Nathan Besser MAN IN THE CORNER

Your wife sharing the fact that she used to work in a brothel might understandably turn your world upside-down.

But when David finds out that his wife, Leah, is in fact a former call girl, he’s understanding, supportive, and loving. Not long after hearing the story of Leah’s stint as a prostitute, David collapses and awakes after brain surgery. He’s a changed man—listless, bored, and ready for a shift.

He quickly sells his reliable business and enters into a questionable but profitable venture with an enigmatic man named Ben. The two men’s lives intertwine as they become dependent on each other to execute a long con worth millions of dollars. David methodically takes over a man’s long-lost identity, but even as he calmly withdraws funds from a bank account that’s not really his, he wonders about Ben. What are his motives? Why doesn’t his life story add up?

Not knowing that his wife’s revelation has saturated every aspect of his life, David begins a downward spiral into the psyche of the man he is, the man he’s pretending to be, and the man who threatens the very essence of his own existence.

Nathan Besser lives in Sydney with his wife and three children. His short stories have thrice appeared in The Best Australian Stories and have been broadcast nationally on the ABC. Man in the Corner is his first novel. Simon Baker has optioned rights to the screenplay and will direct and star in the film.

6 Peter Blauner PROVING GROUND

Written with the grit and detail of Richard Price and the propulsion of Lee Child, Proving Ground is a brilliant and morally complex New York crime novel by Peter Blauner, the writer who proves that Stephen King and James Patterson can actually agree on something. (King calls him “amazing” and Patterson says “nobody writing suspense novels does it as well”.)

The novel tells the story of Lourdes Robles, a tough, ambitions, Hispanic, female detective just off departmental probation and Nathanial “Natty Dread” Hellerstein, the troubled young war veteran she initially suspects of killing his own father, a famous defense attorney loathed by every cop and prosecutor in the city’s five boroughs.

What begins as a homicide that could have been committed by any number of potential suspects turns into a young man’s Hamlet-like quest to avenge his father’s death and redeem his own past sins. Proving Ground is both a post-war novel in the format of an urban thriller and a tale of a young woman determined to prove herself in a man’s world.

Peter Blauner is the author of six novels, including the Edgar-award-winning Slow Motion Riot and bestseller, The Intruder. His short fiction has been anthologized in the Best American Mystery Stories and on NPR’s “Selected Shorts from Symphony Space.” For the last decade, he worked in television for shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Law & Order: SVU, where one of his teleplays was also nominated for an Edgar in 2014. Currently, he is a co-executive producer for the popular CBS show, Blue Bloods. He lives in Brooklyn.

7 Matthew Carr THE DEVILS OF CARDONA

“A remarkably well-written and entertaining novel. Matthew Carr fills his work with compelling char- acters and handles his material—more than a little relevant for our times—with dazzling grace.” —David Liss, author of The Day of Atonement

In this gripping historical thriller set in sixteenth-century , a Catholic priest is murdered by a mysterious Muslim avenger as the Inquisition continues to force Moriscos to live and worship as Christians.

In March 1584, the priest of Belamar de la Sierra, a small town in Aragon near the French border, is murdered in his own church. Most of the town’s inhabitants are Moriscos, former Muslims who converted to Catholicism. Anxious to avert a violent backlash on the eve of a royal visit, an adviser to King Philip II appoints local magistrate Bernardo de Mendoza to in- vestigate. A soldier and humanist, Mendoza doesn't always live up to the moral standards expected of court officials, but he has a reputation for incorruptibility.

From the beginning, Mendoza finds almost universal hatred for the priest. And it isn’t long before he’s drawn into a complex and dangerous world in which greed, fanaticism, and state policy overlap. And as the killings continue, Mendoza’s investigation is overshadowed by the real prospect of an ethnic and religious civil war.

By turns an involving historical thriller and a novel with parallels to our own time, The Devils of Cardona is an unexpected and compelling read.

Matthew Carr is a writer, journalist, blogger, and lifelong Hispanophile. The Devils of Cardona is his first novel; his non-fiction books include: The Infernal Machine: A History of Terrorism, Fortress Europe: Dispatches from a Gated Continent, and Blood and Faith: The Purging of Muslim Spain.

8 Blake Crouch DARK MATTER

“Brilliant. A book to remember. I think Blake Crouch just invented something new.” —Lee Child, author of Make Me

Jason Dessen is a forty-year-old physics professor living with his wife and son in Chicago. One night, after a celebration with his old roommate who was just awarded a prestigious prize in astrophysics, Jason heads home. But he never makes it.

A man wearing a Geisha mask suddenly forces Jason at gunpoint into the driver seat of a black SUV. Jason is made to drive to South Chicago, where his abductor marches him into an abandoned power plant on the shore of Lake Michigan. Jason thinks he’s going to be tortured and killed, but instead he’s given a powerful drug.

When Jason next comes to consciousness, he’s surrounded by people in Hazmat suits who carry him on a stretcher through a strange hangar into a quarantine unit. Jesse Donaldson THE MORE THEY DISAPPEAR

“A heartbreaking whydunnit set in the ferocious Kentucky hills, The More They Disappear is relent- less but masterful in its portrayal of love, addiction, and lonesomeness.” —Smith Henderson, author of Fourth of July Creek

When long-time Kentucky sheriff Lew Mattock is shot in the head by a confused, drug- addicted teenager, chief deputy Harlan Dupee is tasked with solving the crime.

Every criminal the sheriff has ever locked up is a suspect, but as Harlan examines the circum- stances surrounding Lew’s death, he finds out his former boss wasn’t an innocent. Harlan’s search takes him headlong into the county’s burgeoning prescription drug trade, from wooded ATV parks and tobacco farms to riverboat casinos, from the slanted steps of trailer parks to the manicured porches of prominent citizens.

As the evidence brings Harlan closer to his unlikely suspect, he comes to doubt the law and its ability to solve the country’s problem.

The More They Disappear explores the violent years following Purdue Pharma’s release of OxyContin. It is an unnerving tale of addiction and loss, the battle to overcome the darkest parts of ourselves in search of redemption.

Jesse Donaldson was a fellow at The Michener Center for Writers in Austin, Texas, and his writing has appeared in The Oxford America, Little Star, and Crazyhorse. He lives in Oregon.

10 Katherine Govier THE THREE SISTERS BAR AND HOTEL

Praise for The Ghost Brush:

“...Govier astonishes throughout in her ability to write epic themes intimately, particularly in the lyri- cal, absorbing, and intense final hundred pages.”— Publishers Weekly (starred review)

It is 1911, and the coming of the railroad to the Canadian Rockies brings a parade of newcom- ers to the Bow Valley—coal miners, scientists, runaway aristocrats, and remittance men. Among them is poacher Herbie Wishart.

Herbie reinvents himself as a trail guide in the town of Gateway and becomes an outfitter for a fossil-hunting expedition headed by a prominent archaeologist. Rumor has it that the secrecy- shrouded Hodgson expedition could overturn all previous knowledge about early life forms. Along for the trip are Hodgson’s adult children, mopey Humphrey and the captivating Isabel, with whom Herbie strikes up a camp-side alliance. But when an early snowstorm hits and trailside grudges come to a head, the expedition mysteriously vanishes. Despite all efforts to solve—or bury—the mystery, it will haunt Gateway for the next century. Under the spell of the looming Three Sisters peaks, Herbie seems able to bring only a daughter, and she more daughters, into the world.

The Three Sisters Bar and Hotel is at once sweeping and intimate, bursting with heart and wit, and larger-than-life characters whose sheer brio rivals the dazzling and dangerous Rocky Mountains.

Katherine Govier’s most recent novel, The Ghost Brush, was published in the as The Printmaker’s Daughter, and in translation in Romania, Spain, Quebec, and Japan. Her novel Creation was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. She has won the Marian Engel Award and the Toronto Book Award, and has twice been nominated for the Trillium Book Award. The author of twelve previous books, Govier divides her time between Toronto, Ontario, and Canmore, Alberta.

Henry Quantum has several thoughts going through his head at any given time, so it’s no surprise when he forgets something very important—specifically, a Christmas gift for his wife, Margaret, which he realizes on the morning of December 23rd. Henry sets off that day in search of the perfect present for Margaret: a bottle of Chanel No. 5.

But much like Henry’s ever-wandering mind, his quest takes him in different and unexpected directions, including running into the former love of his life, Daisy. Margaret, meanwhile, has begun her own affair, seeking an escape from her unhappy marriage. And Daisy, who has made the unsettling choice of leaving her husband to strike out on her own, finds herself questioning whether she and Henry belong together after all.

12 Kaui Hart Hemmings HOW TO PARTY WITH AN INFANT

“Kaui Hart Hemmings is the master of heartfelt unsentimentality. Her third novel looks unflinchingly at the rewards and pitfalls of single motherdom in a culture obsessed with sanctimonious parenting.” —Courtney Maum, author of I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You

Two years ago, when she told her boyfriend, Bobby, she was pregnant, Mele imagined he’d drop to one knee and propose. Instead, he announced he was engaged to someone else.

Raising Ellie as a single mom in is no cake walk. But Mele has navigated the Mommy minefields to the best of her ability. She’s found a group of parents who are willing to laugh at themselves and at the hovering, hand-wringing, organic-obsessed, parent-police in equal parts.

