4.1 General Information

adidas ROCKSTARS at the Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart is a top-class invitational competition for the world’s best bouldering athletes. The event uniquely combines elite sports with live music turning a into a true „rock show“. Bouldering is a style of rock climbing undertaken without a rope over a crash pad. In terms of coordination, acrobatics and athleticism it is certainly the most demanding discipline in competition climbing. The goal of competitive bouldering is to reach a hold that is marked as ‘top’ using as few attempts as possible. touch a buzzer, which will determine the winner in case of a hairbreadth finish. In this thrilling duel the two superfinalists need both, excellent skills and good nerves. Although the climbers cannot see each other, the beat of the music and the cheers of the crowd will reflect what is happening on the other side. The person who first stands upright on the super boulder is the merited adidas Climbing meets Music ROCKSTAR 2014 and wins 4000 Euros.

Nearly everyone has experienced the motivating power of music over our body and soul. Music can release emotions within seconds; the right beat encourages us to tap our feet or clap our hands; a familiar tune invites us to sing along. And that is not surprising: this sport is not only about strength, but also about body control and athleticism. And it is a mind game, too.

Competition climbing

Climbing has also become an international high-performance sport. Official competitions take place in three different disciplines: , bouldering and . Bouldering is also known as maximal strength discipline. The difficulties of boulder “problems” range between boulder grade 7c to 8a+ and may be compared with single moves of grade 10 or 11 lead routes. In Meanwhile there are also adidas ROCKSTARS qualifiers in Asia. On 25 May 2014, the third edition bouldering competitions, the aim is to master four to five short boulder problems in several rounds of adidas ROCKSTARS Korea took place at Namsan Tower in Seoul City with 120 enthusiastic (qualification, semi-final, final) with as few attempts as possible. The top hold, too, must be visibly held with both hands. The athlete who achieved the most tops with the fewest attempts is the winner of the competition. In case nobody is able to top a boulder problem the so-called bonus hold applies, meaning bonus points for a certain pre-defined zone the climber has to reach on his way to the top. To determine the ranking, the de- cisive factor is the maximum number of tops combined with the lowest number of attempts, followed by the number of bonus points and the number of attempts needed to reach those bonus holds.

Here is an example from the result list: Juliane Wurm had 4 tops (T) in the semifinal and needed 9 attempts (AT) for that. Akiyo Noguchi only needed 7 tries for 4 tops. If both had topped the same number of boulders with the same number of attempts, the bonus evaluation would apply – in that case Juliane Wurm would have been ranked higher, because she only needed 6 attempts (AB) for 4 bonus holds (B).

*During the final round, the highest hold controlled on each boulder problem will be recorded, as a secondary criterion for ranking.

In case more than three competitors are ranked among the top three after the first two boulders of the final round, all competitors who are in the top three advance to the third boulder of the final round. In case more than two competitors are ranked among the top two after the third boulder of the final round, based on the primary ranking criteria, the secondary criterion will be applied to select the top two competitors to advance to the superfinal. If competitors are still tied after ranking by this secondary criterion, advancement to the superfinal will be based by a “count-back” to the previous round(s). 38 39 5. GORE-TEX® //////////////////////////////////////////// Be a Rockstar Amateur Competition ///////

GORE-TEX® Be a Rockstar is a stepping-stone for enthusiastic amateurs aged 16 and over, who would like to compete at least once with the world’s best bouldering athletes. A total of 100 par- ticipants (men and women) are permitted to this contest. They compete in a jam session format, which means that they must climb 8 different boulder problems in a random order within a given time frame. The winners of the jam session receive a wildcard for the adidas ROCKSTARS pro competition and enter the semifinal round on Saturday afternoon. There they compete alongside the top stars of the international bouldering community for a place in the final.

In addition, the top three men and women of the GORE-TEX® Be a Rockstar qualification spend one afternoon in the limelight in their very own final: a“Build your Boulder” contest. Here the finalists form a team with a top athlete drawn by lot. With he help of climbing legends like Thomas Huber, Babsi Zangerl, Mayan Smith-Gobat or Ben Rueck they have to set their own route within one hour. Each finalist must climb all three self-built problems as well as a fourth boulder set by the route setters. In order to claim victory, the finalists need creativity, speed, and self-evaluation, because only by topping their own boulder problem they have a chance to win. The competitor who tops the most boulders with the least number of attempts claims the GORE-TEX® Be a Rockstar crown and will be invited to the adidas ROCKSTARS pro competition in the following year.

42 43 7. Route Setters ////////////////////////////////////////

The quality of the routes is vital for a good competition. After all, adidas ROCKSTARS wants to highlight the skills of the international bouldering elite. At the same time, the route setters try to live up to the interests of spectators and the media. That asks for instinct feel. Boul- ders have to be set in a fair way with equal opportunities for all athletes. Nevertheless they should severely test the skills of the competitors: flexibility, dynamics, strength, endurance, creativity, and orientation. In the best of cases, only one athlete masters the most difficult problem. But if the boulders are too tough, it could backfire. This is when the 68 years of competition experience of the adidas ROCKSTARS route setting team come into play.

Stuttgart’s Porsche-Arena opened in May 2006 celebrating its premiere with the German live TV show “Verstehen Sie Spaß?”. It’s the perfect venue for a diversity of events, like handball, basketball, tennis, ice hockey, boxing, music concerts or corporate events. With a capacity of 7,500 seats, the Porsche-Arena is a true “quick-change genius” and offers boundless possibilities. The Porsche-Arena was a cauldron for the Handball World Championship matches. It’s where women tennis players have had to play on ice. Obviously not directly, but the permanently installed frozen surface makes it easy to stage ice hockey matches and shows like Holiday on Ice. Thanks to its steep grandstands, all spectators are close to the action. Stars and bands are within grasp, which creates a unique atmosphere. The hall is predestined for sports. Depending on the event, different floors can be laid in the shortest possible time.

Bonus/ Zone Each boulder problem is equipped with a “zone” hold, i.e. holding of a specific handle for extra points, even without completing the problem.

Bouldering Is a style of rock climbing undertaken without a rope and normally limited to very short climbs over a crash pad (called a ) so that a fall will not result in serious injury. It is typically practi- ced on large natural boulders or artificial boulders in gyms and outdoor urban areas. The goal of competitive bouldering is to reach a hold that is marked as ‘top’ using as few attempts as possible. Therefore bouldering emphasizes power, strength, and dynamics.
