Nathaniel Dresden never really got along with his father, an infamous civil rights lawyer who defended criminals and spearheaded protest movements. As an act of rebellion, Natty joined the U.S. Army and served in Iraq, coming back with a chest full of commendations and a head full of disturbing memories.

But when his father is found murdered near the peaceful confines of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, Natty is forced to deal with the troubled legacy of their unresolved relationship. He also has to fend off the growing suspicions of NYPD Detective Lourdes Robles, a brash Latina cop with something to prove, who thinks Natty might bear some responsibility for his father’s death. Though truth be told, the list of people—cops and criminals—who wanted David Dresden out of the way is long. The search for answers leads Natty and Lourdes into an urban labyrinth where they must confront each other—and the brutal truths that could destroy them both.

Mary Clyde NO MORNING SUN

Praise for Mary Clyde:

“Clyde's writing has many strengths, but the greatest one is her ability to transform a shallow experi- ence into something resembling hope. That she does so with intelligence and wit makes this collection as good as they get.” –The New York Times

The Wilson family's world is indisputably transformed on a fall evening in the Arizona desert outside of Phoenix. Jack flips his SUV —that much is certain. To him an enormous light elbows out the black sky with a gold, purple, gray cloud. Mushroom beauty. Jack’s parents' world de- viates from Jack's when they find their son hospitalized in a coma —a man who is Jack but no longer Jack.

In a literary tour de force in the tradition of Cormack McCarthy’s The Road, the reader discov- ers the patient’s mind is not totally at rest. In Jack’s dream world, the Wilson family is fleeing the contaminated city in the aftermath of a nuclear bomb explosion. Meanwhile on a different plane, his parents cope with his catastrophic injuries in the hospital. These divergent worlds are not as contradictory as they seem and blend to inform each other, drawn together and bound by the fierce love and loyalty of the Wilson family.

Rene Denfeld THE CHILD FINDER

—The HarperCollins Lead Read for Fall 2017—

“[A] gorgeous, haunting gem of a novel. Raw and real yet wrapped in a fairy tale, as lovely and as chilling as the snow." —Erin Morgenstern, author of The Night Circus

“Where are you, Madison Culver? Flying with the angels, a silver speck on a wing? Are you dreaming, buried under snow? Or—is it possible—you are still alive?”

Three years ago, Madison Culver disappeared when her family was choosing a Christmas tree in Oregon’s Skookum National Forest. She would be eight-years-old by now—if she has sur- vived. Desperate to find their beloved daughter, certain someone took her, the Culvers turn to Naomi, a private investigator with an uncanny talent for locating the lost and missing. Known to the police and a select group of parents as “the Child Finder,” Naomi is their last hope.

Naomi’s methodical search takes her deep into the icy, mysterious forest in the Pacific North- west, and into her own fragmented past. Once upon a time, she was a lost girl, too. As Naomi slowly uncovers the truth behind Madison’s disappearance, shards of a dark dream pierce the defenses that have protected her, reminding her of a terrible loss she feels but cannot remem- ber. If she finds Madison, will Naomi ultimately unlock the secrets of her own life?

Told in the alternating voices of Naomi and a deeply imaginative child, The Child Finder is a breathtaking, exquisitely rendered literary page-turner about redemption, the line between reality and memories and dreams, and the human capacity to survive.

HarperCollins has chosen the novel as its singular, company-wide “Lead Read” for Fall 2017 (across all imprints), a great sign of in-house enthusiasm. They have also signed up her new novel, The Strawberry Palace, which will be the compelling next chapter in Naomi’s story.

His life is upended; Oliver loses his wife, home, and faith. Three years after his son’s death, Oliver lives in a shack without electricity and frequents the soup kitchen where he used to volunteer. Elin Hilderbrand THE IDENTICALS

Praise for Here’s to Us:

“…[her] straightforward style pulls the reader into the minds of her characters, and all the secrets and sorrows that create the universal messiness of major family events." — Publishers Weekly

From New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand, a summertime story about identical twins who couldn't be any less alike — on two different islands.

Nantucket is only two and a half hours away from Martha's Vineyard by ferry. But the two islands might as well be worlds apart for a set of identical twin sisters who have been at odds for years. Just because twins look exactly the same doesn't mean they're anything alike—and Tabitha and Harper Frost have spent their whole lives trying to prove this point. When a fami- ly crisis forces them to band together—or at least appear to—the twins come to realize that the special bond that they share is more important than the resentments that have driven them apart.

A story of new loves, old battles, and a threat that gives a whole new meaning to the term sib- ling rivalry, The Identicals is Elin Hilderbrand at her page-turning best.

Elin Hilderbrand is the author of several New York Times bestselling novels, including Here’s To Us, The Rumor, Beautiful Day, Summerland, Silver Girl, The Island, A Summer Affair, and Bare- foot. Lia Hills THE CRYING PLACE

“[A] brave and devastating novel of grief, place and belonging. I was swept up in her voice… the novel doesn’t let you go.” —Christos Tsiolkas, author of The Slap and Barracuda

“In the rear vision, the road was golden and straight and even, its length making sense of the sky, of the vast black cloud that was set to engulf it. I pulled over and got out. Stared at it, this gleaming snake — where I'd been, where it was going. The route that Jed had once taken.”

After years of traveling, Saul is trying to settle down. But one night he receives the devastating news of the death of his oldest friend, Jed, recently returned from working in a remote Aborig- inal community. Saul's discovery in Jed's belongings of a photo of a woman convinces him that she may hold the answers to Jed's fate. So he heads out on a journey into the heart of the Aus- tralian desert to find the truth, setting in motion a powerful story about the landscapes that shape us and the ghosts that lay their claim.

The Crying Place is a haunting, luminous novel about love, country, and the varied ways in which we grieve. In its unflinching portrayal of the borderlands where worlds come together, where the past and present overlap, it speaks of the places and moments that bind us. The myths that draw us in. And, ultimately, the ways in which we find our way home.

Lia Hills is a poet, novelist, and translator. Her debut novel, The Beginner's Guide to Living, was released to critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the Victorian, Queensland and Western Australian Premiers' Literary Awards and the New Zealand Post Book Awards. But the very real Beth, the woman behind Lizzy’s persona, is a little more complicated: Her move back to hasn’t gone quite according to plan; her new house is a dump; her mother-in-law hates her, and her own mother lives way too close; her husband isn’t quite the man she thought he was; her two teenage daughters are busy making their own lives.

“[H]e’s as riotous as Houellebecq, and you don’t need a translator, only fireproof gloves for turning the pages.” —Jonathan Lethem, The Scofield

They live through an era of New York punctuated by the deaths of Warhol, Basquiat, Wojnarowicz, and Tompkins Square Park. Adeline is fiercely protective of Baby, but he soon takes over his own education. Once just a kid off the bus from Wisconsin, Baby relishes ketamine-fueled clubbing nights and acid days, and falls deep into the Club Kid twilight zone of sexual excess.

Rahul Mehta NO OTHER WORLD

“What a compelling, magical, big-hearted, lyrical book. Rahul Mehta is an expansive and mesmerizing talent - he sees things generously, from all angles, and makes the reader care, and feel, deeply.” —George Saunders, author of Tenth of December

From the author of the prize-winning collection Quarantine, No Other World is a debut novel set in rural America and India in the 1980s and ’90s, part coming-of-age story about a gay Indian American boy, part family saga about an immigrant family’s struggles to find a sense of be- longing, identity, and hope.

Twelve-year-old Kiran Shah, the American-born son of Indian immigrants, longingly observes his prototypically American neighbors, the Bells. He attends school with Kelly Bell, but he’s powerfully drawn—in a way he does not yet understand—to her charismatic father, Chris.

Leaving childhood behind, Kiran finds himself perpetually on the outside—as an Indian American torn between two cultures and as a gay man in a homophobic society. In the wake of an emotional breakdown, he travels to India, where he forms an intense bond with a teenage hijra, a member of India’s ancient transgender community. With her help, Kiran begins to pull together the pieces of his broken past.

Sweeping and emotionally complex, No Other World is a haunting meditation on our responsi- bilities to our families and to ourselves, the difficult choices we make, and the painful cost of claiming our true selves.

Gin Phillips FIERCE KINGDOM

“It tore at every maternal fiber in my body. I couldn’t put it down.” —Fiona Barton, author of The Widow

An electrifying novel about the primal and unyielding bond between a mother and her son, and the lengths she’ll go to protect him.

The zoo is nearly empty as Joan and her four-year-old son soak up the last few moments of playtime. But what Joan sees as she hustles her son toward the exit gate minutes before closing time sends her sprinting back into the zoo, her child in her arms. And for the next three hours—the entire scope of the novel—she keeps on running. Suddenly, mother and son are as trapped as the animals. Joan’s intimate knowledge of this place that filled early motherhood with happy diversions—the hidden pathways and under-renovation exhibits, the best spots on the carousel and overstocked snack machines—is all that keeps them a step ahead of danger.

A masterful thrill ride —from its tender moments of grace to its savage power—Fierce King- dom asks where the boundary is between our animal instinct to survive and our human duty to protect one another. For whom should a mother risk her life?

Ivy Pochoda WONDER VALLEY

Praise for Visitation Street:

“Pochoda pulls us deeply into this transfixing tale of visitations both alarming and liberating.” — Booklist (starred review)

From the acclaimed author of Visitation Street, a visionary and masterful portrait of contempo- rary in all its facets, from the Mojave desert to the Pacific, from the 110 to Skid Row.

Los Angeles, the 110 during peak morning rush hour: an endless sea of commuters. But this traffic jam is different—a runner is dodging and weaving between the cars at an astonishing clip—and it sets the course for a handful of Angelenos, all of whom are in desperate need of a change.