When Bobby invites Ellie to be the flower girl at his wedding, Mele’s fixation with Bobby and his ever-so-perfect fiancé grows intense. As does her anxiety about what to wear and who to bring to the wedding. So Mele distracts herself by entering a cookbook writing contest spon- sored by the San Francisco Mommy Club. Mele decides the best way to fill out the question- naire is to interview members of her parenting group for inspiring recipes—and to be explo- sively, hilariously, honest. Mele doesn’t anticipate that she’ll ignite long-latent appetites—both culinary and romantic.

How to Party With an Infant is a poignant and piercing journey through the helicopter- parenting of the 21st Century, guided by another unforgettable character in Mele Bart. As she did with The Descendants, Kaui Hart Hemmings deftly toes the line between the disastrous and the comical in this vividly imagined novel.

Kaui Hart Hemmings has degrees from Colorado College and Sarah Lawrence, and she was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. Her first novel, a New York Times bestseller, The Descend- ants, has been published in twenty-two other countries and is now an Oscar-winning film directed by Alexander Payne and starring George Clooney. She is also the author of a story collection House of Thieves, the novel The Possibilities, and the YA novel Juniors. She lives in Hawaii. 18 Wendy James THE GOLDEN CHILD

Praise for Lost Girls:

“A wonderful, unputdownable story by a great Australian author.” —Liane Moriarty, author of The Husband’s Secret

“DizzyLizzy” is an Aussie gal, now a mother of two, transported from the sunny shores of Sydney town to the colder climes of Somewhere, USA. She’s mostly enjoying the experience— even if it has left her feeling, well, just a little disoriented. Lizzy’s blog is a kind of miscellany of all the random experiences that add up to a life, with an emphasis on motherhood. Lizzy’s virtual life couldn't be better: she has a handsome husband, two gorgeous children, plenty of money, and a devoted blog audience.

But the very real Beth, the woman behind Lizzy’s persona, is a little more complicated: Her move back to Australia hasn’t gone quite according to plan; her new house is a dump; her mother-in-law hates her, and her own mother lives way too close; her husband isn’t quite the man she thought he was; her two teenage daughters are busy making their own lives.

When a good friend’s teenage daughter is left comatose after a suicide attempt—the victim of a relentless and wicked bullying campaign—Beth’s life really begins to unravel. Because it’s beginning to look as if Beth’s perfect daughter—her golden child—is the bully.

Wendy James’s new novel is a confronting and suspenseful inquiry into our most profoundly held beliefs about nature and nurture. The story also offers a thought-provoking examination of the gulf between the virtual and the real as we construct our online lives.

Wendy James is the author of the best-selling book The Mistake. Her debut novel, Out of Silence, won the 2006 Ned Kelly Award for first crime novel, and was shortlisted for the Nita May Dobbie Award for women’s writing. Her prize-winning short stories and articles have been widely published. She works as an editor at the Australian Institute of Health Implementation, and runs a writing school in Newcastle, NSW.

“Could we have an American Houellebecq? Jarett Kobek might come close… I just got an early copy of his newest… and devoured it—he’s as riotous as Houllebecq, and you don’t need a translator, only fire- proof gloves for turning the pages.” —Jonathan Lethem, The Scofield

What if you told the truth and the whole world heard you? What if you lived in a country swamped with Internet outrage? What if you were a woman in a society that hated women?

Set in the San Francisco of 2013, I Hate the Internet offers a hilarious and obscene portrayal of life amongst the victims of the digital boom. As billions of tweets fuel the city’s gentrification and the human wreckage piles up, a group of friends suffers the consequences of being useless in a new world that despises the pointless and unprofitable.

In this, his first full-length novel, Jarett Kobek tackles the pressing questions of our moment. Why do we applaud the enrichment of CEOs at the expense of the weak and powerless? Why are we giving away our intellectual property? Why is activism in the 21st Century nothing more than a series of morality lectures typed into devices built by slaves?

Here, at last, comes an explanation of the Internet in the crudest possible terms.

Jarett Kobek is a Turkish-American writer living in California. His novella, ATTA, has appeared in Spanish translation, been the subject of much academic writing, and was a recent bestseller in parts of Canada. He writes regularly for museums and galleries, with his essays appearing under the auspices of Frieze, the Hammer Museum, and White Cube.

20 Taylor Larsen STRANGER, FATHER, BELOVED

“A mesmerizing, unsparing exploration of one man’s descent, told in subtle, precise language that is reminiscent at times of Raymond Carver, Haruki Murakami, and Carson McCullers, but entirely Larsen’s own creation; a wonderful debut.” —Karen Russell, author of Swamplandia!

Taylor Larsen’s enigmatic debut novel follows the life and downward spiral of wealthy family man Michael James, who has reached a crossroads after a lifetime of repression and denial. His mental breakdown converges with his teenage daughter’s sexual awakening and rebellion, resulting in an atmosphere of tension and uncertainty in the James home.

When Michael sees his wife, Nancy, chatting with a stranger at a party they’re hosting, he’s stunned by the strength of his feeling that he’s watching her with the man she should have married. This feeling up-ends Michael’s life, and he begins a campaign to replace himself within his own family with this other man—this worthier, better, kinder man—all so his faithful wife Nancy, his beautiful teenage daughter Ryan, and his young, asthmatic son Darryl, can live the life they deserve.

As Michael pursues this man’s friendship, inserting him into the family dynamic, and Ryan distances herself from her family, ashamed of her mother and father and enamored of herself, Nancy is increasingly befuddled and frustrated. The family unit devolves into chaos as Michael abandons everyone during a Christian retreat, assured of his conviction that everyone would be better off without him as he sinks into utter delusion.

With the deviancy of Tom Perrotta’s Little Children and the sensitivity of Lorrie Moore, Larsen has written an explosive story about a family on the verge of unraveling.

Taylor Larsen is a graduate of Columbia University’s MFA program in fiction writing. Taylor has taught fiction writing at Columbia University and the Sackett Street Writers Workshop, as well as literature courses for Pace University. Stranger, Father, Beloved was selected for Columbia University’s Faculty Selects program for her novel. Originally from Virginia, Taylor lives in Brooklyn with her husband.

“Jim Lynch’s Before the Wind is such a wonderful novel—so wry, wise and engaging, so sleek and descriptive—I already have a spot picked out for it on my bookshelf, next to those other classic stories of iconoclastic Westerners, Kesey’s Sometimes a Great Notion and Duncan’s The Brothers K.” —Jess Walter, author of Beautiful Ruins

From the author of Border Songs and Truth Like the Sun, Lynch’s long-awaited breakthrough— a grand saga of a sailing-obsessed family that will stand alongside Ken Kesey’s Sometimes a Great Nation.

Joshua Johannssen has spent all of his twenty-nine years among sailboats. His grandfather designed them, his father built and raced them, his mother knows why and how they work (or not). For Josh and his two siblings, their backyard was the Puget Sound and sailing their DNA. But both his sister and brother fled many years ago: Ruby to Africa and elsewhere to do good works on land, and Bernard to god-knows-where at sea, a fugitive and pirate.

Now pushing thirty, Josh—who repairs boats of all kinds in a Steinbeckian marina south of Seattle—is still pained by whatever it was that went wrong with his damn family. But when the Johannssens unexpectedly reunite for the most important race in these waters—all of them together on a historic vessel they made decades ago—they will be carried to destinies both individual and collective, and to a heart-shattering revelation.

Past and present merge seamlessly and collide surprisingly as Jim Lynch reveals a family unlike any other with the grace and magic of a master storyteller.

Jim Lynch is the author of three novels, including The Highest Tide, which won the 2006 Pacific Northwest Bookseller Award and was an international bestselling novel; and Border Songs, which won the Washington State Book Award for Fiction. Lynch is a recipient of the Livingston Young Journalist Award, and lives with his wife in Olympia, Washington.

Donald Ray Pollock THE HEAVENLY TABLE

“The Heavenly Table is a ferociously gothic ballad about desperate folks with improbable dreams and scant means. It is potent and chimeric, dank, violent, swamped in tragedy—and funny as hell.” —Daniel Woodrell, author of Winter’s Bone

From Donald Ray Pollock, author of the highly acclaimed The Devil All the Time and Knockem- stiff, comes a dark, gritty, electrifying (and, disturbingly, weirdly funny) new novel that will solidify his place among the best contemporary American authors.

It is 1917, in that sliver of border land that divides Georgia from Alabana. Dispossessed farmer Pearl Jewett ekes out a hardscrabble existence with his three young sons: Cane (the eldest; handsome; intelligent); Cob (short; heavy set; a bit slow); and Chimney (the youngest; thin; ill-tempered). Several hundred miles away in southern Ohio, a farmer by the name of Ellsworth Fiddler lives with his son, Eddie, and his wife, Eula. After Ellsworth is swindled out of his family’s entire fortune, his life is put on a surprising, unforgettable, and violent trajecto- ry that will directly lead him to cross paths with the Jewetts. No good can come of it. Or can it?

In the gothic tradition of Flannery O’Connor and Cormac McCarthy with a healthy dose of cinematic violence reminiscent of Sam Peckinpath, Quentin Tarantion, and the Coen Brothers, the Jewetts and the Fiddlers will find their lives colliding in increasingly dark and horrific ways, placing Donald Ray Pollock in the company of the genre’s literary masters.

