Ce que l'on constate dans l' Hisioire des deux Inde ム c ' e s t donc la soumission du Droit a la Politique , et de la Politique a l'Histoire :on verra comment cette double soumission est operee sous la plume des historiens des deux Indes うautour de leur concept-de de ォ civilisation» , d組ni a la fois comme un processus historique et comme un acte politique. Mais prernierement うil faut se demander ce qui conditionne une telle souュ mission , en ゲ i n t e r r o g e a n t sur les premisses historiographiqu 杭philosophique et politique de 1 う H i s i o i r e des deux Indes. Pour cela うil convient de replacer cette 田 u v r e dans un vaste contexte culturel de l'historiographie des Lumi むres , celui de la transformation de l'histoire universelle. On connait la remise en question philosophique d うun Discours sur l'1山ioire universelle de Bossuet par Voltaire dans son Ess α i sur les m 配 u r s :c'est en elargissant Ie champ geographique de l うespace historique bien au-dela des frontieres de l'ancien Empire Romain et en retragant Ie processus de 1 もmergence des Etats souverains modernes en Europe depuis l'avenement de l'Empire Carolingien , que Ie patriarche des philosophes realise sa contestation de l'eveque de Meaux. On sait que jusqu'a la premiere moitie du siecle des Lumieres ぅl'histoire universelle うdont Ie concept meme provient de la tradition judeo-chretienne う presupposait la continuite de l'histoire sacree telle qu うon la trouve dans la Bible et de l'histoire de l'humanite qui devrait en decouler. Cette demarche う qui reduit la duree de l'histoire humaine a quelques quatre milles annees atュ testees par les diverses versions de la Bible うimplique par ailleurs l'acceptation de l'idee de 1 う u n i t e du genre humain うlaquelle est a 伍rmee par Ie recit de la Creation biblique et confirmee par la tradition theologique thomiste : 1 う homme est cree a l'image de Dieu , et il participe a la raison divine par sa droite raison , ne serait-ce que dans les bornes assignees par la religion revelee. Cet argument est fondamental うil garantit 1 う u n i v e r s a li t e de la religion chretienn 札mais en meme temps うpose des apories aux historiens europeens modernes うcharges de rendre compte de 1 う a n t i q u i t e des civilisations asiatiques et de 1 う e x i s t e n c e de la population dans les terres decouvertes de l' Amerique. Ainsi うdepuis la seconde moitie du XVIIe siecle , la di 伍culte de conformer Ie recit biblique et les histoires palennes fait couler beaucoup d'encre aux missionnaires jesuites et aux chroュ nologistes うqui ぜ e m p l o i e n t de leur mieux a faire deriver ces histoires palennes d'une source unique pre- ou post-diluvienne , et ainsi a reintegrer la pluralite des histoires humaines dans un et seul recit de l'histoire chretienne. 3 C うest d 冶illeurs contre cette histoire universelle chretienne et ce ォ monogenisme サ qui la determine , que Voltaire dans sa Philosophie de l'histoire (1765) oppose la theorie ォ polygeniste », aux tonalites franchement ォ racistes サ a l'egard des Africains.

Cecil Courtney and Jenny Mander are right to observe in their introduction to this volume that the Abbé Raynal’s Histoire philosophique des deux Indes has indeed come a long way since Gustave Lanson dismissed it as an “oeuvre morte” in 1895 (p. 1). Despite the fluctuating fortunes of the text--from eighteenth-century bestseller, to nineteenth and early twentieth- century oblivion--Raynal is everywhere in eighteenth-century studies now. Work by scholars such as Yves Bénot, Sankar Muthu, and (to a lesser extent) Jennifer Pitts has placed the Histoire des deux Indes in a canon of anti-imperial Enlightenment writings.[1] The Centre international d’étude du XVIIIe siècle is currently publishing a critical edition of the text, of which half of the collaborators on this volume are on the editorial team.[2] The introduction to this book is an essential summary of the current state of the field of Raynal historiography, and it makes clear just how much scholarly work went into the reestablishment of Raynal as an omnipresent figure in studies of the French Enlightenment today. As the editors readily note, the Histoire des deux Indes is not an easily approachable text.

In his Politics, the Greek philosopher Aristotle understood ta politika – the ‘political things’, politics, of his title – to be those things that concern the polis, the city-state that was the central unit of (precisely) political organisation in ancient Greece. This covered everything from the motivation and rationale of the polis, its constitutional structure, who qualified for citizenship, the nature of its government, to political safety strategies on the one hand and musical education on the other. At its base it involved a narrative about human beings forming into a political community for ends that cannot otherwise be achieved. This narrative, in multiple permutations, has been central to the tradition of Western political thought, and its focus is primarily on the relationship of citizens to fellow-citizens, and citizens to government, within one political unit, what we call ‘the state’. And yet, even in Aristotle’s Politics it is clear that the polis does not exist in isolation. The lives of its citizens demand slaves, who need to be ‘hunted’ abroad. Thus the polis must stretch out into space beyond itself. And it needs goods, which means merchants living within it who are nevertheless not part of it, not citizens. Thus the outside comes in. These inside/outside relations impact on the very theorisation of the polis itself, as Aristotle defines the relationships and laws between citizens against both commercial treaties and military alliances: both of which might look uncomfortably like political relations, but which for Aristotle’s purposes must, crucially, be excluded as such.

