“How Far Will Miley Go Next?”: Miley Cyrus and the News in Celebrity “How far will Miley go next?”: Miley Cyrus and the news in celebrity gossip magazines An Honours Thesis by Lucy Watson ! ! Supervised by Dr Megan Le Masurier Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications), Honours Department of Media and Communications University of Sydney October, 2014 Abstract ! This thesis examines news values in celebrity news. News values have been thoroughly analysed with regard to “serious” news, but little has been done to see how useful existing conceptions of news values are for celebrity news in gossip magazines. This thesis examines coverage of Miley Cyrus in four Australian gossip magazines from December 2010 to July 2014 according to traditional news values, and argues they are inadequate for understanding how celebrity news is produced. It then proposes and tests a different set of news values that function for celebrity news. Using a queer approach to heteronormativity, this thesis argues that the news values employed by celebrity magazines uphold and maintain a normative hierarchy, through the promotion of non-normative behaviour as scandalous gossip, and normative behaviour as worthy of celebration. Keywords: news values; celebrity news; heteronormativity; gossip magazines; Miley Cyrus !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Note: The title of this thesis, “how far will Miley go next?” is derived from a Clickhole article (“She’s at it again!”, 2014). Clickhole is a parody website that, in this article, managed to perfectly encapsulate the tone of gossip magazines, sharing their moral outrage for almost everything Miley does. The cover image is from 22nd September (“The night Miley lost it!”, 2014). ii! Certification of authorship/originality I certify that the work in this thesis has not previously been submitted for a degree nor has it been submitted as part of requirements for a degree except as fully acknowledged within the text. I also certify that the thesis has been written by me. Any help that I have received in my research work and the preparation of the thesis itself has been acknowledged. In addition, I certify that all information sources and literature used are indicated in the thesis. 13th October, 2014 iii! Acknowledgements I wouldn’t have taken the Honours year if it weren’t for my supervisor, Dr Megan Le Masurier. It was your teaching that inspired my interest in writing and academia, changing my career path entirely. I can’t thank you enough. I’d also like to thank the rest of the Media and Communications/Digital Cultures Department, particularly Dr Kathy Cleland and Dr Grant Bollmer for your teaching and guidance this year. Thanks also to my fellow Honours students, especially Astha, for trying to solve all of my problems instead of just ignoring my whining. Huge thanks goes to the Honi Soit editorial team of 2013, for while we might not be editing anymore, you’re still my support and advice team, for everything. Particular thanks to Max and Bryant for helping me code, Nina for providing valuable edits and sharing my moral outrage over Miley’s photoshopped swimmers, Nick for being the subediting king, and Hannah for coding, editing, and just getting my celebrity obsession. I’d also like to thank Bebe, I don’t know how you found the time to help me figure out Word, but you did; Steph, for everything; Grace, for joining me in the library and helping me with queer theory; Joe for the homecooked meals; and the rest of my housemates and family for putting up with me. I was going to thank Miley for providing all the news and entertainment, though perhaps it’s more accurate to thank the gossip magazines for inventing endless and predictable fiction, of which Miley is just one protagonist. iv! (Adapted over the course of this analysis from Rubin, 1984, p. 282) 100 ix! Chapter One: Introduction Despite the fact that no one seems willing to admit they buy them, preferring instead to claim they read them in the doctor’s waiting room, gossip magazines remain some of the most highly circulated magazines in Australia (Aedy, 2014; Bonner; 2014). Regardless of how, or where, they are consumed, it is clear that hundreds of thousands of people find what lies in the folds of the gossip weeklies enticing. But how are the stories inside selected? And what are these tales, these sordid narratives of celebrities’ private lives, really trying to tell us? In 1965, Johan Galtung and Mari Holmboe Ruge developed a set of 12 values that described the selection process of translating events into news.

  • Abstract Resumen
http://www.interferenceslitteraires.be ISSN : 2031 - 2790 Katarzyna PASZKIEWICZ « She Looks Like a Little Piece of Cake » : Sofia Coppola and the Commerce of Auteurism Abstract Sofia Coppola, one of the most discussed female directors in recent years, is clearly embedded in the « commerce of auteurism » (Corrigan 1991), as she actively participates in constructing her authorial image. Building on existing scholarship on the filmmaker as illustra- tive of the new critical paradigm in the studies of women’s film authorship, this article will look at the critical discourses surrounding her films to trace the various processes of authentication and de-authentication of Coppola as an auteur. In my exploration of Coppola’s authorial status – how it is produced in the interaction of these multiple agencies – I will focus specifically on the case of Marie Antoinette (2006). The film, which arguably explores the nature of female cele- brity in the early 21st century, was criticized because of its disregard for historical accuracy, its fascination with surfaces and materiality, and because it offers a highly stylized objectification of the female protagonist. In reference to these critical responses, I will delineate the manifold ways in which Coppola’s authorship is expressed within the realm of material objects and spectacle. This analysis is enriched through a comparison to Sally Potter’s Orlando (1992), which can also be understood as a self-conscious declaration of authorial agency in relation to image making. The web of the possible intertextual relations between both films and Virginia Woolf’s source novel, Orlando: A Biography (1928), points more broadly to the complex network of possibilities and constraints for female authorship, as well as suggesting a critical shift towards a postfeminist moment, informed by changing discourses on consumption and feminine agency.