Donald Ray Pollock grew up in Knockemstiff, Ohio, and quit high school at seventeen to work in a meatpacking plant. He then spent thirty-two years employed as a laborer at the Mead Paper Corporation in Chillicothe, Ohio before enrolling in the MFA program at Ohio State University. His first book, a collection of stories called Knockemstiff, won the 2009 PEN/Robert Bingham Fellowship. His first novel, The Devil All the Time, was published in 2011.

Karen Rinaldi THE END OF MEN

The End of Men exposes the difficulties modern women face balancing work, marriage, and family in a brutally realistic and poignant way that is yet to be portrayed in contemporary fic- tion.

Isabelle, Beth, Anna, Maggie, and Georgia have everything: career, children, men, sex, self- esteem, and power. Strong-willed and confident, these women tend to their own needs with- out fear of consequence, often pushing the boundaries of “acceptable” behavior in their race to have it all.

Far from so called “mommy lit,” The End of Men shines a klieg light on modern day relation- ships between women and men, depicting the shifting power dynamics in marriages and ex- hibiting the emerging dominance of women in contemporary society. Inspired by Mary McCarthy’s classic novel The Group, this book asks what happens when happily ever after is over.

“One of the most magnetically compelling writers working today. Witty, caustic, and worldly.” — The Wall Street Journal

The brilliant new novel from the Orange Prize-winning author of We Need to Talk About Kevin centers on three generations of The Mandible family as a fiscal crisis hits a near-future America.

It is 2029. The Mandibles have been counting on a sizeable fortune filtering down when their 97-year-old patriarch dies. Yet America’s soaring national debt has grown so enormous that it can never be repaid. Under siege from an upstart international currency, the dollar is in melt- down. A bloodless world war will wipe out the savings of millions of American families.

Their inheritance turned to ash, each family member must contend with disappointment, but also—as the effects of the downturn start to hit—the challenge of sheer survival. Recently affluent Avery is petulant that she can’t buy olive oil, while her sister Florence is forced to absorb strays into her increasingly cramped household. As their father Carter fumes at having to care for his demented stepmother now that a nursing home is too expensive, his sister Nollie, an expat author, returns from abroad at 73 to a country that’s unrecognizable.

Perhaps only Florence’s oddball teenage son Willing, an economics autodidact, can save this formerly august American family from the streets.

This is not science fiction. This is a frightening, fascinating, scabrously funny glimpse into the decline that may await the United States all too soon, from the pen of perhaps the most consistently perceptive and topical author of our times.

Lionel Shriver’s novels include Big Brother, The New Republic, the National Book Award finalist So Much for That, the New York Times bestseller The Post-Birthday World, and the Orange Prize- winner We Need to Talk About Kevin. Her journalism has appeared in the Guardian, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and many other publications. She lives in London and Brooklyn, New York.

“Drew Smith has one of the most honest and original voices of any of our young novelists. He’s willing to tear his guts out for us—like the greats do—and remind us that, terrified and confused though we are, we’re not alone.” —Clancy Martin, author of Bad Sex

Arcade, Drew Smith’s provocative debut novel, is a fearless and darkly funny exploration of sex in the modern era—along with all its attendant complications, confusions, and obsessions.

Though there has arguably never been a better time to be a gay man, try telling that to the thirty-something narrator of Arcade. His anxious, religious upbringing in a small town has led him to the most archaic and outmoded local for connection with potential partners—a XXX peepshow arcade on the outskirts of town where closeted men meet for anonymous sex.

The events he witnesses, the men he encounters, and the bizarre setting itself trigger contemplative digressions into such subjects as the curse of being a short straight man, the frightening overlap between horror movies and his love life, and the false expectations created by multiple childhood viewings of Porky’s and The Big Chill. Naturally, his thoughts also turn to his own romantic history and heartbreak, as well as pornography, sex, and whether the arcade is a frivolous pastime or the most meaningful place in his life—a question he never has to face as long as it’s open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Equal parts anthropological dispatch and fictional memoir, Arcade is filled with details about the sleazy and bizarre rituals of the place, filtered through the evolving narrator’s cultural viewpoint and perspective on himself and the world around him.

Drew Smith’s essays, reviews, and interviews have appeared in many places in print and online, including The Believer, Tin House, Paste Magazine, The Millions, Daily Beast, and others. He lives in Austin.

26 Steve Toutonghi JOIN

“Join is a searing, ballistic plunge into the mysteries of identity and morality. Its ingenious core is revealed and amplified by high voltage suspense and murder. Delicious.” —Katherine Dunn, author of Geek Love

What if you could live multiple lives simultaneously, have constant, perfect companionship, and never die? That’s the promise of Join, a revolutionary technology that allows small groups of minds to unite, forming a single consciousness that experiences the world through multiple bodies. But as two best friends discover, the light of that miracle may be blinding the world to its horrors.

Chance and Leap are jolted out of their professional routines by a terrifying stranger—a remorseless killer who freely manipulates the networks that regulate life in the post-Join world. Their quest for answers—and survival—brings them from the networks and spire communities they’ve known to the scarred heart of an environmentally ravaged North Ameri- can continent and an underground community of the “ferals” left behind by the rush of technology.

In the storytelling tradition of classic speculative fiction from writers like David Mitchell and Michael Chabon, Join offers a pulse-pounding story that poses the largest possible questions: How long can human life be sustained on our planet in the face of environmental catastrophe? What does it mean to be human, and what happens when humanity takes the next step in its evolution? If the individual mind becomes obsolete, what have we lost and gained, and what is still worth fighting for?

Steve Toutonghi has spent over twenty years in the technology industry in Silicon Valley and Seattle, and studied poetry and fiction while completing a degree in Anthropology at Stanford. Passionate about the art of storytelling, Stephen has read over 125 books out loud to entertain his wife and their gray cat, Steinbeck.

29 David Vann BRIGHT AIR BLACK

Praise for Aquarium:

“David Vann knows the dark interior of family tragedies—his own life is fraught with them—and he brings both witness and intense examination to stories of human savagery. His work speaks with an understanding of the unconscionable.” —Washington Post Book World

Set in the Mediterranean and Black Sea 3,250 years ago, Bright Air Black is David Vann’s exhila- rating version of Medea as a slayer of kings who wants a world not ruled by men.

Following the success of Aquarium, which was a New York Times Editor’s Choice and garnered numerous rave reviews, David Vann transports us to 13th century B.C. to give a nuanced and electric portrait of the life of one of ancient mythology’s most fascinating and notorious women, Medea.

In brilliant poetic prose, this book brings us aboard the ship Argo for its epic return journey across the Black Sea from Persia’s Colchis—where Medea flees her home and father with Jason, the Argonauts, and the Golden Fleece. Vann’s reimagining of this ancient tale offers a thrilling, realist alternative to the long held notions of Medea as monster or sorceress. We witness the dramatic urgency Medea’s humanity, her Bronze Age roots and position in Greek society, her love affair with Jason, and her tragic demise.

Atmospheric and spellbinding, Bright Air Black is an indispensable, fresh, and provocative take on one of our earliest texts and the most intimate and corporal version of Medea’s story ever told.

David Vann’s internationally-bestselling books have won 15 prizes, including best foreign novel in France and Spain, and have appeared on 70 Best Books of the Year lists in a dozen countries. His novels include Aquarium, Goat Mountain, Dirt, and Legend of a Suicide among others. He holds degrees from Stanford and Cornell and is currently a Professor at the Univer- sity of Warwick in England.

32 Paul Brinkley-Rogers PLEASE ENJOY YOUR HAPPINESS A Memoir

An evocative memoir. A beautiful journey to half a century and half a world away. An ageless love story.

Pulitzer Prize winning war correspondent Paul Brinkley-Rogers has lived an adventurous life all over the world. But there is one story he cannot forget—that of his haunting love affair with a mysterious older Japanese woman in 1959. Paul was a sailor aboard the USS Shangri-la that long ago summer when he met Kaji Yukiko in the seaport of Yokusuka. A fierce intellectual, Yukiko shared her astonishing knowledge of literature, film, and poetry with Pual and encour- aged, even demanded, that he use his gifts to become the writer he is today.

But theirs was not a quiet love story. When a member of the yakuza, Japan’s brutal crime syndicate, attempted to kidnap Yukiko, Paul realized that there was much more to her, and to Japan in the devastating wake of World War II, than he saw at first glance. Through dozens of letters that Yukiko wrote to him and Paul’s vivid telling of a history made all the more powerful and poignant by the weight of time, Please Enjoy Your Happiness reaches across decades and continents, inviting us all to revisit those loves of our lives that never do end.

Paul Brinkley-Rogers was a British citizen when he enlisted for four years in the US Navy. Later, he became a reporter for the daily military newspaper published in Tokyo. In 1967, Brinkley-Rogers became a staff member of Newsweek. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1974 for his photos of an assassination attempt on Korean President Park Chung Hee. He covered Cuba and Latin America as a staff member of the Miami Herald from 1997 to 2001 and was a member of the newspaper’s team of reporters that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2001.

33 Meghan Cox Gurdon THE ENCHANTED HOUR Why Children Flourish When We Read Aloud to Them

The Enchanted Hour will explore the social, familial, neurological, and psychological benefits of parents reading aloud to their children.

Meghan’s weekly column at The Wall Street Journal reaches 2.4 million readers online, and in print, and her inspiration for this book came after an op-ed she wrote last year called “The Great Gift of Reading Aloud” prompted an avalanche of avid responses. More than 40,000 people shared the story on , and she received hundreds of letters affirming the deep positivity people feel when they think about reading aloud to their children and to their be- ing read to as children. She has also tested this idea at lectures, receiving equally strong re- sponses.