There's Ren, just out of juvie, who travels to LA in search of his mother. There's Owen and James, teenage twins who live in a desert commune, where their father, Patrick, a self- proclaimed healer, holds a powerful sway over his disciples. There's Britt, harboring secrets of her own, who shows up at the commune and captures Patrick's attention. There's Tony, a bored and unhappy lawyer who is inspired by the runner. And there's Blake, a violent drifter hiding in the desert, whose path collides with Patrick’s in a shocking way.

Whether running away from their past, or looking to reclaim their future, these characters, im- bued with endless amounts of empathy and wisdom, will do anything for a semblance of peace. Wonder Valley is a sweeping portrait of angst, violence, heartache, and yearning—a mas- terpiece by a writer on the rise.

Ivy Pochoda grew up in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn and lived in Red Hook for several years. She is the author of Visitation Street and The Art of Disappearing. She attended Harvard University, where she studied classical Greek. She also holds an MFA from Bennington College in Fiction. Karen Rinaldi THE END OF MEN

"The End of Men is in every way marvelous. A sharply drawn story—or more accurately, stories— that gets everything right. Warm hearted but painfully close to the bone." —Anthony Bourdain, author of Kitchen Confidential and Appetites

New Yorkers Isabel, Anna, Beth, and Maggie aren’t afraid of having it all. And they do: satisfy- ing careers, children they love, adoring men, and one another. What could possibly go wrong?

But trouble begins one morning when Beth arrives at the headquarters of Red Hot Mama—her sexy lingerie line for pregnant women—to find morally enraged protesters outside. While Beth and her publicist Maggie are invigorated by the press, CFO Anna, already overwhelmed by work and home commitments, starts to lose it. And when one of the protesters shows more sinister intents, they are all forced to take action.

Love lives are no less complicated: Anna’s sister Isabel is married and pregnant but craving the affections of an old, unconsummated flame. Maggie, whose husband left his previous wife for her, has decided she’d like to send him back. And Beth must contend with the impending death of her closeted ex-husband, the father of her adored daughter.

These fierce friends take on the world with tenacity, astuteness, and laughter and aren’t afraid to live life on their own terms. A smart, insightful, incendiary read, The End of Men challenges the boundaries set by our world and, more importantly, those that we impose on ourselves.

Karen Rinaldi is the Publisher of Harper Wave, an imprint she founded in 2012, and a senior vice president at HarperCollins Publishers. While she has worked in the publishing industry for over two decades as a publisher, editor, and content creator, this is her first time in the role of novelist. Karen also wrote the story for Maggie's Plan, the 2016 film inspired by The End of Men. She and her family split their time between New York City, New Jersey, and (whenever possible) Costa Rica.

Krysten Ritter BONFIRE

From actress, producer, and writer Krysten Ritter, a psychological suspense novel about a woman forced to confront her past in the wake of small-town corruption.

It has been ten years since Abby Williams left home and scrubbed away all visible evidence of her small town roots. Now working as an environmental lawyer in Chicago, she has a thriving career, a modern apartment, and her pick of meaningless one-night stands.

But when a new case takes her back home to Barrens, Indiana, the life Abby painstakingly cre- ated begins to crack. Tasked with investigating Optimal Plastics, the town's most high-profile company and economic heart, Abby begins to find strange connections to the town’s biggest scandal from more than a decade ago involving the popular Kaycee Mitchell and her closest friends—just before Kaycee disappeared for good.

Dalia Rosenfeld THE WORLDS WE THINK WE KNOW

Praise for Dalia Rosenfeld:

“I’ve read Dalia Rosenfeld’s stories with huge admiration: the tone, the perfectly balanced control of eve- ry sentence in the space made for it by the sentence before, the quiet implicitness of every gesture, the scenes so well observed that they seem like indelible steel engravings, and especially, whole lives sublimi- nally yet substantively limned by a phrased or two. Flying beyond what we are used to calling ‘conventional realism,’ Rosenfeld points to a shimmering spot just beyond the horizon, and leaves us yearning. Is there a name for what she does? To find out, I think one must consult Borges. Or Italo Cal- vino. Or little fragments of Sebald.” —Cynthia Ozick, author of Heir to the Glimmering World

Fiercely funny and entirely original, this debut collection of stories takes readers from the United States to Israel—and back—to examine the mystifying reaches of our own minds and hearts.

The characters of The Worlds We Think We Know are swept up by forces beyond their control: war, adulthood, family—and their own emotions, as powerful as the sandstorm that gusts through these stories. In Ohio, a college student cruelly enlists the help of the boy who loves her to attract the attention of her own crush. In Israel, a young American woman visits an un- communicative Holocaust survivor and falls in love with a soldier. In Virginia, a professor’s wife is pursued by her husband’s lesbian colleague—unhappily so, until she learns that the colleague is also her literary soulmate. And from an unnamed Eastern European country, a woman haunts the husband who left her behind for a new life in New York City.

In Dalia Rosenfeld’s hands, the foreign becomes familiar and the mundane magical. The Worlds We Think We Know is a dazzling debut—clear-eyed, hilarious, and heartbreaking.

Dalia Rosenfeld is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Her work has appeared in pub- lications including The Atlantic, AGNI, Michigan Quarterly ,and Colorado Review. She teaches creative writing at Bar Ilan University and lives with her three children in Tel Aviv.

Corinne Sullivan INDECENT

Shy, introverted Imogene Abney has always been fascinated by the elite world of prep schools, having secretly longed to attend one since she was a girl. So, shortly after her college gradua- tion, when she’s offered a teaching position at the Vandenberg School for Boys, anall-boys prep school, she immediately accepts, despite having little teaching experience—and very little experience with boys.

When Imogene meets handsome, popular Adam Kipling a few weeks into her tenure there, a student who exudes charm and status and ease, she's immediately drawn to him. Who is this boy who flirts with her without fear of being caught? Who is this boy who seems immune to consequences and worry; a boy for whom the world will always provide?

As an obsessive, illicit affair begins between them, Imogene is so lost in the haze of infatuation that she's unable to recognize the danger she's in. The danger of losing her job. The danger of losing herself in the wrong person. The danger of being caught doing something possibly ille- gal and so indecent.

Exploring issues of class, sex, and gender, this smart, sexy debut by Corrine Sullivan shatters the black-and-white nature of victimhood, taking a close look at blame and moral ambiguity.

Corinne Sullivan studied English with a Creative Writing Concentration at College, where she graduated in 2014. She then received her MFA in fiction from Sarah Lawrence Col- lege in 2016. Her stories have appeared in Night Train, Knee-Jerk, and Pithead Chapel, among other publications. Indecent is her first novel.

Hannah Tunnicliffe A FRENCH WEDDING

"[A] sumptuous novel that will literally TAKE YOU AWAY. It has the scenery, the food, the friends, the scandals. It's a delightful escape to the French seaside that I, for one, never wanted to leave." — Elin Hilderbrand, author of The Rumor and Here’s to Us

Take six college friends reuniting on the Brittany coast. Add a heartbroken chef, sumptuous food and plenty of wine, and the table is set for tricky romantic entanglements, fiery outbursts and a range of secrets, all culminating in a wedding none of them ever expected.

Max is a washed-up rock star about to turn forty and feeling nostalgic when he invites old friends to his house in the French countryside for a weekend of good food and reminiscing. Finally ready to settle down, this is his chance to declare his secret, undying love to his best friend, Helen. Max's private chef, Juliette, has just returned to her hometown after a nasty breakup and her parents' failing health compel her to sell her dream restaurant in Paris. She hopes the peace and quiet of the kitchen will cure for her broken heart.

But when Max's friends arrive, Juliette finds herself drawn out of her orderly kitchen and into their tumultuous relationships. A weekend soaking up the sun, indulging in rich food and thinking about the past spurs more than one emotional crisis—and a lot of drama.

Brilliantly written and imminently relatable, A French Wedding captures the intense, singular bonds forged in youth, how that easy intimacy evolves over time as nostalgic impulses push up against regret, thwarted ambition and the loss of idealism.

David Vann BRIGHT AIR BLACK

“Incorporating both mesmerizing sentences and concentrated fragments . . . Sensual and violent, often simultaneously, Vann’s novel evokes the primal force of women’s power.”—Booklist

Following the success of Aquarium which was a New York Times Editor’s Choice and garnered numerous rave reviews, David Vann transports us to 13th century B.C. to give a nuanced and electric portrait of the life of one of ancient mythology’s most fascinating and notorious wom- en, Medea.

In brilliant poetic prose, Bright Air Black brings us aboard the ship Argo for its epic return jour- ney across the Black Sea from Persia’s Colchis—where Medea flees her home and father with Jason, the Argonauts, and the Golden Fleece. Vann’s reimagining of this ancient tale offers a thrilling, realist alternative to the long held notions of Medea as monster or sorceress. We wit- ness with dramatic urgency Medea’s humanity, her Bronze Age roots and position in Greek society, her love affair with Jason, and her tragic demise.

Atmospheric and spellbinding, Bright Air Black is an indispensable, fresh and provocative take on one of our earliest texts and the most intimate and corporal version of Medea’s story ever told.

David Vann’s internationally-bestselling books have won fifteen prizes, including best foreign novel in France and Spain, and have appeared on 70 Best Books of the Year lists in a dozen countries. His novels include Aquarium, Goat Mountain, Dirt, and Legend of a Suicide, among others. He holds degrees from Stanford and Cornell and is currently a Professor at the Univer- sity of Warwick in England. Aquarium has been optioned for film by Rhodri Thomas at Ink Factory.

Margaret Wilkerson Sexton A KIND OF FREEDOM

“With seemingly effortless subtlety and command, Wilkerson Sexton delivers. A Kind of Freedom is multifaceted and beautiful." —Victoria Patterson, author of The Little Brother

A multi-generational tale of a New Orleans family that sweeps deftly through the decades. Evelyn is a Creole woman who comes of age in New Orleans at the height of World War Two. When she falls for a no-name Negro, she is forced to choose between her life of privilege and the man she loves.

In 1986, Evelyn’s daughter, Jackie, is a frazzled single mother grappling with her absent hus- band’s drug addiction. Just as she comes to terms with his abandoning the family, he returns, ready to resume their old life.

