.
