He grinned his dynamite grin. "No, but you hum a few bars, darling, and I’ll pick it up."

She saw that a stained bush hat lay in the middle of the billiard table, but without bothering to move it he took the shot, the white ball flicking like a silent comet across the green . It leapt the hat, clipped the black ball and sliced it neatly, impossibly, into the top corner pocket. He stood up and rested the cue against the table.

"You seem to have a staring problem, darling. Is there something wrong?"

"Yes, you’re not dead."

"You were expecting me to be?"

He picked up his hat. Under it, curled in tight rosette, lay a speckled snake. He put the hat on his head and allowed the snake to trickle along his arm and disappear inside his tee-shirt. Amy gave some thought as to where it might finally take up residence: the idea made her faintly queasy.

"That’s Cedric," Valentine said. "I bring him along to remind me of home. Also he has some rather unusual talents."

That made her feel queasier. "Isn’t he poisonous?"

"Only when he bites you." That grin again.

"You can’t bring poisonous reptiles into the United States."

"Sure you can. Goldman Sachs does it all the time."

"There are signs everywhere at the airport."

But even with a good income from those sources, the upkeep of Cadwallader Hall was proving tough—even more so since austerity had kicked in as the UK Government struggled to reduce its national debt and pay obeisance to the financial markets and the credit rating agencies.