Fresh out of prison for possession with the intent to distribute, Jackie’s son, T.C., decides to start over—until an old friend convinces him to stake his new beginning on one last deal.

Wilkerson Sexton has written an urgent novel spanning three generations: a grandmother’s lush and teeming early life; her adult daughter’s fight for her broken family; and her grand- son’s fraught and all-too-familiar entanglement with the law. For the grandmother, Jim Crow is an ongoing reality, and in its wake new threats spring up to haunt her descendants. A Kind of Freedom explores this legacy of racial disparity in the South in a moving and redemptive family history.

Margaret Wilkerson Sexton studied creative writing at Dartmouth and law at UC Berkeley. A recipient of the Lombard fellowship, she spent a year in the Dominican Republic working for a civil rights organization and writing her first manuscript, A Kind of Freedom, which received an honorable mention in the Leapfrog Press Fiction Contest. Adam Alter IRRESISTIBLE The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked

— An Best Book of the Month for March —

“As if to prove his point, Adam Alter has written a truly addictive book about the rise of addiction. Irre- sistible is a fascinating and much needed exploration of one of the most troubling phenomena of modern times.” —Malcolm Gladwell, author of David and Goliath and Outliers

Welcome to the age of behavioral addiction—an age in which we obsess over our emails, Insta- gram likes, and Facebook feeds; we binge on TV episodes and YouTube videos; we work long- er hours each year; and we spend an average of three hours each day using our smartphones. Half of us would rather suffer a broken bone than a broken phone, and Millennial kids spend so much time in front of screens that they struggle to interact with real, live humans.

In Irresistible Adam Alter tracks the rise of behavioral addiction and explains why so many of today's products are irresistible. Though these miraculous products melt the miles that sepa- rate people across the globe, their extraordinary and sometimes damaging magnetism is no accident—they are tweaked over time until they become almost impossible to resist.

By reverse engineering behavioral addiction, Alter explains how we can harness addictive products for the good—to improve how we communicate with each other, spend and save our money, and set boundaries between work and play—and how we can mitigate their most damaging effects on our well-being, and the health and happiness of our children.

Adam Alter is an Associate Professor of Marketing at New York University's Stern School of Business, with an affiliated appointment in the New York University Psychology Department. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Drunk Tank Pink: And Other Unexpected Forces That Shape How We Think, Feel, and Behave. He has consulted for dozens of companies and written for The New York Times, The New Yorker, Atlantic, WIRED, and Slate, among others.

Emily Balcetis PERCEPTION IS POWER How Successful People See the World

Humans are astounded by the difference between our visual perception and reality.

Perception is Power takes a common assumption – that we see others, ourselves, our world, and everything in it the ways they really are – and turns it on its head. In order to go about our dai- ly lives, we convince ourselves that what we see reflects the truth, but this is rarely the case. Our eyes grasp an incomplete picture, and our mind fills in the gaps with information, often colored by our own biases and life experiences.

In this book, Emily Balcetis will investigate the intersection of social psychology and visual perception to prove that we can leverage this divide between reality and perception for good. She will present strategies for success aimed at a wide variety of aspects of our lives that we hope to improve. The insights in Perception is Power will help overweight individuals exercise better; young people save for retirement; married couples be happier, and much more. It will offer specific tips for maintaining visual illusions when they are helpful and mitigating them when they’re not. By reading this book, we can better understand how the mind’s eye works, what we can do to take control of it, and how to truly see our world from a more advanta- geous perspective.

Emily Balcetis is an Associate Professor of Psychology at New York University. She has au- thored over 50 scientific publications, written for The Huffington Post, and appeared as a host for National Geographic and a guest on MSNBC. Her research has been covered by Forbes, Newsweek, Time, Cosmopolitan, Scientific American, and The Atlantic, and her TED Talk has over 2.8 million views. Emily received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Nebraska where she was a Regents Scholar and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Cornell University, where she held a Sage Fellowship.

Bianca Bosker CORK DORK A Wine-Fueled Adventure Among the Obsessive Sommeliers, Big Bottle Hunters, and Rogue Scientists Who Taught Me to Live for Taste

“Cork Dork is a brilliant feat of screwball participatory journalism and Bianca Bosker is a gonzo nerd prodigy. In a little more than a year she mastered an arcane field of knowledge and she’s written a hilari- ous, thoughtful and erudite book that may be the ultimate answer to the perennial question of whether or not wine connoisseurship is a scam.” — Jay McInerney, author of The Juice

Amateur drinker and professional tech reporter Bianca Bosker didn't know much about wine—until she stumbled on an alternate universe where taste reigned supreme, a world of master sommeliers who could, after a single sip, identify the grape a bottle was made from, in what year, and where it was produced, within acres. Where she tasted “wine,” they detected not only complex flavor profiles, but entire histories and geographies. Astounded by their fanatical dedication and seemingly superhuman sensory powers, Bosker abandoned her screen-centric life and set out to discover what drove their obsession, and whether she, too, could become a “cork dork.”

Thus begins a year and a half long adventure that takes the reader inside elite tasting groups, exclusive New York City restaurants, a California mass market wine "factory," and even a neu- roscientist’s fMRI machine as Bosker attempts to answer the most nagging question of all: what’s the big deal about wine? Counterintuitive, compulsively readable, and hilarious, Cork Dork illuminates how tasting better can help us live better—and will change the way you drink wine forever.

Bianca Bosker is the former executive tech editor of The Huffington Post. Her work has ap- peared in the Atlantic, T (the New York Times style magazine), Food & Wine, The Wall Street Jour- nal, , and The New Republic, as well as The New Yorker online. She is the recipient of numerous fellowships and journalism awards. She lives in New York City.

Victor Corona

NIGHT CLASS

When a drably dressed ex-military researcher set out to understand New York City’s nightlife, NYU sociologist Victor Corona had no idea just how dramatic a transformation he would un- dergo. In order to discover what lay behind the city’s velvet ropes, Victor needed to trade ill- fitting khakis and military IDs for glitter eye shadow and bright highlights in his hair. As his reinvention let him access a gritty world of artists and performers hungry for fame and glam- our, Night Class: A Downtown Memoir took shape.

Just as Wednesday Martin gave anthropological voice to the elite Upper East Side in her best- selling Primates of Park Avenue, Victor immerses himself among downtown’s most dazzling tribes. The memoir links his childhood as a closeted, undocumented Mexican boy trapped in suburbia to later encounters with wild New York personas.

This is a tale of transformation: of Victor, the New York legends he met, and the downtown world itself. Although many point to creative industries as key parts of any big city, no scholar has had the sustained access to downtown figures that Victor offers. In addition to extended conversations with over eighty key players in these scenes and never before seen photographs, Victor’s intense six-year immersion illuminates the thrill and tragedy brewed in the downtown night.

Victor P. Corona, Ph.D., is a sociologist at New York University. Victor has been featured in The New York Times, New York Post, Glamour, Town and Country, BlackBook, The Daily Beast, and Washington Post, among other publications. He was profiled in The Times of London and appears in the documentary film Glory Daze: The Life and Times of Michael Alig, winner of the 2015 Manhattan Film Festival. His Journal of Popular Culture article on Lady Gaga is the first peer-reviewed academic article published on the pop star. He has also written for VICE, New York Art Beat, and PopMatters. Born in Mexico City, Victor grew up outside of New York and now lives in Harlem.

Frederick Crews FREUD The Making of an Illusion

From the master of Freud scholars, the book that definitively puts an end to the myth of psy- choanalysis and its creator.

Since the 1970s, Sigmund Freud’s scientific reputation has been in an accelerating tailspin―but nonetheless the idea persists that some of his contributions were visionary discoveries of last- ing value. Now, drawing on rarely consulted archives, Frederick Crews has assembled a great volume of evidence that reveals a surprising new Freud: A man who blundered tragicomically in his dealings with patients, who in fact never cured anyone, who promoted cocaine as a mir- acle drug capable of curing a wide range of diseases, and who advanced his career through falsifying case histories and betraying the mentors who had helped him to rise. The legend has persisted, Crews shows, thanks to Freud’s fictive self-invention as a master detective of the psyche, and later through a campaign of censorship and falsification conducted by his follow- ers.

A monumental biographical study and a slashing critique, Freud: The Making of an Illusion will stand as the last word on one of the most significant and contested figures of the twentieth cen- tury.

Frederick Crews is the author of many books, including the bestselling satire The Pooh Per- plex, Postmodern Pooh, and most recently, Follies of the Wise, which was a finalist for a National Book Critics Circle award. A professor emeritus of English at the University of California, Berkeley and a longtime contributor to The New York Review of Books, he is widely regarded as the leading critic of Freud and psychoanalysis.

Antonio Damasio THE STRANGE ORDER OF THINGS The Biological Roots of the Cultural Mind

From one of our preeminent neuroscientists: a landmark reflection on the origins of life, feel- ings, mind, and culture that spans chemistry, biology, psychology, anthropology, and sociolo- gy, offering a new way of understanding who we are and how we behave.

We descend biologically, psychologically, and even socially from a long lineage that begins with single living cells. Our minds and cultures are linked by an invisible thread to the ways and means of ancient unicellular life and other life-forms. Inherent to the very chemistry of life is a powerful force, a striving toward life maintenance that governs life in all its guises, includ- ing the development of genes that help regulate and transmit life. The Strange Order of Things is a path-breaking investigation into homeostasis, the condition of regulating life within the range that makes possible not only the survival but the flourishing of life.

Antonio Damasio is University Professor, David Dornsife Professor of Neuroscience, Psychol- ogy and Philosophy, and Director of the Brain and Creativity Institute at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Trained as both neurologist and neuroscientist, Damasio has made seminal contributions to the understanding of brain processes underlying emotions, feel- ings, and consciousness. Damasio has discussed his research and ideas in several books, among them Descartes’ Error, The Feeling of What Happens, Looking for Spinoza, and Self Comes to Mind, which are translated worldwide and taught in many universities.

