I was both excited and terrifi ed at the prospect of sharing my own work with students from another art school; excited because I rarely get such an opportunity to trade in my administrative hat for my artistic one, and terrifi ed at the thought of sharing my personal motivations for—as well as the intentions behind—my work. As I conceptualized my talk, I realized that my trajectory as an artist has been largely formed by my 16 years of working at SFAI. My artistic and professional lives are inextricably linked. That paradigm structured my talk and I discussed my work in relationship to that of several of the artists that you will work with over the course of your studies at SFAI. In doing so, I felt simultaneously proud and confi dent. My fear subsided. I have no doubt that you will be equally inspired and challenged by the artists and scholars with whom you will work during the Spring 2013 semester at this unique institution. Our curriculum is interdisciplinary, offering a tre- mendous sense of liberty and a host of choices. Take advantage of that freedom as you choose your own unique course of study. Many of you may choose to take advantage of the recent introduction of Minors at the undergraduate level. This new curricular structure expands opportunities for investigation across disciplines, and reinforces our commitment to interdisciplinary study. At SFAI we believe that art making is a rigorous intellectual pursuit. We offer an education distinct from most other art schools, marked by intense inquiry and conceptual rigor. I encourage you to constantly critique and analyze your ideas, break them down, rebuild them, and always search for the best form and language with which to support them. The course descriptions in the pages of the Spring 2013 course schedule are evidence of our interdisciplinary approach to educating artists and scholars. Choose wisely, take risks, and explore all that SFAI has to offer you. Your individual trajectories are yours to create. I wish each and every one of you a successful semester. It’s that kind of book. English pairs rigorous close readings of David Hammons, Kara Walker, William Pope.L, Fred Wilson, Isaac Julien, and Glenn Ligon with an acute awareness of the burdens and blessingsof “blackness” in his probing analysis of the deeply fraught issues of identity, legacy, and history. By the way, his SFAI Visiting Scholar Lecture from 2009 is available for you to listen to in the library. Claire Daigle, Faculty Director, MA Programs The Book of Genesis Illustrated, R. Crumb Bible stories from the twisted mind of the master of underground comics. All your favorite cartoon characters like Adam & Eve, Cain & Able, Noah, etc. drawn with gusto. Crumb is still a genius at caricature, storytelling, and fantasy landscapes, and his page layouts for all 50 chapters are epic. John de Fazio, Visiting Faculty, Sculpture Homo Ludens: A Study of the Play Element in Culture, Johan Huizinga Although written in 1950, this is still a fascinating account of the function of play and its importance, along with reasoning and making, in cultural production. Highly recommended and available in the library. Frances McCormack, Department Chair, Painting The Aesthetics of Resistance, Peter Weiss Impressed by his famous, intellectually provocative play Marat/Sade, I decided to tackle Peter Weiss’s personal novel: a complex, dense, Sandra Osborne Archive, 2011 and anachronistic work. The non-Soviet socialist Weiss gives us a Unglazed porcelain, political and aesthetic program that might appear problematic to string, and found items contemporary America and Europe. After choosing a photographer, go on the web and to the library to check out books on them, read interviews, and look at every image you can that is made by them. Learn as much as you can and take notes on your sources. 3. Type your name, date, and “Project 3: Inspired by...” at the top of a Letter sized page. Then write a 2 page research paper on your chosen photographer. Be sure to include information such as where and when they were born, where it is that they did their work, what kind of camera and film formats they used, their own personal history, etc.

