CHAIRMAN’S THOUGHTS WWW If you have received a copy of this newsletter you are a member of Ramblers and I hope that you share my interest in Welcome to Walking Weekend the work of the Association and how it acts to protect our rights Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th July 2011 of way and other interests, so necessary for us to pursue our rambling pastime. There have been a lot of changes and initiatives emanating from Central Office over the last few months, many as a result of decisions taken at General Council, others following on from consultations and discussions with members and Trustees. In fact there is so much going on that it would be impossible to cover every item in this newsletter. If you are on line take time out occasionally to look at the Ramblers Volunteer Website. It will give you all the information available including details of the General Council discussions. http://www.ramblers.org.uk/Volunteer/News/ I am sure you are all well aware of the South Cotswold Group’s activities over the last few months and in any case most have been recorded on our website. After our lovely HF Alnmouth holiday this May, it didn’t take us long to decide that we would like to do another HF holiday, our fourth as a group. I am therefore arranging a walking holiday for next May. Some members have shown interest in exploring the newly confirmed South Downs National Park, an area never visited by our Group. The rolling hills of the South Downs stretch across the counties of East and West Sussex. In this chalk landscape there is a profusion of wild flowers and archaeological remains. On a clear day the views from the top of the downs are tremendous and stretch over the coastal towns to the English Channel. Running along the crest of the downs is the South Downs Way, a popular long- distance route that is followed on a number of walks. To the north of the downs is the pastoral scenery of the Weald, a traditional landscape of farms Choice of HF Guided Walks on Sunday, Monday & Tuesday and picturesque historic villages. Walks here lead through Easier Day Walks: 5 to 7 miles with mostly gentle gradients. Up ancient woodland to thatched cottages, fields and sleepy to 750ft of ascent in a day. market towns. The valleys of the Arun, Rother and Adur, with Medium Day Walks: 8 to 10 miles on undulating paths with their flower-filled meadows, each offer tranquil riverside walks. occasional steeper sections. Up to 1375ft of ascent in a day. Harder Day Walks: 10½ to 13 miles with a few steep sections. Up to 2000ft of ascent in a day. Highlights of the walks could include the 12th century church at West Chiltington, the Elizabethan manor house of Parham Park, walks along the crest of the downs, the meandering Rother Valley to the parklands of Petworth House, an attractive riverside path to the historic town of Arundel, the of Chanctonbury and Cissbury Rings, and the superb viewpoint of Ditchling Beacon. Food - consists of the usual excellent HF full board with an extensive help yourself and/or cooked breakfast, choose your own picnic lunch and sociable evening meal. Social Activities arranged each evening - these are optional. Getting there - Abingworth is about 130 miles from Stroud. Members are advised to ensure that they have made their HF Abingworth Hall transport arrangements as early as possible. The Case of the Manure Heap and the Slurry Swamp!

Imagine being out on a family walk near the Ebley Mill Council Offices and coming across the conditions shown above - would you let your children walk through liquid manure?

The Ramblers don't think you should either and we have been working with Gloucestershire Public Rights of Way (PRoW) to clear this mess up once and for all. When I say working with Gloucestershire PRoW, sometimes it feels more like leaning on them as our priorities and theirs don't always coincide.

Over the past year or so Ramblers’ members have been monitoring this footpath which can be used as a link between Dudbridge, Selsley and Ebley.

Many reports and pictures have been sent to Gloucestershire PRoW in order to get them to act against the “landowner”. Some of these pictures can be seen below:

After much effort in particular from Penny Fernando of the South Cotswold Ramblers’ Footpath Committee and, I fear, many pairs of muddy boots, PRoW have now issued an ultimatum to the “landowner”, clear the mess or face legal action. Needless to say we will be closely monitoring the situation!!

START THE WEEK WALKS Experience from other groups has shown that the addition of regular shorter, more leisurely walks can provide a popular extension to the walks programme.