Robin Dreeke & Cameron Stauth THE CODE OF TRUST Foreword by Joe Navarro

Robin Dreeke is a 28-year veteran of federal service, including the United States Naval Acade- my and the United States Marine Corps. He served most recently as a senior agent in the FBI, with 20 years of experience. He was, until recently, the head of the Counterintelligence Behav- ioral Analysis Program, where his primary mission was to thwart the efforts of foreign spies, and to recruit American spies. His core approach in this mission was to inspire reasonable, well-founded trust among people who could provide valuable information.

The Code of Trust is based on the system Dreeke devised, tested, and implemented during years of field work at the highest levels of national security. Applying his system first to himself, he rose up through federal law enforcement, and then taught his system to law enforcement and military officials throughout the country, and later to private sector clients. The Code of Trust has since elevated executives to leadership, and changed the culture of entire companies, making them happier and more productive, as morale soared.

Inspiring trust is not a trick, nor is it an arcane art. It’s an important, character-building en- deavor that requires only a sincere desire to be helpful and sensitive, and the ambition to be more successful at work and at home. The Code of Trust is based on 5 simple principles: 1) sus- pend your ego, 2) be nonjudgmental, 3) honor reason, 4) validate others, and 5) be generous.

To be successful with this system, a reader needs only the willingness to spend eight to ten hours learning a method of trust-building that took Robin Dreeke almost a lifetime to create.

Robin Dreeke entered federal law enforcement in 1997, after graduating from the US Naval Academy and serving in the US Marine Corps. He received advanced training and operational experience in social psychology and in the practical application of the science of relationship development. Eventually he rose to direct the behavioral analysis program in a federal law enforcement agency. Dreeke is currently an agent of the FBI and lives in Fredericksburg, Vir- ginia.

DROP THE BALL Achieving More by Doing Less Foreword by Gloria Steinem

“Drop the Ball shows how everyone benefits when men work towards equality —and how our relation- ships and our lives are richer when we lean in together.” — Sheryl Sandberg, COO Facebook

A bold and inspiring memoir and manifesto from a renowned voice in the women's leadership movement who shows women how to cultivate the single skill they really need in order to thrive: the ability to let go.

Once the poster girl for doing it all, after she had her first child, Tiffany Dufu struggled to ac- complish everything she thought she needed to in order to succeed. Like so many driven and talented women who have been brought up to believe that to have it all, they must do it all, Dufu began to feel that achieving her career and personal goals was an impossibility. Eventu- ally, she discovered the solution: letting go. Here, she recounts how she learned to reevaluate expectations, shrink her to-do list, and engage the assistance of others―freeing the space she needed to flourish at work and to develop deeper, more meaningful relationships at home.

Offering a new perspective and packed with actionable advice, Drop the Ball urges women to embrace imperfection, to expect less of themselves and more from others―only then can they focus on what they truly care about, devote the necessary energy to achieving their real goals, and create the type of rich, rewarding life we all desire.

Tiffany Dufu, named to Fast Company’s League of Extraordinary Women, was a launch team member to Lean In and is Chief Leadership Officer to Levo, the fastest growing millennial pro- fessional network. She’s been featured in The New York Times, Essence, O: The Oprah Magazine, and on NPR. She is a consultant to Fortune 500 companies, a sought-after speaker on women’s leadership, and has presented at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit, MAKERS, and TEDWomen. SOLVE FOR HAPPY

"A powerful personal story woven with a rich analysis of what we all seek in a way we can act upon." — Sergey Brin, Co-Founder,

Mo Gawdat is a remarkable thinker and the Chief Business Officer at Google’s [X], an elite team of engineers that comprise Google’s futuristic “dream factory.” Applying his superior skills of logic and problem solving to the issue of happiness, he proposes an algorithm based on an understanding of how the brain takes in and processes joy. Then he solves for happy.

In 2001 Mo Gawdat realized that despite his incredible success, he was desperately unhappy. A lifelong learner, he attacked the problem as an engineer would: examining all the provable facts and scrupulously applying logic. Eventually, his countless hours of research and science proved successful, and he discovered the equation for permanent happiness.

Thirteen years later, Mo’s algorithm would be put to the ultimate test. After the sudden death of his son, Ali, Mo and his family turned to his equation—and it saved them from despair. In dealing with the horrible loss, Mo found his mission: he would pull off the type of “moonshot” goal that he and his colleagues were always aiming for—he would share his equation with the world and help as many people as possible become happier.

In Solve for Happy Mo questions some of the most fundamental aspects of our existence, shares the underlying reasons for suffering, and plots out a step-by-step process for achieving lifelong happiness and enduring contentment. He shows us how to view life through a clear lens, teaching us how to dispel the illusions that cloud our thinking; overcome the brain’s blind spots; and embrace five ultimate truths.

Mo Gawdat is the Vice President of Business Innovation at Google’s [X]. In the last ten years he has made happiness his primary topic of research, diving deeply into literature and con- versing on the topic with thousands of people in more than a hundred countries. He is also a serial entrepreneur who has co-founded more than twenty businesses.

Jameel Jaffer THE DRONE MEMOS Targeted Killing, Secrecy, and the Law

"[A] devastating indictment of the irresponsible and short-sighted arguments that the Obama admin- istration made in secret memos and then in open court." —Glenn Greenwald, American journalist and author of No Place to Hide

The Drone Memos collects for the first time the legal and policy documents underlying the U.S. government’s deeply controversial practice of “targeted killing”—the extrajudicial killing of suspected terrorists and militants, typically using remotely piloted aircraft or “drones.” The documents—including the Presidential Policy Guidance that provides the framework for drone strikes today, Justice Department white papers addressing the assassination of an Amer- ican citizen, and a highly classified legal memo that was published only after a landmark legal battle involving the ACLU, The New York Times, and the CIA—together constitute a remarkable effort to legitimize a practice that most human rights experts consider to be unlawful and that the United States has historically condemned.

In a lucid and provocative introduction, Jameel Jaffer, who led the ACLU legal team that se- cured the release of many of the documents, evaluates the “drone memos” in light of domestic and international law. He connects the documents’ legal abstractions to the real-world violence they allow, and makes the case that we are trading core principles of democracy and human rights for the illusion of security.

Jameel Jaffer is a deputy legal director of the ACLU. He led the ACLU legal team that sued for the release of the drone memos. He has written about the drone program for The New York Times, The Guardian, and the Harvard Law Review Forum among others and was listed by Foreign Policy magazine as a “Top 100 Global Thinker.” He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show, All In with Chris Hayes, and Democracy Now!, and speaks regularly at venues including the American Bar Association’s annual convening, law schools, and ACLU affiliates across the country. Lee Daniel Kravetz STRANGE CONTAGION Inside the Surprising Science of Infectious Behaviors and Viral Emotions and What They Tell Us About Ourselves

"[A] wise and searching book, bristling with restless intelligence. This is a lively, sweeping story. Though Strange Contagion starts with tragedy, it refuses to linger there, instead opening up into ques- tions of community, resilience, and just what it is we owe to one another.” — Daniel Smith, author of Monkey Mind: A Memoir of Anxiety

Picking up where The Tipping Point leaves off, respected journalist Lee Daniel Kravetz’s Strange Contagion is a provocative look at both the science and lived experience of social contagion.

In 2009, tragedy struck the town of Palo Alto: A student from the local high school committed suicide by stepping in front of an oncoming train. Grief-stricken, the community mourned what they thought was an isolated loss. Until, a few weeks later, it happened again. And again. And again. In six months, the high school lost five students to suicide. A recent transplant to the community and a new father himself, Kravetz’s experience as a science journalist kicked in: what was causing this tragedy? More importantly, how was it possible that a suicide cluster could develop in a community of concerned, aware, hyper-vigilant adults?

The answer? Social contagion. We know that ideas, emotions, and actions are communicable— from mirroring someone’s posture to mimicking speech patterns, we are driven by uncon- scious motivations triggered by our environment. But when just the right physiological, psy- chological, and social factors come together, we get what Kravetz calls a “strange contagion:” a perfect storm of common social viruses that, combined, form a highly volatile condition.

Strange Contagion is simultaneously a moving account of a community’s tragedy and a rigor- ous investigation of social phenomenon, drawing on research and insights from experts world- wide to unlock the mystery of how ideas spread, why they take hold, and offer thoughts on our responsibility to one another as citizens of a globally and perpetually connected world.

David Kwong SPELLBOUND Seven Principles of Illusion to Gain Influence, Captivate Audi- ences, and Unlock the Secrets of Success

“David Kwong has conjured a unique and seamless blend of cognitive psychology, business acumen, and the secrets of being a reknown magician.” —Martin Seligman, author of Learned Optimism and Flourish

A professional magician and illusionist—the head magic consultant for the hit film Now You See Me—reveals how to bridge the gap between perception and reality to increase your powers of persuasion and influence.

Successful leaders—like Steve Jobs, Warren Buffett, and Ted Turner—are masters of control and command who understand how to sway opinions and achieve goals.

In his years of research and practice, David has discovered seven fundamental principles of illusion. With these rules anyone can learn to captivate audiences and unlock the secrets of success. With Spellbound you’ll discover a different way to sell your idea, product, or skills, and make your best shot better than everyone else’s.

David Kwong is a magician and New York Times crossword puzzle constructor. Katherine Lewis THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT BAD BEHAVIOR The Latest Science for Parenting an Out of Control Generation

They’re adorable, loving, and a constant source of joy — until they’re not. Our kids’ behavior is predictably unpredictable, and parents engage in a universal struggle to control their tem- peramental moods. We try rewards and fair punishments; chore wheels and sticker charts. Yet even our most reasonable and rational actions do little to prevent or diagnose that tantrum that comes from nowhere, nor do they get kids to stop throwing the ball inside the house, clean up their rooms, stop texting, do their homework or go to bed. The insurrections are major and minor, but they are constant. Why?