SOFIA COPPOLA AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF AN APPEALING AESTHETIC by LEILA OZERAN A THESIS Presented to the Department of Cinema Studies and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2016 An Abstract of the Thesis of Leila Ozeran for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of Cinema Studies to be taken June 2016 Title: Sofia Coppola and the Significance of an Appealing Aesthetic Approved: r--~ ~ Professor Priscilla Pena Ovalle This thesis grew out of an interest in the films of female directors, producers, and writers and the substantially lower opportunities for such filmmakers in Hollywood and Independent film. The particular look and atmosphere which Sofia Coppola is able to compose in her five films is a point of interest and a viable course of study. This project uses her fifth and latest film, Bling Ring (2013), to showcase Coppola's merits as a filmmaker at the intersection of box office and critical appeal. I first describe the current filmmaking landscape in terms of gender. Using studies by Dr. Martha Lauzen from San Diego State University and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media to illustrate the statistical lack of a female presence in creative film roles and also why it is important to have women represented in above-the-line positions. Then I used close readings of Bling Ring to analyze formal aspects of Sofia Coppola's filmmaking style namely her use of distinct color palettes, provocative soundtracks, car shots, and tableaus. Third and lastly I went on to describe the sociocultural aspects of Coppola's interpretation of the "Sling Ring." The way the film explores the relationships between characters, portrays parents as absent or misguided, and through film form shows the pervasiveness of celebrity culture, Sofia Coppola has given Bling Ring has a central ii message, substance, and meaning: glamorous contemporary celebrity culture can have dangerous consequences on unchecked youth.

  • Celebrity in the Contemporary Era Hannah Hamad What We May Be
Celebrity in the Contemporary Era Hannah Hamad What we may be looking at in more recent times is a redefining of what a celebrity actually is. It’s not a Hollywood star necessarily. It’s a hairdresser from Essex who’s been on television.’ Ian Drury, Celebrity Publisher, Starsuckers (dir. Chris Atkins, 2009) In 2012, pop star and celebrity style icon Lady Gaga capitalised on the cultural currency of twenty-first century celebrity by bottling fame and selling it. Literally. In August of that year, the Italian American singer and performance artist (known independently of her celebrity persona as Stefani Germanotta) launched her first fragrance 'Lady Gaga Fame' in the global fragrance market. It sold big, it sold fast, and it was enormously profitable to its stakeholders. As Lee Barron notes, 'Lady Gaga Fame' "reportedly sold six million bottles in its first week of release." (2015, 60) This example is instructive for understanding some of the dominant operational logics and industrial mechanics of contemporary celebrity in various ways and for a number of reasons. The concept itself (i.e. the idea that fame can be bottled and sold) speaks directly to the longstanding Marxist cultural studies notion of 'standardisation' - the idea, foundationally theorised by Theodor Adorno, that popular cultural products can serve capitalism most profitably when they are reduced to simple formulae that are replicated and re-introduced to the mass market with slight variation that produces the illusion of differentiation for the consuming audience. Adorno elucidates this phenomenon most famously in relation to the commonalities and simplicities in chord structure and lyric that he identified in popular music recordings (1990 [1941]).

Jessica Martin hat „THE BLING RING“ schon gesehen. Sprecherin: Rebecca hat keinen Bock auf Schule. Sie macht lieber Party, kifft, klaut Geld und Kreditkarten aus Autos und hängt mit ihrem Kumpel Mark ab. Jetzt überlegen die beiden, was sie als Nächstes anstellen könnten. O-Ton 1 (THE BLING RING, 0:15 Min.): „Paris schmeißt heute eine Party in Vegas.“ „Weißt du, wo Sie wohnt? Kannst du das rausfinden?“ „Ähm. 234 Briar Summit Circle.“ „Lass uns hinfahren. Ich wette, sie hat ihren Schlüssel unter der Matte liegen.“ Sprecherin: Stimmt genau! Also spazieren die beiden seelenruhig in die Promi-Villa von Paris Hilton, lassen ein paar Sachen mitgehen und geben damit vor ihren Freunden mächtig an.
