Taken from Ref. ( 5 ) . HISTORY OF THE WELSH SPRINGER SPANIEL The Welsh Springer Spaniel is described in the standard as a very ancient and distinctive breed of pure origin. Spaniels are considered one of the oldest dogs known to man. They appear to have been in Europe for centuries and are thought to have originated in Spain and arrived in England during the Dark Ages. It is speculated that red and white spaniels were in Wales in the 6th century. Red and white tracking dogs were recorded in Wales in the 11th century in a passage in the Mucinogen, a book describing Welsh folklore. The term Spaniel was first used by Chaucer (1340-1400).

  • Sporting Group Study Guide Naturally Active and Alert, Sporting Dogs Make Likeable, Well-Rounded Companions
Sporting Group Study Guide Naturally active and alert, Sporting dogs make likeable, well-rounded companions. Remarkable for their instincts in water and woods, many of these breeds actively continue to participate in hunting and other field activities. Potential owners of Sporting dogs need to realize that most require regular, invigorating exercise. The breeds of the AKC Sporting Group were all developed to assist hunters of feathered game. These “sporting dogs” (also referred to as gundogs or bird dogs) are subdivided by function—that is, how they hunt. They are spaniels, pointers, setters, retrievers, and the European utility breeds. Of these, spaniels are generally considered the oldest. Early authorities divided the spaniels not by breed but by type: either water spaniels or land spaniels. The land spaniels came to be subdivided by size. The larger types were the “springing spaniel” and the “field spaniel,” and the smaller, which specialized on flushing woodcock, was known as a “cocking spaniel.” ~~How many breeds are in this group? 31~~ 1. American Water Spaniel a. Country of origin: USA (lake country of the upper Midwest) b. Original purpose: retrieve from skiff or canoes and work ground c. Other Names: N/A d. Very Brief History: European immigrants who settled near the great lakes depended on the region’s plentiful waterfowl for sustenance. The Irish Water Spaniel, the Curly-Coated Retriever, and the now extinct English Water Spaniel have been mentioned in histories as possible component breeds. e. Coat color/type: solid liver, brown or dark chocolate. A little white on toes and chest is permissible.

Downloaded from provided by Ghent University Academic Bibliography Paper Paper Clinical presentation, diagnostic findings and long-term survival in large breed dogs with meningoencephalitis of unknown aetiology I. Cornelis, H. A. Volk, S. De Decker Although several studies indicate that meningoencephalitis of unknown aetiology (MUA) might affect every dog breed at every age, little is known about clinical presentation, diagnostic findings and long-term survival in large breed dogs. The aim of this study was therefore to compare the clinical presentation, diagnostic findings and long-term survival between large and small/medium breed dogs diagnosed with MUA. One hundred and eleven dogs met the inclusion criteria. 28 (25 per cent) dogs were considered large breed dogs compared with 83 (75 per cent) small/medium breed dogs. Large breed dogs presented significantly more often with a decreased mentation. Age, gender, duration of clinical signs prior to diagnosis, presence of seizures or cluster seizures, variables on complete blood count and cerebrospinal fluid analysis, and all variables on MRI were not significantly different between small/medium and large breed dogs. Median survival time was 281 and 106 days Protected by copyright. for the large and small/medium breed dogs, respectively, with no significant difference in http://veterinaryrecord.bmj.com/ survival curves for both groups. Although considered not typically affected by MUA, 25 per cent of dogs included in this study were considered large breed dogs.

  • Welsh Springer Spaniel
YOU BE THE JUDGE By Robert Cole From Dogs in Canada, June 1999 Based on the CKC standard (July 1995) THE WELSH SPRINGER SPANIEL THE FIRST CLASS (DOGS A, B AND C) Your first class is composed of three mediocre examples. They all have the preferred scissors bite. Their coats are straight, flat and soft to the touch, with moderate feathering in the desired places, and the colour is a rich red and white. THE HEAD All national WSS standards describe the skull as being slightly domes; the stop as being clearly defined and well chiseled below the eyes; the muzzle as straight and fairly square; the eyes as dark or hazel, medium size, not prominent, nor showing haw; and the ears as wet on moderately low; hanging close to the cheeks, comparatively small, gradually narrowing toward the tip and shaped somewhat like a vine leaf. The revised 1989 American Kennel Club WSS standard expands on the CKC description of the head to include the following: The head is in proportion to the body; the eyes are oval shaped; the eye rims are tight and darkly pigmented; the length of muzzle is equal to, but never longer than, that of the skull; the top plane of the skull is slightly divergent from that of the muzzle; the ears are set on approximately at eye level; the nostrils are well developed and black or any shade of brown; and the straight, fairly square muzzle is free for excessive flews. THE BODY PARTS The rest of the Welsh Springer Spaniel fits into the normal endurance and slightly longer than tall category.

  • Grooming a Welsh Springer Spaniel for Pet Or Show by Sandy Roth
Grooming A Welsh Springer Spaniel For Pet Or Show By Sandy Roth Webmaster Note: This article was published in "The Starter Barks", Volume 45, Issue 2, June 2008. If you are fortunate enough to get your Welshie as a puppy you can gently expose the new puppy to the many facets of grooming. By spending 5 minutes a day over several weeks you can have your puppy begging to be groomed. We all know how much Welshies love to eat – just refer to the last issue of the STARTER BARKS. With the use of some tasty morsels and very encouraging words, the puppy can learn to love being groomed. This article will explain how to get a puppy accustomed to being groomed, how to groom a pet Welshie, how to handle that fluffy neutered coat and some tips on grooming the show dog from my perspective. These are only my observations of grooming and there are many other innovative ways to groom and present a dog for pet or show. Just as there are different ways to handle dogs in the show ring to look their best, there are different opinions on how to groom a Welshie. I am continually learning and I invite you to share your opinions on grooming. The best presentation of the dog, according to the breed standard, should be foremost in our discussion and not what the fad of the year is. The goal in grooming for all my dogs is for health and cleanliness. Grooming the Puppy Puppies may balk at the idea of being groomed, but if you do a little each day and reward the puppy for its efforts of staying on the grooming table for five minutes, you will be pleased with the results for years to come.