Katherine Lewis has found a better way to understand children and see even the most chal- lenging encounters as opportunities for their positive personal development. In The Good News About Bad Behavior she advocates for empowerment parenting that centers on listening and a deeper understanding of the root causes of behavior, rather than reactionary rewards and pun- ishments. By strengthening their connection, communication, and capability, we can raise chil- dren who are happier, more successful, and better equipped to handle the challenges they’ll face in life – young people whose parents won’t constantly wonder what they’re doing wrong.

Katherine Lewis wrote an article for Mother Jones, “What if Everything You Knew About Dis- ciplining Kids Was Wrong?”, that has received over 4 million views and became the maga- zine’s most-read story ever. She is a Fortune contributor and award-winning independent jour- nalist who regularly writes for USA Today’s magazine group and . She has written for Atlantic.com, Bloomberg Businessweek, Money, The New York Times, and Slate, and has appeared on CNN, NPR, Bloomberg television and radio, and HuffPost Live, as well as nu- merous radio programs nationally and internationally. Julie Lythcott-Haims REAL AMERICAN

A fearless debut memoir in which beloved and bestselling How to Raise an Adult author Julie Lythcott-Haims pulls no punches in her recollections of growing up a biracial black woman in America.

Bringing a poetic sensibility to her prose to stunning effect, Lythcott-Haims briskly and stir- ringly evokes her personal battle with the low self-esteem that racism routinely inflicts on peo- ple of color. The only child of a marriage between an African-American father and a white British mother, she shows indelibly how so-called "micro" aggressions in addition to blunt force insults can puncture a person's inner life with a thousand sharp cuts. Real Ameri- can expresses also, through Lythcott-Haims’s path to self-acceptance, the healing power of community in overcoming the hurtful isolation of being incessantly considered "the other."

The author of the New York Times bestselling anti-helicopter parenting manifesto How to Raise an Adult, Lythcott-Haims has written a different sort of book this time out, but one that will nevertheless resonate with the legions of students, educators and parents to whom she is now well known, by whom she is beloved, and to whom she has always provided wise and neces- sary counsel about how to embrace and nurture their best selves. Real American is an affecting memoir, an unforgettable cri de coeur, and a clarion call to all of us to live more wisely, gener- ously and fully.

Julie Lythcott-Haims, bestselling author of How to Raise an Adult, served as dean of freshmen and undergraduate advising at Stanford University, where she received the Dinkelspiel Award for her contributions to the undergraduate experience. She holds a BA from Stanford, a JD from Harvard Law School, and an MFA in writing from California College of the Arts. She is a member of the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto, and resides in the Bay Area with her hus- band, their two teenagers, and her mother. How to Raise an Adult has sold in eleven countries.

John Mauceri MAESTROS AND THEIR MUSIC The Art and Alchemy of Conducting

From a celebrated conductor whose international career has spanned half a century—an exu- berant, uniquely accessible, sumptuously illustrated look inside the enigmatic art and craft of conducting.

John Mauceri brings a lifetime of experience to bear in this unprecedented, hugely informative, consistently entertaining exploration of his profession. With candor and humor, he makes clear that conducting is itself a composition: of legacy and tradition, techniques handed down from master to apprentice—and more than a trace of ineffable magic. He reveals how conductors approach a piece of music (a calculated combination of personal interpretation, imagination, and insight into the composer’s intent); what it takes to communicate solely through gesture, with sometimes hundreds of performers at once; and the occasionally-glamorous, often- challenging life of the itinerant maestro.

Mauceri, who worked closely with Leonard Bernstein for 18 years, studied with Leopold Sto- kowski, and was on the faculty of Yale University for 15 years, is the perfect guide to the allure and theater, passion and drudgery, rivalries and relationships of the conducting life.

John Mauceri has conducted symphonies, operas, ballets, musicals, and film music around the world over the past five decades. He has appeared in the world’s most famous venues and served as music director of four opera companies and three orchestras, as well as hosted televi- sion and radio programs. He is also a leading performer of music banned by the Third Reich and the music of Hollywood's émigré composers. An accomplished recording artist, he has more than 70 albums to his name, and is the recipient of a Grammy, a Tony, a Billboard, two Diapasons d’Or, three Emmys, and four Deutsche Schallplatten awards. He has written for The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Times of London, and The Huffington Post, among other publications.

Keith Payne THE BROKEN LADDER How Inequality Affects the Way We Think, Live, and Die

“[A]n eye-opening book with profound resonance for the state of our world... A thoughtful look — and a rallying cry — into the way our environment shapes us all.” – Susan Cain, New York Times bestselling author of Quiet

A timely examination by a leading scientist of the physical, psychological, and moral effects of inequality.

Today’s inequality is on a scale that none of us has seen in our lifetimes, yet this disparity be- tween rich and poor has ramifications that extend far beyond mere financial means. Keith Payne examines how inequality divides us not just economically, but also has profound conse- quences for how we think, how our cardiovascular systems respond to stress, how our im- mune systems function, and how we view moral ideas such as justice and fairness.

Experiments in psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics have not only revealed important new insights on how inequality changes people in predictable ways, but have also provided a corrective to our flawed way of viewing poverty as the result of individual charac- ter failings. Among modern developed societies, economic inequality is not primarily about money, but rather about relative status: where we stand in relation to other people. Regardless of their average income, countries or states with greater levels of income inequality have much higher rates of all the social problems we associate with poverty: lower average life expectan- cies, serious health issues, mental illness, and crime. The Broken Ladder offers measures people can take to lessen the harm done by inequality in their own lives and the lives of their children.

Keith Payne is a professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As an international leader in the psychology of inequality and discrimination, he has pub- lished more than seventy articles and book chapters. His work has been covered in popular media from NPR to The Huffington Post to The Atlantic. In addition to his academic publica- tions, he has written for general audiences in Scientific American and Psychology Today. He re- ceived his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis.

Kate Pickert LUMP The Breast Cancer Story

As a health care journalist for TIME Magazine, Kate Pickert was well-acquainted with the emo- tional highs and lows of medical trauma and treatment, but always second hand. When she was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 35, the illness tested her physical and emotional strength and obliterated her impartial shield.

Suddenly faced with staggering uncertainty and health choices that she couldn’t treat objec- tively, she began to see that her course of treatment —chemotherapy, targeted drugs, a double mastectomy and five weeks of daily radiation — was built upon a deep, historical foundation of trial and error, risk and miraculous reward.

Drawing on interviews with doctors, researchers, and patients, along with personal journal entries collected over 14 months of treatment, Lump will, for the first time, combine a personal tale of breast cancer with an investigation into how treatment for the disease began and evolved over time.

This is the definitive story of breast cancer, full of advances and victories, but also wrong turns, misunderstandings and ineffective attempts to beat back a disease that claims the lives of some 40,000 women every year in the US alone. From disfiguring mastectomies in the 18th century to vaccines and personalized treatment today, readers will gain a rich and memorable understanding of how modern medicine became smart, targeted and far more effective than ever before. Through frank, honest writing and investigative reporting, Kate will write about how breast cancer emerged from the shadows to become a public disease that touches nearly every woman, and man, in one way or another.

Kate Pickert is a staff writer for TIME. She writes about health care and previously worked for New York Magazine. She is a graduate of the University at Buffalo and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Lump is her first book.

Mitch Prinstein POPULAR The Power of Likability in a Status-Obsessed World

“In Mitch Prinstein’s fascinating book, you’ll learn all about the benefits and pitfalls of being popular and how to make popularity work for you in business and in life.” —Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell Is Human and Drive

A leading psychologist examines how our popularity affects our success, our relationships, and our happiness—and why we don’t always want to be the most popular.

No matter how old you are, there’s a good chance that the word “popular” immediately trans- ports you back to your teenage years. Most of us can easily recall the adolescent social cliques and the high school pecking order. Even as adults we all still remember exactly where we stood, and the powerful emotions associated with our status persist decades later.

Popular examines why popularity plays such a key role in our development and, ultimately, how it still influences our happiness and success today. In many ways—some even beyond our conscious awareness—those old dynamics of our youth continue to play out in every busi- ness meeting, every social gathering, in our personal relationships, and even how we raise our children. Our popularity even affects our DNA, our health, and our mortality in fascinating ways we never previously realized. More than childhood intelligence, family background, or prior psychological issues, research indicates that it’s how popular we were in our early years that predicts how successful and how happy we grow up to be.

But it’s not always the conventionally popular people who fare the best, for the simple reason that there is more than one type of popularity—and many of us still long for the wrong one. Research indicates that some types of popularity hurt us more than we realize.

Mitch Prinstein is the John Van Seters Distinguished Professor of Psychology and the Director of Clinical Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He’s also the Past- President of the Society for the Science of Clinical Psychology and the President-Elect of the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. Cathryn Jakobson Ramin CROOKED Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery

The acclaimed author of Carved in Sand—a veteran investigative journalist who endured per- sistent back pain for decades—delivers the definitive book on the subject: an essential exami- nation of all facets of the back pain industry, exploring what works, what doesn't, what may cause harm, and how to get on the road to recovery.

In her effort to manage her own chronic back pain, investigative reporter Cathryn Jakobson Ramin spent years and a small fortune on a panoply of treatments. But her discomfort only intensified, leaving her feeling frustrated and perplexed. As she searched for better solutions, she exposed a much bigger problem. As she traveled the globe, asking questions, she realized that in every nation where life and work have become primarily sedentary, back pain treat- ment was costly, ineffective, and often harmful. Corruption and collusion were rife, and pa- tients and taxpayers shouldered the burden.

The result of six years of intensive investigation, Crooked offers a startling look at the poorly identified risks of spine medicine, and provides practical advice on how, as a patient, to beat the odds. Ramin interviewed scores of spine surgeons, pain management doctors, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, exercise physiologists, physical therapists, chiroprac- tors, and specialized bodywork practitioners throughout the world. She met with many pa- tients whose pain and desperation led them to make life-altering decisions, and with others who triumphed over their limitations.