Review by Cecilia Feilla, Marymount Manhattan College. This collected volume brings together sixteen new essays by leading scholars of French Enlightenment philosophe Denis Diderot. Covering the major works and the “most characteristic aspects” (p. 1) of his thought, the essays reflect the range and variety of scholarship that has emerged on Diderot in recent decades, much of it by the specialists included here. One of the great strengths of the volume is the way in which less frequently read and researched texts in Diderot’s oeuvre are given equal treatment to the better known works. Chapters on Les Bijoux indiscrets and Diderot’s writings on music, for example-— areas usually reserved for specialists—are presented in analyses that offer illuminating material on their own and also provide interesting connections to other, more familiar areas of the philosophe’s thought. The essays are organized into five parts by topic and genre: Diderot the philosophe; Novels; Dialogues; Plays and Dramatic Theory; and Music, Performance, Aesthetics. After several decades in which the eighteenth century intellectual movement – especially due to the influence of the criticism and objections voiced by postmodernism – seemed discredited in the eyes of many, the history and ideas of the enlightenment again feature prominently in the scholarly world and intellectual arena. Partly this resurgence of interest could be attributed to the effects of globalism and the changing balance of power on the global scale.

    CONCLUSION Although the revolutionaries of 1789 found inspiration in the writings of all the major intellectual figures of the French Enlightenment, only Diderot can be truly counted as their spiritual contemporary. It has been rightly contended that Montesquieu, Voltaire, the philosophes, and even Rousseau, while they were opposed to the glaring injustices and abuses of the Ancien Regime, sought to alter its inequitable practices through the processes of reform alone. It is therefore remarkable that Diderot, who in so many ways epitomised the philosophical and moral preoccupations of his generation and shared many of its social and political objectives, should have late in life rejected reform for revolution. His apparently anomalous position within the general context of the political thought of the French Enlightenment cannot be adequately explained by referring to his tem­ perament or social position. Although his early release from family res­ traint and a natural impetuousness combined to form an attitude of ebullient independence towards convention, at a deeper level he was cautious, at times to the point of timidity. And it is caution which pre­ vailed in his relations with authority. Doubtless the deep sense of social responsibility inherited from his father contributed to his hostility to a regime which he looked upon as being socially irresponsible, and to his frustration over his own political impotence within a system which denied the right of the citizen to have a say in the running of society; but this alone cannot account for his adoption of a revolutionary stance when others in a similar position to himself continued to opt for reform.

    Fabienne Moore A Compromised Commerce with East India: Lucien Bonaparte’s La Tribu indienne, ou Édouard et Stellina (1799) n early 1799 at the age of twenty-four, Lucien Bonaparte (1775– I1840) published an exotic, sentimentalist first novel,La Tribu indienne, ou Édouard et Stellina.1 A native from Corsica who had been educated in France, Lucien Bonaparte had not yet traveled abroad, but Corsica’s recent struggle for independence from the Genovese Republic and its eventual conquest by France made the island a microcosm of local revolts against external powers, and certainly radicalized a young Lucien. La Tribu indienne, a colonial fiction set on the island of Ceylon (today’s Sri Lanka) relates “le commerce des Indes” through the story of Édouard Milford, a young Englishman sent to Java by his merchant father.2 Stranded in Ceylon where the Bedas tribe attacks his shipmates, Milford seduces and aban- dons the native woman who saves him, Stellina, the daughter of a tribal chief. With the exception of Cecilia Feilla’s critical edition, biographers and critics have dismissed the novel as a failed, or unimportant work, or confined themselves to an aesthetic reading of the text as proto-Roman- tic, disconnected from any colonial and imperial context.3 Yet the text is 1. Né en 1930, Olivier Bloch a consacré, depuis sa thèse de doctorat d’État (La Philosophie de Gassendi. Nominalisme, matérialisme et métaphysique) en 1970, une infatigable activité de chercheur et d’enseignant à l’étude du matérialisme dans ses différents aspects. Par les livres qu’il a écrits, par les textes qu’il a édités, par les très nombreux articles qu’il a publiés, ainsi que par tous les colloques, rencontres et séminaires qu’il a organisés, il a grandement aidé à une meilleure connaissance des traditions libertines de l’âge classique et de leur prolongement dans le matérialisme des Lumières ; il a contribué à la formation de générations de chercheurs. Les nombreuses contributions de ce recueil, riches et variées, lui rendent un hommage mérité et témoignent bien de la diversité de ses champs de recherche sous l’unité de cette thématique matérialiste. Si la profusion de l’ensemble rend évidemment dérisoire l’idée d’une synthèse qui rendrait justice à chacun des quarante et un articles qui composent ce volume, on peut du moins tenter d’en décrire les grandes lignes. Sur le plan chronologique, ces études portent sur une période qui va de l’Antiquité au XXe siècle, puisque les premiers articles sont consacrés à Homère (Marcel Conche), aux présocratiques (Antonio Negri), à la formule d’Euripide « qui sait si vivre n’est pas mourir et si mourir n’est pas vivre » (Jean Salem) et à Lucrèce (Alain Gigandet), et les derniers s’intéressent à Maurice Merleau-Ponty et Alexandre Kojève (Pierre Macherey), Collingwood (Paulette Carrive) et Anatole France (Jean Deprun).

The aim is to contrast the ideas disseminated by the current historiography about this eighteenth- century work, which was the most widely read of its time, with the judgments about Portuguese America that emerge in those editions.