Like Christopher McCougall bringing the ancient art of running back to public consciousness in Born to Run, The Enchanted Hour will attempt to give a modern look at the centuries-old art of reading aloud, both informing readers and motivating them to spread the message and practice of reading aloud themselves. It can also be seen as a 21st century spin on Jim Trelease’s The Read Aloud Handbook, offering the latest science and research on the benefits of creating an “enchanted hour” before bedtime, in contrast to families locked into their screens, connected to their laptops or iPads but isolated from each other—and from the joys (and benefits) of reading together.

Meghan Cox Gurdon is the children’s book critic for The Wall Street Journal, a longtime journalist and long-ago foreign correspondent, and the mother of five. She and her English husband, Hugo, live with their family just outside Washington, DC.

35 Ingrid Fetell Lee THE AESTHETICS OF JOY How the Outside World Makes Us Happy Inside

Ingrid Fetell Lee has devoted years to in-depth study of one transformative idea: human beings are capable of designing our own happiness from the outside in. We are often taught that inner joy has little-to-no relationship to our external environment. Increasingly, experts urge us to find balance and calm by searching inside or profoundly altering ourselves— through mindfulness, meditation, and medication—all while muting the outside world.

But it is the natural vibrancy and harmony of our world that provides the most basic, renewa- ble, and easily-accessible sources of joy. We have evolved to gravitate toward certain universal aesthetics—shapes, colors, and other sensorial effects—regardless of our age, gender, geography, or ethnicity. These hardwired characteristics and environmental responses have kept us alive as a species for thousands of years. By understanding the components of blissful moments, we can transform joy from an intangible, fleeing feeling to something that stays with us throughout the day.

The Aesthetics of Joy starts with precisely the things that aren’t supposed to matter—the mundane objects and spaces we interact with every day—and shows the surprising effects they can have on our emotions. Fetell Lee explains why one setting makes us feel anxious or competitive, while another fosters acceptance and sharing. Drawing on new research from neuroscience and psychology, this book reveals the secrets of how design stimulates delight in the brain, showing how small changes to our surroundings can lead to happier, healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Ingrid Fetell Lee is a Design Director at global innovation firm IDEO and founder of the blog Aesthetics of Joy. Lee’s writing is informed by twelve years of experience in design and brand- ing, leading programs for Target, Conde Nast, PepsiCo, and the US government, among others. She holds a Master’s in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute and a Bachelor’s in English and Creative Writing from Princeton University, and was a founding faculty member in the Products of Design program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

The M.F.K. Fisher Estate

“[M.F.K. Fisher] has the extraordinary ability to make the ordinary seem rich and wonderful. Her dignity comes from her absolute insistence on appreciating life as it comes to her.” —Ruth Reichl, author of Tender at the Bone

Probably the most satisfying soup in the world for people who are hungry, as well as for those who are tired or worried or cross or in debt or in a moderate amount of pain or in love or in robust health or in any kind of business huggermuggery, is minestrone… It is a thick, unsophisticated soup, heart-warming and soul-satisfying, full of aromatic vegetables and well bound at the last with good cheese.

—excerpt from How to Cook a Wolf

M.F.K. Fisher (1908 – 1992) was a preeminent food writer and the author of twenty-seven books, including a translation of The Physiology of Taste by Brillat-Savarin. Her musings and memories on food and life have been published widely around the world and have served as inspiration for generations of food writers (and enthusiasts) that followed. Her first book, Serve it Forth, was published in 1937, and one of her best known is the compilation, The Art of Eating, first published in 1954 and reissued in 2004, was called by Julia Child "the essence of M.F.K. Fisher, whose wit and fulsome opinions on food and those who produce it, comment upon it, and consume it are as apt today as they were several decades ago, when she composed them.” The Art of Eating brought together classic M.F.K. Fisher titles such as: Consider the Oyster, How to Cook a Wolf, and The Gastronomical Me.

37 Janine di Giovanni THE MORNING THEY CAME FOR US Dispatches from Syria

Praise for Madness Visible:

“Janine di Giovanni has described war in a way that almost makes me think it never needs to be described again… More than a book about war, however, this is a book about the human race, in all its anguishing complexity.” —Sebastian Junger, author of War

Once in a decade comes an account of war that promises to be a classic…

Doing for Syria what Imperial Life in the Emerald City did for the war in Iraq, The Morning They Came for Us bears witness to one of the most brutal, internecine conflicts in recent history. Drawing from years of experience covering Syria for Vanity Fair, Newsweek, and the front pages of the New York Times, award-winning journalist Janine di Giovanni gives us a tour de force of war reportage, all told through the perspective of ordinary people—among them a doctor, a nun, a musician, and a student.

What emerges is an extraordinary picture of the devastating human consequences of armed conflict, one that charts an apocalyptic but at times tender story of life in a jihadist war zone. Recalling celebrated works by Ryszard Kapus´cin´ski, Philip Gourevitch, and Anne Applebaum, The Morning They Came for Us, through its unflinching account of a nation on the brink of disintegration, becomes an unforgettable testament to resilience in the face of nihilistic human debasement.

Janine di Giovanni is a writer for The Times of London and Vanity Fair, a contributor to the New York Times Magazine, The New Republic, The Spectator, National Geographic, and many others. She also writes columns and Op-Ed pieces for the Wall Street Journal and the International Herald Tribune. She frequently lectures on human rights abuse around the world. One of the world’s most respected and experienced reporters, she has vast experience covering war and conflict. Her reporting has been called “established, accomplished brilliance,” and she has been cited as “the finest foreign correspondent of our generation.”

Robin Dreeke

THE CODE OF TRUST

Authentic trust is elusive and rare, but when properly understood, it can open nearly any door in life and can serve as a foundation for the longest-lasting leadership. It’s also a topic strikingly absent from trade book publishing. But Robin Dreeke’s The Code of Trust (with a foreword by New York Times bestselling author Joe Navarro) will now reveal the secrets of achieving trust in any domain of life, drawing from Dreeke’s training and service as a federal law enforcement officer and an officer of the US Marine Corps.

Eschewing manipulation and trickery, Dreeke provides a five-point system of principles by which to achieve authentic trust: (1) ego suspension, (2) non-judgmentalism, (3) application of reason, (4) validation of others, and (5) generosity.

He will also provide case examples and evidence from inside and outside law enforcement to back it all up.

Robin Dreeke entered federal law enforcement in 1997, after graduating from the US Naval Academy and serving in the US Marine Corps. He received advanced training and operational experience in social psychology and in the practical application of the science of relationship development. Eventually he rose to direct the behavioral analysis program in a federal law enforcement agency. Dreeke is currently an agent of the FBI and lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Angela Duckworth GRIT The Power of Passion and Perseverance

“Grit is a persuasive and fascinating response to the cult of IQ fundamentalism. Duckworth reminds us that it is character and perseverance that set the successful apart.” —Malcolm Gladwell

Why do some people succeed and others fail? Sharing new insights from her landmark research on grit, MacArthur “genius” and TED talk star Angela Duckworth explains why talent is hardly a guarantor of success. Rather, other factors can be even more crucial, such as identifying our passions and following through on our commitments.

Drawing on her own story as the daughter of a scientist who frequently bemoaned her lack of smarts, Duckworth describes her winding path through teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience, which led to the hypothesis that what really drives success is not “genius” but a special blend of passion and long-term perseverance. As a professor at the University of Penn- sylvania, Duckworth created her own “character lab” and set out to test her theory.

Here, she takes readers into the field to visit teachers working in some of the toughest schools, mines fascinating insights from history, and shows what can be gleaned from modern experi- ments in peak performance. Finally, she shares what she’s learned from interviewing dozens of high-achievers. Winningly personal and life-changing, Grit is a book about what goes through your head when you fall, and how that makes all the difference.

Angela Duckworth, Ph.D., is a 2013 MacArthur Fellow and professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. An expert in non-I.Q. competencies, she has advised the White House, the World Bank, NBA and NFL teams, and Fortune 500 CEOs. Prior to her career in research, she was an award-winning math and science teacher as well as the founder of a summer school for low-income children that won the Better Government Award from the state of Massachusetts. Tiffany Dufu DROP THE BALL Women, Partnership, and Achieving More by Doing Less

“Tiffany is a star in the world of women.” —Sheryl Sandberg

There are two puzzling questions about men that women can’t justify: Whey are they dominat- ing the top leadership positions when women represent over half of college graduates? And why do they want to have sex when the house is a mess? Surprisingly, the answers are linked. For women, it’s not only a glass ceiling blocking their way—it’s also the increasingly heavy obligations at home that weigh them down. Just as women reach middle management, they begin battling full-time responsibilities as wives and mothers with full-time jobs that leave them stressed and often unhappy. Women have become accustomed to delegating and negoti- ating at the office, but when it comes to managing the households, they still bear the brunt of the work.

The simple solution: negotiate with men in their personal lives. Tiffany Dufu explains how women can create domestic partnerships that protect them against professional burn-out.

With humor, inspiration, and solid and personal insight, Tiffany proposes a paradigm in which men and women come together at home so that both can be successful at work. She draws on social psychology, history, and her own story to present the path that all women can take to embrace imperfection, make a new and better deal at home, and truly thrive. With solu- tions that apply to everyone—not just married, straight couples—Tiffany shows how this mod- el will benefit women in both spheres of their lives, and positively impact their families.