The result is a brilliant and comprehensive book that is essential to millions of back pain sufferers around the world, and to all types of health care professionals. Ramin shatters as- sumptions about surgery, chiropractic methods, physical therapy, spinal injections and pain- killers, and addresses evidence-based rehabilitation options—showing, in detail, how to avoid therapeutic dead ends, while saving money, time, and considerable anguish. With Crooked, she reveals what it takes to outwit the back pain industry and get on the road to recovery.

Cathryn Jakobson Ramin is an investigative journalist and essayist. Her work has appeared in many national publications. Her first book, Carved in Sand, was a New York Times bestseller and attracted global media attention. 54

Reshma Saujani BRAVE, NOT PERFECT

Praise for Reshma Saujani:

“A woman unfazed by risks… Reshma Saujani wants women and girls all over to ditch the idea of be- coming perfect” — The Guardian

The messages are implicit and explicit – from childhood to adulthood, girls and women are pushed to seek perfection. In their grades, activities, career choices, appearance and demeanor, women strive to have it all, and to do it all perfectly, while smiling, preferably in heels.

Reshma Saujani, the daughter of immigrant parents, was no different. She worked her way up only to realize that the path to perfect was making her miserable. So, she did something brave and risky. She quit her job and became the first Indian-American woman to run for Congress. Fortunately, she failed. It was that failure that set Reshma on a journey filled with setbacks, but ultimately, immense rewards. In 2012, she founded the non-profit Girls Who Code, with the goal of teaching 1 million girls to code by 2020 and closing the gender gap in technology.

While working closely with young girls and women, she came to understand that there is a fundamental difference between how our culture socializes girls and boys. Namely, boys are taught to be brave – to take risks, speak up, play rough and fall down trying – while girls learn that the road to achievement is paved with diligence and caution. Brave, Not Perfect will be a manifesto that enables women to see the roots of this problem and rewire themselves – and future generations of women – for bravery. Earlier this year, Reshma’s TED Talk “Teach girls bravery, not perfection” struck a chord around the world, with over 3 million views.

Reshma Saujani is the Founder and CEO of Girls Who Code. She has been named as one of Fortune’s World’s Greatest Leaders, Fortune’s 40 under 40, and a Wall Street Journal Magazine Innovator of the Year. She is the author of the forthcoming YA non-fiction book, Girls Who Code.

Jason Schreier BLOOD, SWEAT, AND PIXELS The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made

You’ve got a killer idea for a video game—it’s about a mustachioed plumber who has to rescue his princess girlfriend from a giant turtle—and you’ve convinced an investor to give you a few million dollars to make it happen. What do you do?

For gamers, it seems easy: you just make Super Mario Brothers. (Obviously). But the reality is not so simple. You have to hire artists, programmers, sound engineers and marketing staff, and somehow get them to work together. And whether you have a staff of twenty or a thou- sand, a lot can go wrong. You might find that the original concept isn’t fun, you might push up against technical limitations that hamper your design, or your main investor might slash your budget, and with it, your staff. Things can very quickly go to hell.

Blood, Sweat, and Pixels shows what game development is really like. The author’s long-reads on games development are some of the most popular on Kotaku, garnering hundreds of thou- sands of readers who are fascinated with the process by which their favorite games – which they might play for hundreds of hours – are made. Bumpy development cycles of high-profile games like Diablo III and Destiny, and indie titles like Jonathan Blow’s recently released hit The Witness unite in a common narrative: to make a successful game a developer must Invent, Raise, Obsess, Evolve, Revise, Hype, and Recover.

Jason Schreier is the news editor at Kotaku, a popular offshoot of Gawker. He has been pub- lished in Wired, The New York Times, Edge, Paste, Kill Screen, and The Onion News Network. He is a graduate of New York University.

Simple, smart, and inspirational, it provides con- crete tools you can use to live a more fulfilling, happier, and yes, more productive life.” – Arianna Huffington, author of The Sleep Revolution and Thrive

Whether you're a Fortune 500 CEO or someone bogged down with a never-ending to-do list, the proven secret to being more effective and living a happier, healthier life is to hurry up and slow down, to unplug.

Studies show that you can get more done — and do it better — by doing less, just by con- sciously unplugging for a few minutes each day and meditating. This revolutionary book by the founder and CEO of the groundbreaking LA-based meditation studio Unplug Medita- tion brilliantly simplifies this powerful practice and shows the overwhelmed and overworked how easy it is to unplug in order to relieve stress, regain focus, and recharge.

This modernized approach to meditation will appeal to anyone, even if — especially if — you believe you have no time, you can't sit still, or that "it's just not you." Schwartz debunks the common misperceptions about meditation, including the notions that you need to sit still for long periods of time or "turn off your brain." She also shares the life-changing benefits you will experience, the proven science of how meditation literally changes your brain, as well as easy techniques and tips to easily incorporate meditation into your daily life.

Elizabeth L. Silver THE TINCTURE OF TIME A Memoir of (Medical) Uncertainty

“In Elizabeth Silver’s masterful hands, suffering creates poetry… [her] meditation on trauma, memory, and time is one of the most riveting stories of illness that I’ve ever read. This is an unforgettable book.” —Susannah Cahalan, author of Brain on Fire

Set against the unexplained stroke of the author’s newborn daughter, this stunning, unflinch- ingly honest memoir is an thought-provoking reflection on uncertainty in medicine and in life.

Growing up as the daughter of a dedicated surgeon, Elizabeth L. Silver felt an unquestioned faith in medicine. When her six-week-old daughter, Abby, was rushed to the Neonatal Inten- sive Care Unit with sudden seizures, and scans revealed a serious brain bleed, her relationship to medicine began to change.

The Tincture of Time is Silver’s gorgeous and haunting chronicle of Abby’s first year. It’s a year of unending tests, doctors’ opinions, sleepless nights, promising signs and steps backward, and above all, uncertainty: The mysterious circumstances of Abby’s hospitalization attract doz- ens of specialists, none of whom can offer a conclusive answer about what went wrong or what the future holds. As Silver explores what it means to cope with uncertainty as a patient and parent and seeks peace in the reality that Abby’s injury may never be fully understood, she looks beyond her own story for comfort, probing literature and religion, examining the practice of medicine throughout history, and reporting the experiences of doctors, patients, and fellow caretakers. The result is a brilliant blend of personal narrative and cultural analysis, at once a poignant snapshot of a parent’s struggle and a wise meditation on the reality of un- certainty, in and out of medicine, and the hard-won truth that time is often its only cure.

Heart-wrenching, unflinchingly honest, and beautifully written, The Tincture of Time is a pow- erful story of parenthood, an astute examination of the boundaries of medicine, and an inspir- ing reminder of life’s precariousness.

Elizabeth L. Silver is the author of the novel The Execution of Noa P. Singleton, which has been published in seven languages. She has worked as an attorney in Texas and California and as an adjunct instructor of English literature and composition. 58 North America: Penguin Press (April 2017) Agent: Richard Pine Editor: Emily Cunningham Format: galley

Scott Sonenshein STRETCH Unlock the Power of Less—and Achieve More Than You Ever Imagined

“It's easy to feel like we never have enough time, resources, or money. Scott Sonenshein's surprising and entertaining book inspires and instructs us to make the most out of what we already have. The re- sult is more—more creativity, more engagement, and more satisfaction.” — Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell is Human and Drive

A groundbreaking approach to succeeding in business and life, using the science of resource- fulness.

We often think the key to success and satisfaction is to get more: more money, time, and pos- sessions; bigger budgets, job titles, and teams; and additional resources for our professional and personal goals. It turns out we’re wrong.

Using captivating stories to illustrate research in psychology and management, Rice University professor Scott Sonenshein examines why some people and organizations succeed with so little, while others fail with so much. People and organizations approach resources in two different ways: “chasing” and “stretching.” When chasing, we exhaust ourselves in the pursuit of more. When stretching, we embrace the resources we already have. This frees us to find cre- ative and productive ways to solve problems, innovate, and engage more fully.

Stretch shows why everyone—from executives to entrepreneurs, professionals to parents, ath- letes to artists—performs better with constraints; why seeking too many resources undermines our work and well-being; and why even those with a lot benefit from making the most out of a little. Drawing from examples in business, education, sports, medicine, and history, Scott Sonenshein advocates a powerful framework of resourcefulness that allows anybody to work and live better.

Scott Sonenshein is the Henry Gardiner Symonds Professor of Management at Rice Universi- ty. His award winning research, teaching, and consulting has helped Fortune 500 executives, entrepreneurs, and professionals in industries such as technology, healthcare, retail, education, banking, manufacturing, and non-profits. Lea Waters THE STRENGTH SWITCH How the New Science of Strength-Based Parenting Can Help Your Child and Your Teen to Flourish

"Practical tips for parents from the wise and wonderful Lea Waters! So many parents, including me, struggle to translate scientific research into real-world strategies. This terrific book not only helps us understand ourselves and our children better but also makes that understanding actionable!" —Angela Duckworth, PhD, author of the New York Times bestselling Grit

Unlock your children’s potential by helping them build their strengths.

This game-changing book shows us the extraordinary results of focusing on our children’s strengths rather than always trying to correct their weaknesses. Most parents struggle with this shift because they suffer from a negativity bias, thanks to evolutionary development, giv- ing them “strengths-blindness.” By showing us how to throw the “strengths switch,” Lea Wa- ters demonstrates how we can not only help our children build resilience, optimism, and achievement but we can also help inoculate them against today’s pandemic of depression and anxiety.

As a strengths-based scientist for more than twenty years, ten of them spent focusing on strengths-based parenting, Waters has seen how this approach enhances self-esteem and ener- gy in both children and teenagers. Yet more on the plus side: parents find it a particularly ex- citing and rewarding way to raise children. With many suggestions for specific ways to inter- act with your kids, Waters demonstrates how to discover strengths and talents in our children, how to use positive emotions as a resource, how to build strong brains, and even how to deal with problem behaviors and talk about difficult situations and emotions. As revolutionary yet simple as Mindset and Grit, The Strength Switch will show parents how a small shift can yield enormous results.

