THE DUTCH PARLIAMENT: IMPOSSIBLE TO IMAGINE WITHOUT ‘ADOPT AN SDG’ Two years after the launch of the SDGs, on 25 September 2017, our campaign hit the ground running, introducing 17 MPs as adoptive parents of various SDGs. In 2018, the number of adoptive parents rose to 26 MPs. In political debates, in interviews and at events, you can hear the ‘SDG adoptive parents’ enthusiastically discuss their goals, ranging from the promotion of sustainable consumption and production, ending extreme poverty worldwide or improving the position of women and girls, to ensuring access to good education in the Netherlands and abroad. Through concrete proposals, motions, oral and written questions and other parliamentary initiatives, the adoptive parents contribute to the achievement of the 17 goals. Around forty civil society organisations in the domain of development cooperation and sustainability participate in the campaign, either independently or through networks. They provide the MPs with knowledge, expertise and ideas at the right moment. The current Rutte-III government wants the Netherlands to contribute substantially to achieving the SDGs worldwide. After more than a year of campaigning we are pleased to announce that 26 MPs are keeping the cabinet focused in its commitment to the SDG’s! In 2019, the MPs will be introduced to a new tool, the so called SDG Assessment Tool. Through clever use of this tool, they can improve their monitoring task. The assessment tool is designed to provide insight into how new policies, laws and regulations contribute to the achievement of the 17 goals, whether this concerns agriculture, energy policy, development cooperation or any other policy area. -

Using a novel dataset of roll-call votes in the current EP-term, we identify critical members whose votes are necessary to form winning coalitions. We found that committee members with formal positions, EP group coordinators as well as German, French, Italian and British members are powerful actors. Nevertheless, rapporteurs are not necessarily influential. We also concluded that members with moderate ideological position but from Member States with extreme agricultural importance are the most powerful ones. Lijst van gevallen en tussentijds vertrokken wethouders Over de periode 2002-2006, 2006-2010, 2010-2014, 2014-2018 Inleiding De lijst van gevallen en tussentijds vertrokken wethouders verschijnt op de website van De Collegetafel als bijlage bij het boek Valkuilen voor wethouders, uitgegeven door Boombestuurskunde Den Haag. De lijst geeft een overzicht van alle gevallen en tussentijds vertrokken wethouders in de periode 2002 tot en met 2018. Deze lijst van gevallen en tussentijds vertrokken wethouders betreft de wethouders die vanwege een politieke vertrouwensbreuk tijdelijk en/of definitief ten val kwamen tijdens de collegeperiode (vanaf het aantreden van de wethouders na de collegevorming tot het einde van de collegeperiode) en van wethouders die om andere redenen tussentijds vertrokken of voor wie het wethouderschap eindigde voor het einde van de reguliere collegeperiode. De valpartijen van wethouders zijn in deze lijst benoemd als gevolg van een tijdelijke of definitieve politieke vertrouwensbreuk, uitgaande van het vertrekpunt dat een wethouder na zijn benoeming of wethouders na hun benoeming als lid van een college het vertrouwen heeft/hebben om volwaardig als wethouder te functioneren totdat hij/zij dat vertrouwen verliest dan wel het vertrouwen verliezen van de hen ondersteunende coalitiepartij(en). Of wethouders al dan niet gebruik hebben gemaakt van wachtgeld is geen criterium voor het opnemen van ten val gekomen wethouders in de onderhavige lijst. Patronen De cijfermatige conclusies en de geanalyseerde patronen in Valkuilen voor wethouders zijn gebaseerd op deze lijst van politiek (tijdelijk of definitief) gevallen en tussentijds vertrokken wethouders. De reden van het ten val komen of vertrek is in de lijst toegevoegd zodat te zien is welke bijvoorbeeld politieke valpartijen zijn. -