No, I’m the (boring) guy who sits behind his desk day-in Sarah Schug day-out, planning, story-boarding and commissioning each story, shoot and feature for others to carry-out. Fact is, I can’t remember the last time I left this office and Design interviewed someone face-to-face. facetofacedesign + pleaseletmedesign So you can image my joy when time came for our yearly photography special. Finally, I’d be able to get into the thick of it again. Interviews, studio visits, round Writers tables, portfolio views – the lot. Photography, you see, is my thing here at Word Felicia Atkinson HQ, and I got more than my money’s worth over the last few weeks. And what an Sabine Clappaert exciting last few weeks it has been, especially for Belgian photography.     Desde hace ya cinco años, Madrid cuenta con un Festival Internacional de Documentales que atrae a un gran número de espectadores y es, a la vez, foro y lugar de encuentro para los profesionales del género. Un género, el cine de no ficción, que abarca una enorme variedad de propuestas, desde las puramente estéticas e innovadoras, hasta las que promueven enfoques de mayor calado, que evidencian las más variadas realidades sociales, culturales, artísticas o medioambientales. 6 En su edición de 2008, y como ya es habitual, Documenta tiene su principal foco de interés en su Sección Oficial. En ella, junto a las proyecciones de películas en sus dos formatos, corto y largometraje, en los que prima la originalidad, habrá un concurso de reportajes, que valorará especialmente el tratamiento y la presencia de la actualidad. Pero, además, el festival se nutrirá de sus siempre enriquecedoras secciones informativas. En ellas, destaca el homenaje a la figura de Michelangelo Antonioni, el enigmático cineasta, escritor y pintor italiano, célebre autor de la trilogía La aventura, La noche y El eclipse, que tanto dio que hablar a los cinéfilos españoles a comienzos de los sesenta, y sorprendente creador, más tarde, de Blow-up. Antonioni fue un gran innovador del cine y cultivó el género documental, a pesar de que su obra en este campo es prácticamente desconocida. Para tratar de rescatar del olvido esta valiosa faceta, se proyectarán algunos de sus trabajos. Muy vinculado a la mejor etapa de Antonioni, se ha programado también otro ciclo retrospectivo, Recuerdos del 68, con películas que evocarán los movimientos sociales y políticos del período, así como los sucesos de Mayo del 68 en París, coincidiendo con su 40 aniversario.

    The Vicinity of Narrative On his work desk in Oakland, California, Todd Hido arranges and rearranges a stack of his photographs alongside vintage shots that he found at a yard sale. These are the origins of Excerpts from Silver Meadows: a singular order that Hido makes out of his special brand of chaos. ‘When viewers arrive at a book of photographs, they’re expecting something that makes sense,’ he tells me. ‘But I think ambiguity is an incredibly important and powerful tool.’ So here he is, connecting disparate images to give shape to a precise uncertainty. The end result will, of course, be this book, made up of many different elements and layers — different breeds of photographs that Hido has taken over the years, yes, but also pulp fiction covers and snapshots Hido took when he was twelve years old. These are asides not found in any of his previous, tightly edited monographs. Hido is deep in the work process when I ask him if this ‘departure’ is intentional: this incorporation of archival material and private moments captured on film years ago, or by someone else entirely. ‘It’s actually not a departure at all,’ he tells me. ‘I’ve been working like this since I first got to graduate school. Even then, it was my way of experimenting more.’ Still, he didn’t put these unusual combinations out into the world until three years ago, when he made ‘a little ’zine-like book published in Japan called Nymph Daughters.’ The book integrated, among other unexpected images, heart-shaped, hot pink spray-painted drips layered over seedy found personal ads.

The photographer is supposed to find the subject following too many signs. Those signs are often inside us, many of them come from our past. How is it possible to recognize those signs? Is it possible to explain how every feeling, every memory, can be put together in one single image? A firstly let me start out by saying that I completely agree that the signs you are looking for, many of them do come from your past. But no, I don't think that's possible to put it all together in one single image. If it were then this would not be a lifelong pursuit? A body of work does not even do it sometimes. I have noticed that within my own practice that often adding a genre, or another way of taking pictures, often adds an extra layer that complicates things more deeply. I believe that all those signs from your past and all those feelings and memories certainly come together, often subconsciously, and form some kind of a fragmented narrative. Often you're telling your own story but you may not even know it. One of my most valuable bits of feedback for me came from an art therapist that I did an independent study with when I was in graduate school. He taught me that I was on the right track with my subject matter and gave me the confidence to pursue it.
