Lower Lonsdale Loop a Walk Around the Shipyard That Will Inspire Community Connections Lower Lonsdale Loop A walk around the Shipyard that will inspire community connections A CityStudio project one-pager by Mackenzie, Tara, Alex. 2021-04-07 Background: The Lower Lonsdale Loop will animate the Shipyards by engaging the community in a contemplative walk painted on the existinG substrate. The path will incorporate an artistic wave design in reference to the marine environment. There will be ships and canoes painted on the outer edge of the path that will have relevance to the community and it’s past. The ship desiGns will incorporate QR codes that can be used by the City to link events, businesses, the MANOVA museum, PolyGon Art Gallery and more to the Shipyards. The use of florescent paint for the path will add magical element to the shipyards at niGht. Relevance to City Goals: The pathway will meet the goals of the City by acting as an attractant to the other cultural, historical and art pieces within the Shipyards. The Lower Lonsdale Loop is desiGned to Guide tourists and locals around the Shipyards to these points of interest and connection. The Loop will honour the past, reflect the present and be flexible enouGh to incorporate the future. Overview of the project: The Lower Lonsdale Loop is designed to be versatile. The walkway showcases the artistic and historical elements of the Shipyards in a way that will remain relevant to the community as it Grows and chanGes. The implementation of QR codes allows the City to update and link any website, pictures, or AR elements as it sees useful and relevant. The desiGn will be photoGenic inspirinG repeat visits to capture scenic vistas durinG the day and the luminescent Glow of the walkway at niGht. The intent is to Get people excited about what’s happeninG here and now in the community. Methods / Project Details: The Lower Lonsdale Loop is a fully accessible walk that may be used by citizens and tourists of various abilities. It may be used for fitness, sinGularly – or incorporated as an annex of the adjacent Spirt Trail. It can be used as a contemplative walk, usinG the inspirinG views of the area for reflection and meditation. Links to RQ codes accessed via a cell phone will educate users of the loop on the history of the Shipyards, keep them “in the loop” (pun intended) on local events and informed of municipal priorities. Flexibility is at the heart of the RQ code component of the walk. Links from these codes can be updated day to day, month to month or simply as required. The RQ codes can be linked to the City Hall, the Library, the Recreation Commission, the Sḵwxw̱ ú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) websites and/or special purpose websites when and as required. The intent for the Lonsdale Loop is to remain relevant, enGaGinG and informative for the citizens of the City of and for visitors to the community. This student project was developed as part of a CityStudio North Vancouver course collaboration. Staff partner(s): Instructor(s): Chris Carnovale Course: TOUR 227 THE LOWER LONSDALE LOOP PROJECT SCOPE MARCH 2021 1. Introduction Background History The Shipyards is an inseparable part of Lower Lonsdale District which is well-known for its Shipbuilders’ Square, the Pipe Shop and Shipyard Commons. It has a great Night Market in summer, free outdoor ice skating in winter and Burrard Dry Dock Pier is accessible year-round. Lonsdale Quay, the North Vancouver Museum (MONOVA) and the Polygon Gallery are all within a ten minute walk of the Shipyards. North Vancouver has a rich maritime history and the Shipyards reached their highest productivity during the second World War. Almost 450 vessels were built in Shipyards between 1906 and 1992 specially during the first and second World War. Besides naval ships and navy support vessels, ferry boats and icebreakers were built and repaired in this area. Also, shipbuilding and repairs still happen with lots of limitations in the area (North Vancouver’s Shipyards, Shipyard Commons and Shipbuilders’ Square , n.d.). This area transforms from an industrial area to public spaces day by day. Now a number of events take place in this area such as Summer Sessions Concerts, Polish Festival, Shipyards Festival, Shipyards Christmas Festival and Shipyards Night Market. 2. Project Mission and Goals The implementation of a walkable path that incorporates elements of art, history and community is the objective of our proposal. To achieve this goal our team has designed a looped path that will draw attention to local businesses in the area, featuring the stunning look out point from the pier. The Loop will begin and end at the art gallery. The intention is to create a focal point to assist locals and visitors to explore the Shipyards and beyond, into the City of North Vancouver. 3. Project Description This project is focused on Edutainment. In reference to the marine environment, the Loop will be defined by a wave design painted on the sidewalks or substrate around the Shipyards. The paint will include a fluorescent element which will highlight the path and make it a unique component in it’s own right. This along with a pattern representative of waves is designed to capture the feeling of a boat cutting through the bioluminescence of the ocean. During the day visitors will be able to see full colour paintings of 5 historical ships and 5 canoes. The intention is to seek the approval and incorporation of First Nations elements into the project. The incorporation of images of canoes of the Skwxwú7mesh Snichim (Squamish Nation) is intended to be an acknowledgement that this project will take place on the unsucceeded lands of the Nation and to move the truth and reconciliation process forward. The ships and canoes will be interspersed along the outer edge of the path in their own bump outs which will make it look as though the vessels are floating on the waves that make up the path. The vessels will have QR-codes integrated in their design that provide a versatile element to the work. The QR-codes can be linked to any website that the City choses, or special website sites can be developed to promote events, special offers, businesses or organizations. The aim of this art piece is to be versatile and flexible; to encourage people to explore the past and present of Shipyards. It will support the economy of the area in the long term. This exhibit was a collaborative project undertaken by the North Vancouver Museum & Archives and the Squamish Nation. These archival images were selected by the Squamish Elders and Language Authority to represent local landscapes, the community and the individual people within the Squamish Nation. The Squamish Elders and Language Authority also contributed to the exhibit labels which are included on the reverse of each picture. This Kit has been designed to complement BC’s Social Studies curriculum for grades 3 - 5, giving students the opportunity to explore themes related to First Nations cultures in the past and cultural First Nations activities today. Included within this Kit is a detailed teacher’s package that provides instructors with lesson plan activities that guide students in the analysis of archival photographs. The recommended activities encourage skills such as critical thinking and cooperative learning. Altogether, the lesson plan activities are estimated to take 1 hour and 45 minutes and can easily be stretched across several instructional days. Through photo analysis worksheets and activities, students will be introduced to the Squamish Nation and historical photographs. Teachers are encouraged to read through the program and adapt it to meet the learning abilities and individual needs of their students.