New members of Public Standing – Short CV's Admiral (ret.) Ami Ayalon (Israel) Admiral (ret.) Ami Ayalon, former Chairman of the University of Haifa's Executive Committee (2011-2017), is the Head of the Center for Democracy and National Security at the Israel Democracy Institute. He serves as the Chairman of AKIM Israel (the National Association for the Habilitation of Children and Adults with Intellectual Disabilities), and the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Haifa Research Center for Maritime & Strategy. Ayalon is a former Director of Israel Security Agency (the Shin Bet) and a former commander of Israel's Navy. He has served as a cabinet minister and a member of the Knesset. Along with Sari Nusseibeh, he has headed the People's Voice peace initiative in 2002. Mr. Bastiaan (Bas) Belder (Netherlands) Mr. Bastiaan (Bas) Belder is a Dutch politician and Member of the European Parliament with the SGP, part of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group and sits on the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs. Belder himself is a member of the SGP, the Reformed Political Party. He is a substitute for the Committee on Agriculture. Furthermore he is vice-chairman of the delegation for the relations between the European Parliament and Israel and he is chairman of the European Parliament Working Group on Human Dignity. Prof. Alan Dershowitz (USA) Alan Dershowitz is an American lawyer, jurist, and author. He is a prominent scholar on United States constitutional law and criminal law and a leading defender of civil liberties. He spent most of his career at Harvard Law School where in 1967 (at the age of 28) he became the youngest full professor of law in its history. -

26th June 2017 Declaration Unfinished Justice: Restitution and Remembrance (Following European Conference on Restorative Justice Brussels, 26th April 2017) Preamble It is now more than seventy years after the Holocaust (Shoah) in which six million Jews – seventy-five percent of the Jewish population of Europe – were murdered. Only a small fraction of private and communal immovable and movable property illegitimately seized from Jewish victims has been returned or compensated to rightful owners, heirs, or to the Jewish people at large. Many Holocaust survivors live in poverty and without adequate social care, and their social welfare needs are expanding rapidly as they age. In light of the above We, members of the European Parliament, affirm the moral responsibility of European Union member states to advance Holocaust-era property restitution. We also declare our enduring commitment to the provision of adequate and immediate social welfare support for Holocaust survivors, the demarcation, protection and preservation of Jewish cemeteries, mass graves and other burial sites, the preservation of Jewish heritage sites, and the promotion of Holocaust education, research and remembrance. We recognize the commitment of the European Parliament to restitution of Holocaust-era assets as called for in previous resolutions of the Parliament and reaffirm past international principles and declarations that reflect a consensus for the restitution of Holocaust-era assets. Considering the urgency of the matter We call upon Member States of the European Union to reaffirm their commitment to resolve remaining issues on restitution and compensation of looted property, in accordance with the principles of the Terezin Declaration on Holocaust Era Assets and Related Issues, and to address the growing social welfare needs of Holocaust survivors. -

Nederland heeft erg lang een centralistische bestuurscultuur gekend. De benoemde burgemeester is daar het toppunt van. Maar ook de sturing van het rijk, door geldstromen van departementen, zoals in het jargon heet, te ‘oormerken’. Een term uit de veehouderij. Altijd als woorden uit een andere wereld veelvuldig gehanteerd worden is er iets loos. Denk aan het woord regie, een containerbegrip dat veel bestuurders inmiddels hanteren. Maar regisseurs van opera’s en theatervoorstellingen kunnen door hun persoonlijkheid en verworven gezag maximale invloed hebben op het (muziek) theater dat ze maken, terwijl wethouders door stringente wetten en regels aan handen en voeten gebonden zijn. -

1 03 Sept. 2014 How the Sakharov Prize 2014 is awarded Background briefing In the next 10 days, the nominations of the Sakharov Prize for Human Rights will be decided by the European Parliament. The prize is awarded to “honour exceptional individuals who combat intolerance, fanaticism and oppression.”1 Previous winners include Nelson Mandela, Reporters without Borders and Anatoli Marchenko. If you believe that Azerbaijani human rights defenders – who are now in jail following years of work on behalf of the rights of others, and most recently on a list of political prisoners in Azerbaijan (on which they are now included) – then let the MEPs who vote on this know. Nominations for the Sakharov Prize can be made by: Political groups in the European Parliament. Or At least 40 MEPs. The deadline for nominations is Thursday 18 September at 12:00 in Strasbourg. NOTE: In order to decide on a nominee from their group some political groups have internal deadlines in the course of the next week. The next days are crucial.
