The English Springer

Club of Long Island, Inc.

April 2015 Newsletter Letter from the Editor It’s been a loooong winter here in the northeast. We Long Islanders are still waiting for the daffodils to bloom and sway in the warmer breezes…but it will come. With spring comes the beginning of the local show season. Just here on Long Island, we have our own obedience and rally trial, Ladies Kennel Association of America’s shows, Long Island Kennel Club show, and Riverhead Kennel Club’s all breed obedience trial. And that is just the month of May! Now is the time to reconnect with fellow dog lovers and springer aficionados. Consider helping out at our obedience and rally trials, attending our club meeting with our designated specialty at Ladies, or, even better, entering those trials and shows! Please contact me at [email protected] if you are interested in helping out. The dog community really pulls together when the going gets rough. Our scheduled judge for the trials is very ill, and at the last minute we were trying to attain replacement judges. Within a few days, we were successful and the show will go on. Enjoy your spring(ers)! Gail

Farewell, my Friend Edna Randolph

It is with a heavy heart that I report that Edna Randolph passed away. It is so sad when we lose an icon of the sport of purebred dogs, and a major breeder of English Springer going back to the 40s...Edna attended the original Morris and Essex shows, won the breed many times at Westminster, and was one of the founders of the Welsh Springer Spaniel Club of of America, helping to establish Welshies in the United States. She did all this under her kennel name of Randhaven. When Edna retired the Randhaven Kennels, she dedicated her love of springers to rescue. Over the years, Edna fostered and adopted dogs that were difficult to place, either for their age, their quirks, or health issues. She loved these dogs, who touched her heart, as much as she loved the dogs she bred. There will be many wagging tails to greet Edna as they reunite once again. Tom Longnecker

Another springer great also passed away. We bid farewell to long-time member and field trialer and judge, Tom Longnecker. Tom was instrumental in starting ESSCLI’s long history of field trials, hunt tests, and tests. Many of us have very fond memories of Tom and his wife Jean guiding novice and experienced field dogs out at Calverton and the Northfolk Preserve. In his memory, one of Tom’s friends , Vince Paladino, tells us:

I knew Tom, trained with him, hunted with him, and travelled with him to trials. Tom was very dedicated to his dogs. He was respected in the English Springer Spaniel and Clubs. Few people in the Spaniel club knew he was a founding member of the beagle club in Calverton. I remember, one time he called me and asked if I could help him find a dog. A beagle got out and was gone for most of the day. He was getting frustrated. After about an hour maybe two hours later we found the beagle. Tom put him in the car and drove him back to the house and kennel. The dog was secure. He said something like, "..... I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight knowing my dog was out....". He said we earned ourselves a good drink and we had two. Tom absolutely loved his dogs AND caring for them.

Tom looked after me as a novice Springer person. He took me under his wing. He invited me to the Northfork Preserve he was a founding member, where I ran my Spaniel and she captured the "ribbon bird" her first time out beating all other dogs. Tom was as pleased as I was, standing in the back I looked up and with pipe in one hand he gave me a thumbs up with his other hand he had a big smile on his face because the only springer beat out all the rest of the breeds.

Carol and Kevin Dolan have an empty spot in the kennel and in our hearts. We lost Lacey to a valiant but short battle with chronic kidney failure. Carol and I will miss her because she was a pleasure. She filled so many roles and tasks in the daily operation of the kennel and the family.....she leaves this big hole in our hearts! I should have no regrets but for this little lady I wish I had more time to explore the fields and chase birds and show ring judges what a real field bred looks and feels like.

A Little of This, A Little of That!

AKC BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVES OBEDIENCE REGULATION CHANGES Effective DECEMBER 1, 2015

In the summer of 2014, AKC Companion Events held Advisory Committee meetings to review more than 1,200 suggestions from the fancy for the improvement of the sport. After the meetings, a poll was released to the fancy/judges/clubs/Delegates for a review and vote. As a result of the polling and review by the staff, the recommendations for change were presented to the AKC Board of Directors for their review in February/March 2015.

The AKC Board has approved 75 changes/additions to the Obedience Regulations effective December 1, 2015.

To view the regulation changes, please click on the link below.

Obedience Regulation Changes

The above link will take you to the AKC website where there are three documents posted:

Obedience Regulations & Judges Guidelines Changes – showing the items that were struck from and added to the regulations. 3. A Table of Contents for the Regulations – identifying the flow of how the new regulation booklet will be published.

In general, these regulation changes are meant to clarify and bring greater consistency to current judging practices and event requirements, modify administrative procedures to make events more enjoyable for participants and represent a balanced attempt to positively impact the sport. 3 Spring Veggies That are Good for Your Dog! by VetDepot on March 23, 2015

Most people consider canines more carnivorous than veggie loving, but the fact is that adding some fresh vegetables to your dog’s diet can really rev up his nutrient consumption. You might be surprised how willing your sweet pup is to gobble up a fresh vegetable as a snack. Below are three spring vegetables that are safe to give your dog as treats!

1. Green Beans: These crispy spring veggies contain a lot of good stuff for dogs including omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium iron, potassium, and beta carotene. So, don’t hesitate to use this nutritional powerhouse of a vegetable as a treat!