Lea Waters is Professor of Psychology at the University of Melbourne, Australia’s top ranked university, and an internationally recognized leader in her field. She holds affiliate positions at Cambridge University and the University of Michigan, as well as being a Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania where she works with Martin Seligman.

Andrew Weil MIND OVER MEDS Know When Drugs Are Necessary, When Alternatives Are Better – and When to Let Your Body Heal on Its Own

Too many people are taking too many drugs — and it's costing us our health, happiness, and lives.

Prescription drug use in America alone has increased tenfold in the past 50 years, and over-the -counter drug use has risen just as dramatically. In addition to the dozens of medications we take to treat serious illnesses, we take drugs to help us sleep, to keep us awake, to keep our noses from running, our backs from aching, and our minds from racing. Name a symptom, there's a pill to suppress it.

Modern drugs can be miraculously life-saving, and many illnesses demand their use. But what happens when our reliance on powerful pharmaceuticals blinds us to their risks? Painful side effects and dependency are common, and adverse drug reactions are a leading cause of death.

In Mind over Meds, bestselling author Dr. Andrew Weil alerts readers to the problem of over- medication, and outlines when medicine is necessary, and when it is not. Dr. Weil examines how we came to be so drastically overmedicated, presents science that proves drugs aren't al- ways the best option, and provides reliable integrative medicine approaches to treating com- mon ailments like high blood pressure, allergies, depression, and even the common cold. With case histories, healthy alternative treatments, and input from other leading physicians, Mind over Meds is the go-to resource for anyone who is sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Andrew Weil, MD, is the author of numerous bestselling books, including Spontaneous Happi- ness, Spontaneous Healing, Eight Weeks to Optimum Health, and Healthy Aging. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, he is professor of public health, clinical profes- sor of medicine, and the Lovell-Jones Professor of Integrative Rheumatology at the University of Arizona as well as director of the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. He authors the popular "Self-Healing" newsletter and columns for Prevention magazine and is a frequent guest on numerous national talk shows. He lives in Arizona.

Wendy Wood GOOD HABITS, BAD HABITS Simple and Lasting Changes for a Better Life

Wendy Wood, the world’s foremost authority on habits, proves that the key to changing our behavior lies within the 43% of our daily life that is entirely routine and outside our conscious thought processes. Here she will explain the mysterious inner workings of habit and show us how to make ourselves systematically happier, healthier and more successful.

When attempting to achieve results – whether it be exercising, eating less or saving money – we often articulate our goals to ourselves, share them with friends and family or write them down. But we fall off course while performing the basic steps necessary to accomplish them. Our motivation and self-control aren’t strong enough to counter our habitual actions.

Wood will take us inside our own heads and show us a new way forward. Using context cues, repetition and reward, we can align our habits with our intentions, values and loftiest goals so that we never again make the mistake of planning for change in a bubble. Through scientific analysis of habit and narrative storytelling that highlights the surprisingly mundane actions behind “superhuman” achievements, Good Habits, Bad Habits will put all of our aspirations within reach. It will do is allow every reader to experience a greater sense of self-mastery and more meaning on a daily basis.

Wendy Wood is Provost Professor of Psychology and Business at the University of Southern California. Her research incorporates neuroscience, cognition, and behavioral insights to un- derstand habit persistence and change, and she has collaborated with many luminary psy- chologists, including Angela Duckworth and Adam Grant. Cath Crowley WORDS IN DEEP BLUE

“One of the loveliest, most exquisitely beautiful books I’ve read in a very long time. (How beautiful? I highlighted and circled and underlined like mad.) I didn’t just read the pages, I lived in them.” – Jennifer Niven, author of All the Bright Places

A beautiful love story for fans of Jandy Nelson and Nicola Yoon: two teens find their way back to each other in a bookstore full of secrets and crushes, grief and hope—and letters hidden be- tween the pages.

Years ago, Rachel had a crush on Henry Jones. The day before she moved away, she tucked a love letter into his favorite book in his family’s bookshop. She waited. But Henry never came.

Now Rachel has returned to the city—and to the bookshop—to work alongside the boy she’d rather not see, if at all possible, for the rest of her life. But Rachel needs the distraction. Her brother drowned months ago, and she can’t feel anything anymore.

As Henry and Rachel work side by side—surrounded by books, watching love stories unfold, exchanging letters between the pages—they find hope in each other. Because life may be un- controllable, even unbearable sometimes. But it’s possible that words, and love, and second chances are enough.

SUMMER SKIN

“As smart as it is hot … the feminist love story that girls have been waiting for.” – Clementine Ford, author of Fight Like a Girl

Jess Gordon and Mitch Crawford are both studying at the University of Queensland, but that’s all they have in common. Jess and her friends are modern day riot grrls. Mitch and his mates are rugby boys, renowned for predatory behavior.

When their paths first cross they’re combative, but just for a moment Jess and Mitch recognize the outsider in each other. She feels old-fashioned in a world of casual hook ups, sexting and internet porn, wary of getting involved again in the wake of a bad break-up. Mitch is finding it hard to live up to expectations after the death of his best friend, but he’s struggling more with keeping his own culpability a secret.

So begins a slow, careful circling, a number of encounters they keep secret from their peers. Summer Skin takes an honest look at lust, trust, love, and double standards. It asks the ques- tion: In a world where sex is pushed all the time, has intimacy become the risk?

THE CERULEAN

Praise for The Jewel:

“With its taut, provocative plot and irresistible characters, The Jewel had me tearing through the pages right up to the final, startling twist.” —Andrea Cremer, author of The Inventor’s Secret

Sera is Cerulean. Her blood is magic. She lives in the sky, in a beautiful floating paradise populated only by women. Every five hundred years, the High Priestess chooses a young girl to be sacrificed—flung over the edge, bleeding—for the protection of the City. And today, the High Priestess chose Sera.

It is an honor, Sera’s orange mother told her after the ceremony. It is a necessity, her green mother said, as they left the High Priestess’s temple. Her purple mother said nothing.

On the day of the ceremony, Sera says goodbye to her mothers and her best friend, Leela. With blood pouring from her wrists, she plummets toward the surface, blazing like a falling star— yet she’s surprised to find that the fall doesn’t kill her. Instead, she’s found by Leo and Agnes, the son and daughter of an industrialist from the surface city of Kaolin who are on safari to find new creatures for their father’s freak show. The arrogant Leo is doing so to win the respect of his father; Agnes, out of scientific curiosity. Sera tries to communicate with them— and is shocked to finally see a male!—but her voice only comes out a whisper in the dense atmosphere of the surface. Leo roughly ties her up and they make their way back toward the city.

When they return with their prize, their father is delighted and Sera is horrified to see the way they treat the other magical beings they’ve captured. As the cruel training for the show begins, Agnes finds a way to communicate with Sera and realizes that she is sentient after all—and that she must help her escape her cruel fate...

Lexa Hillyer SPINDLE FIRE

"Spindle Fire takes the sleeping beauty elements you know and expands them, twists them in the best way possible. The writing is lovely, the sisters indomitable, and as the truths behind the faerie legends were revealed, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough." — Kendare Blake, author of Three Dark Crowns

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo, Spindle Fire is an enthralling, wholly origi- nal reimagining of a classic faerie story.

A kingdom burns. A princess sleeps. This is no fairytale.

Half sisters Isabelle and Aurora are polar opposites: Isabelle is the king’s headstrong illegiti- mate daughter, whose sight was tithed by faeries; Aurora, beautiful and sheltered, was tithed her sense of touch and voice on the same day. Despite their differences, the sisters have always been extremely close.

And then everything changes, with a single drop of Aurora’s blood, a Faerie Queen who is preparing for war, a strange and enchanting dream realm—and a sleep so deep it cannot be broken.

Spindle Fire is a tour-de-force fantasy featuring two truly unforgettable heroines, from a writer destined to be a major voice in YA.

Time is a prison. She is the key.

In the land of Sempera, the rich control everything—even time. Ever since the fabled age of alchemy and sorcery, hours, days, and years have been extracted from blood, bound to iron, and preserved in coins. Now aristocrats like the Gerling family flourish for centuries, while many commoners live in bitter resentment.

And no one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. She and her father were once servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate—until a fateful accident drove them away. But when her father reaches his last hour, Jules will do anything to save him. Desperate to earn time, she returns to Everless amidst preparations for the wedding between Roan, the youngest Gerling lord, and the queen’s daughter. Soon Jules finds herself swept up in the castle’s sprawling lawns, its labyrinthine halls . . . and its memories.

Between Roan’s unexpected kindness, his brother, Liam’s, cruelty, and the chilling rumors sur- rounding the queen, Everless holds more temptations—and danger—than Jules thought possi- ble. The stories of her childhood begin to take on new significance, spiraling her deeper into a past she hardly recognizes, and revealing a tangle of violent secrets that will change her future forever—and possibly the future of time itself.

An eccentric old wizard Hugo prefers to spends his days alone practicing ancient spells, enchanting his furniture to be alive, and feuding with his next-door neighbor over property lines…until the Wizard Council orders him to take on a new apprentice, Ivy—she’s sarcastic, withdrawn, and seems entirely disinterested in magic.

Nightshade is unpredictable, uncontrollable, and a real jerk to boot. When Ivy lets Nightshade take control, she’s fast, she’s strong, she’s confi- dent, and she can even fly and spit green fire. Not a bad trade-off, right? Ivy doesn’t think so. She wants Nightshade gone, and she wants Hugo to help her do it. With some help from their neighbor Zan, a fearsome disgraced paladin, and her apprentice Brambles, a happy-go-lucky young druid raised by Tree-Monks, what could go wrong?

