Ce partenariat se construit chaque année en complicité avec les Rencontres d’Arles et prend la forme d’expositions, de rendez-vous et de rencontres avec des photographes et acteurs de la photographie. A ce titre, chaque année Olympus propose à un photographe de réaliser un travail en carte blanche avec l’un de ses derniers appareils. C’est ainsi qu’après Michael Ackerman et Alex Majoli, Todd Hido a répondu avec plaisir à cette proposition pour 2018. La Galerie Particulière est heureuse de vous annoncer que la Carte blanche Olympus 2018 a été confiée au photographe américain Todd Hido qui a créé spécialement de nouvelles oeuvres avec le dernier boîtier de la gamme Olympus. Elles seront présentées au Palais de Luppé lors des Rencontres de la Photographie d’Arles. Principalement connu pour ses images cinématographiques de pavillons de banlieue la nuit, ses paysages en bordure de route et ses portraits chargés d’émotion, Hido décrit son approche de la photographie comme “un vacillement entre l’amour du documentaire et le souhait d’exprimer des sentiments à travers les photos”. En vingt-cinq ans, Hido a atteint une renommée internationale pour ses images de lieux et de sujets qui, lorsqu’ils sont entremêlés, sondent – tout en jouant avec elles – ces notions intrinsèquement humaines que sont le manque, la perte, la mémoire et la narration. Cette nouvelle série réinterprète le portrait photographique avec les techniques d’éclairage propres à la peinture classique européenne ; Hido y explore une déclinaison de lumière nordique sans ombre ainsi qu’un clair-obscur plus ciselé. “Il y a dix ans, j’ai visité le sud de la France. Durant mon séjour, j’ai compris que les volets étaient pensés pour plonger une pièce dans l’obscurité complète, afin de limiter la chaleur estivale et de faciliter les siestes. Je viens du Midwest, aux États-Unis, et c’était nouveau pour moi, se souvient Hido. La première fois que j’ai vu une silhouette inondée de lumière dans un océan de noirceur, j’ai pensé aux grands maîtres, et je me suis dit qu’ils avaient peut-être été inspirés par des conditions similaires.” Les recherches de Hido autour de cette luminosité ont abouti des années plus tard, lorsqu’il a monté son studio. “Je l’ai conçu comme un espace sombre pouvant être ouvert à des sources de lumière rigoureusement contrôlées. Quand j’ai commencé à prendre ces photos, j’ai compris qu’elles traitaient de la simplicité – la lumière sur la peau, le tissu, la beauté à l’état pur de cet outil silencieux, et pourtant si profond.” Commissaire de l’exposition : Fannie Escoulen Exposition produite par Olympus La Galerie Particulière is delighted to announce that the «Carte blanche» Olympus 2018 has been awarded to American photographer Todd Hido. A new body of work has been especially created with the very latest Olympus camera. The artwoks will be presented at Palais de Luppé at the occasion of Les Rencontres de la Photographie, Arles. Known primarily for his cinematic night shots of suburban houses, roadside landscapes, and emotionally charged portraits, Hido describes his approach to photography as “vacillating between a love of documentary and a desire to express myself emotionally with images”. Over the course of twenty-five years Hido has gained international recognition for his photographs of places and subjects that when weaved together explore and play with innate human ideas of longing, loss, narrative, and memory. This latest series reinterprets his photographic portraits in the lighting style of European classical paintings. Exploring a range of shadow-less Northern light and a more chiseled chiaroscuro method. «Ten years ago, I visited the South of France. It was during my stay there that I realized in order to mitigate the summer heat and aid with afternoon naps, that the shutters were designed to completely black out a room. Coming from the Midwest of the United States, I had never seen this before,” recalls Hido. “The first time I opened the shutters and saw a person illuminated in a field of darkness reminiscent of that classical painterly way, it struck me that these may have been the conditions for which earlier European painters were inspired.” Much of Hido’s search to create his own variation of this manifested years later when he began to build his own studio. “I designed it as a dark space that could be opened up to carefully controlled sources of natural light. Elles donnent une sensation de vacuité de ce monde mi-factuel, mi-fictionnel.     The Vicinity of Narrative On his work desk in Oakland, California, Todd Hido arranges and rearranges a stack of his photographs alongside vintage shots that he found at a yard sale. These are the origins of Excerpts from Silver Meadows: a singular order that Hido makes out of his special brand of chaos. ‘When viewers arrive at a book of photographs, they’re expecting something that makes sense,’ he tells me. ‘But I think ambiguity is an incredibly important and powerful tool.’ So here he is, connecting disparate images to give shape to a precise uncertainty. The end result will, of course, be this book, made up of many different elements and layers — different breeds of photographs that Hido has taken over the years, yes, but also pulp fiction covers and snapshots Hido took when he was twelve years old. These are asides not found in any of his previous, tightly edited monographs. Hido is deep in the work process when I ask him if this ‘departure’ is intentional: this incorporation of archival material and private moments captured on film years ago, or by someone else entirely. ‘It’s actually not a departure at all,’ he tells me. ‘I’ve been working like this since I first got to graduate school. Even then, it was my way of experimenting more.’ Still, he didn’t put these unusual combinations out into the world until three years ago, when he made ‘a little ’zine-like book published in Japan called Nymph Daughters.’ The book integrated, among other unexpected images, heart-shaped, hot pink spray-painted drips layered over seedy found personal ads.

    © Todd Hido, 1951, 1997 from "Houses at Night" 1. Shooting a specific image often means to complete a complex process after a deep investigation. The photographer is supposed to find the subject following too many signs. Those signs are often inside us, many of them come from our past. How is it possible to recognize those signs? Is it possible to explain how every feeling, every memory, can be put together in one single image? A firstly let me start out by saying that I completely agree that the signs you are looking for, many of them do come from your past. But no, I don't think that's possible to put it all together in one single image. If it were then this would not be a lifelong pursuit? A body of work does not even do it sometimes. I have noticed that within my own practice that often adding a genre, or another way of taking pictures, often adds an extra layer that complicates things more deeply. I believe that all those signs from your past and all those feelings and memories certainly come together, often subconsciously, and form some kind of a fragmented narrative. Often you're telling your own story but you may not even know it. One of my most valuable bits of feedback for me came from an art therapist that I did an independent study with when I was in graduate school. He taught me that I was on the right track with my subject matter and gave me the confidence to pursue it.

In “A,” the artist leads the viewer on a rambling tour through the beautiful and ruined streets of the American Rust Belt. The cast of characters, both human and animal, is portrayed with compassion and respect by this native son of modern and contemporary art contemporary and modern Buffalo, New York. The cities to which Halpern is drawn—Baltimore, Cincinnati, Omaha, Detroit— share similar histories with his hometown, and in his post-apocalyptic springtime, all forms of life emerge and run riot. The photographs represent the artist’s ongoing investigation of locations and people that fly under the radar. November 25, 2017–January 7, 2018 AUSTIN, Texas—September 21, 2017—The first exhibition to present photography of the iconic American road trip will be on display at the Blanton Museum of Art at The University of Texas at Austin from November 25, 2017–January 7, 2018. The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip considers this subject matter as a genre in and of itself, and tells the stories of several photographers for whom the American road was muse. The exhibition presents more than 100 images by photographers such as Robert Frank, William Eggleston, Lee Friedlander, Alec Soth, and Justine Kurland, who explored America as a subject by capturing images of the people, activities, and views found along its highways. “The love for the American road trip—exploring our diverse landscape and discovering everything from national parks to local diners along the way—has been deeply imbedded in our culture for generations. The Open Road highlights how renowned photographers have captured that quintessential American experience,” notes Blanton Director Simone Wicha. “Photography is an important medium for many artists, and the Blanton is committed to the presentation of this art form. We’re delighted to be collaborating with Aperture to share this captivating work with the Austin community.” The American photographer Stephen Shore once declared, “Our country is made for long trips.” While the myth of the Western frontier had long engaged artists, and photographers including Walker Evans and Edward Weston immortalized their travels through the United States in the 1930s and 1940s, the American road trip gained new prominence in literature, music, movies, and photography after World War II.