Drop the Ball is part manifesto and part roadmap for women who want to uncover what matters most to them so they can discover how to get it all by doing less.

Tiffany Dufu is Chief Leadership Officer to Levo League and Launch Team member to Lean In. Previously, Tiffany was President of The White House Project, a women’s leadership or- ganization. The Huffington Postnamed her one of nineteen “women who are leading the way” amongst luminaries such as Hillary Clinton and Diane Sawyer. Tiffany is a widely sought-after speaker who has lectured at Fortune Magazine’s Most Powerful Women Summit. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in English from the University of Washington, and lives in New York City with her husband and two small children. 41

Praise for The Information:

“A grand narrative if every there was one… Gleick provides lucid expositions for readers who are up to following the science and suggestive analogies for those who are just reading for the plot… A prodigious intellectual survey.” —New York Times Book Review

From the acclaimed author of The Information and Chaos, a mind-bending exploration of the time travel: its subversive origins, its evolution in literature and science, and its influence on our understanding of time itself.

Gleick’s story begins at the turn of the previous century with the young H. G. Wells writing and rewriting the fantastic tale that became his first book, an international sensation, The Time Machine. A host of forces were converging to transmute the human understanding of time, some philosophical and some technological—the electric telegraph, the steam railroad, the dis- covery of buried civilizations, and the perfection of clocks.

Gleick tracks the evolution of time travel as an idea in the culture—from Marcel Proust to Doc- tor Who, from Woody Allen to Jorge Luis Borges. He delves into the inevitable looping para- doxes and examines the porous boundary between pulp fiction and modern physics. Finally, he delves into a temporal shift that is unsettling our own moment: the instantaneous wired world, with its all-consuming present and vanishing future.

James Gleick is our leading chronicler of science and technology, and the best-selling author of Chaos: Making a New Science, Genius: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman, and The Infor- mation: A History, A Theory, A Flood. His books have been translated into thirty languages.

“Marcelo Gleiser brings a physicist’s knowledge, a philosopher’s wisdom, and a poet’s language to elucidate our largest questions.” —Rebecca Goldstein, author of Plato at the Googleplex

Marcelo Gleiser has had a passion for science and fishing since he was a boy growing up on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Now a world famous theoretical physicist, with hundreds of scientific articles and several books of popular science to his credit, he felt it was time to connect with nature in less theoretical ways.

After seeing a fly-fishing class on the Dartmouth College green one day, he decided to learn to fly-fish, a hobby, he says, “that teaches humility.” In The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected, he travels the world to scientific conferences, fishing wherever he goes. Along the way, he ponders the myriad ways that physics informs the act of fishing and how, in its turn, fishing works as a lens into nature’s inner workings; how science engages with questions of meaning and spirituality, inspiring a sense of mystery and awe of the not-yet-known.

Personal and engaging, The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected is a scientist’s tribute to nature, a manifesto of humanity’s deep connection with and debt to Earth, as it explores the meaning of existence, from atom to trout to cosmos.

Marcelo Gleiser is the Appleton Professor of Natural Philosophy, and Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a recipient of the Presidential Faculty Fellows Award from the White House and NSF. He is the author of several books of popular science, including A Tear at the Edge of Creation, The Dancing Universe, and The Island of Knowledge.

DOLCE VITA CONFIDENTIAL Fellini, Loren, Pucci, Paparazzi, and the Swinging High Life of 1950s Rome

Praise for The Last Playboy:

“Fascinating… A compulsive read. Shawn Levy is one of our best popular culture journalist- historians.” —Lewis MacAdams, author of Birth of the Cool

When Fellini and Farrari, the Jet Set and Mastroianni, Pucci, Gucci, and Loren, Liz and Dick and the Paparazzi all made Rome go Boom!

Sometimes it all comes together: style and substance, passion and fashion, giant ambitions and little bits of daily life, reputation and reality. Rome in the ‘50s and ‘60s, the era of La Dolce Vi- ta, was one such time. And the story of what happened there, how it came about, and where all that energy, spectacle, and sparkle eventually went is a narrative of the Eternal City that has never been fully told.

In the decade after the end of World War II, Italy—and, especially, Rome—morphed, in the world’s imagination, from a grim and gritty neorealist tableaux of post-war privation to a glamorous banquet of sex, fashion, creative energy, and shattered taboos. This is a story about how a nation and its capital emerged from a decade of war—both global and civil—and, amidst the loss and rubble and pain, gave rise to the contemporary mélange of glitter, scandal, commerce, style, and sensation that we recognize as “popular culture,” of how the city of the Caesars and the Popes and the Blackshirts managed to galvanize the world’s attention as a showcase of elegance and sophistication that would come to define our current notion of mo- dernity.

Shawn Levy is the author of The Last Playboy; Ready, Steady, Go!; Rat Pack Confidential;and King of Comedy. He was previously the film critic for The Oregonian, and lives in Portland, Oregon.

44 John Mauceri THE ART OF CONDUCTING The Alchemy of Making Music

“Music is invisible. Perhaps it is logical that when leadership is needed for something invisi- ble, the appointed leader does so without making a sound. We make gestures in the air and music happens.”

The Art of Conducting delves into its history, technique, mysteries, and realities, positing that conductors are translators of universal ideas and spirit that can find meaning only in an indi- vidual’s willingness to receive and understand the message. For anyone who has ever been to a concert or watched a broadcast and wondered what that person front of it all was doing, The Art of Conducting will provide a unique and illuminating perspective on an aspect of music everyone sees but few people understand.

John Mauceri is a world-renowned conductor, producer, educator, and writer, having con- ducted for over fifty years. Since making his professional conducting debut almost half a cen- tury ago, Mauceri has appeared with most of the world’s great orchestras, guest conducted at the premiere opera houses, produced and musically supervised Tony and Olivier Award win- ning Broadway musicals, and taught at the most prestigious halls of academia. Through his varied career, he has taken the lead in the preservation and performance of many genres of music and has supervised/conducted important premieres by composers as diverse as Debus- sy, Stockhausen, Korngold, Hindemith, Bernstein, Sibelius, Ives, Elfman, and Shore. He is also a leading performer of music banned by the Third Reich and especially music of Hollywood émigré composers.

45 Paul Thomas Murphy PRETTY JANE AND THE VIPER OF KIDBROOKE LANE A True Story of Victorian Law and Disorder

Praise for Shooting Victoria:

“Beautifully researched and lucidly written. An entertaining study.” —The Sunday Times

On April 26th, 1871, a police constable stumbled upon a brutalized young woman kneeling on a muddy road, her face and skull horrifically maimed. The woman held out her hand before collapsing into the mud and slipping into a coma. Five days later, she died with her identity still unknown.

Within hours of her discovery on Kidbrooke Lane, scores of officers were involved in the in- vestigation, and Scotland Yard had sent one of its top detectives to lead it. After five days of gathering evidence, the police discovered the girl’s identity: Jane Maria Clouson, a maid in the house of the renowned Pook family… and she was two months’ pregnant with Edmund Pook’s child when she died.

In a three-day trial, the prosecution’s case fell apart, and the police and the government prose- cutors found themselves as much on trial as Pook. Pook won, and walked from the courtroom a free man. And the Clouson murder case remains unsolved to this day.

Murphy carefully reviews the evidence in the light of 21st century forensic science in order to identify Jane Clouson’s killer as Edmund Walter Pook and to vindicate the police and the gov- ernment prosecuting the case. Using a surprisingly abundant collection of primary sources— personal accounts, trial and hearing transcripts, and countless articles—Murphy aims to recre- ate the drama of the case as it unfolded, with its many twists and turns, from the discovery of the body to the final crack of the gavel—and beyond.

Paul Thomas Murphy is the author of Shooting Victoria, a 2012 New York Times Notable Book. He earned his BA from Boston College, his MA from McGill University, and his PhD from the University of Colorado where he taught interdisciplinary writing on Victorian topics at the University of Colorado and sits on the board of the Victorian Interdisciplinary Studies Associa- tion of the Western United States. Moving to America in 2008, Finnish journalist Anu Partanen quickly went from confident, suc- cessful professional to wary, self-doubting mess. She found that navigating the basics of every- day life—from buying a cell phone and filing taxes to education and childcare—was must more complicated and stressful than anything she encountered in her homeland. At first, she attributed her crippling anxiety to the difficulty of adapting to a freewheeling new culture. But as she got to know Americans better, she discovered they shared her deep apprehension. To understand why life is so different in the U.S. and Finland, Partanen began to look closely at both.

In The Nordic Theory of Everything, Partanen compares and contrasts life in the United States with life in the Nordic region, focusing on four key relationships—parents and children, men and women, employees and employers, and government and citizens. She debunks criticism that Nordic countries are socialist “nanny states,” revealing instead that it is we Americans who are far more enmeshed in unhealthy dependencies than we realize. As Partanen explains step by step, the Nordic approach allows citizens to enjoy more individual freedom and inde- pendence than we do.

Partanen wants to open Americans’ eyes to how much better things can be—to show her be- loved new country what it can learn from her homeland to reinvigorate and fulfill the promise of the American dream—to provide the opportunity to live a healthy, safe, economically se- cure, upwardly mobile life for everyone. Offering insights, advice, and solutions, this book makes a convincing argument that we can rebuild our society, rekindle our optimism, and re- store true freedom to our relationships and lives.

