Cerulo Romance novels have changed significantly since they first entered the public consciousness. Instead of seeking to understand the changes that have occurred in the industry, in readership, in authorship, and in the romance novel product itself, both academic and popular perception has remained firmly in the early 1980s when many of the surface criticisms were still valid."Using Wendy Griswold’s (2004) idea of a cultural diamond, I analyze the multiple and sometimes overlapping relationships within broader trends in the romance industry based on content analysis and interviews with romance readers and authors. Three major issues emerge from this study. First, content of romance novels sampled from the past fourteen years is more reflective of contemporary ideas of love, sex, and relationships. Second, romance has been a leader and innovator in the trend of electronic publishing, with major independent presses adding to the proliferation of subgenres and pushing the boundaries of what is considered romance. Finally, readers have a complicated relationship with the act of reading romance and what the books mean in their lives. -

She brought a box full of romances and a power point presentation into the English Department meeting at Fordham University. She visited the Dean of Faculty, the Dean of the Graduate School, and the Dean of the Lincoln Center campus individually. She handed out loads of books to disgruntled friends and querulous relatives. An academic peer (Julie Crawford, assistant professor of Early Modern Literature at Columbia University) noted, "It's pointless to ignore the power, the pleasure, and the craft employed in well-written romances, such as those of Eloisa James." Jocelyn Wogan-Browne, Chair of Late Medieval Literature at the University of York, England, said in defense of Eloisa and the genre, “Romance-reading shouldn't be used by the academy as a way of reinforcing high-low culture distinctions in pursuit of its own institutional prestige. The sheer cultural weight of romance scripts and their presence in women's lives is what matters, and we can and should take all romances still more seriously than we do." After Eloisa wrote an op-ed defending romance for The New York Times, she almost crashed the Fordham server as manuscripts flooded her in-box from all over the country. -

LOVE BETWEEN THE COVERS A feature-length documentary film about the little-known, surprisingly powerful community of women who read and write romance novels. INTRODUCTION Romance fiction is a female-powered engine of commerce, a multi-billion dollar business, and a tech-savvy global sisterhood. Women who write and think about relationships turn out to be amazing community builders. Love Between the Covers takes us inside this world, one of the few places where women are always center stage, where female characters always win, where justice prevails in every book, and where the broad spectrum of desires of women from all backgrounds are not feared, but explored unapologetically. SYNOPSIS For three years, we follow the lives of five published romance authors and one unpublished newbie as they build their businesses, find and lose loved ones, cope with a tsunami of change in publishing, and earn a living doing what they love—while empowering others to do the same. We watch romance authors and readers building communities and friendships that don’t just exist on social media sites, blogs, and message boards, but also transition into the real world. We accompany authors on trips with their readers, at conferences and special romance events -- and we see them encouraging their readers to become writers themselves. During the three years we’ve been shooting Love Between the Covers, we have witnessed the biggest power shift that has taken place in the publishing industry over the last 200 years. And it’s the romance authors who are on the front lines, pioneering new ways to survive in this rapidly changing environment.
