The case of the two ladies and the owl How a disagreement can help a dying language speak] Nile R. Thompson and C. Dale Sloat Dushuyay Research Portland, OR In this brief article we examine an episode that took place as the Salishan language Twana was about to enter the last phase of its existence and show how infonnation gleaned at that time can be meaningful in analyzing the language and related cognitive structures as they existed during the heyday of the culture. We will demonstrate that insights are captured regarding not only the process of the language's death but also regarding th~ field of ethnoscience. 1 Introduction Too often, it is thought that research conducted after a language has ceased to be used in daily activities can only be made productive by asking the most insightful of questions. A scarcity of speaker to speaker interactions in the language means that one type of valued data will no longer be available. In this presentation, we will attempt to demonstrate that valuable insights can still be gained? In order to assist in our presentation, we will bring in the observations of two noted researchers to introduce and discuss what occurred. Unknown to many, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson turned to the study of Salishan languages after they retired from criminal investigations.3 They found their earlier training and experience to be' eminently transferable to their new endeavor.4 I Thompson would like to express his appreciation to Louisa Pulsifer who taught him about Twana language and culture from 1975 until her death in 1979. -

The Pacific Northwest: Some Simple Generalities What do we mean by the ‘Pacific Northwest’ (‘Northwest Coast’)? It’s a particular geographic, cultural and linguistic area of North America. (1) Geographic Definition of ‘Pacific Northwest’ (a) Northern Boundary: Copper River delta in the Gulf of Alaska (b) Southern Boundary: Winchuk River near Oregon/California border (c) Western Boundary: Pacific Ocean (of course) (d) Eastern Boundary: Cascade Mountains (OR, WA), Coast Mountains (BC), Chugach/Saint Elias Mountains (AK) Natural Geographic Region: • Temperate Rainforest (all the way to Yakutat, AK) • Radically different in climate, flora and fauna from regions immediately beyond the eastern mountains. -

LESSON 4 - “LOCAL HISTORY” ESSENTIAL QUESTION What combination of factors both natural and manmade is necessary for healthy river restoration and how does this enhance the sustainability of natural and human communities? GUIDING QUESTION: What was the life of a homesteader like and what tools from today would make their lives simpler? LESSON OVERVIEW: During this lesson students will read three articles and create a time line by putting the events in chronological order using a graphic organizer. The time line can be used in future lessons to add later occurring events. The time line will allow students to see how events in one area can affect local, state, national and world history and visa versa. TIME NEEDED: One 45-50 minute class period MATERIALS: Journal Articles o Port Angeles - Thumbnail History o Ceremony in Port Angeles marks arrival of electricity o Clallam County-Thumbnail History Graphic Organizers o “Countdown to the Elwha River Restoration” o “Countdown to the Elwha River Restoration” teacher master PROCEDURES: 1. Have the students read the three articles: 1 Port Angeles - Thumbnail History 2 Ceremony in Port Angeles marks arrival of electricity 3 Clallam County-Thumbnail History 2. Have the students highlight all dates then fill in the graphic organizer. 3. Discuss how to combine the information from the three articles and other information into one time line. 4. Assign a journal entry to discuss one national or world historical event that affected the local area. For example, the exploration of the Washington coast brought European diseases to the native tribes thereby reducing their populations. -
Twana and the Difficult Language Belief*
Twana and the difficult language belief* Nile R. Thompson and C. Dale Sloat Dushuyay Research/ North Seattle Community College Certain Southern Puget Sound Salish speakers believed that the neighboring Twana language was difficult to learn as a second language. This belief was said to have been why few of them or other outsiders learned Twana and why the Twana were more bilingual than others in a region noted for bilingualism. A reappraisal of data shows Twana was not anomalous and that a degree of mutual intelligibility, rather than bilingualism, accounted for much of the interlanguage communication in the area. Furthermore, the precontact belief about a difficult language actually concerned not Twana but the unrelated language of a neighboring tribe. The belief was applied to Twana only after many Southern Puget Sound Salish speakers moved onto the Skokomish Reservation and the language previously labeled as difficult all but died. Following the subsequent virtual death of the Twana language, new language beliefs are emerging in the region. 1 Introduction The Twana are a Coast Salish people of western Washington State.1 Their traditional territory was one of two salt-water basins between the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges. The region surrounding their aboriginal home was rich in tribal and linguistic diversity. Most of the traditional languages of the region are members of the Salishan family. * First, we thank those whose culture we are dealing with and who graciously provided information regarding their language, namely the following late members of the Skokomish Indian Tribe: Louisa Jones Pulsifer, Joseph Andrews, Sr., and Shirley Allen Weidman. -