2. Spinach: It may be a little difficult to get some dogs to eat raw spinach, but if you can, they’ll surely reap the benefits. Spinach packs a healthy punch of iron and is also known to help ward off inflammatory and cardiovascular issues. Try sneaking a little of this leafy green in with your pup’s wet food.

3. Asparagus: Packed with iron, potassium, fiber, and plenty of important vitamins, asparagus is a great choice for your dog at snack time. Just be sure to cut the asparagus up into bite-sized pieces for easy digestion.

What Not to Do on a Dog Walk by VetDepot on March 20, 2015

Dog walks are a great opportunity to give your dog some much needed exercise, work on training, and spend some quality time together. Keep the experience a positive one by sticking to the following guidelines:

1. Don’t let your dog approach another dog without asking: Your pup may get along with other doggies without any issues, but this isn’t the case for all canines. Always ask before allowing your dog to say hello to a strange dog.

2. Don’t forget those poop bags: This one is common courtesy! Keep your neighborhood, park, or other communal space safe and clean so that others can enjoy their walks too.

3. Don’t let your dog walk you: Walking a well trained dog is a much more pleasant experience than walking an unruly canine, but training takes time and commitment. Be consistent and consult with a behaviorist if necessary.

4. Don’t space out: Wearing headphones or tuning out can be dangerous for you and your canine companion. Stay in the moment so that you can keep a look out for speeding cars, off-leash dogs, and other potential hazards. Opting for a traditional dog leash instead of a retractable leash will also help you keep an eye on your pup.

Remember, spring walks also put your pup at risk for fleas and ticks. Speak with a vet about the best flea and tick control option for your dog before venturing outdoors.

There’s a budding artist among us. Who needs a camera when Grace Kraft is there to capture the action. Here is her drawing of Piece at an agility trial. The pink bow is optional attire for agility. We suggest you check the AKC regulations prior to adorning your dog.

Rescue News from Gini Titterton…Thanks!

Snoopy, adopted by Carol and Norman Siegel on 10/22/2014.

Frannie, adopted by Bessie and Robert Scripps on 11/1/2014.

Dani, a black and white 7 yr old girl trained as a field springer, was adopted in March 2015 by Marge Silverthorn, President of ESSCLI. Marge went to the wake of Dani's owner and came home with her. She joins Marge's kitten, Cali, and 6 month old Casey, a very handsome ESS boy. She says that Dani "makes the energizer bunny look like a turtle!"

Emma, 2 years old, was adopted on 3/16/2015 by Tammy Layler and Steve Taves of Ellsworth NH. Their 9 year old ESS, Henry, also an ESSCLI rescue, welcomed Emma to their home with open paws. It was obvious to her owner that Emma needed company during the day and did the selfless thing giving her up to a home where she would have company all day long.

Trump was adopted on 12/22/14 by Michael Haddad. Unfortunately, none of us knew that Trump would need so much medical care when Michael rescued him. Trump was underweight by 10 lbs, suffered from broken teeth, infected ears, a high blood count and tapeworm. He wasn't healthy enough to be neutered at that time. Michael stepped in to literally save Trump taking care of all his medical needs never commenting on Trumps poor medical condition. That is one special adopter. And now Trump is on the mend, and in a very loving home. Here he is with Michael's daughter, Kayla.

Trixie, a 7 year old ESS, who was also rescued/fostered by the Doolin family. Here they are with LeeAna, Trixie's chosen person of the Doolin family, during the snow squall that occurred at the time of placement. Even the snow couldn't keep Lurena from getting her new pal, Trixie. According to Lurena, she is the most perfect, polite springer, so well trained by the Doolins. She even received pages of instructions from the Doolin children, to help her make Trixie feel right at home.

George, a very energetic liver and white 3 year old, was in need of a home, when his owner passed away in January 2014. The Doolin family took in 3 springers, Monique, 12 and George's mom, Trixie, 7, and George. They were added to their 6 children and 2 ESS and another dog, too. Ellen Doolin contacted us in December. She felt it best for George to be placed in a home where he would have a springer pal to help use up all that energy. Lucky for George, Cassie Ardito, an ESS adopted last March, was in need of just such a playmate. Dona and Peter brought Cassie to meet George and that was it. A match made in heaven. Thank you Cassie for making sure George gets his exercise. And thanks to the oolin family for taking care of George for all that time.

Arnold (named after Arnold Schwarzenegger), a 9 year old Welsh Springer was adopted on 9/20/2014 by Jack Wolter of NH. Arnold's loving owner was transferred overseas and unable to take him with him. It was a happy ending for all.

Harry, adopted on 9/28/2014 by The Gagion family. Harry's owner developed some medical issues which would not allow him to take care of him for some time. Harry got out of the hustle and bustle of city life where he can now go for peaceful walks and learn to be more socialized.

Milo, a 9 mo old pup was adopted on 1/24/2015 by the Irwin family. Full of spunk and energy, Milo needed a new home due to his owner's medical issues which made it difficult for him to attend to his needs. The Irwin family, who had previously adopted 2 Springers from us were ready and waiting. Milo now has the attention of the entire family.

Troy, adopted 10/4/2014 by Shelby and Alan Gaudio in PA is a spry 2 year old who was being trained for hunting. Turns out Troy was gun shy and too energetic for his original family.

A big thank you to all of our rescue volunteers and to those of you who donate.