Anu Partanen is a Finnish-American journalist. In her native Finland she has held many posi- tions ranging from managing editor to columnist, features writer to news reporter, lecturer to on-air commentator. She has been living in the United States since 2008. In 2009 she was a vis- iting staff reporter at Fortune magazine through the Innovation Journalism Fellowship at Stan- ford University, and more recently, her work has been published in the New York Times and The Atlantic. Sport is about securing an edge—over history, over an opponent, over what has been done be- fore. Pushing limits and exceeding them is a defining characteristic of sport and a fulfillment of what it means to be human. At the same time, pushing boundaries inevitably results in some- times going over the edge, beyond what is acceptable, allowable or ethical. Navigating this boundary is no easy feat. But sport depends upon it.

We think we know the difference between cheating and not cheating, “clean” and “dirty,” in sports—but we don’t. Rapid developments in the 21st century and outdated sports governance have left sport in a state of crisis. Increasingly, athletes and teams seek a competitive edge in the world of elite sport and go over the edge in their pursuit of one.

The Edge is about the tension between the performance edge and the ethical edge, and how sport tries to manage the boundary between the two. Drawing on controversies straight out of the headlines, Roger Pielke, Jr. explores that edge and offers the reader a provocative but clear new understanding of 21st-century sport.

Roger Pielke, Jr. is head of the Sports Governance Center at the University of Colorado. He is author, co-author, or co-editor of seven books, including The Honest Broker: Making Sense of Sci- ence in Policy and Politics; The Climate Fix: What Scientists and Politicians Won’t Tell You About Global Warming; and Disasters and Climate Change. 48 Eric Ripert 32 YOLKS From My Mother’s Table to Working the Line

“Heartbreaking. Horrifying. Poignant. And inspiring. I’ve known Eric for years and I had no idea that this was how it all started. If you want to get a clear picture of where one gets the drive and dedication to be a truly great chef, there is no better or more harrowing an account.” —Anthony Bourdain

In a world where celebrity chefs are known as much for their salty talk and quick tempers as their food, Eric Ripert stands out. But before the restaurant and accolades, before he even know how to make a proper hollandaise sauce, Eric Ripert was a lonely young boy in the South of France whose world was falling apart.

Told that men had no place in the kitchen, Ripert would instead watch from the doorway as his mother rolled couscous by hand or his grandmother pressed out the buttery dough for the treat he loved above all others, tarte tatin. When an eccentric local chef named Jacques took him under his wing and into his kitchen, Ripert realized that food was more than just an es- cape: it was his calling. That passion would carry him through the drudgery of culinary school and into the high-pressure world of Paris’s most elite restaurants, where Ripert discovered that learning to cook well was the easy part—surviving the line was the battle.

Taking us from the South of France and the mountains of Andorra into the demanding kitch- ens of legendary Parisian chefs like Joel Robuchon and Dominique Bouchet, 32 Yolks is the ten- der and richly told story of how one of our greatest living chefs found himself—and his home—in the kitchen.

Eric Ripert is the chef and co-owner of the New York restaurant Le Bernadin, which holds three stars from the Michelin Guide and has maintained a four-star rating from the New York Times for over two decades. He is Vice Chairman of the board of City Harvest’s Food Council, a New York-based food rescue organization, as well as a recipient of the Legion d’Honneur, France’s highest honor. He serves as a regular guest judge on Bravo’s Top Chef and is the host of his own TV series, Avec Eric, which has won Emmy and James Beard awards. “I find that this is a particularly amazing moment to be alive, because there is a new intersection be- tween spirituality and science.” —Arianna Huffington in praise of Sadhguru’s work

Emerging from an ancient tradition, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev is a spiritual leader for our time—an era when science and technology, more than ever before in human history, have freed us from physical want, sparked intellectual achievement through propagation of infor- mation, and vastly enriched our social fabric.

Yet in many who have so much, there remains a core of disquiet. How many times in our lives has it happened that we lived full twenty-four hours blissfully, without a single moment of anxiety, agitation, irritation, or stress? How many days have we lived in utter pleasantness? It is not because we don’t’ know joy or peace or blissfulness. We know these things, but they are not sustainable: We are not able to stay there.

As there is a science and technology for physical wellbeing, there is a whole science and tech- nology for inner wellbeing. The science of activating our inner energies in such a way that our body, mind, and emotions function at their highest peak. Inner Engineering will explain the the- ory and practice of this “science” of inner wellbeing. For the first time, we have the necessary capability and resources to address almost every fundamental problem on this planet. The on- ly thing missing is human willingness to make it happen.

Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation, with two hundred-plus centers on six continents, has brought his spiritual practice of yoga to more than seven million people. His flagship ashram near Coimba- tore, India attracts a thousand visitors per day. Sadhguru’s popular spiritual tutorials on YouTube extend his outreach. His activities and affiliations with World Economic Forum, MIT, House of Lords, TED India, along with appearances on PBS, ABC News Australia, National Geographic International, BBC, Bloomberg, and CNBC, among others, contribute to his global platform.

“This intelligent, history-grounded investigation… finds dismaying evidence that social media has fos- tered a culture ‘very hostile’ to girls in which sexism, harassment, and cyberbullying have become the ‘new normal’… “ —Publishers Weekly, starred review

Instagram. Whisper. Yik Yak. Vine. YouTube. Kik. Ask.fm. Tinder. The dominant force in the lives of girls coming of age in America today is social media. What it is doing to an entire gen- eration of young women is the subject of award-winning Vanity Fair writer Nancy Jo Sales’s riveting and explosive American Girls, already a New York Times bestseller.

With extraordinary intimacy and precision, Sales captures what it feels like to be a girl in America today. Sales crisscrossed America, speaking to more than two hundred girls, ages thirteen to nineteen, and documenting a massive change in the way girls are growing up, a phenomenon that transcends race, geography, and household income. American Girls provides a disturbing portrait of the end of childhood as we know it and of the inexorable and ubiqui- tous experience of a new kind of adolescence—one dominated by new social and sexual norms, where a girl’s first crushes and romance occur in an accelerated electronic environ- ment; where issues of identity are magnified by social platforms that provide instantaneous judgment.

Provocative and urgent, American Girls is destined to ignite a much-needed conversation about how we can help our daughters and sons negotiate unprecedented new challenges.

Whether you’re a Fortune 500 CEO or busy stay-at-home mom, the secret to being more effec- tive and living a happier, healthier life is to hurry up and slow down, or unplug. As Ann Lamott said, “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”

Contrary to what every Type-A person thinks, studies show that you can actually be more effective by doing less, by unplugging from the chaos of your life for just minutes a day. This can be done effortlessly—even while waiting in line at Starbucks—through Meditation. But Unplug is not the book for anyone who loves Buddha and woo-woo talk. It’s a revolutionary book by spiritual entrepreneur and founder and CEO of a popular LA-based meditation stu- dio, Suze Yalof Schwartz. The first book that shows the overwhelmed and over-worked Type- A person how and why to unplug in order to recharge.

Experts ranging from Dr. Oz to Harvard scientists to Vogue magazine claim meditation can make us happier, healthier, more effective, and even smarter. And Unplug offers a no-nonsense approach that will appeal to anyone, even if—no, especially if—you believe you think too much, have no time, can’t sit still, or that it’s just not you. In it, Suze debunks a lot of the mis- perceptions about meditation, including the notion that you need to sit still for long periods for it to work. She also shares the incredible benefits you’ll experience, the proof and science to back up how meditation works, as well as tools and techniques to easily incorporate quick-hit meditations into daily life.

Suze Yalof Schwartz is the founder and CEO of unplug meditation. Before becoming a spiritual entrepreneur, Suze enjoyed decades as a fashion editor, director, and stylist. She has worked at Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, and Glamour, and was a regular on many morning TV shows. Suze had an aha moment in late 2012 when she wanted to learn how to meditate and couldn’t find a place that fit her schedule, budget, or aesthetic. So she decided to build it herself.

52 Casey Sherman & Michael J. Tougias ABOVE AND BEYOND Two Elite Pilots, Two Top Secret Missions, and Two Superpowers on the Brink of Nuclear War

Saturday, October 27, 1962. Day 12 of the Cuban Missile Crisis. American intelligence suspects that several Soviet missiles on Cuba are not fully operational and confirm that three Russian submarines have just breached the surface near the US quarantine line. Soviet personnel in Washington, DC and New York have been given orders to destroy all sensitive documents in advance of war with the US. The Joint Chief of Staffs are ready to order massive airstrikes on Cuba, followed by a full-scale land invasion by US troops, the largest concentration of Ameri- can soldiers since the Korean War.

Major Rudolph Anderson, a decorated combat pilot, embarks on a top secret mission from McCoy Air Force Base, Florida, to fly his U-2 spy plane over Cuba to photograph evidence that five Soviet missile sites are up and running. A committed pacifist, Anderson knows that the last pilot to fly over Cuba two days before was fired upon by two Russian missiles.

At the same time, thousands of miles away in Alaska, Anderson’s friend and fellow pilot, Colonel Charles Maultsby, climbs into his U-2 spy plane at Eielson Air Force Base and takes off on what is believed to be a routine mission to the North Pole to gather radioactive air samples from a recent Russian nuclear test. But just after 12 pm, Maultsby suddenly becomes disorient- ed and steers his plane into Soviet airspace.

