4 JAK ROzuměT „POHANSKÝM RELIKTům“: FolKLÓR BALTSKÝCH ZEMÍ JAKO ZDROJ PRO STUDIUM PředKřesťANSKÝCH TRADIC STARÝCH BALTů Anglický termín folklore, přeložitelný do češtiny jako „lidová tradice“ či „lidové vě- dění“, začal být evropskými vzdělanci užíván před polovinou 19. století.1 V kon- textu historie moderní vědy se jedná o zásadní epochu, kdy vznikala v sekulární podobě většina současných humanitních oborů, včetně organizovaného studia folklóru. Evropská města prodělávala touto dobou druhou vlnu „industriální revoluce“, spojenou s modernizací, masovými imigracemi venkovské populace a pozvolnou „detradicionalizací“ v širších vrstvách společnosti. Modernizační procesy přitom neovlivňovaly pouze kulturní prostředí měst, ale prosakovaly v různých podobách i na venkov. Důsledkem toho zde začínají mizet dlouhodobě konzervované kulturní elementy, nezřídka poměrně „archaického“ stáří. Zároveň s těmito procesy však již druhá generace romantických intelektuálů mezi Atlan- tikem a Volhou usilovně studuje kulturní dějiny dílčích (obvykle svých vlastních) národů, zpravidla se zvláštním zřetelem k jejich historické genezi a identickým specifikům.2 Tradice udržované venkovskými obyvateli, do 18. století městskou inteligencí spíše ignorované či opovrhované, získávají ještě před rokem 1800 ros- toucí pozornost a následně i roli „stavebního materiálu“ při procesu „budování“ národních identit.3 1 Za původce anglického termínu folklore, který vytlačil starší latinismus popular antiquities, bývá obvykle považován spisovatel a amatérský historik William John Thoms (1803–1885). Abstract The article provides an overview of descriptions of total solar eclipses in different literature forms, rites and toponyms of Slavs. It is shown that the solar eclipse had a prominent role in the worldview of the tribes. Explanations of some terms of Slavic outlook are given with suggestions for the correct terminology. A program for further investigation in Slavic and other people’s culture is proposed. The unique statuettes of a goddess holding snakes are discovered on Crete (Fig. 1b), which date to c. 1600 BC1. The depiction of Frigg embodies a godmother with her legs wide open to give birth. In Norse mythology Frigg, Frige (Old Norse Frigg), Frea or Frija (Frija – “beloved”) is the wife of Odin. She is the mother of the three gods Baldr, Hodr and Hermodr. a b Fig. 1. Her hands are raised and she is holding two big snakes-dragons. The composition symbolizes the home/mountain of dragons (volcanic mountain). First Capitals of Armenia and Georgia: Armawir and Armazi (Problems of Early Ethnic Associations) Armen Petrosyan Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, Yerevan The foundation legends of the first capitals of Armenia and Georgia – Armawir and Armazi – have several common features. A specific cult of the moon god is attested in both cities in the triadic temples along with the supreme thunder god and the sun god. The names of Armawir and Armazi may be associated with the Anatolian Arma- ‘moon (god).’ The Armenian ethnonym (exonym) Armen may also be derived from the same stem. The sacred character of cultic localities is extremely enduring. The cults were changed, but the localities kept their sacred character for millennia. At the transition to a new religious system the new cults were often simply imposed on the old ones (e.g., the old temple was renamed after a new deity, or the new temple was built on the site or near the ruins of the old one). The new deities inherited the characteristics of the old ones, or, one may say, the old cults were simply renamed, which could have been accompanied by some changes of the cult practices. Evidently, in the new system more or less comparable images were chosen to replace the old ones: similarity of functions, rituals, names, concurrence of days of cult, etc (Petrosyan 2006: 4 f.; Petrosyan 2007a: 175).1 On the other hand, in the course of religious changes, old gods often descend to the lower level of epic heroes. Thus, the heroes of the Armenian ethnogonic legends and the epic “Daredevils of Sasun” are derived from ancient local gods: e.g., Sanasar, who obtains the 1For numerous examples of preservation of pre-Urartian and Urartian holy places in medieval Armenia, see, e.g., Hmayakyan and Sanamyan 2001). -

Transformations of the Lithuanian God Perk\nas Nijol] Laurinkien] In the article, later substitutions for the god Perkunas are analysed. Most frequently appear the names of the prophet Eliah (Alijošius) and St. George (Jurgis) as the Christian replacements diffused from the Lithuanian region, which borders on Belarus where converting to Christianity began earlier. With the fall of the old culture a great many traditions indicated the god of thunder as undergoing a complete transformation into new characters, mostly those of modern religion. Lithuanian mythology also gives evidence of similar processes. The article aims at an analysis of further equivalents of Perk'nas, which reflect the mentioned process, as well as an attempt to delineate the possible reasons for these substitutes obtained by the god of thunder and their prevalence in Lithuania. The most common substitutes of Perk'nas are the prophet Elijah (Elijošius, Alijošius) and St George (Jurgis). These Christian characters as equivalents to the god of thunder are also known among eastern Slavs. Therefore, a logical question follows on the nature of such a peculiar concurrence, which will receive due attention in the article. Lithuanian folklore often observes Elijah mentioned together with Enoch (both, as the Bible suggests, having been so close to God that they were brought to dwell in heaven when still alive). Legends about Elijah and Enoch feature them being related to the motifs of old religion and those of Christianity (LPK 3459). From the latter, associations of the mentioned characters with the god of thunder can be obviously defined: when Elijah or Enoch rides in the heaven, it thunders and lightning is flashing: Seniai, labai seniai, kada dar Adomo ir Ievos nebuvę, Dievas sutvcrc AlijošiC ir Anoką. -

WEBSTER Center for Traditional Vedanta ABSTRACT Recent archaeological evidence and the comparative method of Indo-European historical linguistics now make it possible to reconstruct the Aryan migrations into India, two separate diffusions of which merge with elements of Harappan religion in Asko Parpola’s The Roots of Hinduism: The Early Aryans and the Indus Civilization (NY: Oxford University Press, 2015). This review of Parpola’s work emphasizes the acculturation of Rigvedic and Atharvavedic traditions as represented in the depiction of Vedic rites and worship of Indra and the Aśvins (Nāsatya). After identifying archaeological cultures prior to the breakup of Proto-Indo-European linguistic unity and demarcating the two branches of the Proto-Aryan community, the role of the Vrātyas leads back to mutual encounters with the Iranian Dāsas. KEY WORDS Asko Parpola; Aryan migrations; Vedic religion; Hinduism Introduction Despite the triumph of the world-religions paradigm from the late nineteenth century onwards, the fact remains that Indologists require more precise taxonomic nomenclature to make sense of their data. Although the Vedas are widely portrayed as the ‘Hindu scriptures’ and are indeed upheld as the sole arbiter of scriptural authority among Brahmins, for instance, the Vedic hymns actually play a very minor role in contemporary Indian religion.