Krystal Sutherland A SEMI-DEFINITIVE LIST OF WORST NIGHTMARES

Praise for Our Chemical Hearts:

“The author pulls no punches… emotionally engaging.”—Kirkus

From the author of Our Chemical Hearts comes the hilarious, reality-bending tale of two outsid- ers facing their greatest fears about life and love—one debilitating phobia at a time.

Ever since Esther Solar’s grandfather was cursed by Death, everyone in her family has been doomed to suffer one great fear in their lifetime. Esther’s father is agoraphobic and hasn’t left the basement in six years, her twin brother can’t be in the dark without a light on, and her mother is terrified of bad luck. The Solars are consumed by their fears and, according to the legend of the curse, destined to die from them.

Esther doesn’t know what her great fear is yet (nor does she want to), a feat achieved by avoid- ing pretty much everything. Elevators, small spaces and crowds are all off-limits. So are hair- cuts, spiders, dolls, mirrors and three dozen other phobias she keeps a record of in her semi- definitive list of worst nightmares.

Then Esther is pickpocketed by Jonah Smallwood, an old elementary school classmate. Along with her phone, money and a fruit roll-up she’d been saving, Jonah also steals her list of fears. Despite the theft, Esther and Jonah become friends, and he sets a challenge for them: in an effort to break the curse that has crippled her family, they will meet every Sunday of senior year to work their way through the list, facing one terrifying fear at a time, including one that Esther hadn’t counted on: love.

Krystal Sutherland is the author of Our Chemical Hearts. She was born and raised in Towns- ville, Australia, a place that has never experienced winter. Since then she's lived in Sydney, where she edited her university's student magazine; Amsterdam, where she worked as a for- eign correspondent; and Hong Kong. She has no pets and no children, but is fond of naming inanimate objects: in the she owned a Dutch bicycle called Kim Kardashian, and a small, inflatable velociraptor called Herbert

LOVE AND OTHER ALIEN EXPERIENCES

I'm never going outside again.

Mallory hasn't left the house in sixty-seven days--since the day her dad left. She attends her classes via webcam, rarely leaves her room (much to her brother's chagrin), and spends most of her time watching The X-Files or chatting with the always obnoxious BeamMeUp on New Mexico's premier alien message board.

But when she's shockingly nominated for homecoming queen, her life takes a surprising turn. She slowly begins to open up to the world outside. And maybe if she can get her popular jock neighbor Brad Kirkpatrick to be her homecoming date, her classmates will stop calling her a freak.

In this heartwarming and humorous debut, Mallory discovers first love and the true meaning of home—just by taking one small step outside her house.

Kerry Winfrey grew up in Bellville, Ohio, where she spent most of her time reading inappro- priate books at the library. Not much has changed. Kerry writes for HelloGiggles and blogs at Welcome to Ladyville. She lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her husband, their son, and their dog, Merlin.

Jeff Zentner GOODBYE DAYS

“One of the most stunningly heartfelt, lump-in-your-throat novels I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Hold onto your heart: this book will wreck you, fix you, and most definitely change you.” —Becky Albertalli, author of Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda

“Gorgeous, heartbreaking, and ultimately life-affirming,” says Nicola Yoon, author of Everything, Everything and The Sun Is Also A Star, of this novel about finding strength and hope after tragedy. Perfect for fans of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and Looking for Alaska, and for readers of author Jeff Zentner's own The Serpent King, one of the most highly acclaimed YA debuts of 2016.

Carver Briggs never thought a simple text would cause a fatal crash, killing his three best friends, Mars, Eli, and Blake. But now Carver can’t stop blaming himself for the accident and even worse, a powerful judge is pressuring the district attorney to open up a criminal investi- gation.

Luckily, Carver has some unexpected allies: Eli’s girlfriend, the only person to stand by him at school; Dr. Mendez, his new therapist; and Blake’s grandmother, who asks Carver to spend a “goodbye day” together to share their memories and say a proper farewell.

Soon the other families are asking for their own goodbye day with Carver—but he’s unsure of their motives. Will they all be able to make peace with their losses, or will these goodbye days bring Carver one step closer to a complete breakdown or—even worse—prison?

Jeff Zentner is the author of the William C. Morris Award-winning novel The Serpent King, which sold abroad in eight countries. In addition to writing, he is also a singer-songwriter and guitarist who has recorded with Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, and Debbie Harry.

THE MORNING THEY CAME

FOR US Dispatches from Syria

“Devastating… [a] searing and necessary book” — The New York Times

The Morning They Came For Us bears witness to one of the most brutal, internecine conflicts in recent history. Drawing from years of experience covering Syria for Vanity Fair, Newsweek, and the front pages of The New York Times, award-winning journalist Janine di Giovanni gives us a tour de force of war reportage, all told through the perspective of ordinary people—among them a doctor, a nun, a musician, and a student. What emerges is an extraordinary picture of the devastating human consequences of armed conflict.

TIME TRAVEL

“A fascinating mash-up of philosophy, literary criticism, physics and cultural observation. It’s witty . . . pithy . . . and regularly manages to twist its reader’s mind”—Anthony Doerr, The New York Times Book Review

From the acclaimed author of The Information and Chaos, here is a mind-bending exploration of time travel: its subversive origins, its evolution in literature and science, and its influence on our understanding of time itself. Gleick tracks the evolution of time travel as an idea that be- comes part of contemporary culture—from Marcel Proust to Doctor Who, from Jorge Luis Bor- ges to Woody Allen. He investigates the inevitable looping paradoxes and examines the po- rous boundary between pulp fiction and modern physics. Finally, he delves into a temporal shift that is unsettling our own moment: the instantaneous wired world, with its all- consuming present and vanishing future.

Time Travel was published by Pantheon in September 2016 and has sold to Fourth Estate/UK, DarkSide Books/Brazil, Posts and Telecommunications Press/China, Travlos/Greece, Codice/ Italy, Kashiwa Shobo/Japan, East-Asia Publishing/Korea, Zysk/Poland, SC Publica Com/ Romania, MIF/Russia, Critica/Spain, China Times/Taiwan.

THE HEART OF HENRY QUANTUM “In Harding's wry debut fiction... Henry's a perfectly sketched character, his interi- or monologue...at times funny, at times profound.—Kirkus

Henry Quantum has several thoughts going through his head at any given time, so it’s no surprise when he forgets something very important— a Christmas gift for his wife, Margaret. Much like his ever-wandering mind, Henry’s quest for the perfect present takes him in unexpected directions, including running into the former love of his life, Daisy. Margaret, meanwhile, has begun her own affair, seeking an escape from her unhappy marriage. And Daisy, who has made the unsettling choice of leaving her husband to strike out on her own, finds herself questioning whether she and Henry belong together after all. A sweet, funny, and touching debut which shows how the seemingly insignificant events of one single day can change our lives forever—perhaps, if we’re lucky, for the better.

The Heart of Henry Quantum was published by Gallery Books in October 2016 and has sold to Scribe/UK, Euromedia/Czech Republic, Michel Lafon/France, Goldmann/Germany, Rizzoli/ 86 Italy, AST/Russia.

I HATE THE INTERNET

“A grainy political and cultural rant, a sustained shriek about power and morality in a new global era...This book has soul as well as nerve.” —The New York Times

What if you told the truth and the whole world heard you? What if you lived in a country swamped with Internet outrage? What if you were a woman in a society that hated women? Set in the San Francisco of 2013, I Hate the Internet offers a hilarious and obscene portrayal of life amongst the victims of the digital boom. As billions of tweets fuel the city’s gentrification and the human wreckage piles up, a group of friends suffers the consequences of being useless in a new world that despises the pointless and unprofitable. THE MANDIBLES

"A provocative and very funny page-turner..."—Wall Street Journal

With dry wit and psychological acuity, this near-future novel explores the aftershocks of an economically devastating U.S. sovereign debt default on four generations of a once-prosperous American family. When the “almighty dollar” plummets in value overnight and the world turns to a new global currency, the president declares that America will default on its loans. The Mandibles have been counting on a sizable fortune filtering down when their ninety-seven -year-old patriarch dies. THE GLASS UNIVERSE

“Sobel makes hard science palatable for the general audience. . . . The Glass Uni- verse positively glows.” —NPR

A captivating, little-known true story of a group of women whose remarkable contributions to the burgeoning field of astronomy forever changed our understanding of the stars and our place in the universe. In the mid-nineteenth century, the Harvard College Observatory began employing women as calculators, or “human computers,” to interpret the observations made via telescope by their male counterparts each night. The ladies made extraordinary discoveries that attracted worldwide acclaim and earned several of the women international recognition for their contributions. Elegantly written and enriched by excerpts from letters, diaries, and memoirs, The Glass Universe is the hidden history of a group of remarkable women who, through their hard work and groundbreaking discoveries, disproved the commonly held be- lieve that the gentler sex had little to contribute to human knowledge.

The Glass Universe was published by Viking in December 2016 and has sold to Fourth Estate/ UK, Ginkgo/China, Berlin Verlag/Germany, Rizzoli/Italy, Alma Publishing/Korea, Captain Swing Books/Spain.

THE SECRET LIFE OF FAT

“This genuinely enlightening book will be a revelation to those engulfed in self- blame and shame about their weight.” — Publishers Weekly

Fat is an obsession, a dirty word, a subject of international handwringing―and, according to biochemist Sylvia Tara, the least-understood part of our body. You may not love your fat, but your body certainly does. In fact, your body is actually endowed with many self-defense measures to hold on to fat. The secret to losing twenty pounds? You have to work with your fat, not against it. Tara explains how your fat influences your appetite and willpower, how it defends itself when attacked, and why it grows back so quickly. The Secret Life of Fat brings cutting-edge research together with historical perspectives to reveal fat’s true identity: an en- docrine organ that, in the right amount, is critical to our health. Tara expertly illustrates the complex role that genetics, hormones, diet, exercise, and history play in our weight, and The Secret Life of Fat sets you on the path to beat the bulge once and for all.