In the White House, President John F. Kennedy, young, untested, and burned by criticism over the botched Bay of Pigs invasion the previous year, is briefed of the situation shortly thereaf- ter. Detection of Maultsby’s missing U-2 by Soviet Air Defense could be seen as an act of war. But as the president and his advisors wrestle with this information, more bad news comes in— that another U-2 has gone missing—this time over Cuba…

Praise for Galileo’s Daughter:

“Sobel is a master storyteller… she brings a great scientist to life.” —The NY Times Book Review

The Glass Universe tells the story of a little known but highly important and colorful chapter in the history of astronomy. It centers on the Harvard College Observatory from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, when first one, then a few, then a dozen women at a time worked as astronom- ical “computers” (a job description since rendered obsolete by machines of the same name).

From their assigned niche in the traditionally male enclave of the Observatory, these women made original discoveries in astronomy that attracted worldwide acclaim. In a time when women did not yet have the right to vote, they helped discern what stars were made of, they identified and classified new categories of stars, and they found a way to measure distances across space by starlight, so that the true vastness of the universe yawned open for the first time, leaving astronomers agape.

Dava Sobel is the acclaimed author of the international bestsellers A More Perfect Heaven, Lon- gitude, Galileo’s Daughter, and The Planets, and the coauthor of The Illustrated Longitude. Her books have been published in 29 territories abroad. She lives in East Hampton, New York.

54 Sylvia Tara THE SECRET LIFE OF FAT The Science Behind the Body’s Least Understood Organ and What It Means For You

This groundbreaking work of practical, popular science reveals that fat is a much smarter or- gan than we think.

Fat is an obsession, a dirty word, a subject of national handwringing—and, according to bio- chemist Sylvia Tara, our least understood body part. The Secret Life of Fat brings together his- torical perspectives with cutting-edge research to reveal fat’s true identity: an endocrine organ that is critical to our health.

Fat triggers puberty, enables our reproductive and immune systems, and even affects brain size. It’s so critical, in fact, that our own body endowed it with self-defense measures: fat can grow back despite what we eat using stem cells; it influences our appetites; and it uses bacte- ria, genetics, and even contagious viruses to expand itself.

Although we spend $60 billion annually fighting fat, our efforts are often misinformed and misdirected. Tara shows how we can finally control our elusive adversary by knowing it better. Her insights will spark a revolution in our physical, and mental, health.

Sylvia Tara holds a PhD in biochemistry from the University of California, San Diego, and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. She was a consultant with McKinsey and has worked at the world’s largest biotechnology companies. She lives in .

“Meticulously-researched, Tougias and O’Leary take you where few historians dare… This is priceless history, a fresh story in a modern era, two-hundred fast-paced pages of ‘you-are-there.’” —Adam Makos, author of A Higher Call

A true story of men and women pitted against the sea during World War II—and an unfor- gettable portrait of the determination of the human spirit.

On May 19, 1942, a U-boat in the Gulf of Mexico stalked its prey fifty miles from New Orleans. Captained by twenty-nine-year-old Iron Cross and King’s Cross recipient Erich Wurdemann, the submarine set its sights on the freighter Heredia with sixty-two souls on board.

Most aboard were merchant seamen, but there were also a handful of civilians, including the Downs family: Ray and Ina, and their two children, eight-year-old Sonny and eleven-year-old Lucille. Fast asleep in their berths, the Downs family had no idea that two torpedoes were headed their way. When the ship exploded, chaos ensued—and each family member had to find their own path to survival.

Including the original, unpublished material from Commander Wurdemann’s war diary, the story provides balance and perspective by chronicling the daring mission of the U-boat—and its commander’s decision-making—in the Gulf of Mexico. An inspiring historical narrative, So Close to Home tells the story of the Downs family as they struggle against sharks, hypothermia, drowning, and dehydration in their effort to survive the aftermath of this deadly attach off the American coast.

Michael J. Tougias is the author and co-author of twenty-three non-fiction books, including several true survival-at-sea adventures, such as Rescue of the Bounty, Fatal Forecast, Overboard!, A Storm Too Soon, and The Finest Hours. Alison O’Leary is a former reporter for the Boston Globe, a magazine editor, and a freelance writer. Her work has appeared in newspapers and magazines across the country.

Years ago, Rachel had a crush on Henry Jones. The day before she moved away, she tucked a love letter into his favorite book in his family’s bookshop. She waited. But Henry never came.

Now, Rachel has returned to the city—and to the bookshop—to work alongside the boy she’d rather not see, if at all possible, for the rest of her life. She’s lost her connection to friends and family. She can’t see the future.

Henry’s future isn’t looking too promising either. His girlfriend’s dumped him. The bookstore is slipping away. And his family is breaking apart.

As Henry and Rachel work side by side—surrounded by books, watching love stories unfold, exchanging letters between the pages—they find hope in each other. Because life may be un- controllable, even unbearable sometimes. But it’s possible that words, and love, and second chances are enough.

61 Kirsty Eagar SUMMER SKIN

“Smart, funny and ferociously sexy… A brilliant story, a provoking read—I couldn’t put it down.” —Cath Crowley, author of Graffiti Moon

Jess Gordon and Mitch Crawford are both studying at the University of Queensland, but that’s all they have in common. Jess and her friends are modern day riot grrls. Mitch and his mates are rugby boys, renowned for predatory behavior.

When their paths first cross they’re combative, but just for a moment Jess and Mitch recognize the outsider in each other. She feels old-fashioned in a world of casual hook ups, sexting and internet porn, wary of getting involved again in the wake of a bad break-up. Mitch is finding it hard to live up to expectations after the death of his best friend, but he’s struggling more with keeping his own culpability a secret.

So begins a slow, careful circling, a number of encounters they keep secret from their peers. Summer Skin takes an honest look at lust, trust, love, and double standards. It asks the question: In a world where sex is pushed all the time, has intimacy become the risk?

Kirsty Eagar is the critically acclaimed author of Saltwater Vampires, Night Beach, and Raw Blue. After completing a master’s degree in economics, she worked at the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Bank of England before changing careers, wanting a life where she could surf every day. Now, after fighting so hard to escape the Jewel, Violet must do everything in her power to return to save not only Hazel, but the future of the Lone City.

THE CERULEAN

Praise for The Jewel:

“With its taut, provocative plot and irresistible characters, The Jewel had me tearing through the pages right up to the final, startling twist.” —Andrea Cremer, author of The Inventor’s Secret

Sera is Cerulean. Her blood is magic. She lives in the sky, in a beautiful floating paradise popu- lated only by women. Every five hundred years, the High Priestess chooses a young girl to be sacrificed—flung over the edge, bleeding—for the protection of the City. And today, the High Priestess chose Sera.

It is an honor, Sera’s orange mother told her after the ceremony. It is a necessity, her green mother said, as they left the High Priestess’s temple. Her purple mother said nothing.

On the day of the ceremony, Sera says goodbye to her mothers and her best friend, Leela. With blood pouring from her wrists, she plummets toward the surface, blazing like a falling star— yet she’s surprised to find that the fall doesn’t kill her. Instead, she’s found by Leo and Agnes, the son and daughter of an industrialist from the surface city of Kaolin who are on safari to find new creatures for their father’s freak show. The arrogant Leo is doing so to win the re- spect of his father; Agnes, out of scientific curiosity. Sera tries to communicate with them—and is shocked to finally see a male!—but her voice only comes out a whisper in the dense atmos- phere of the surface. Leo roughly ties her up and they make their way back toward the city.

When they return with their prize, their father is delighted and Sera is horrified to see the way they treat the other magical beings they’ve captured. As the cruel training for the show begins, Agnes finds a way to communicate with Sera and realizes that she is sentient after all—and that she must help her escape her cruel fate...

Lexa Hillyer SPINDLE FIRE

Set in a heightened version of medieval France, Spindle Fire is an enthralling re-imagining of a classic faerie story like readers have never seen it before.

Half-sisters Isabelle and Aurora are polar opposites: Isabelle is the king’s headstrong illegiti- mate daughter, whose sight was tithed by faeries; Aurora, beautiful and sheltered, was tithed her sense of touch and voice on the same day. Despite their differences, the sisters have always been incredibly close. And then everything changes, with a single drop of Aurora’s blood— and a sleep so deep it cannot be broken. As the Faerie Queen and her army of Vultures prepare to march, Isabelle must race to find a prince who can awaken her sister with the kiss of True Love, and seal their two kingdoms in an alliance against the queen.

While Isabelle crosses land and sea, unearthly, thorny vines rise up the palace walls, and whis- pers of revolt travel in ashes on the wind. The kingdom falls to ruin under layers of snow. Meanwhile, Aurora wakes up in a strange and enchanted realm, where a mysterious hunter may hold the secret to her escape… or the reason for her to stay.

Spindle Fire is a tour de force fantasy set in the dwindling, deliciously corrupt world of the fae, and featuring two truly unforgettable heroines.

When you imagine a programmer, what comes to mind? Most likely, the image will be an anti-social young man wearing glasses and staring at a screen. Women and girls are constantly bombarded with signals—based on very real statistics—that coding isn’t for them. But that’s a myth. While there have been major strides to educate girls in STEM fields, coding still has the most drastic gender imbalance, one that has grown since the ‘80s.

