Introduction Gas was manufactured in Britain between 1792 – when William Murdock first used coal gas to light his house and office in Redruth – and 1981, when the last gasworks closed in Britain. Britain now uses natural gas, having started to convert from manufactured gas in 1967, an operation taking 10 years to complete. This profile describes the historical development of the manufactured gas industry in Britain, outlining the processes used to manufacture gas from coal and giving a brief description of other processes. It is aimed at those who have a professional or personal interest in the manufactured gas industry. 2. A Brief History of the Development of the Gas Industry Ancient Times and the Early Awareness of Gas People were aware of the existence of flammable gas in ancient times, when ‘Eternal Flames’ formed the centrepiece of religious shrines. The external flames were seepages of combustible gases from sources of gas in the ground below. The Chinese were known to have captured natural gas seepages and transported them through bamboo pipes to be burnt to heat salt pans, evaporating water to produce salt. They had also worked out how to capture the gas in animal skins so it could be stored and transported. It is, however, not until much later that the great potential of gas was realised, and a practical process to manufacture it developed. Many people from across Europe experimented with the distillation of coal, splitting it into its constituent parts of inflammable gas, ammonia rich water, tar and coke. Photograph 1. Hydrogen appears destined to be a major energy source of the future. The industry for gasification is growing, particularly for the production of electricity and chemicals from opportunity fuels, such as petroleum coke from refineries. Coal and biomass are also getting increased interests due to their promise of high efficiency and lower emissions. Methane from coal mines is also getting increased attention due not only to its environmental benefits but also to its favorable own economics.

This is being done by comparing a “minimal gas” scenario with an “optimised gas” scenario. This study is an updated version of the February 2018 Gas for Climate study, with an extended scope of analysis. The current study adds an analysis of EU energy demand in the industry and transport sectors. It also includes an updated supply and cost analysis for biomethane and green hydrogen, including dedicated renewable electricity production to produce hydrogen, and an analysis on power to methane.

With recent developments in low-cost digestion technology, communities across the world are gaining affordable access to the benefits of anaerobic digestion derived biogas. For example, biogas can displace conventional cooking fuels such as biomass (wood, charcoal, dung) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), effectively reducing harmful emissions and fuel cost respectively. To support the ongoing scaling effort of biogas in rural communities, this study has developed and tested a design tool aimed at optimizing flame port geometry for household biogas- fired burners. The tool consists of a multi-component simulation that incorporates three- dimensional CAD designs with simulated chemical kinetics and computational fluid dynamics. An array of circular and rectangular port designs was developed for a widely available biogas stove (called the Lotus) as part of this study. These port designs were created through guidance from previous studies found in the literature. The three highest performing designs identified by the tool were manufactured and tested experimentally to validate tool output and to compare against the original port geometry.

We examine whether an IGCC facility that operates its gasifier continuously but stores the syngas and produces electricity only when daily prices are high may be profitable at significantly lower CO2 prices. Using a probabilistic analysis, we have calculated the plant-level return on investment (ROI) and the value of syngas storage for IGCC facilities located in the US Midwest using a range of storage configurations. Adding a second turbine to use the stored syngas to generate electricity at peak hours and implementing 12 hours of above ground high pressure syngas storage significantly increases the ROI and net present value. Gas has been used ever since for commercial, industrial and domestic applications. Gas was first produced from coal and later on from oil until its replacement by natural gas in the mid 1970s. The conventional production of gas from coal is well documented; however, there was also another method of gas production D which is less well known, this was called “producer gas”. Producer gas plants started to become popular in the early 1880 and were in extensive use by 1910. As producer gas plants evolved from the first plant built by Bischof (figure 1) through to their demise in competition in the mid 20th century, many varied types evolved. Following Bischof’s early development of the gas producer the next major development was that of Fredrick Siemens who developed a combined gas producer and regenerative furnace in 1857.     A WOOD-GAS STOVE FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES T. B. Reed and Ronal Larson The Biomass Energy Foundation, Golden, CO., USA ABSTRACT Through the millennia wood stoves for cooking have been notoriously inefficient and slow. Electricity, gas or liquid fuels are preferred for cooking - when they can be obtained. In the last few decades a number of improvements have been made in woodstoves, but still the improved wood stoves are difficult to control and manufacture and are often not accepted by the cook. Gasification of wood (or other biomass) offers the possibility of cleaner, better controlled gas cooking for developing countries. In this paper we describe a wood-gas stove based on a new, simplified wood gasifier. It offers the advantages of “cooking with gas” while using a wide variety of biomass fuels. Gas for the stove is generated using the “inverted downdraft gasifier” principle. In one mode of operation it also produces 20-25% charcoal (dry basis). The stove operates using natural convection only. It achieves clean “blue flame” combustion using an “air wick” that optimizes draft and stabilizes the flame position. The emissions from the close coupled gasifier-burner are quite low and the stove can be operated indoors.
