Abstract OBJECTIVE.—A systematic review of quasi-experimental studies in the field of infectious diseases was published in 2005. The aim of this study was to assess improvements in the design and reporting of quasi-experiments 10 years after the initial review. We also aimed to report the statistical methods used to analyze quasi-experimental data. DESIGN.—Systematic review of articles published from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2014, in 4 major infectious disease journals. METHODS.—Quasi-experimental studies focused on infection control and antibiotic resistance were identified and classified based on 4 criteria: (1) type of quasi-experimental design used, (2) justification of the use of the design, (3) use of correct nomenclature to describe the design, and (4) statistical methods used. RESULTS.—Of 2,600 articles, 173 (7%) featured a quasi-experimental design, compared to 73 of 2,320 articles (3%) in the previous review (P<.01). Moreover, 21 articles (12%) utilized a study design with a control group; 6 (3.5%) justified the use of a quasi-experimental design; and 68 (39%) identified their design using the correct nomenclature. -

Enterobacteriaceae 1.1. Définition Les entérobactéries sont une famille très hétérogène pour ce qui est de leur pathogénie et de leur écologie. Les espèces qui composent cette famille sont en effet soit parasites (Shigella, Yersinia pestis), soit commensales (Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella sp), soit encore saprophytes (Serratia sp, Enterobacter sp). 1.2. Habitat et pouvoir pathogène Le domaine des entérobactéries commensales ne se limite pas à l’intestin : on les trouve aussi dans la cavité buccale, au niveau des voies aériennes supérieures et sur les organes génitaux. Les entérobactéries sont présentes dans le monde entier et elles ont un habitat très large : eau douce, eau de mer (Alterococcus agarolyticus), sol, végétaux, animaux et elles peuvent contaminer des denrées alimentaires. Certaines espèces sont responsables de diarrhée et/ou d'infections opportunistes (infections urinaires, infections respiratoires, surinfections des plaies, septicémies, méningites...). 1.3. Répartition en genres Au sein des entérobactéries, on distingue de nombreux genres (Shigella, Escherichia, Enterobacter, Serratia, etc…) (tableau 3-1 et 3-2). La distinction entre les genres se fait par l'étude des caractères biochimiques dont les plus importants sont : fermentation du lactose, production d'indole, production d'uréase, production d'acetoïne (réaction dite VP+), utilisation du citrate, désamination du tryptophane. 1.4. Caractérisation des espèces Au sein de chaque genre, on individualise des espèces, par l'étude des caractères biochimiques ou antigéniques. Les entérobactéries possèdent toutes des antigènes de paroi (« somatiques ») ou antigènes O. The approach taken is much like that used in a scientific experiment, with high priority given to the transparency and reproducibility of the methods used and to handling all evidence in a consistent manner. Early career researchers may find themselves in a position where they decide to undertake a systematic review, for example it may form part or all of a PhD thesis. Those with no prior experience of systematic review may need considerable support and direction getting started with such a project. Here we set out in simple terms how to get started with a systematic review. Discussion: Advice is given on matters such as developing a review protocol, searching using databases and other methods, data extraction, risk of bias assessment and data synthesis including meta-analysis. Signposts to further information and useful resources are also given. Conclusion: A well-conducted systematic review benefits the scientific field by providing a summary of existing evidence and highlighting unanswered questions. For the individual, undertaking a systematic review is also a great opportunity to improve skills in critical appraisal and in synthesising evidence. -

Scopel, Ola Olapade, Steve Gradus, Ajaib Singh, and Gerald Sedmak Abstract: Ring-billed (Larus delawarensis Ord, 1815) and herring (Larus argentatus Pontoppidan, 1763) gulls are predom- inant species of shorebirds in coastal areas. Gulls contribute to the fecal indicator burden in beach sands, which, once transported to bathing waters, may result in water quality failures. The importance of these contamination sources must not be overlooked when considering the impact of poor bathing water quality on human health. This study examined the occurrence of human enteric pathogens in gull populations at Racine, Wisconsin. For 12 weeks in 2004 and 2005, and 7 weeks in 2006, 724 gull fecal samples were examined for pathogen occurrence on traditional selective media (BBL CHROMagar-Salmonella, Remel Campy-BAP, 7% horse blood agar) or through the use of novel isolation techniques (Campylobacter, EC FP5-funded CAMPYCHECK Project), and confirmed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for pathogens commonly harbored in gulls. An additional 226 gull fecal samples, collected in the same 12-week period in 2004, from a beach in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, were evaluated with standard microbiological methods and PCR. Five iso- lates of Salmonella (0.7%), 162 (22.7%) isolates of Campylobacter, 3 isolates of Aeromonas hydrophila group 2 (0.4%), and 28 isolates of Plesiomonas shigelloides (3.9%) were noted from the Racine beach. No occurrences of Salmonella and 3 isolates of Campylobacter (0.4%) were found at the Milwaukee beach. -