Reshma Saujani founded Girls Who Code to change all that. She discovered that when girls are exposed to inspiring role models and real-life applications of computer science, they’re motivated to pursue paths that their mothers may never have considered. With this in mind, she has a goal to teach 1 million girls to code by 2020. (And with the support of people like Hillary Clinton, Sheryl Sandberg, and Jeff Bezos, there’s no doubt that she’ll be successful.)

Aimed at girls 12 and older, the Girls Who Code book will seek to demystify computer science and give readers a first-hand look into what it’s like to work as a computer scientists across various fields. It will include engaging stories featuring women and girls who have developed passions for computer science, along with other resources, strategies, project ideas, and tips for learning code.

Reshma’s TED talk on teaching girls bravery, not perfection, hit more than 1,000,000 views in less than one month.

Reshma Saujani is the founder and CEO of Girls Who Code and the former Deputy Public Advocate of New York City. Today, she has galvanized industry leaders to close the gender gap in STEM education and empower girls to pursue careers in technology and engineering through innovative curriculum, national clubs, and immersive summer programs. Reshma and Girls Who Code have been featured in the New York Times, Time Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, along with many other media outlets. Reshma was recently listed as one of Fortune’s 2015 40 Under 40 and one of Fortune Magazine’s World’s Greatest Leaders.

And then Anna meets the Swallow Man. He is a mystery, strange and tall, a skilled deceiver with more than a little magic up his sleeve. And when the soldiers in the streets look at him, they see what he wants them to see.

The Swallow Man is not Anna’s father—she knows that very well—but she also knows that, like her father, he’s in danger of being taken, and like her father, he has a gift for languages: Polish, Russian, German, Yiddish, even Bird. Noelle Stevenson & Todd Casey 4 WIZARDS

Praise for Nimona:

“Noelle Stevenson has a knack for capturing the humor and the heart in a situation in just a few panels.” —Rainbow Rowell, author of Eleanor and Park

An eccentric old wizard Hugo prefers to spends his days alone practicing ancient spells, en- chanting his furniture to be alive, and feuding with his next-door neighbor over property lines…until the Wizard Council orders him to take on a new apprentice, Ivy—she’s sarcastic, withdrawn, and seems entirely disinterested in magic.

But Ivy’s got a secret: she’s a medium, and she appears to be channeling a malicious spirit named Nightshade who acts as her alter-ego. Nightshade is unpredictable, uncontrollable, and a re- al jerk to boot. When Ivy lets Nightshade take control, she’s fast, she’s strong, she’s confident, and she can even fly and spit green fire. Not a bad trade-off, right? Ivy doesn’t think so. She wants Nightshade gone, and she wants Hugo to help her do it. With some help from their neighbor Zan, a fearsome disgraced paladin, and her apprentice Bram- bles, a happy-go-lucky young druid raised by Tree-Monks, what could go wrong?

Henry Page is a hopeless romantic and pop culture aficionado, who always thought falling in love would be more like the movies. Grace Town—who’s unwashed, dressed in guy’s clothing, and walks with a cane—is unlike any leading lady he’s ever obsessed over. So this is certainly not a story of love at first sight. But it is a love story. (Well. Depending on who you ask.)

It’s senior year and Henry and Grace are both offered positions as editors of their high school newspaper. The more time they spend together, the more the mystery of Grace begins to captivate him. Why does she visit a graveyard every afternoon? What secret does she keep locked away in her bedroom? Above all, why is Grace Town so deeply sad?

Before long, Henry is smitten, consumed by his almost-but-not-quite-requited infatuation with the strangest girl he’s ever met. Unfortunately for him, Grace isn’t looking for romance. Three months ago, her boyfriend Dominic died in the same car crash that injured her leg. Grace lived. Dom didn’t. Love triangles are always ghastly. They’re even worse when the girl you’ve fallen for is torn between you and her still-decomposing ex.

Undeterred by Grace’s erratic stance on relationships, Henry summons all his courage to convince her that their flickering, bittersweet spark could heal her grief and grow into a grand love story worthy of the silver screen. With disastrous consequences, naturally.

Kerry Winfrey

LOVE AND OTHER ALIEN EXPERIENCES

In this heartwarming debut by HelloGiggles blogger Kerry Winfrey with echoes of Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything, a young agoraphobe begins a journey of first love that leads her to the true meaning of home—just by taking one small step outside of her house.

Her name is Mallory Sullivan. Her therapist says she has an anxiety disorder. Her brother says she’s an “optimistic recluse.” Everybody else says she’s a freak.

And they kind of have a point, because Mallory hasn’t left the house in 67 days and only attend class via the webcam on her laptop. The person she talks to the most other than her mom and brother is the completely obnoxious BeamMeUp, and all they do is argue on New Mexico’s premiere alien message board.

But after yesterday, Mallory has something: a chance. If she can win the homecoming crown by convincing resident hot popular guy and Friday Night Lights spawn Brad Kirkpatrick to go as her date, then maybe #stayathome will never appear next to the name @Mallory_Sullivan ever again.

But first, she has to leave her room.

Kerry Winfrey grew up in Bellville, Ohio, where she spent most of her time reading inappro- priate books at the library. Not much has changed. Kerry writes for HelloGiggles and blogs at welcometoladyville.com. She lives in Columbus, Ohio with her husband and their dog.

It’s your fat cells that are to blame for causing excessive hunger and increased weight. By eating the wrong foods, our fat cells are triggered to take in too many calories for themselves, setting off a dangerous chain reaction of increased appetite and a slower metabolism. Now, Harvard Medical School’s David Ludwig, M.D., Ph.D., offers an impeccably researched diet that will turn dieting on its head, teaching readers to reprogram their fat cells, tame hunger, boost metabolism, and lose weight—for good. Always Hungry? was published by Grand Central in January and has sold to Colibri Publishing House/Bulgaria, Spektrum/Holland, Orion Books/UK, Marabout/France, Goldmann Verlag/ Germany, Mondadori/Italy, Spoleczny Instytut/Poland, Zahar/Brazil, Nova Knjiga Plus/Serbia, Lektor’ca Natasa Purkat/Slovenia, Oceano/Latin America, Jarir Bookstore/Arabic, Grup Media Litera/ 79 Romania, Mozaik knjiga/Croatia, CommonLife Publishing/Taiwan, Planeta/Spain. THE NOVEMBER CRIMINALS

“Munson has written one of the funniest, most heartfelt novels in recent memory...” —The Chicago Tribune

For a high school senior, Addison Schacht has a lot of preoccupations. Like getting into college. Selling drugs to his classmates. His complicated relationship with his best friend (not his girlfriend) Digger. And he’s just added another to the list: the murder of his classmate Kevin Broadus, and his own absurd, obsessive plan to investigate the death. When presented with an essay question on his college applica- tion—What are your best and worst qualities?—Addison finds himself provoked into giving his final, unapologetic say about all of the above and more. Addison finds good company among American liter- ature’s cadre of unsettled, restless youth, from Huck Finn to Holden Caulfield. The November Criminals takes on the terrain of the classic adolescent truth-telling novel and—with nerve and erudition—carves out its own unique territory. A film, starring Chloe Grace Moretz and The Fault in Our Stars’ Ansel Elgort, is currently in post-production with Sony Pictures Worldwide, with an antici- pated release late in 2016. The November Criminals was published by Simon & Schuster in October and has sold to Sharp Point Press/Taiwan, Hachette/ANZ, Little, Brown/UK, Sperling & Supfer/Italy, Hayakawa/Japan, Nasza Ksiegarnia/Poland, Planeta/Brazil, Presenca/Portugal, AST/Russia, Oceano/ Spain. William Styron MY GENERATION Collected Nonfiction

“If Styron is best remembered for his fiction… his extensive output of short nonfiction stands as additional testament to his enormous talent and range of interest.” —Kirkus, starred review

Here are fifty years of Styron’s essays, memoirs, reviews, op-eds, articles, eulogies, and speeches, reflect- ing the same brilliant style and informed thinking that he brought to his towering fiction and to a deeply committed public life. Including many newly collected and never-before-published items, this compen- dium ranges from the original mission statement of The Paris Review, which Styron helped found in 1953, to a 2001 tribute to his friend Philip Roth—creating an essential overview of this post-World War II world of art and letters. In these pages, Styron writes vividly of childhood days in Virginia spent going to the movies, not reading books. And he writes as few others have about midlife battles with clinical depression. The beginnings of his masterpieces The Confessions of Nat Turner and Sophie’s Choice are chronicled here, along with the controversy that greeted the former upon its 1967 publication. These fascinating pieces bring readers closer to this writer and the world he observed, interacted with, and changed. My Generation was published by Random House in June. 80 Diane Williams

FINE, FINE, FINE, FINE, FINE

“Diane Williams is one of the true living heroes of the… avant-garde. Her fiction makes very familiar things very, very weird.” —Jonathan Franzen, author of Purity

The very short stories of Diane Williams have been aptly called “folk tales that hammer like a nail gun,” and these 39 new ones are sharper than ever. They are unsettling, yes, frequently revelatory, and more often than not downright funny—even though within these covers a mother dies, an illicit love affair is revealed, a ghost pays a visit, and police are called to the scene. Not a single moment here is what you might expect. While there is immense pleasure to be found in Williams’s spot-on observations about how we behave in our highest and lowest moments, the heart of the drama beats in the language of short fiction’s grand master, whose originality, precision, and power bring the familiar into startling and enchanting relief. Fine, Fine, Fine, Fine, Fine was published by McSweeney’s in January.
