Masterpieces of Photography LEE FRIEDLANDER SHOW TITLE: Dog’s Best Friend Dates: April 27 - June 15, 2019 Artist’s Reception: DATE/TIME: Saturday April 27, 2019 2-4 p.m. “I think dogs are happy because people feed them fancy food, treat them nicely, pedicure and wash them, take them into their homes.” Lee Friedlander Andrew Smith Gallery, in its new location at 439 N. 6th Ave., Suite 179, Tucson, Arizona 85705, opens an exhibit by the eminent American photographer Lee Friedlander. The exhibit, Dog’s Best Friend, contains 18 prints of dogs and their owners, one of Friedlander’s ongoing “pet projects.” Lee and Maria Friedlander will attend the opening on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 2 to 4 p.m., where the public is invited to visit with America’s most celebrated photographer and view “the dogs.” The exhibit continues through June 15, 2019. Lee Friedlander is one of America’s legendary photographers. Now in his eighties, he still photographs and makes his own prints in the darkroom as he has been doing for 60 years. In the 1950s he began documenting what he called “the American social landscape,” making pictures that showed how the camera sees reality (different from how the eye sees). In his layered compositions, what are normally understood to be separate objects; buildings, window displays, people, cars, etc., are perpetually interacting with reflective, opaque and transparent surfaces that distort, fragment and bring about surprising, often humorous conjunctions. Friedlander has been photographing virtually non-stop these many decades, expanding the vocabulary of such traditional artistic themes as family, nudes, gardens, trees, self-portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, laborers, artists, jazz musicians, cars, graffiti, statues, parks, advertising signs, and animals. -

Architectonic Forms is New York-based artist Darren Waterston’s ninth solo exhibition with Haines Gallery, and follows his nationally touring installation Filthy Lucre, a reimagining of James McNeil Whistler’s eccentric masterwork of deco- rative art, the Peacock Room. Exhibited for the first time on the West Coast, Waterston’s newest body of work continues to explore the coalescence between painting and architecture in Western art history, while reflecting the artist’s sustained interest in the allegorical, alchemical and apocalyptic. In Architectonic Forms, Waterston draws directly from devotional architectural Darren Waterston, Triptych (twilight) and Predella, both 2014 structures such as Renaissance altarpieces, confessional screens and Gothic Oil on wood panel, 80 x 131 inches; 21.5 x 83.5 inches partitions, reinterpreting them as magnetic and even menacing painterly objects. Familiar religious iconography is transformed into apocalyptic land- scapes, gestural flourishes and paint-scarred surfaces characteristic of Waterston’s work. The centerpiece of the exhibition, Triptych (twilight), 2014, is based on Matthias Grünewald’s sixteenth century masterpiece, The Isenheim Altar, and casts a spectral halo from the back of its hinged panels. At once intriguing and foreboding, the works hint at something darker lurking beneath their surfaces and demonstrate paradoxical ideas of attraction and revulsion. -

The exhibition brings together a varied array of photographs that Yanagihara has chosen for their significance to her growth as an artist. The overarching theme is one of a writer looking deeply at other artists’ creative work—specifically, photographs—as a process of learning and discovery. Hanya Yanagihara is an American novelist whose most recent book, A Little Life, was a finalist for the 2015 National Book Award and shortlisted for the 2015 Man Booker Prize and the 2016 Baileys Prize for Fiction. She has been a periodic visitor to Fraenkel Gallery for 17 years. Yanagihara remarked: The challenge for any artist, in any medium, is to find work that inspires her to re-see the things and people and places she thought she knew or understood. So much of my artistic development is directly linked to the images and photographers I encountered through years of visiting Fraenkel Gallery; the work here has, in ways both direct and not, influenced my own fiction. How I Learned to See is organized by six sections or “chapters” on the subjects of loneliness, love, aging, solitude, beauty, and discovery. Yanagihara has selected an idiosyncratic mix, with iconic and less familiar works by 12 artists: Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Elisheva Biernoff, Harry Callahan, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Katy Grannan, Peter Hujar, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Richard Misrach, Nicholas Nixon, Alec Soth, and Hiroshi Sugimoto. -

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART IN QUEENS PRESENTS LAST CHANCE TO VIEW ANSEL ADAMS CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION Exhibition Presents Critical Re-evaluation of Adams as an Artist and Photographer Ansel Adams at 100 July 11—November 3, 2003 MoMA QNS, Long Island City, Queens NEW YORK, July 9, 2003—The Museum of Modern Art presents the final opportunity to see Ansel Adams at 100, on view from July 11 to November 3, 2003, at MoMA QNS, the last venue on the international tour. Although Adams’s work has been more widely exhibited than that of perhaps any artist in the twentieth century, his oeuvre has not been fundamentally re-evaluated since his death in 1984. This centenary exhibition presents an aesthetic reappraisal of Adams (1902–1984) as an artist and working photographer by bringing together 113 of his finest photographs, represented by exemplary prints drawn from important public and private collections. The exhibition was organized for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art by guest curator John Szarkowski, Director Emeritus of MoMA’s Department of Photography. Ansel Adams at 100 has been organized with the cooperation of The Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust and the Adams family. The international tour is made possible by Hewlett-Packard. According to Mr. Szarkowski, “Ansel Adams was one of the great photographers of the twentieth century. He was also one of the best-loved spokesmen for the obligations we owe to the natural world. It has been easy to confuse the related but distinct achievements that earned him these twin honors. Goodman Gallery Hank Willis Thomas Biography Hank Willis Thomas (b. 1976, New Jersey, United States) is a conceptual artist working primarily with themes related to perspective, identity, commodity, media, and popular culture. Thomas has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad including the International Center of Photography, New York; Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain; Musée du quai Branly, Paris; Hong Kong Arts Centre, Hong Kong, and the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Netherlands. Thomas’ work is included in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Brooklyn Museum, New York; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. His collaborative projects include Question Bridge: Black Males, In Search Of The Truth (The Truth Booth), Writing on the Wall, and the artist-run initiative for art and civic engagement For Freedoms, which in 2017 was awarded the ICP Infinity Award for New Media and Online Platform. Thomas is also the recipient of the Gordon Parks Foundation Fellowship (2019), the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (2018), Art for Justice Grant (2018), AIMIA | AGO Photography Prize (2017), Soros Equality Fellowship (2017), and is a member of the New York City Public Design Commission. Thomas holds a B.F.A. from New York University (1998) and an M.A./M.F.A. from the California College of the Arts (2004). In 2017, he received honorary doctorates from the Maryland Institute of Art and the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts. SPRING AUCTION REPORT continued Peter Beard: But past who can recall or done undo (Paradise Lost), 1977 ($70,000–$100,000) found a buyer at $118,750 at Christie’s, New York City. Christie’s online Photographs sale ending June 3 totaled $2,422,125 with a 50% buy-in rate. There were a few good results, but overall this must have been a disappointment to both Chris- tie’s and its consignors. In these unprecedented times this is not a reflection of just Christie’s, but a sober reflection on the state of the photography market. Clearly safe bets like Irving Penn and Peter Beard were at the top of the heap, but at prices well below the highs of just a year or two ago. Still, it is heartening to see that Penn’s Small Trades series is getting the recognition that his other series have had.
