The Royal Canadian Legion Prince Edward Island Command

Message from The President

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the armistice that ended the active fighting in the Korean War and the 50th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and South Korea. 2013 is the Year of the Korean War Veteran - Canada proudly remembers the heroes of the Korean War and their brave fight to uphold freedom, democracy and the rule of law. It is our duty to pay tribute to the more than 26,000 Canadian men and women in uniform who came to the aid of South Korea during the Korean War, and in particular the 516 Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend the values of peace and freedom. This year we pay them tribute and prove that this chapter of our history has not been, and will not be forgotten. Once again, Prince Edward Island Command of The Royal Canadian Legion, its members, staff, and Ladies’ Auxiliary, extend our thanks to all who provided assistance in making this project a great success. We are grateful to all who provided pictures and information of our Veterans. Through the efforts of this booklet, our organization will continue its strong support in the community to develop and fund programs for our Veterans, seniors and youth.

We Will Remember Them.

Wheelchair Soldier - unknown author

He proudly wore his blue beret As he walked across the sand, He thought of Canada far away From this bleak and war torn land. He could have stayed away from here, Away from this place of harm He could have stayed in Vegreville And worked his father’s farm.

He volunteered, he chose to serve He had to prove he had the nerve An airborne soldier he would be A halo jumper falling free His posting overseas came through He changed berets from maroon to blue And everything was going fine Till he stepped upon a mine.

*N-D-M-C was good to him Made him a leg, taught him to swim, Gave him a medal, a U-N gong But told him not to soldier on. His heart was heavy with despair, At chapel sat still in his wheelchair Without a leg, home to his wife Buddy behind him lost his life.

*National Defence Medical Centre, Ottawa

I Vow to Thee My Country - unknown author

I vow to thee my country All earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, The service of my love.

The love that asks no question, The love that stands the test That lays upon the altar The dearest and the best.

The love that never falters, The love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted The final sacrifice.

And there’s another country I’ve heard of long ago Most dear to them that love her Most great to them that know.

We may not count her armies We may not see her King Her fortress is a faithful heart Her pride is suffering.

And soul by soul and silently Her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness And all her paths are peace.

The Staff and Residents at the Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial Lodge would like to commend The Royal Canadian Legion on this War Time Service Recognition Booklet - Volume Ten. It is significant that we remember the mission of The Royal Canadian Legion in years to come. It should remind us of the great sacrifices many men and women made in order to protect our great country during times of war.
